- Abstract
Despite cold-water coral (CWC) reefs being considered biodiversity hotspots, very little is known about the main processes driving their morphological development. Indeed, there is a considerable knowledge gap in quantitative experimental studies that help understand the interaction between reef morphology, near-bed hydrodynamics, coral growth, and (food) particle transport processes. In the present study, we performed a 2-month long flume experiment in which living coral nubbins were placed on a reef patch to determine the effect of a unidirectional flow on the growth and physiological condition of Lophelia pertusa. Measurements revealed how the presence of coral framework increased current speed and turbulence above the frontal part of the reef patch, while conditions immediately behind it were characterised by an almost stagnant flow and reduced turbulence. Owing to the higher current speeds that likely promoted a higher food encounter rate and intake of ions involved in the calcification process, the coral nubbins located on the upstream part of the reef presented a significantly enhanced average growth and a lower expression of stress-related enzymes than the downstream ones. Yet, further experiments would be needed to fully quantify how the variations in water hydrodynamics modify particle encounter and ion intake rates by coral nubbins located in different parts of a reef, and how such discrepancies may ultimately affect coral growth. Nonetheless, the results acquired here denote that a reef influenced by a unidirectional water flow would grow into the current: a pattern of reef development that coincides with that of actual coral reefs located in similar water flow settings. Ultimately, the results of this study suggest that at the local scale coral reef morphology has a direct effect on coral growth thus, indicating that the spatial patterns of living CWC colonies in reef patches are the result of spatial self-organisation.

- Abstract
Cold-water coral reefs (CWC) are known to be biodiversity hotspots, however, the sponge assemblages found to dwell within these habitats haven not been studied in depth to date in the Mediterranean Sea. The present article provides the first insight on the associated sponge fauna of the recently discovered CWC communities on the Catalan Margin and, to a lesser extent, the Cabliers Coral Mound Province, while also reviewing the current knowledge of the sponge fauna dwelling in all the Mediterranean CWC provinces. In regards to the studied areas, some rare species are cited forthe first time in the Mediterranean or redescribed, while two of them,Hamacantha (Hamacantha) hortae sp. nov. and Spongosorites cabliersi sp. nov. are new to science. At a basin scale, Mediterranean CWC appear as poriferan biodiversity hotspots, yet current diversity values on each site rather represent a small fraction of its actual fauna. Additionally, the existence of an endemic sponge fauna exclusively dwelling on CWC is refuted. Nonetheless, the sponge fauna thriving in Mediterranean CWC appears to be unique, and different from that of other Atlantic regions. Finally, with the current knowledge, the sponge fauna from the Mediterranean CWC is grouped in three distinguishable clusters (Alboran Sea, Western and Eastern Mediterranean), which appears to be determined by the basins water circulation, specially the Levantine Intermediate Water and the Atlantic Water following a western-eastern pattern from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Adriatic Sea. Overall, sponge living in Mediterranean CWC are still poorly explored in most areas, yet they appear to be good candidates for biogeographical studies.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) increases the risk of mortality in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients. Data on the relationship of COPD to major cardiovascular events (MACE) in AF have not been defined. The aim of the study is to assess the predictive value of COPD on incident MACE in NVAF patients over a 3-year follow-up. In the Atrial Fibrillation Registry for Ankle-Brachial Index Prevalence Assessment-Collaborative Italian Study (ARAPACIS) cohort, we evaluate the impact of COPD on the following clinical endpoints: MACE (including vascular death, fatal/non-fatal MI and stroke/TIA), cardiovascular (CV) death and all-cause mortality. Among 2027 NVAF patients, patients with COPD (9%) are more commonly male, elderly and at higher thromboembolic risk. During a median 36.0months follow-up, 186 patients experienced MACE: vascular death (n = 72), MI (n = 57), stroke/TIA (n = 57). All major outcomes (including stroke/TIA, MI, vascular death, and all-cause death) are centrally adjudicated. Kaplan–Meier curves show that NVAF patients with COPD are at higher risk for MACE (p < 0.001), CV death (p < 0.001) and all-cause death (p < 0.001). On Cox proportional hazard analysis, COPD is an independent predictor of MACE (Hazard ratio [HR] 1.77, 95% Confidence Intervals [CI] 1.20–2.61; p = 0.004), CV death (HR 2.73, 95% CI 1.76–4.23; p < 0.0001) and all-cause death (HR 2.16, 95% CI 1.48–3.16; p < 0.0001). COPD is an independent predictor of MACE, CV death and all-cause death during a long-term follow-up of NVAF patients.

