Pendant au moins toute la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, on a eu recours à de la musique pour la fête patronale du collège des Jésuites à Lyon et cela dans des cadres aussi bien sacrés que séculiers, mais sans qu’aucun détail précis sur cette musique ait pu, jusqu’à ce jour, être retrouvé. Cet article réunit tout un ensemble de sources contextuelles visant à faire comprendre quel genre de musique a été le plus susceptible d’être entendu lors de ces occasions.

Cette étude remplace des généalogies peu contestées de Claude-François Menestrier par un examen du quartier dans lequel il a grandi et met en question la légende de son ascendance aristocratique en suggérant une origine plus populaire. Elle permet de réévaluer des origines sociales des populations qui fréquentaient les collèges jésuites ainsi que de ceux qui entraient dans la Société de Jésus. L’histoire sociale, voire économique, peut ainsi fournir des ressources cruciales pour la révision des domaines touchant à l’histoire des mentalités., This study replaces the little-contested genealogies of Claude-François Menestrier with an examination of the quarter in which he grew up, and questions the legend of his aristocratic ancestry by suggesting more working-class origins. This allows for a re-evaluation of the social origins of those who frequented the Jesuit colleges as well as those who entered the Society of Jesus. Social, even economic, history is thus a crucial resource for those attempting to reconsider areas relating to the history of mentalities.

When considering the evolution of twentieth-century church-building, two topics are inescapable — the Liturgical Movement and developments in Modern architecture — and this article therefore argues that in order to appreciate the evolution of the twentieth-century Catholic parish church it is essential to take both liturgical and architectural developments into account. It focuses on such churches in Belgium because that country played a particularly important role in developing relevant theory, Belgian clergy having been founding members of the Liturgical Movement. However, the movement took more than half a century to develop fully there, during which time other initiatives also appeared, such as Domus Dei (the Belgian Diocesan organization for church-building, set up in 1952) and Pro Arte Christiana. Moreover, other factors — ecclesiastical, social, economic, political and cultural — also prove to be crucial in reaching a full appreciation of twentieth-century church-building, for instance, the impact of diocesan guidelines for church-building, and of bodies such as Catholic Action (Katholieke Actie) and Parish Action (Parochiale Actie). This article demonstrates that, despite few apparent formal similarities (if any) between churches built in Belgium before and after World War II, the developments of the inter-war period were fundamental to post-war developments in Belgian church-building.
