Chirp profiles collected on the southern Brazilian shelf were combined with sedimentological and hydrodynamic data to characterize shelf geomorphology, focusing on the development of outer shelf bedforms and their genetic links with major oceanic currents. Outer shelf sediment accumulations are interpreted as two scales of bedforms, such as dunes and sand ridges. In the São Paulo Bight, cuspate bedforms are bounded landward by a geomorphological scarp. The sector between Florianopolis and Mostardas also exhibits frequent asymmetric bedforms, whereas the inner- middle shelf is covered by semitransparent sheets. The southern Rio Grande Cone is characterized by stratified deposits covering vast outer shelf areas. Surficial sediment samples reveal a dominantly muddy composition and relatively high carbonate contents. Hydrodynamic data indicate a major influence of the Brazil Current over the São Paulo Bight. The prolific bedform outer-shelf environment is assumed to be mostly relict formed in a transgressive shallow-water setting. The sand ridges are believed to have evolved from a moribund stage characterized by morphological degradation to a relict stage, with preservation enhanced by fine-grained winnowing, coarse sediment armoring, and early cementation. Bedform migration seems to be occurring on the São Paulo Bight due to the presence of a nearly permanent meander of the Brazil Current. Over most of the inner shelf, the northward advection of sediments mainly led by the Brazilian Coastal Current has formed extensive fine-grained deposits. The occurrence of a relict shelf scarp may have conditioned the formation of the outer-shelf bedform environment. The vast spatial distribution of bedforms over most of the outer shelf seems comparable with other shelf areas, such as the south African shelf, dominated by the influence of unidirectional oceanic currents. This research aims to distinguish genetic sedimentary processes building canyon geomorphological patterns and the factors driving different sedimentary activities in two nearby Mediterranean shelf-incised submarine canyons (Carchuna and Motril) that exhibit different degrees of incision on the narrow margin of the northern Alboran Sea. The straight Carchuna Canyon incises the shelf up to 200 m off the coastline and exhibit steep canyon walls featuring narrow terraces, muddy sands with high contents of organic matter along the thalweg, and transported shelf benthic foraminifera in distal settings. The Motril Canyon head is wider and incises the shelf edge, ca. 2 km off the coastline. It exhibits a sinuous morphology and less steep walls, wider terraces, and higher sedimentation rates with muddy sediments along the thalweg. In both canyons, cross-section relief, width, incision, and area decrease downslope, although these parameters increase locally. The downslope variations of geomorphological parameters are attributed to enhanced erosional/depositional processes promoted by tectonically controlled abrupt changes of the axial channel orientation. The degree of shelf incision, the location of the canyon heads in relation with the local sediment sources, and the seasonally variable hydrodynamic regimes determine the different degrees of recent canyon activity. This study focusses on improving our understanding of bedform forming processes in shelf-incising submarine canyons, using the Carchuna Canyon as a case study. To achieve this aim, we used: (1) multibeam bathymetric data, (2) grain-size data, (3) sub-bottom acoustic profiles, and (4) Flow 3D Hydro to simulate flow conditions along the canyon. The Carchuna Canyon is deeply incised in the shelf, and its head is located just 200 m off the coastline. The axial channel in the upper segment is covered by crescent-shaped bedforms (CSBs), with downcanyon evolution from fine sands into very coarse silts. Sets of CSBs also occur in the lower segment axial channel, where sediments change from very fine sands to distal coarse silts in levees. On the open slope east of the lower segment, two types of sediment bedforms have been identified: sediment waves with decreasing size downslope and two trains of N-S large scours. Acoustically, three acoustic facies were identified in the sub-bottom profiles were determined in the lateral deposits. The lower facies exhibit undulating and discontinuous low to medium amplitude reflections with laterally variable thickness. The middle facies are characterized by a transparent acoustic response. The upper facies develop an undulating seafloor. Flow simulation suggest the highest average flow velocity along the canyon thalweg. Out of the valley, average velocities are higher on top of the bedforms crests, whereas the higher Froude number values occur in the lee side of bedforms. The occurrence of CSBs in the axial channel point to down-canyon turbiditic flows along the channel, possibly conditioned by the extensive shelf incision of the canyon and its proximity to the coastline, which favour the capture of littoral sediment transport and the formation of gravity flows. A multibeam survey carried out in November 2019 reveals a lineament of seafloor protrusions on the Santos Basin (SW Atlantic) continental slope. Shallow seismic data and seafloor composition suggest the lineament comprises a 35 km long arrangement of Cold-Water Coral (CWC) carbonate mounds, here named the Tupana Carbonate Ridge (TCR), defined in this contribution for the first time. Insights into genetic controlling factors of the TCR led to the analysis of single-channel seismic profiles that cross the lineament. Interpretation of deep seismic reflection data suggests a stratigraphic control provided by the lateral arrangement of coastal deposits formed during the protracted progradation that characterized a significant portion of Santos Basin's depositional history. Coastal sandstones encased in low-angle shelf-margin progradational wedges constitute a potential hydrocarbon reservoir supplied by the flow of fluids toward the surface through vertical structures. The ultimate source of fluids seems to be provided by halokinetic movements on a region depleted of salts known as the Albian Gap domain. This work questions the role of seafloor hydrodynamics in shaping the TCR morphology by eroding the carbonate mounds and forming elongated contourite systems.