Habitat mapping ,GEO/04 - GEOGRAFIA FISICA E GEOMORFOLOGIA ,Benthic habitats ,Mediterranean Sea ,Geomorphology ,Habitat mapping, Cold-water corals, Geomorphology, Benthic habitats, Mediterranean Sea ,Cold-water corals - Abstract
Habitat mapping is increasingly considered as a reliable and efficient methodology to explore and represent the complexity and extent of benthic communities. Providing a full-coverage spatial perspective of habitat heterogeneity, is becoming an essential tool in science-based management of natural resources, specifically regarding vulnerable marine ecosystems such as cold-water corals. Here we present two case studies, where we revisit known cold-water coral areas of the Mediterranean Sea and where we apply original habitat mapping techniques. The areas correspond to the Chella Bank, in the Alborán Sea, and the Santa Maria de Leuca cold-water coral province, in the Ionian Sea. The Chella Bank is one of a series of volcanic banks and knolls located in the western Mediterranean that have been described as geologic features hosting vulnerable marine ecosystems. The cold- water coral province off Santa Maria di Leuca represents one of the largest known occurrences of living reef- forming cold-water coral species (i.e. Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) in the Mediterranean Sea, where corals grow on the exposed summits and flanks of mound-like structures (up to 300m wide and 25m high) associated with mass wasting events. Both cases adopt a holistic and integrated study of the environmental characteristics (geology and oceanography) of the observed benthic habitats and aim to map their extent using supervised automated classifications. Multibeam swath bathymetry, the derived acoustic backscatter, sidescan sonar, video footage gathered with a remotely operated vehicle, photo stills from underwater drop camera, and CTD casts where available, have been used together to identify the geological and oceanographic processes that most likely are responsible for the distribution of the observed cold-water corals and associated benthic communities.

- Abstract
During a median 36.0 months follow-up, 186 patients experienced MACE: vascular death (n = 72), MI (n = 57), stroke/TIA (n = 57).

- Abstract
One of Saturn's largest moons, Enceladus, possesses a vast extraterrestrial ocean (i.e., exo-ocean) that is increasingly becoming the hotspot of future research initiatives dedicated to the exploration of putative life. Here, a new bio-exploration concept design for Enceladus' exo-ocean is proposed, focusing on the potential presence of organisms across a wide range of sizes (i.e., from uni- to multicellular and animal-like), according to state-of-the-art sensor and robotic platform technologies used in terrestrial deep-sea research. In particular, we focus on combined direct and indirect life-detection capabilities, based on optoacoustic imaging and passive acoustics, as well as molecular approaches. Such biologically oriented sampling can be accompanied by concomitant geochemical and oceanographic measurements to provide data relevant to exo-ocean exploration and understanding. Finally, we describe how this multidisciplinary monitoring approach is currently enabled in terrestrial oceans through cabled (fixed) observatories and their related mobile multiparametric platforms (i.e., Autonomous Underwater and Remotely Operated Vehicles, as well as crawlers, rovers, and biomimetic robots) and how their modified design can be used for exo-ocean exploration.

Occurrence and abundance of deep-water corals in the Levantine Mediterranean Sea is still largely unknown. This is the first attempt to quantitatively describe a Dendrophyllia ramea population discovered in June 2015 during the CYCLAMEN expedition on board the Research Vessel Aegaeo. This population is the deepest ever described until now in the Mediterranean and was found on the outer insular shelf off eastern Cyprus (Protaras, 35°02′N; 34°05′E). Video transects conducted by means of a remotely operated vehicle revealed a well-developed population of D. ramea located on a sandy seabed at 125–170 m depth. The highest density was 6 colonies m−2 and on average 1.6 ± 1.4 (SD) colonies m−2. The population consists of isolated or piled up branches of various sizes and large colonies, some ∼50 cm max width. The corals thrive on soft bottoms, representing a rather novel aspect of the research on D. ramea, since the species is still considered to be mostly associated with rocky substrates. The occurrence of the species in sedimentary grounds makes it especially vulnerable to bottom contact fishing gears as bottom trawling. Spatial distribution of the coral population, as well as a first attempt to characterize its habitat, are explored as an approach to describe the habitat's suitability and the vulnerability for the species in the area, Sí

- Abstract
Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) in the Mediterranean Sea, where corals grow on the exposed summits and flanks of mound-like structures (up to 300 m wide and 25 m high) associated with mass wasting events.

