The objective of this study was to evaluate if the inclusion of a blend composed of exogenous enzymes (amylase, protease, cellulase, xylanase and beta glucanase) in the individual and combined form in the feedlot steers diet has benefits on the physiology, rumen fermentation, digestibility and fatty acid profile in rumen and meat. The experiment used 24 animals, divided into 4 treatments, described as: T1-CON, T2-BLEND (0.5 g mixture of enzyme), T3-AMIL (0.5 g alpha-amylase), T4-BLEND+AMIL (0.5 g enzyme blend+ 0.5 g amylase). The concentration of mineral matter was higher in the meat of cattle of T4-BLEND+AMIL. A higher proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids was observed in the T3-AMIL group when compared to the others. The percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids was higher in the T2-BLEND and T4-BLEND+AMIL compared to the T1-CON. The combination of exogenous enzymes in the diet positively modulate nutritional biomarkers, in addition to benefits in the lipid and oxidative profile meat.

- Abstract
Introduction. In Argentina, information regarding the availability of resources in hemostasis and thrombosis is very scarce. The “Grupo Promoción del Acceso” del grupo CAHT (Cooperativo Argentino de Hemostasia y trombosis) conducted an extensive survey of resources in Argentina to understand the current state of the specialty. Objectives. To describe the availability of human and physical resources (diagnostic and therapeutic) in hemostasis and thrombosis in healthcare centers across Argentina in 2022 and to identify regional differences or disparities between the private and public sectors. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional cohort study. Healthcare centers from the Argentine Republic were included: institutions with inpatient services, outpatient centers, and laboratories. Data regarding the availability of human, diagnostic, and therapeutic resources in hemostasis and thrombosis were obtained at some point during the year 2022 through surveys conducted among healthcare professionals. Availability in analytical resources was defined when the test was performed within the institution or when the sample/patient was referred elsewhere for testing. Results. The study included 215 centers from 77 cities across Argentina. 85.5% of the centers had inpatient services. The median number of hematologists per institution was 3 (IQR 1-5). Differences were found among the median numbers across regions: CABA-Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires-(5), Centro/Cuyo (3.5), GBA/LP-Gran Buenos Aires/La Plata-(2), NOA-Noroeste Argentino-(2), NEA-Nordeste Argentino-(1), and SUR (1). 27% of the centers had 1 or no hematologist. 59% of the centers reported employing specialized biochemists in hemostasis/hematology. The region with the lowest percentage of centers with specialists was GBA/LP (37%). There was a high availability of basic coagulation tests observed. Conversely, for more complex tests, availability was suboptimal and marked regional asymmetries were detected (GBA/LP, NOA, and, Introducción.

In India, it is unclear whether maternal obesity or GDM is related to offspring adiposity. We aimed to understand the independent effect of maternal obesity and GDM with neonatal adiposity and whether GDM has a mediating effect between maternal obesity and neonatal adiposity. Methods: We recruited a cohort of 1120 women (between April 2016 and February 2019) from the public hospitals in Bangalore, India, who voluntarily agreed to participate and provided written informed consent. The primary outcome was neonatal adiposity, defined as the sum of skinfold thickness >85th percentile. Exposure included maternal obesity, defined as >90th percentile of skinfold thickness. GDM, the potential mediator, was classified using the World Health Organization criteria by oral glucose tolerance test. Binary logistic regression was applied to test the effect of maternal obesity and GDM on neonatal adiposity, adjusting for potential confounders. We used Paramed command in STATA version 14 for analyzing mediating effects. Results: We found that maternal obesity (odds ratio (OR)=2.16, 95% CI 1.46, 3.18) and GDM (OR=2.21, 95% CI1.38, 3.52) have an independent effect on neonatal adiposity. GDM significantly mediates 25.2% of the total effect between maternal obesity and neonatal adiposity, (natural direct effect OR = 1.16 95% CI 1.04, 1.30) with significant direct effect of maternal obesity (natural direct effect OR = 1.90 95% CI 1.16, 3.10) and significant total effect (OR=2.20 95% CI 1.35, 3.58).Conclusion: We showed that maternal obesity and GDM are independently associated with offspring adiposity. Also, GDM mediates the association of maternal obesity on adiposity in children. Interventions focused on obesity prevention in women, and effective screening and management of GDM may contribute to reducing childhood obesity in India. Keywords: mediation effects, skinfold thickness, GDM, obesity in pregnancy, childhood obesity