We report here the finding and analysis of xenoliths of altered basalt clasts dredged from the top of two exhumed diapirs in the southern Santos Basin (SW Atlantic). The diapirs crossed the stratigraphic column from the Aptian and outcropped on the seafloor. Complemented by seismic data, these findings provide the first direct evidence of an Early Campanian post-rift magmatic event in the southern Santos Basin (SW Atlantic). One 82 Ma Ar–Ar age of these xenoliths indicates that the volcanism developed coeval with the intrusion of the Serra do Mar Alkaline Province rocks on land. The tholeiitic composition of the xenoliths excludes a genetic correlation with the alkaline province. Seismic reflection data indicate the possible source of the xenoliths from a 40-km-wide cluster of volcanic centers and sills located above the Aptian salt deposits (∼115 Ma), between the top-Turonian (90 Ma) and top-Campanian (72 Ma) interval. We suggest that salt diapirism peented the overlaying volcanic units and carried fragments upwards through the entire stratigraphic column to the ocean floor. Our findings stress that salt diapirism is an important mechanism for conveying unreachable subsurface fragments to the surface, particularly the ocean floor. With the expanding knowledge of the seascape worldwide, enhanced exploration of salt diapirism and its xenolith products has the potential of opening new windows to unknown parts of geologic history.

A network of cross-shelf paleovalleys has been recognized over the paleo-inner shelf off the Gilão-Almargem Estuary, a small fluvial drainage system that presently receives minor sediment supply in the eastern Algarve shelf, northern margin of the Gulf of Cadiz (SW Iberian Peninsula). This study is aimed at determining the driving controls that triggered substantially different paleohydrological conditions and sedimentary dynamics of ancient fluvial systems in this margin. We focus on evidences of secondary controls on valley genesis and evolution, superimposed to primary glacio-eustatic control such as antecedent geology, low fluvial supply and changing hydrodynamic regimes. The architecture and spatial distribution of these paleovalleys were interpreted based on a grid of seismic profiles with different resolutions. Likewise, a sediment core obtained in a distal position of the paleovalley system provided information about sedimentary processes during the most recent stage of valley infilling. The chronostratigraphic framework was constructed based on regional seismic horizons defined in previous studies and complemented with two AMS 14C dates obtained from bivalve shells. The inner shelf paleovalley system is composed of several incised valley features which exhibit a remarkable similar internal architecture. These inner valley features exhibit two major incision phases (from oldest to youngest; IP 2 and IP 1) that are thought to constitute a simple paleovalley system formed during the last glacial cycle. The origins of the incision are considered to be different. The older one is related to fluvial incision during the sea-level fall leading into the Last Glacial Maximum, whereas the recent one is interpreted as the result of tidal scour during the postglacial transgression. Glaucony occurrences have been reported both from exposed transgressive and overlying highstand system tracts. However, its occurrences within highstand deposits are often invoked as the result of underlying condensed section reworking. Detailed textural, mineralogical and geochemical reports of glaucony grains in highstand deposits remain elusive. The northern Gulf of Cadiz shelf (SW Iberia) offers a unique opportunity to investigate late Holocene glaucony authigenesis in a well-documented time-stratigraphic context, where transgressive deposits are locally exposed on the seafloor and are laterally draped by highstand muddy deposits. In this study, glaucony grains extracted from a core retrieved from a highstand muddy depocenter off the Guadiana River were investigated by means of digital microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopic methods (FESEM-EDX and TEM-HRTEM). To better constrain the glaucony origin (autochthonous vs. allochthonous) in highstand muddy deposits, glaucony grains from surficial samples—taken from exposed transgressive deposits—were also investigated. Glauconitization in the studied core can be largely attributed to the replacement of faecal pellets from c. ~4.2–1.0 cal. ka BP. Both XRD and TEM-HRTEM analyses indicate that glaucony consists mainly of an R1, with a minor presence of R0, smectite-rich (nontronite) glauconite-smectite mixed-layer silicate, made up of 35–75% glauconitic layers and 65–25% of