SummaryAtrial fibrillation (AF) patients are at high risk for thrombotic and vascular events related to their cardiac arrhythmia and underlying systemic atherosclerosis. Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is a non-invasive tool in evaluating systemic atherosclerosis, useful in predicting cardiovascular events in general population; no data are available in AF patients. ARAPACIS is a prospective multicentre observational study performed by the Italian Society of Internal Medicine, analysing association between low ABI (≤0.90) and vascular events in NVAF out- or in-patients, enrolled in 136 Italian centres. A total of 2,027 non-valvular AF (NVAF) patients aged > 18 years from both sexes followed for a median time of 34.7 (interquartile range: 22.0–36.0) months, yielding a total of 4,614 patient-years of observation. Mean age was 73 ± 10 years old with 55% male patients. A total of 176 patients (8.7%) experienced a vascular event, with a cumulative incidence of 3.81%/patient-year. ABI≤ 0.90 was more prevalent in patients with a vascular event compared with patients free of vascular events (32.2 vs 20.2%, p< 0.05). On Cox proportional hazard analysis, ABI≤ 0.90 was an independent predictor of vascular events (hazard ratio (HR): 1.394, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.042–1.866; p=0.02), vascular death (HR: 2.047, 95% CI: 1.255-3.338; p=0.004) and MI (HR: 2.709, 95%> CI: 1.485-5.083; p=0.001). This latter association was also confirmed after excluding patients with previous MI (HR: 2.901, 95% CI: 1.408-5.990, p=0.004). No association was observed between low ABI and stroke/transient ischaemic attack (p=0.91). In conclusion, low ABI is useful to predict MI and vascular death in NVAF patients and may independently facilitate cardiovascular risk assessment in NVAF patients.Note: The review process for this paper was fully handled by C. The main aim of this work is to statistically predict the distribution of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) along the continental shelf regions of the northern Sicilian margin (southern Mediterranean). The considered habitats, already mapped in the area on a qualitative base, are the Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa seagrasses and the Coralligenous biocenosis. Posidonia oceanica and Coralligenous are considered as VMEs owing to their value as environmental indicators and biodiversity hotspots in coastal marine areas. For this reason, several actions were aimed in recent years to their complete characterization and mapping. The study area is located in the continental shelf of the northern Sicily margin, between the Cape San Vito (Gulf of Castellammare) and Cape Zafferano (Gulf of Palermo). Different physical characteristics of the seafloor were extracted from a database acquired in recent years in the frame of official national cartography (CARG) and hazard assessment (MAGIC) Italian Projects, including geological and geophysical data (seabed sampling, ROV footage, multibeam bathymetry, backscatter maps, high resolution seismic reflection records) The ultimate goal is to apply a statistical methodology allowing to predict the distribution of marine habitats from a “presence only” sampling dataset. This target was pursued by using a multidisciplinary approach, including abiotic (i.e. depth, morphological and hydrodynamic features, type of seabed) and biotic components (benthic communities) that define and characterize the mapped habitats. Predictive maps are based on the Maximum Entropy model (MaxEnt), a statistical method based on punctual occurrence of specimen (presence-only). The punctual occurrence of the three habitats was already known, whilst we considered the bathymetry, seabed steepness, aspect, fluid escape, erosional areas and sediment type as physical features for the model. The analysis was also aimed to test the performance of models obtained by choosing the training samples with different criteria. Therefore, different outputs (42 in total) have been produced by selecting samples on the basis of the area (regional analysis), the type of coasts (morphological) or randomly (random). Moreover, the models were built up both with only training samples either with training and test samples to obtain more constrained distribution patterns. Almost all the created predictive models produced good performances, with statistical parameters (gain, AUC standard deviation) very positive on average. The models derived from the regional analysis resulted to be more performing than the others, with the random-derived being the worst. The response curves pointed out that bathymetry and sediment types are the most important physical features influencing the distribution of the mapped VMEs, whereas aspect and slope are not-independent variables. These outputs also provided important information and constraints on the favorable environmental conditions for the three habitats. Results from this preliminary statistical modeling appears potentially useful in the evaluation of important environmental parameters, allowing to draw the broad distribution of marine habitats in areas where only presence data are available, and can represent a contribution in the design and monitoring of marine protected areas.

We present here the results of the morpho-bathymetric analyses of the main submarine canyons along the upper slope off the north-western Sicily. This region developed during the Neogene as the transition area between the Sicilian fold and thrust belt and the Tyrrhenian basin realm. Along the upper slope, a dense network of submarine canyon develops from 80 m water depth up to more than 2000 m, showing a large variability of sizes and morphology. In this area submarine canyons play a crucial role related to the along-slope sedimentary transport and are among the most distinctive features of the submarine seascape. This study is based on a quantitative analysis of a high resolution multibeam data set of the north-western Sicily offshore integrated with the topographic DEM of the adjacent continental region. Very different canyon-related morphological features along the study area mainly suggest the occurrence of top-down gravitational processes along canyons likely originated through a bottom-up evolution. By means of high resolution bathymetric data, we: i) described the main morphological features of submarine canyons; ii) measured the main morphometric parameters along canyon longitudinal profiles; iii) calculated the extension of different lithology outcropping on the river catchment areas corresponding to distinct river-fed canyons. For each analyzed canyon a chart was built in which bathymetric longitudinal profile, catchment area extension and gradient longitudinal profile have been reported. Quantitative analyses of longitudinal profiles reveal that the morpho-sedimentary evolution of mapped canyons is comparable to the corresponding fluvial environment, although presenting some differences. Integrated analysis of offshore data and river catchment areas suggest that the continental slope structural setting as well as the outcropping lithologies could be relevant control factors on the morpho-sedimentary evolution of the NW Sicilian canyons.

Different physical characteristics of the seafloor were extracted from a database acquired in recent years in the frame of official national cartography (CARG) and hazard assessment (MAGIC) Italian Projects, including geological and geophysical data (seabed sampling, ROV footage, multibeam bathymetry, backscatter maps, high resolution seismic reflection records). The ultimate goal is to apply a statistical methodology allowing to predict the distribution of marine habitats from a “presence only” sampling dataset.

