Abstract Most genetic variants associated with fertility in mammals fall in non-coding regions of the genome and it is unclear how these variants affect fertility. Here we use genome-wide association summary statistics for Heifer puberty (pubertal or not at 600 days) from 27,707 Bos indicus, Bos taurus and crossbred cattle; multi-trait GWAS signals from 2119 indicine cattle for four fertility traits, including days to calving, age at first calving, pregnancy status, and foetus age in weeks (assessed by rectal palpation of the foetus); and expression quantitative trait locus for whole blood from 489 indicine cattle, to identify 87 putatively functional genes affecting cattle fertility. Our analysis reveals a significant overlap between the set of cattle and previously reported human fertility-related genes, impling the existence of a shared pool of genes that regulate fertility in mammals. These findings are crucial for developing approaches to improve fertility in cattle and potentially other mammals.

Background and purpose: Minimally invasive surgery for ICH has shown a significantly improved functional outcome for selected ICH patients. This study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing the outcome of supratentorial ICH patients treated with stereotactic computed tomographic (CT) guided recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA). Methods: We retrospectively evaluated data from 80 consecutive supratentorial ICH patients between December 2017 and July 2020, analyzing their 180-day outcomes, and identifying clinical, radiological factors for good prognosis within 180 days. Results: The mean age was 55.6 years (SD 11.4). The median preoperative Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was 9 (interquartile range - IQR 6–12). The mean final ICH volume was 26.5 ml (SD 27.5), with ICH volume reduction by an average of 66.7 %. Six months after the procedure, 40 patients (50 %) had favorable outcomes (modified Rankin Scale [mRS]) score 0–3). In multivariate analysis, age (odds ratio [OR] = 0.939, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 0.894 – 0.986; p = 0.012), the GCS score before operation (OR = 1.525, 95 % CI = 1.008 – 2.309; p = 0.046), the initial midline shift (OR = 0.808, 95 % CI = 0.661 – 0.988; p = 0.038), and the residual volume hematoma (OR = 0.949, 95 % CI = 0.908 – 0.992, p = 0.020) were the significant predictors of a favorable 180-day outcome. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis confirmed that the best cut-off point for predicting the good functional 180-day outcome was a GCS score of 9 before the procedure [area under the curve: 0.721, 95 % CI = 0.608 – 0.833, p = 0.001]. Conclusion: CT-guided thrombolysis and aspiration can be safe and effective in reducing ICH volume. A preoperation GCS score above or equal to 9 and younger age were associated with improved long-term outcomes in patients with supratentorial ICH.

Background: The MDR1 genotype and the CYP2C19 phenotype determine how much PPI is absorbed from the gut and how much is processed in the liver. Objective: To assess the impact of CYP2C19 and MDR1 C3435T gene polymorphisms on the efficiency of H. pylori eradication treatment with a 4-drug regimen of rabeprazole, bismuth, tetracycline, and tinidazole (RBTT) in patients with duodenal ulcers. Methods: The study was conducted at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Gene polymorphisms for CYP2C19 and MDR1 C3435T were detected through a blood test. The RBTT 4-drug regimen was used to eradicate H. pylori. Results: The success rate of the RBTT regimen for eradicating H. pylori in female patients with the CYP2C19 EM phenotype + MDR1 3435CC genotype was 20.0% lower than the rate of 91.7% for the group without both phenotype and genotype (p = 0.01, OR = 0.02, 95%CI: 0.00–0.45). Conclusion: Compared to the group lacking both phenotypes and genotypes, female patients with the CYP2C19 EM phenotype + MDR1 3435CC genotype had a lower rate of H. pylori eradication by RBTT regimen.

Epigenetic marks do not follow the Mendelian laws of inheritance. The environment can alter the epigenotype of an individual when exposed to different external stressors. In lactating cows, the first stages of gestation overlap with the lactation peak, creating a negative energy balance that is difficult to overcome with diet. This negative energy balance could affect early embryo development that must compete with the mammary tissue for nutrients. We hypothesize that the methylation profiles of calves born to nonlactating heifers are different from those of calves born to lactating cows. We found 50,277 differentially methylated cytosines and 2,281 differentially methylated regions between these two groups of animals. A comethylation network was constructed to study the correlation between the phenotypes of the mothers and the epigenome of the calves, revealing 265 regions associated with the phenotypes. Our study revealed the presence of DMCs and DMRs in calves gestated by heifers and lactating cows, which were linked to the dam’s lactation and the calves’ ICAP and milk EBV. Gene-specific analysis highlighted associations with vasculature and organ morphogenesis and cell communication and signalling. These finding support the hypothesis that calves gestated by nonlactating mothers have a different methylation profile than those gestated by lactating cows.