interstratified smectite layers. At the mineral lattice level, minor individual 7Å layers (berthierine) were also identified by HRTEM. Shallow radial cracks at the pellet surface, along with globular and vermiform-like biomorphic to low packing density lamellar-flaky nanostructures, mineralogical properties, and K-poor content (average 0.4 atoms p.f.u.) indicate a scarcely mature glauconitization process, attesting to formation of the grains in situ (autochthonous). The variability of sedimentation patterns and processes driven by late Quaternary glacial-interglacial paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes are investigated in Ona Basin, southwestern Scotia Sea. The interest of this area lies in the fact that the nearby Antarctic Peninsula has recorded extreme climatic variability, and the Drake Passage-Scotia Sea oceanic domain is influenced by two major Southern Ocean water masses, the eastward-flowing Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and the westward-flowing Weddell Sea Deep Water (WSDW). These goals are achieved through the examination of a grid of very high-resolution sub-bottom profiles and two gravity cores collected in Ona Basin. Multi-proxy data derived from the gravity cores include C-derived ages, descriptions of sedimentary units and diatom assemblages, and continuous logging of physical properties and micro-XRF core scanning. The sub-surface seismic stratigraphy is composed of four seismic units (U4 to U1) with a dominant sub-parallel configuration, with local occurrence of wavy facies and intercalations of transparent seismic facies. Additionally, four sedimentary units were recognized through sediment core analysis from bottom to top: Unit IV is composed of slightly bioturbated diatom-rich mud and silty mud with sparse ice-rafted debris (IRDs); Unit III is composed of gravelly silty to sandy mud with large amounts of IRDs; Unit II mostly contains bioturbated diatomaceous mud; and Unit I is composed of diatom-rich silty to sandy mud. The highest diatom abundances are found in Unit II, whereas highly variable abundances are found in Unit IV. The most common diatoms are Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and Chaetoceros subg. Hyalochaete. Overall, these characteristics document a change in the depositional style from terrigenous during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to hemipelagic sedimentation during the deglaciation. Multibeam bathymetric imagery and acoustic sub-bottom profiles are used to reveal distribution patterns of sub-surface sedimentation in Dove Basin (Scotia Sea). The goals of the study are to determine the imprint of the inflow of deep Antarctic water masses from the Weddell Sea into the Scotia Sea, to establish the factors driving the styles of contourite deposition and to discern the relative contribution of alongslope versus downslope processes to the construction of the uppermost late Quaternary sedimentary record in the basin. The most significant morpho-sedimentary features in Dove Basin are linked to contouritic processes and to mass movements. Plastered drifts on the flanks of the basin constitute the most common contouritic deposits. Basement-controlled drifts on top of structural elevations are common along the central ridge, the central basin plain and scattered along the basin flanks. Sheeted drifts occur on top of adjacent banks or are restricted to the deep basin. In contrast, mounded drifts are poorly represented in Dove basin. A laterally extensive contouritic channel runs along the central ridge. Contouritic channels are also identified in the upper parts of the lateral banks and slopes. Numerous slide scars along the upper parts of the slopes evolve downslope into semitransparent lens-shaped bodies, with occasional development of across-slope channels. Semitransparent lenses occur intercalated within stratified deposits in the slopes of the basin, in the central ridge and in the deepest basin plain. The spatial arrangement of contouritic morphologies points to the influence of the water column structure and the basin physiography. In the eastern sub-basin, two different fractions (lower and upper) of Weddell Sea Deep Water (WSDW) leave an imprint on contourite deposits owing to the sloping interface between the two fractions. This study aims to investigate the spatial variability of surficial sedimentation processes on a large sector of the Brazilian shelf by using echo-character mapping. To reach this goal, almost 3200 km of high-resolution seismic lines collected with a 3.5 kHz Chirp source are compared with surficial sediment-related distribution maps. Based on seismic characteristics, such as sharpness, amplitude, and