During the past decades a number of sequence stratigraphy studies illustrated how, during Quaternary, interaction between sea level changes and sediment supply controlled the depositional evolution along continental margins, giving a cyclic signature to the sedimentary infilling. However, as both deposition and erosion are processes ultimately controlled by balance between environmental energy and sedimentary influx, also the oceanographic regime takes part in controlling the sedimentary growth along the continental margin. This is exactly what occurs on physiographic settings as islands offshore areas, where bottom currents can be very energetic. In the western Sicily offshore, southwards of Egadi Islands, the sea floor is characterized by depositional and erosional features formed under a variety of sedimentary processes and offers opportunity to investigate as sea level change and oceanographic regime combine each other to control depositional evolution. In this area, located along the clockwise flow of the Levantine Intermediate Water around the western Sicily margin, the sea floor morphology is very irregular as consequence of isolated reliefs and narrow submarine valleys, such as the Marettimo Valley which separates Favignana and Marettimo islands. We analysed and interpreted a grid of high-resolution (1 kJ Sparker) seismic reflection profiles integrated with multibeam bathy-morphologic data of selected areas; a 270 cm long gravity core has been also collected for sedimentology and biostratigraphy. The sedimentary succession accommodated along the eastern flank of the Marettimo Valley shows two different seismic units: unit A displays reflection-free seismic facies and thin, low- amplitude, inclined reflectors with downlap terminations onto the lower boundary, and erosional truncation at the upper boundary; these seismic facies are referable to oblique-tangential clinoforms and show a wedge-shaped external geometry. Unit B shows continuous, parallel, slightly concave reflectors and, towards the central sector of the Valley, continuous, sub-horizontal reflectors that form a deposit having a very broad low-mounded geometry; lateral transition in between concave and sub-horizontal reflectors is characterized by channelized erosional truncations. The two seismic units can be interpreted as the sedimentary response of different depositional processes: unit A accumulated by progradation of shallow-water deposits during eustatic forced-regression; unit B is referable to contourite drifts deposited by bottom currents through the Marettimo Valley. This unusual interbedding of very shallow water contouritic and shelf margin deposits derives from enhanced sedimentary dynamics during sea-level fall and lowstand stages when, as consequence of decreased water depth of the Marettimo Valley, bottom currents accelerated scouring channelized erosional surfaces; in the same time, deposition of forced regression across the shelf margin buried contourite drifts.

We present in this paper different studies on canyon systems, adopting distinct approaches, temporal and spatial scales. Most of our study areas coincide with the NW Sicilian canyons, which present striking differences in their morphologies in response to the Plio-Quaternary tectonic evolution of the northern Sicilian margin. In the present-day, active sedimentary processes inferred from bedform analyses along some of the studied canyons could drive to enhanced biological activities along them. This is also confirmed by an on-going study of the impact of trawling fishery on the morphology and sedimentary environments of the Sicilian margin, where intense deep-sea bottom trawling activities are registered in some of the canyons. Finally, we present the main results of the application of habitat distribution models in the Cap de Creus Canyon (NW Mediterranean), considering them as possible contributions in developing sustainable methods for the management of natural resources. The multidisciplinary and holistic perspective that raises from these studies suggests that the integration of different approaches should be considered by future scientific networks looking at submarine canyons as dynamic, interactive natural systems.

- Abstract
The Mediterranean black coral fauna includes type species of four antipatharian genera belonging to four different families, therefore phylogenetic studies hold great potential for enhancing systematics within the order. The analysis of six Mediterranean antipatharian species by means of nuclear sequence data of internal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) rDNA confirms the separation into different families, as was previously noted on a morphological basis, with a clear distinction of the family Leiopathidae, whose position is supported by a unique number of mesenteries and lack of spines on thicker ramifications. The position of a newly recorded black coral species for the Mediterranean basin belonging to the genus Phanopathes is discussed. Antipathes dichotoma, the type species of the genus Antipathes, on which the order Antipatharia was based, does not group with other members of the family Antipathidae. Supporting a recent finding based on mitochondrial markers, this suggests a critical need for revision of the families that will be impacted by reassignment of this nomenclaturally important taxon.

- Abstract
Cold-water carbonate bioconstructions are the product of complex interactions between calcifying organisms and the surrounding environment, and deeply contribute in affecting the evolution of the submarine landscape in space and time. Important variables contributing to their development, growth and/or demise include sedimentary dynamics, food supply, physical and chemical characteristics of water masses and local hydrodynamic regimes. Geomorphological studies of bioconstructions are therefore critical in deciphering the physical and biological processes contributing to their development. The aim of this chapter is to summarise the state of the art of geomorphic studies on temperate coralligenous bioconstructions and cold-water coral reefs/mound systems, both representing the two most important and largest carbonate bioconstructions in temperate and deep-sea waters. The importance of these biogenic constructions covers several aspects. They can represent important carbonate factories of the deep sea, archives of past climate and oceanographic conditions and they support increased species diversity and complex biotic interactions with respect to the surrounding seafloor. Because of their remote location (from hundreds to thousands of meters below sea level), only since the last tens of years, technological advances are allowing fine-scale physical and ecological investigations of these bioconstructions, containing ecosystem engineers able to strongly modify the landscape heterogeneity. An increased awareness of their potential extension and significance as natural resource, is now steering scientific efforts towards the need to overcome the gaps in knowledge and contribute to prevent their vulnerability to an increasing human pressure