The objective of this work is to analyze the role of firm size for the economic growth of the 558 Brazilian micro-regions from 1999 to 2009. It was used a panel data estimations with GMM system and a spatial econometric analysis. Estimates for Brazil as a whole show that the presence of large companies in the industrial sector has contributed positively to the economic growth of regions, whereas small businesses and economic growth presented a negative relationship. The presence of spatial heterogeneity in the sample is characterized by two different spatial clusters with respect to per capita income. The analysis of each spatial clusters separately points out that the relationship between firm size and economic growth in the richest regions remains the same, while in the regions of lower GDP per capita, the size of the firms does not influence the economic growth.

Pharmacology (medical) - Abstract
Introduction: Syphilis is a bacterial infection transmitted sexually and transplacental. In Brazil, in the last decade, there has been an increase in notifications of maternal (MS) and congenital (SC) syphilis. Aim: To analyze the epidemiological profile of reported cases of GS and CS in the historical series, from 2009 to 2018, in the state of Goiás. Outlining: Epidemiological, cross-sectional, and analytical retrospective study that describes and analyses the data on MS and CS available in the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN). Contingency tables, descriptive and inferential statistics were presented, with the application of the G Test and significance level ≤0.05. Results: The results highlighted epidemiological changes in the sociodemographic profile and in the data of the care of pregnant women with syphilis. Implications: The evidenced epidemiological transition shows that there was an improvement in prenatal care in the state of Goiás, requiring health policy measures for specific risk groups. It is fundamental to plan and implement strategic actions with the redefinition of priorities in relation to the epidemiologically affected groups.

- Abstract
Methods: Individual participant data meta-analysis of 15 prospective epidemiological cohort studies from countries situated in six continents. Cox regression investigated the dementia risk associated with alcohol use in older adults aged over 60 years. Additional analyses assessed the alcohol–dementia relationship in the sample stratified by sex and by continent. Participants included 24 478 community dwelling individuals without a history of dementia at baseline and at least one follow-up dementia assessment. The main outcome measure was all-cause dementia as determined by clinical interview. Results: At baseline, the mean age across studies was 71.8 (standard deviation = 7.5, range = 60–102 years), 14 260 (58.3%) were female and 13 269 (54.2%) were current drinkers. During 151 636 person-years of follow-up, there were 2124 incident cases of dementia (14.0 per 1000 person-years). When compared with abstainers, the risk for dementia was lower in occasional [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.68–0.89], light–moderate (HR = 0.78; 95% CI = 0.70–0.87) and moderate–heavy drinkers (HR = 0.62; 95% CI = 0.51–0.77). There was no evidence of differences between life-time abstainers and former drinkers in terms of dementia risk (HR = 0.98; 95% CI = 0.81–1.18). In dose–response analyses, moderate drinking up to 40 g/day was associated with a lower risk of dementia when compared with lif-time abstaining. Among current drinkers, there was no consistent evidence for differences in terms of dementia risk. Results were similar when the sample was stratified by sex. When analysed at the continent level, there was considerable heterogeneity in the alcohol–dementia relationship. Conclusions: Abstinence from alcohol appears to be associated with an increased risk for all-cause dementia. Among current drinkers, there appears to be no consistent evidence to suggest that the amount of alcohol consumed in later life is associated with dementia risk.