continuity of sub-bottom reflections, six echo types were identified in the study area. These echo types were grouped into two main classes according to the nature of seafloor morphology. Class 1 is characterized by flat-bottom echoes with a variable amplitude of reflections and acoustic penetration. This class is predominantly found on the inner and middle shelves. Class 2 consists of irregular seafloor morphologies and is classified based on the occurrence of internal reflections and relief variations. This class is mainly found on the outer shelf. The distribution of echo types and associated surficial sediment maps exhibit three main shelf domains: inner, middle, and outer. The echo types are mostly controlled by the influence of along-shelf currents, as well as by mid-shelf fronts associated with the entrance of cold-water tongues under changing wind conditions and upwelling phenomena. Whereas the inner shelf is mainly affected by variable wind-driven currents, the outer shelf is more persistently influenced by the southwestward movement of the Brazil Current. Between these areas, the middle shelf is affected by seasonal intrusions of the South Atlantic Central Water and northward extensions of the Brazilian Coastal Current. The studied area can be considered a case model for a shelf driven by hydrodynamic processes.

Mud depocenters (MDCs) are common elements on modern continental shelves and act as a major shallow-marine sink for fluviogenic material. These most proximal depocenters, thus, play a major role in material cycling and carbon availability on global and regional scales, though individual formation history, dependence on external forcing mechanisms, and material composition makes each of them a unique case. This study establishes a chronostratigraphic framework and deciphers the depositional dynamics for the two main MDCs on the continental shelf in the eastern Gulf of Cadiz, as a prime example, with the goal to calculate a regional sediment and carbon budget. Based on the analysis of 2040 km of subbottom profiles and 18 sediment cores, the fine-grained depocenters began to grow during maximum flooding around 6.5 cal ka BP. Sedimentation rates ranged between 2 and 35 cm/ka until 2.7 cal ka BP and increased significantly around the Roman Warm Period (30–200 cm/ka), caused by regional humidification as well as mining and agricultural activities. After 1.0 cal ka BP, sedimentation rates rose further (20–3000 cm/ka), due to land clearing in coincidence with erosion-favoring aridity during the Islamic period and the Medieval Climate Anomaly. Unprecedented sediment accumulation started with the Industrial Era. The total sediment volume of the two MDCs is 5.80 km with a dry mass of 12,971 Mt. 85 Mt of organic matter and 3637 Mt of carbonate make this depocenter an important shallow-marine sink, with a total of 521 Mt carbon as a significant player in the regional terrestrial-marine carbon cycle.

Sedimentological, geochemical and benthic foraminiferal proxies were used to interpret changes of depositional environments in a mud entrapment inside the Guadiana River paleo-valley, northern Gulf of Cadiz, to understand the temporal variability of fluvial flooding events and to detect patterns of latitudinal climatic variability in western Iberia. The period between ca. 5800 and ca. 1250 cal yr BP was characterized by slowly accumulating coarse-grained sediments, high content of biogenic sand components, and high abundances of shallow-water benthic foraminiferal species. After ca. 1250 cal yr BP, the sedimentary environment was dominated by fine-grained sediments, with high abundances of opportunistic benthic foraminiferal species and successful colonizers, and high values of geochemical ratios indicative of enhanced terrigenous supply. Sedimentation rates increased drastically over the last ca. 500 years. The genesis of these environments was mainly driven by the variable frequency of fluvial flooding events driven by the regional climate variability. Low terrigenous sediment input under dry conditions prevailed in the older sedimentary unit. Flood frequency and terrigenous sediment supply increased during the younger unit. The variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation at centennial scales highly influenced the sediment supply during the last ca. 500 years, with high terrigenous supply during negative NAO conditions. Our results corroborate an N-S gradient along the Atlantic Iberia during middle and late Holocene, with more humid conditions in the northwestern and drier conditions towards the southeast. The gradient weakened over the past ca. 500 years, with increased rainfalls and flood events during the Little Ice Age.