OBJECTIVE: Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a surrogate marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and it is able to predict both coronary and cerebral vascular events. No data exist on the association between cIMT and non valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) type. We conduct this study with the aim to analyze the association between abnormal cIMT and NVAF type. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of the "Atrial fibrillation Registry for Ankle-brachial index Prevalence Assessment-Collaborative Italian Study (ARAPACIS)" has been performed. Among 2027 patients enrolled in the ARAPACIS, 673 patients, who underwent carotid ultrasound examination to assess cIMT, were included in the study. RESULTS: Among the entire population, 478 patients (71%) had cIMT > 0.90 mm. Patients with an abnormal cIMT (>0.90 mm) were significantly older and more likely hypertensive, diabetic and with a previous history of stroke than those with normal cIMT (≤0.90 mm). These patients had more permanent/persistent NVAF and CHA2DS2-VASc score ≥ 2 (p < 0.0001) compared to those with cIMT

benthos, cold-water corals, Scleractinia, Gibraltar - Abstract
Coarse carbonate sediments of cold-water coral (CWC) mounds are almost exclusively produced by scleractinian corals and associated calcifying organisms. Due to the sensitivity of several species to environmental changes, variations of benthic carbonate associations (BCA) through time can provide important insights on mound development stages. This study focuses on the BCA collected, through box- and gravity cores, from CWC mounds located in the Melilla Mound Field (MMF) and Pen Duick Escarpment (PDE). The main goal of this work is to characterize the composition of modern and fossil BCA and to relate its variation through time to oceanographic changes at regional and/or global scale. Our preliminary results are based on the analysis of samples collected during the MD 194 cruise and previous oceanographic expeditions (MD 169 and Belgica 09/14b). Observations on modern fauna from the PDE mounds have been carried out also on ROV videos collected during the Belgica 07/13 and 09/14b cruises. The modern BCA of the two examined mound areas are rather different. The PDE mound biocoenoses are characterized by scarce and low-diverse calcifying organisms that colonise dense (mostly fossil) dendrophylliid frameworks or rubble sparse in mud-dominated sediment. The modern MMF BCA are more diversified, dominated by Madrepora oculata and particularly rich in molluscs and bryozoans. Similarities found in the faunistic assemblages of the examined sediment cores hint at comparable environmental conditions in the past that favoured the development of Lophelia-dominated communities on both sides of the Gibraltar Strait

Cold-water coral (CWC) mounds located along the Atlantic and Mediterranean margins have been subject of intensive research during the last 15 years. Data collected in over a hundred of oceanographic cruises have highly increased our knowledge on CWC mound typologies, settings and on the environmental factors controlling their evolution. Nevertheless, there is still a poor knowledge about calcifying benthic organisms characterizing CWC communities, though their skeletal accumulation represents the dominant component of most mound facies and can provide important insights on the mound evolutionary stages. This study focuses on benthic carbonate associations (BCA) collected, through box- and gravity cores, from selected CWC mounds located in four key regions: 1. Santa Maria di Leuca CWC Province, Ionian Sea, Central Mediterranean; 2. Melilla Mound Field, Alboran Sea, Western Mediterranean; 3. Pen Duick scarpment, Gulf of Cadiz, NE Atlantic; 4. Moira Mounds, Porcupine Seabight, NE Atlantic. The main goals of this work are (1) to characterize modern BCA (bio- and thanatocoenoses) from the examined sites and to relate their spatial distribution to patterns in environmental variables and (2) to identify and interpret BCA variations through time in order to better understand the mound evolutionary processes. Our preliminary results show that the modern BCA from the four analyzed regions share major common taxonomic components. Their spatial distribution, either within a single region or a single mound, is mostly influenced by local environmental variables such as the seafloor topography, the substrate composition and the intensity of bottom currents. However, NE Atlantic and Mediterranean coral-dominated BCA can be easily distinguished due to the presence of characteristic taxa, among which the solitary scleractinian Carophyllia sarsiae and the gastropod Amphissa acutecostata, common to abundant in the NE Atlantic CWC sites and absent (or rarely present as fossil) in the Mediterranean ones. Moreover, modern coral-dominated BCA from the Pen Duick Escarpment (Gulf of Cadiz), with a prevalent presence of dendrophylliid corals and a peculiar associated fauna, are clearly distinct from the Mediterranean and the Porcupine Seabight fields, dominated by Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa respectively. Interestingly, although the modern NE Atlantic communities are known to be more diversified than the Mediterranean ones, the BCA from the Moira Mounds (NE Atlantic) show the lowest number of taxa among the examined sites. On the contrary, the benthic calcifying organisms (in particular molluscs) from the Alboran Sea mounds seem to be the most diversified and larger in size. Regarding the temporal distribution of the examined BCA from CWC mounds, several variations observed along the gravity cores seem to be related to environmental changes at a local scale. However the appearance/disappearance of specific taxa and/or morphotypes (e.g. thick-walled Lophelia pertusa) as well as striking variations in the relative abundance of taxonomic groups hints at larger-scale oceanographic and sedimentary variations, probably related to climatic oscillations.

We present here the first results of the analysis and interpretation of the swath bathymetry and side scan sonar data collected along the southeastern outer shelf and upper slope regions of the Cyprus insular margin (offshore Cape Greco). The resultant bathymetric model and the derivatives (e.g.: slope, aspect, benthic position index) are presented and analyzed in order to describe the morphology of the seabed and the main geomorphological features through quantitative indicators including morphometric indexes and statistical descriptors. The presence of deep sea coral communities (Dendrophylia ramea) in a particular location of the surveyed area is also discussed and tentatively related to the landscape morphology where the colonies are settled