Many Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) establish tuition below the equilibrium price to generate permanent demand excess. This paper first adapts Becker’s (1991) theory to understand why the HEIs price in this way. The fact that students are both consumers and inputs on the education production process gives rise to a market equilibrium where some firms have excess demand and charge high prices, and others charge low prices and have empty seats.Second, the paper analyzes this equilibrium empirically. We estimated the demand for undergraduate courses in Business Administration in the State of São Paulo. The results show that tuition, quality of incoming students and percentage of lecturers holding doctorates degrees are the determining factors of students’ choice. Since the student quality determines the demand for a HEI, it is calculated what the value is for a HEI to get better students; that is the total revenue that each HEI gives up to guarantee excess demand. Regarding the “investment” in selectivity, 39 HEIs in São Paulo give up a combined R$ 5 million (or US$ 3.14 million) in revenue per year per freshman class, which means 7.6% of the revenue coming from a freshman class.

ABSTRACT Although the great differentiation that exists in Brazilian higher education is widely known, and even if different types of institutions have different objectives and produce different results in the undergraduate, graduate and research levels, the full implication of these differences is not recognized by the legislation or by the evaluation system adopted by the Ministry of Education in Brazil. Neither is the public, i.e., current and future students and their employers, informed of these differences. The objective of this work is to present a classification or typology proposal for Brazilian higher education institutions that clearly identifies these differences, and that can serve as a basis for a system of information and evaluation procedures that take into account this variety of characteristics, objectives and results. This is done by grouping institutions that have similar profiles, from the point of view of size, legal status and involvement with teaching and graduate activities, and assessing the extent to which differences in type correspond to differences in the characteristics of faculty, students, areas of activity and performance. In the final part, we discuss some implications of this typology for the higher education evaluation system and, more broadly, for improving the quality and performance of higher education in the country as a whole.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Item does not contain fulltext, IMPORTANCE: The optimal systolic blood pressure (SBP) to minimize the risk of dementia in older age is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the association between SBP and dementia risk is U-shaped and whether age and comorbidity play a role in this association. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used an individual participant data approach to analyze 7 prospective, observational, population-based cohort studies that were designed to evaluate incident dementia in older adults. These studies started between 1987 and 2006 in Europe and the US. Participants had no dementia diagnosis and had SBP and/or diastolic blood pressure (BP) data at baseline and incident dementia status during follow-up. Data analysis was conducted from November 7, 2019, to October 3, 2021. EXPOSURES: Baseline systolic BP. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: All-cause dementia (defined using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [Third Edition Revised] or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [Fourth Edition] and established at follow-up measurements or in clinical practice), mortality, and combined dementia and mortality were the outcomes. Covariates included baseline antihypertensive medication use, sex, educational level, body mass index, smoking status, diabetes, stroke history, myocardial infarction history, and polypharmacy. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used, and nonlinear associations were explored using natural splines. RESULTS: The study analyzed 7 cohort studies with a total of 17 286 participants, among whom 10 393 were women (60.1%) and the mean (SD) baseline age was 74.5 (7.3) years. Overall, dementia risk was lower for individuals with higher SBP, with the lowest risk associated with an SBP of approximately 185 mm Hg (95% CI, 161-230 mm Hg; P = .001). Stratified by overlapping 10-year baseline age groups, the lowest dementia risk was observed at somewhat lower systolic BP levels in those older than 75 years (158 [95%

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: The management of heart failure is complex. Innovative solutions are required to support health care providers and people with heart failure with decision-making and self-care behaviors. In recent years, more sophisticated technologies have enabled new health care models, such as smart health ecosystems. Smart health ecosystems use data collection, intelligent data processing, and communication to support the diagnosis, management, and primary and secondary prevention of chronic conditions. Currently, there is little information on the characteristics of smart health ecosystems for people with heart failure. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify and describe the characteristics of smart health ecosystems that support heart failure self-care. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library databases were searched from January 2008 to September 2021. The search strategy focused on identifying articles describing smart health ecosystems that support heart failure self-care. A total of 2 reviewers screened the articles and extracted relevant data from the included full texts. RESULTS: After removing duplicates, 1543 articles were screened, and 34 articles representing 13 interventions were included in this review. To support self-care, the interventions used sensors and questionnaires to collect data and used tailoring methods to provide personalized support. The interventions used a total of 34 behavior change techniques, which were facilitated by a combination of 8 features for people with heart failure: automated feedback, monitoring (integrated and manual input), presentation of data, education, reminders, communication with a health care provider, and psychological support. Furthermore, features to support health care providers included data presentation, alarms, alerts, communication tools, remote care plan modification, and health record integra