The eastern Algarve continental shelf in the northern margin of the Gulf of Cadiz has been investigated by analysing a set of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles. We examine the major structural elements affecting the upper sedimentary units. A seismo-stratigraphic interpretation and regional correlation allowed the identification of a major discontinuity that separates two main intervals, pre-Middle Pleistocene (MP) and post-MP. In addition, a number of deformation features such as ENE-WSW to NE-SW thrusts, kilometric-scale N-S to NW-SE folds and NNE-SSW to NNW-SSE sub-vertical normal faults were identified affecting the Pliocene-Quaternary sedimentary record, indicating neotectonic activity. The structures pre-dating MP are in agreement with a dominant transpressive regime along the continental shelf, under the Late Cenozoic NW-SE oblique convergence and related to the reactivation of Mesozoic diapiric structures. The structures post-dating MP induce a lower deformation of the sedimentary cover but were still active during the last glacial maximum, in agreement with the low uplift recognized in the Portuguese mainland., [ES] La plataforma continental del Algarve en el margen septentrio-nal del Golfo de Cádiz ha sido investigada mediante el análisis de una red de perfiles sísmicos de alta resolución. Los depósitos del Plioceno y Cuaternario están deformados por estructuras de deformación tales como cabalgamientos ENE-OSO a NE-SO, pliegues N-S a NO-SE de escala kilométrica y fallas subverticales NNE-SSO a NNO-SSE, que indican actividad neotec-tónica. Las estructuras anteriores al PM se generan en relación con el régimen transpresivo (NO-SE) dominante a fInales del Cenozoico en esta región y la reactivación de las estructuras diapíricas mesozoicas observadas en el margen. En cambio, las estructuras posteriores al PM producen una ligera deformación de la cobertera sedimentaria y actividad durante el último máximo glaciar, lo que concuerda con un moderado levantamiento tectónico observado en la zona conti-nental del margen portugués.

On continental margins, the upper slope to shelf break environment forms a critical region where sediment supply, hydrographic activity and gravitational processes determine how and when sediments are partitioned between the shallow- and deep-marine realm. On the SW Iberian margin, relatively few studies have addressed the dynamics of this region, although it holds key information regarding the link between the sedimentary evolution of the continental shelf and the contourite depositional system on the middle slope. This work therefore presents a high-resolution analysis of the morphological and stratigraphic expressions of late Quaternary (dominantly last glacial and present-day interglacial) sedimentary processes on the upper slope and shelf margin sector between 7° and 7°30’ W. The integration of seismic, bathymetric and hydrographic data reveals the presence of alongslope processes and products (a bottom current-related plastered drift, moat, erosional surface and terrace, an internal wave-/tide-controlled sediment wave field), downslope (gravitational) processes and products (an upper slope – shelf margin valley system, slumps, debrites, gullies), neotectonic elements (diapirs) and fluid flow features (pockmarks, bright spots). The spatial distribution of these features indicates that the study area becomes increasingly alongslope-dominated towards the W, and oppositely, more downslope-dominated towards the E, because sediment supply to the latter area is enhanced under the dominant eastward dispersal of fluvially supplied sediments on the shelf. In addition, glacial-interglacial variations in the amount of sediments supplied to the shelf edge and the intensity of oceanographic processes in the study area also generate a distinct temporal variability, with glacial and interglacial intervals respectively recording principally downslope- and alongslope-controlled morphological elements. Ona Basin, the westernmost oceanic basin in the southern Scotia Sea, is affected by the opposite flows of Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) and Weddell Sea Deep Water (WSDW); thus, it represents a key location for exploring seafloor morphologies influenced by bottom currents. The present study aims to capture the spatial arrangement of recent subsurface contourite features, assuming a latitudinal influence of water masses and the interactions between along- and downslope processes, in order to contribute to the knowledge of regional