The Map Sheet 1:50.000 595 ”Palermo” includes marine and land areas of the topographic map sheet “Palermo”. The map sheet “Palermo” (Palermo Province) covers a part of the Sicily Fold and Thrust Belt (FTB) which has developed along the plate boundary between Africa and Europe in the Central Mediterranean. The Sicily FTB links the African Maghrebide to the Calabrian arc and Southern Apennines. The FTB and its submerged western and northern extensions are part- ly located between the Sardinia block and the Pelagian-Ionian sector, and partly beneath the central southern Tyrrhenian Sea. In this sector of the Mediterranean area, the main compressional move- ments, after the Paleogene Alpine orogeny, began with the latest Oligocene-Early Miocene counterclockwise rotation of Corsica-Sardinia, believed to represent a volcanic arc, and its collision with the African continental margin. Thrusting oc- curred in connection with the westward subduction of the Adriatic and Ionian lithosphere beneath the Corsica-Sardinia block. Today, a westward subduction is indicated by a North-dipping Benioff zone, as deep as 400 km, west of Calabria and the Apennines, and the related calc- alkaline volcanism in the Eolian Islands. Subduction and thrusting are contempo- raneous with a back arc-type extension in the Tyrrhenian Sea.186 LAND AREAS geomorphoLogy Three different sectors can be distinguished in Sheet 595: 1) the Palermo and Bagheria coastal plains, characterized by several poly- cyclic marine terraces organized in different orders; 2) the isolated carbonate reliefs of Monte Pellegrino and Monte Catalfano; 3) the internal Belmonte Mezzagno highlands and the Oreto and Eleuterio river valleys. The geomorphological evolution of the area has been controlled by strong down-cutting and dismantling processes that have produced both the erosion of thick volumes of mainly Tertiary terrigenous deposits and the exhumation of mainly Mesozoic carbonate rocks. Due to tectonic uplifting, these proces- ses are intensely developed on ”soft rocks “(Numidian Flysch clayey deposits), producing large river valleys with slopes affected by water erosion and surficial landslides (valleys of Fiume Oreto, Fiume Eleuterio and Fiume Milicia); they have, however, considerably slowed down along the blocks of more resistant rock (Mesozoic-Tertiary carbonate units), forming the wide Palermo Mountains. At the present-day, relict (planation surfaces and abandoned valleys), structural (fault/fault-line scarps) and karst (sinkholes and polje) forms occur in the highlan- ds. The geomorphological setting of the coastal areas has been influenced more by significant Quaternary extensional tectonics that originated the drowning of the northern sectors of the Sicilian chain in the Tyrrhenian Sea above which the marine deposition was deposited (Marsala synthem). The uplifting, involving also the lowered blocks, has resulted in the progressive retreat of the sea that gave origin to a succession of marine terraces, Ionian-Latest Pleistocene in age, and fi- nally the emersion of the present-day coastal depressions (Palermo and Bagheria plains). During the Upper Pleistocene to Holocene, the uplifting rates reached values generally lower than 0.1 m/ky. stratIgraphy The carbonate and terrigenous rock facies analysis and stratigraphy led to the recognition of large Paleozoic to Miocene sedimentary bodies pertaining to diffe- rent and separate crustal paleogeographic domains; the former, developed along the African passive continental margin and the adjacent Tethyan ocean. The “Tethyan” successions correspond to the deep clayey carbonate and vol- canoclastic rocks known to have been deposited in the Sicilide Domain. The pas- sive margin rock bodies are shallow water carbonates, deep water carbonates and 187 siliceous carbonates that were deposited in domains, locally known as Panormide, Trapanese and, Imerese. Terrigenous, evaporitic and clastic-carbonate rocks, Miocene to Pleistocene in age, formed during the foredeep evolution of the Sicilian FTB. A detailed stratigraphy of the rock-successions is summarized in the paragraph “Legend of the Palermo Sheet”. Quaternary continental deposits have been mapped as unconformity-bounded stratigraphic units limited by lower and upper unconformities, locally marked by palaeosoils, due to erosion/depositional processes, marine/sub-aerial processes or non-depositional events. Locally, the upper boundaries are the present-day topo- graphic surface. The detection of some unconformities of regional extent allowed us to define several synthems. The Marsala synthem is a Lower Pleistocene body of marine/coastal deposits, with abundant fossils; its lower boundary is a mari- ne erosion surface cutting pre-Quaternary rocks. The Buonfornello-Campofelice synthem is composed of middle Pleistocene marine deposits covering abrasion surfaces above the coastal stepped blocks. The Polisano synthem is made up of aeolian sandstones and sands with intercalations of breccias talus, late Middle Pleistocene in age (OIS 6); its lower boundary is a non-depositional surface at the top of older rocks. Eleuterio and Milicia synthems are made up of Middle-Upper Pleistocene, mainly fluvial, deposits deposited on river terrace surfaces; their lo- wer boundary is a stream erosion surface. The Benincasa synthem includes colluvial Middle-Upper Pleistocene deposits of Qz-sandstones interbedded with stone-line, palaeosoils, Fe-rich layers and no- dular concretions. Its lower boundary is an unconformity above the Buonfornello- Campofelice synthem, the upper one is the base of the Capo Plaia synthem of the present soil. The Barcarello synthem encompasses marine/coastal conglomerates and are- nites, with a rich warm-temperate “Senegal fauna” including Strombus bubonius; it is located on two orders of marine terraces (OISs 5e and 5c or 5a) and laterally passes into welded colluvial deposits whose age is correlated with the OIS 5. The lower boundary of the synthem is a marine abrasion surface, laterally extending to a continental erosion surface; the latter is cutting the Polisano synthem or older