- Abstract
Este estudo analisou dados públicos de caráter quantitativo, sem destacar nenhuma influência específica de políticas públicas e incentivos fiscais., This dissertation seeks to identify the causal relationship between the growth of gross domestic product, population variation, labor qualification and productive complexity in the development of Brazilian regions. The research used databases from the Ministry of Labor, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics and the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research. The data were organized and presented in the form of panels and cartographic maps, allowing us to observe which microregions had the greatest variation between 2009 and 2019. A multiple linear regression model was created to explain the variations observed in each of the variables. The results showed causal relationships between the variables and highlight the influence of regions with high GDP per capita on population growth and increase in the qualification of the workforce. Also, the skilled labor influences the productive complexity in the microregions. This study analyzed public data of a quantitative nature, without highlighting any specific influence of public policies and tax incentives.

Envenomation by snakes of the genus Bothrops are a health problem in some tropical countries, not only because of the mortality but given the high percentage of physical disabilities it causes. Phospholipases A2 (PLA2) are abundant constituents in bothropic and crotalic venoms, characterized by inducing irreversible muscle damage. Due to the contribution of plants in the snakebite treatment, we focus on the search of phospholipases inhibitors, either as an alternative treatment or as a therapeutic adjuvant of the current treatments. From a screening of 37 vascular plants and bryophytes in the search for such inhibitors, the species Murraya paniculata was selected due to its promising preliminary activity. Starting from this point further work consisting of bioassay-guided fractionation followed by the evaluation of the inhibitory activity of PLA2, the metabolites responsible for the activity were detected through a tandem of gas chromatography - mass spectrometry in the most active fraction, to propose substrate-enzyme inhibition model. The aims of this project was the search of promising compounds with an inhibitory activity of the PLA2 in vascular plants such as M. paniculata, that could become tools for developing new products to improve the prognosis of the snakebite.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária ABSTRACT - Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) data has been growing and its recent application in Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) has been discussed. Taking this growth into consideration, this study compared classic QMRA and WGS QMRA in terms of risk assessment questions they can answer and the way they can support decision making by risk managers. For this purpose, Listeria monocytogenes in Serra da Estrela cheese was used as a case study. Initially, a review of existing literature related to classic QMRAs and the application of WGS in QMRA was performed. This review revealed that WGS has shown advantages when integrated in the classic QMRA by allowing to fine tune each step of the risk assessment. After literature review, a classic QMRA was performed which predicted a total of 16 listeriosis cases in Portugal in one year due to the consumption of Serra da Estrela cheese. Multiple scenarios were tested, and results underline the importance of the cheese being stored at refrigeration temperatures. The WGS QMRA based on available WGS data of L. monocytogenes isolated from cheeses, using a machine learning model trained with French L. monocytogenes WGS data with known clinical frequency, predicted a clinical frequency of 37 to 54% due to Serra da Estrela cheese consumption and identified the genes and cheeses that are associated the most with clinical cases. This study concluded that both the assessed QMRA approaches are good in answering different questions and may support different types of control measures. Classic QMRA is good in giving the necessary scientific information for risk managers to decide on mitigation strategies whereas WGS QMRA allows for an early detection of outbreaks and more informed decision on product withdrawal. Therefore, this study suggests that having models to predict the clinical frequency based on WGS can be useful for risk managers as WGS data can, not only be integrated in the classic QMRA to obtain more precise results, but also be used independently as a first approach tool to promptly detect outbreaks and decide if immediate measures are required. However, further studies on the use of WGS for decision making in the risk management phase are needed for a correct use of the information. N/A