deepwater flow pathways and to the sedimentary model of small sediment-starved oceanic basins. To this end, the investigation combines an interpretation of multibeam bathymetry and parametric echo sounder seismic data complemented with hydrological data. The distribution of morpho-sedimentary features in Ona Basin reveals two major domains. The southern margin of the basin can be regarded as a mixed/hybrid system containing abundant sediment drifts with channels and contourite moats and a lateral continuity interrupted by downslope morphologies. In contrast, the northern abyssal setting comprises relatively homogeneous large sheeted drifts with superimposed sediment waves, mounded drifts, and several scattered erosive features, likely reflecting the more distinct influence of deepwater contourite processes. Our work demonstrates that tectonic features in the southern basin control the interaction between deepwater along- and downslope processes, as the westward flow of the WSDW is deflected, channelized, and intensified along its westward route. In the northern region, the study indicates an overall clockwise rotation of the WSDW flow, with the spatial and vertical variability of CDW and WSDW affecting the distribution of bottom-current features around seamounts and/or structural highs. Recently acquired bathymetric and high-resolution seismic data from the upper slope of Santos Basin, southern Brazilian margin, reveal a major geomorphological feature in the SW Atlantic that is interpreted as a carbonate ridge - the Alpha Crucis Carbonate Ridge (ACCR). The ACCR is the first megastructure of this type described on the SW Atlantic margin. The ~17 × 11-km-wide ring-shaped ACCR features tens of >100-m-high steep-sided carbonate mounds protruding from the surrounding seabed and flanked by elongated depressions. Comet-like marks downstream of the mound structures indicate that the area is presently influenced by the northward flow of the Intermediate Western Boundary Current (IWBC), a branch of the Subtropical Gyre that transports Antarctic Intermediate Water. Abundant carbonate sands and gravels cover the mounds and are overlain by a biologically significant community of living and dead ramified corals and associated invertebrates. The IWBC acts as a hydrodynamic factor that is responsible for both shaping the bottom and transporting coral larvae. We contend that the ACCR was formed by upward fluid flow along active sub-surface faults and fractures that formed by lateral extension generated by the ascending movement of salt diapirs at depth. The ACCR provides an important modern and accessible analogue for a seabed carbonate build-up related to sub-surface hydrocarbon systems.

Over the past decades, the northern Gulf of Cadiz has been the focus of a wide range of late Quaternary seismic and sequence stratigraphic studies, either addressing the slope contourite depositional system (CDS), or the development of the continental shelf. Yet, high-resolution seismic data bridging between these domains and age information have remained sparse. This study, based on new high-resolution reflection seismic profiles calibrated to IODP Expedition 339 sites U1386/U1387, now presents an updated stratigraphic framework, that integrates (for the first time) the late Quaternary records of the northern Gulf of Cadiz middle slope to shelf off the Guadiana River. Seismic stratigraphic analysis of the stacking, depocenter distribution, stratal architecture and facies of the seismic (sub-)units reveals the influence of ~100 kyr sea-level variations paced by Milankovitch (eccentricity) cycles, tectonics (manifesting as two pulses of uplift and margin progradation), sediment supply and bottom current activity. This work furthermore contributes to the application and understanding of high-resolution, late Quaternary sequence stratigraphy. Firstly, the proposed sequence stratigraphic interpretation shows that adaptations to the basic models are required to integrate the shelf and slope record, and to account for the presence of a significant alongslope (bottom current-controlled) component. Secondly, the results confirm that the sequences are dominantly composed of regressive deposits, whereas the preservation of transgressive to highstand deposits is more irregular. Significantly, the common assumption that successive major glacial lowstands are consistently recorded as well-marked, shelf-wide erosional unconformities, is demonstrated to be occasionally invalid, as tectonics can obliterate this one-to-one relationship.