This study investigates the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) score on the financial performance of listed companies in the Southeast Asia. The study contributes to the existing literature in providing an empirical evidence for a regional analysis in developing countries, particularly in Southeast Asia and extending the existing models by incorporating macroeconomic and COVID-19 variables. The study estimates the impact of ESG score on financial performance using the Fixed Effect Model from the panel data comprising 225 listed companies in the six countries in the Southeast Asia including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines in three years from 2020 to 2022. The statistics implies the ESG practices in Southeast Asia still insufficient and significant variations among enterprises. A one-year lagged ESG variable has a significantly positive impact on financial performance. The COVID-19 infection rate has a significant negative impact on the return on asset (ROA); meanwhile, the ROA experiences a slight increase with a rise in GDP growth. The results also enhance our understanding of ESG investments and underscores their importance in shaping investment choices, especially in rapidly developing Southeast Asian economies, where prioritizing ESG factors is crucial for sustainable development.

Background: Receiving hemodialysis treatment makes end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients highly vulnerable amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, their kidney disease quality of life (KDQOL) is affected. We aimed to examine the association between fear of COVID-19 (FCoV-19) and KDQOL, and the effect modification of Health literacy (HL) on this association.Material and Methods: A survey was conducted at 8 hospitals from July 2020 to March 2021 on 972 patients. Data collection includes socio-demographic factors, clinical parameters, HL, digital healthy diet literacy (DDL), hemodialysis diet knowledge (HDK), FCoV-19, suspected COVID-19 symptoms (S-COVID-19-S), and KDQOL.Results: Higher HL scores B = 0.13 (95% CI = 0.06–0.21, p = 0.001) and HDK scores B = 0.58 (95% CI = 0.31–0.85, p = 0.001) were associated with higher KDQOL scores. Whereas, S-COVID-19-S B = −6.12 (95% CI = −7.66 to – 4.58, p = 0.001) and FCoV-19 B = −0.91 (95% CI = −1.03 to – 0.80, p = 0.001) were associated with lower KDQOL scores. Notably, higher HL scores significantly attenuate the negative impact of FCoV-19 on overall KDQOL and the kidney disease component summary.Conclusions: In hemodialysis patients, FCoV-19 and S-COVID-19-S were associated with a lower KDQOL. Health literacy significantly mitigates the negative impact of FCoV-19 on KDQOL. Strategic public health interventions to improve HL are suggested to protect patient’s KDQOL during the pandemic.

Bovicola ovis, commonly known as the sheep-biting louse, is an ectoparasite that adversely affects the sheep industry. Sheep louse infestation lowers the quality of products, including wool and leather, causing a loss of approximately AUD 123M per annum in Australia alone. The lack of a high-quality genome assembly for the sheep-biting louse, as well as any closely related livestock lice, has hindered the development of louse research and management control tools. In this study, we present the assembly of B. ovis with a genome size of ~123 Mbp based on a nanopore long-read sequencing library and Illumina RNA sequencing, complemented with a chromosome-level scaffolding using the Pore-C multiway chromatin contact dataset. Combining multiple alignment and gene prediction tools, a comprehensive annotation on the assembled B. ovis genome was conducted and recalled 11,810 genes as well as other genomic features including orf, ssr, rRNA and tRNA. A manual curation using alignment with the available closely related louse species, Pediculus humanus, increased the number of annotated genes to 16,024. Overall, this study reported critical genetic resources and biological insights for the advancement of sheep louse research and the development of sustainable control strategies in the sheep industry.

In this paper, we investigate a novel power beacon (PB)-aided wireless sensor-powered non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) Internet-of-Things (IoT) network under imperfect channel state information (CSI). Furthermore, the exact expression outage probability (OP) of two IoT users is derived to analyze the performance of the considered network. To give further insight, the expression asymptotic OP and diversity order are also expressed when the transmit power at the PB goes to infinity. Furthermore, a deep neural network (DNN) framework is proposed to concurrently forecast IoT users’ OP in relation to real-time setups for IoT users. Additionally, when compared to the traditional analysis, our created DNN shows the shortest run-time prediction, and the outcomes predicted by the DNN model almost match those of the simulation. In addition, numerical results validate our analysis, simulation, and prediction through a Monte Carlo Simulation. Furthermore, the results show the impact of the main parameter on our proposed system. Finally, these findings show that NOMA performs better than the conventional orthogonal multiple-access (OMA) techniques.