rocks. The Raffo Rosso synthem consists of aeolian sandstones and sands, collu- vial or gravitational deposits and thick stratified slope deposits of the last glacial climatic event (OISs 4-2); the lower boundary is a non-depositional surface at the top of the Barcarello synthem or older rocks. The Capo Plaia synthem is made up of coastal to continental deposits of the last glacial climatic event of the end - Holocene age (OISs 2-1); its lower boundary is formed by variously origina- ted erosion or non-depositional surfaces; the upper boundary is the topographic surface.188 struCturaL graIn The Paleozoic to Cenozoic, mainly carbonate sedimentary bodies, developed in different sectors of the African passive continental margin and the adjacent Tethyan ocean and were progressively accreted in a pile of tectonic units and are now exposed to form the Sicilian fold and thrust belt. To define the extension and setting of these bodies versus their internal facies pattern, we individuate them as Structural-Stratigraphic Units (U.S.S.), described as large geological bodies per- taining to original paleogeographic domains from where they were removed and later deformed. These bodies are bounded by clearly mappable tectonic features (faults, thrust, etc.) and each of them is characterized by homogeneous lithologies and similar structural behaviours and settings. The outcropping tectonic edifice, in the “Palermo” Sheet, is composed of se- veral U.S.S., which can be locally subdivided into tectonic units of minor order. These subunits have been mapped on the basis of their tectonic relationships. Some U.S.S. have been identified, starting from the geometrically highest and most internal in the FTB. 1) U.S.S. deriving from the deformation of the Sicilide domain succession: - U.S.S. Tusa-Troina outcropping in the south-eastern sector, overlying the Numidian Flysch deposits. 2) U.S.S. deriving from the deformation of the Imerese domain succession and its overlying numidian flysch basin. The units widely outcrop in the cen- tral and southern sector of the geological sheet where Mesozoic deep water carbonates and their oligo-miocene numidian flysch covers are deformed, with the latter often slightly detached from the carbonate substrate. Among them we distinguished: - U.S.S. Sagana - Belmonte Mezzagno, in the western sector, where we indi- viduated the sub-unit Pizzuta-S.Cristina; - U.S.S. Monte Cane-San Calogero, in the eastern sector, subdivided into a) the subunit Monte Cane-S. Onofrio, overlying b) the subunit Bizolelli; 3) U.S.S. deriving from the deformation of the Panormide Domain. The U.S.S. consists of Meso-Cenozoic shelf to pelagic carbonates and the often detached nu- midian flysch cover, pertaining to the U.S.S. M. Gallo-M. Palmeto, forming the margin of the Panormide Platform. It outcrops only at Monte Pellegrino (subunit Pellegrino). 4) U.S.S. deriving from the deformation of the Trapanese domain. It is recognizable only in the seismic profile crossing the eastern sector where it is overlain by the U.S.S. Sagana - Belmonte Mezzagno. Southwards, it oucrops at Monte Balatelle (U.S.S. Kumeta-Balatelle).189 Structural evolution The tectonic edifice outcropping and buried beneath the area of the Palermo Sheet is the result of several deformational events that have taken place since the Triassic, deforming complexly the sedimentary successions deposited during the Mesozoic-Pleistocene. After the detachment from their crystalline basement the original sedimentary bodies were progressively accreted in a pile of tectonic units now exposed in the Sicilian chain. Two main events have occurred during the Miocene and Pleistocene time interval. They are respectively characterized by compression and transpression. Contraction originally involved the Tethyan domains and the internal domains of the continental margin, whose deep water meso-cenozoic carbonates formed the structurally highest tectonic units in the chain. The occurrence of intrastratal decollement originated duplex geometries. Since the Messinian, the deformation moved at depth, progressively involving the carbonate platform rock bodies in large E-W antiforms that were successively (during Late Pliocene) folded by NE- SW structures. The transpressional event is proved by NNW-SSE and NE-SW transcurrent and transpressive structures (dextral); it involves the deep-seated car- bonate platform-forming fold structures and severe uplifting that induces reimbri- cation in the overlying Imerese deep-water units. This transpressive event accom- panies the paleomagnetically evidenced thrust rotations between the Late Miocene and the Early Pleistocene. An abrupt change in the tectonic transport direction of the two compressional structure systems is explained taking into account the 120° clockwise rotations based on the paleomagnetic results of ChanneL et alii (1980, 1990); speranza et alii (2000). As a consequence the present day outcropping structural attitude of the structures (and consequently of the deformation fields) do not coincide with the original trends. The compressional and traspressional structures are down faulted northwards by the extensional tectonics. MARINE AREAS In the marine areas, we distinguished different morphological environments, from beaches through the offshore (inner shelf), to the outer shelf and upper slope where two confined slope basins (Palermo and Termini basins, separated by the Monte Catalfano salient) represent the south-western margin of the large Cefalù basin. The substrate of these basins is represented by the Sicilian FTB tectonic units and their syn- and post-orogenic covers. The area shows a lateral variation from the rocky shores, in front of Monte Pellegrino and Monte Catalfano and in the eastern sector, to the beaches mainly in the central sector.190 Important physiographic changes, as shelf width and gradient and different coast orientations, characterise the continental shelf and slope and influence the hydrodynamic processes (wave activity and shelf current patterns). The continental shelf reaches 250 km2 and shows width values ranging from 1.5 km in the Capo