In southeastern Brazil, the Serra do Mar coastal mountain range blocks the sediment influx from arriving at a ca. 1,500 km long continental margin comprising Santos and Pelotas basins. Despite this deprivation, the margin accumulated a ca. 1 km thick sedimentary succession since the Mid-Miocene. Examination of seismic reflection and oceanographic data indicates that shelf-margin clinoform formation exhibits a regional variability, with major sigmoidal clinoforms developed in the transitional area between both basins. Laterally, poorly developed oblique clinoforms constitute isolated depocenters along the shelf margin. The continuous clinoform development in the transitional area is attributed to the major influence on sediment transport patterns of several ocean bottom currents flowing along the margin, such as the Brazil Coastal Current, the Brazil Current and the Intermediate Water Brazil Current. These currents erode, transport and distribute sediments across the shelf break and upper slope from distant sediment sources located either north or south of the study area. The progressive southward strengthening of the Brazil Current could be responsible for a major southward sediment redistribution from the northern Campos Basin, and/or for sediment entrainment from northward-induced transport by the Brazil Coastal Current, originally derived from the De la Plata Estuary. In the transition between Santos and Pelotas basins, the Intermediate Water Brazil Current splits forming the Santos Bifurcation, allowing for a continuous depositional process and clinoform generation. We suggest that ocean bottom currents may shape other shelf-edge ‘contouritic clinoforms’ in continental margins mainly constructed by along-strike sediment transport largely driven by long-term geostrophic currents.

This study examines the role of deep pockmarks in acting as natural sediment traps. Multibeam bathymetry, single-channel seismic and sediment samples data were used for describing the morphology of pockmarks as well as the nature of sediments inside and outside these depressed features, in an area of Santos Basin (SW Atlantic upper slope), dominated by the strong flow of Brazil Current. Results show that the grain size and chemical composition of sediments inside pockmarks are distinct from the outside. Also, radiocarbon dating shows that Holocene ages are found only in samples located inside the pockmarks. Combination of sedimentological, geochemical and geochronological data allowed to recognise that deep pockmarks might present distinct sediment deposition processes when compared with those of shallow pockmarks, in which turbulence impedes sediment deposition, as reported in the literature.

Natural and human-induced seabed sediment disturbances affect wide areas of the global coastal ocean. These recurrent to chronic disturbances mobilize significant amounts of material, including substances that have the potential to significantly harm the environment once re-released. This very challenging issue is difficult to deal with if sub-surface contaminant concentrations are unknown. Based on the analysis of 11 new, up to 5-m long sediment cores taken offshore in the Gulf of Cadiz, the contamination history (using the trace elements lead and zinc) is well documented over major parts of the gulf. Ore mining and metal processing industries on the southwestern Iberian Peninsula started five thousand years ago and experienced a first peak during the Roman Period, which can be detected over the entire gulf. The Industrial Era added a massive, shelf-wide heavy metal excursion of unprecedented dimension. This metal contamination to the coastal ocean decreased in the 1990s and appears to be today limited to larger areas off the Tinto/Odiel and Guadiana River mouths. The unforeseen, significant finding of this study is that the gulf-wide, peak heavy metal concentration, stemming from the Industrial Era, is widely overlain by a modern sediment veneer just thick enough to cover the contaminant horizon, but thin enough to have this layer within the reach of natural or human-induced sediment mobilization events.

The main aim of this study is to explore the spatial patterns of the shelf-scale erosional unconformity related to the last glacial maximum (LGM), particularly in terms of the role of underlying geology and the presumed primary influence of sea-level changes. This involved a detailed mapping of the most recent and widespread erosional shelf surface in a sector of the northern margin of the Gulf of Cádiz (northeast Atlantic Ocean) located adjacent to a major fluvial source. A dense network of high-resolution seismic profiles collected in the 1990s and 2013 off the Guadiana River revealed two distinct geomorphological domains on the LGM shelf-scale subaerial surface. The outer domain exhibits a widespread occurrence of erosional truncations, with a rugged, erosional pattern over the most distal shelf setting that evolves landward into a planar unconformity. The inner domain is more extensive and is characterized by the common occurrence of highly reflective, localized mounded seismic facies that laterally evolve into an irregular surface and in places may develop a channelized morphology. Significant fluvial incision is limited to a major straight valley and a secondary distributary channel. A distinct partition of the lowstand surface is documented, and attributed to a well-marked lithological change. A coarse-grained inner shelf comprises underlying lithified coastal deposits, whereas a fine-grained outer shelf is regarded as the uppermost expression of regressive prodeltaic wedges. The influence of regional indurated surfaces is also expressed in (1) the pattern of erosion, this being more patchy on the inner shelf due to lateral changes of erodibility, whereas on the outer shelf it shows laterally continuous bands, owing to different modes of transgressive ravinement; (2) the spatial and temporal variability of fluvial incision. Inner shelf armoring by indurated deposits prevents reoccupation of previously incised valleys.