Zafferano offshore to 8,0 km in the gulf of Termini, whereas gradient values range between 1° and 8°. The continental shelf has been subdi- vided into an inner infralittoral domain down to a 30 - 35 m water depth, which is characterized by an abrasion platform at different depths, and the outer shelf domain extends to the shelf edge. The shelf edge, which is both depositional and erosional, located at water depths between 120 m and 140 m, rises to lower depths at the canyon heads. Dominant morphological features along the continental slope are the submari- ne erosive conduits, locally interesting also the continental shelf. The heads of the conduits are characterised by severe episodes of retrogressive failure and incised by small gullies. Some (the Oreto and Eleuterio canyons) are directly linked to rivers and were connected during the last glacial maximum through incised val- leys, now buried by transgressive to highstand deposits. In the central sector of the Gulf of Palermo, we pinpointed almost three pockmarks, depressions tens of meters deep, originating from escaping fluids, while in the western sector of the gulf the same phenomena caused the occurrence of isolated or aligned, outcrop- ping or buried mounds. Finally anthropic features largely characterize the seabottom mainly in the inner shelf. seIsmostratIgraphy and stratIgraphIC settIng The buried sedimentary succession has been investigated by means of a close grid of single and multichannel seismic lines. On the whole, three seismic units (S, C and A) have been distinguished. The S seismic unit represents the offshore prolongation of the Meso-Cenozoic units of the Sicilian FTB and their syn- and post-orogenic cover. They are ge- nerally topped by a pronounced, erosive unconformity, correlated to the exten- sive Messinian horizon, generated during the last phases of the Mediterranean Salinity Crisis (5.5 Ma), and covered by a transparent seismic unit representing the Globigerina - bearing pelagic chalk (Trubi) and the Upper (?) Pliocene slope to shelfal deposits. The C seismic unit is represented by a prograding succession of 4° to 7° dip- ping horizons, which have been correlated with the regressive upper Pliocene- Pleistocene deposits, topped by the regional wide, erosional truncation related to the last glacioeustatic sea level fall, correlated with the δ18 O isotopic stage 2. The A seismic unit corresponds to the Late Pleistocene to Holocene 191 depositional sequence (SDTQ) with sigmoidal to tabular geometry; the deposi- tional sequence consists of a Falling Stage and Lowstand Systems Tracts with a progadational pattern controlling a relevant out-building of the shelf margin and a sedimentary wedge, of variable thickness, made up of the Transgressive (TST) and the Highstand (HST) Systems Tracts. The TST, developed during the Holocene sea level rise, shows a retrograda- tional stacking pattern, while the HST, deposited during the last 6 ka b.P., shows aggradational to faintly progradational geometries, related to the development of a littoral depositional system. Along the upper slope, turbiditic systems, characterized by erosive conduits and scattered mass wasting, developed extensively during the Late Pleistocene to Holocene. Surficial sediments of the continental shelf and slope The continental shelf and slope of the Palermo sheet are veneered with uncon- solidated, late Holocene in age, clastic and biogenic carbonate (Palermo gulf) and in second order, lithoclastic (Termini gulf) sediments. Deposits are composed of sands, relict Pleistocene and older carbonate parti- cles, abundant biogenic carbonate granules and algal-coated grains. In the outer shelf and upper slope, deposits are predominantly fine to very fine grained (silts and silty clays). The inner shelf is veneered by a mixture of gravel (rarely), coarse to fine sands, silts and clays, showing a general trend of decrea- sing size in a general seaward direction. From the sedimentary and the morphological features, four different depo- sitional systems have been distinguished: foreshore depositional systems, inner shelf depositional systems, outer shelf depositional systems and upper slope de- positional systems, mapped as g8 , g19 , g21 , m2 respectively. The systems are laterally gradational and linked by a variety of sedimentary processes. Shallow marine environments (up to a 50 m water depth) are generally characterized by biogenic sediments while terrigenous and carbonate clastic sedi- ments supplied by rivers or coastal erosion locally prevail. The most important facies of the infralittoral domain consists of Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa meadows, which extensively cover the rocky substrate or the sandy floors the former and the muddy floors the latter. teCtonIC evoLutIon of the offshore areas The present day structural setting reconstructed in the Palermo sheet marine sectors appears the same as the tectonic edifice depicted on the mainland: it has 192 been interpreted as a consequence of the complex Neogene to Quaternary tectonic evolution. The compressive tectonics, responsible for the wedging of the present day submerged thrust sheets, developed during the Late Miocene span interval. This event was followed by transpressive tectonics that faulted and folded the Late Neogene to Pliocene infill by activation of high-angle, deep faults. During the Pleistocene, extensional tectonics accounted for opening and subsidence of structural lows. Present day active tectonics is still going on, as documented by compressive- transpressive focal mechanisms of shallow to deep, low amplitude earthquakes occurring along the offshore between the Sicilian coast and Ustica Island. A few middle-late Pleistocene marine terraces, outcropping along the coast at different levels, suggest a prolonged, faintly tectonic uplift. On the whole, the Plio-Quaternary geological evolution of the offshore area appears to be constrained by a strong interaction between eustatic sea level chan- ges, sediment supply and tectonics, recorded by strain features and enhanced un- conformities crossing the basin fill.
