We use the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory to search for air showers initiated by photons with an energy above 1019 eV. Photons in the zenith angle range from 30∘ to 60∘ can be identified in the overwhelming background of showers initiated by charged cosmic rays through the broader time structure of the signals induced in the water-Cherenkov detectors of the array and the steeper lateral distribution of shower particles reaching ground. Applying the search method to data collected between January 2004 and June 2020, upper limits at 95% CL are set to an E-2 diffuse flux of ultra-high energy photons above 1019 eV, 2 × 1019 eV and 4 × 1019 eV amounting to 2.11 × 10-3, 3.12 × 10-4 and 1.72 × 10-4 km-2 sr-1 yr-1, respectively. While the sensitivity of the present search around 2 × 1019 eV approaches expectations of cosmogenic photon fluxes in the case of a pure-proton composition, it is one order of magnitude above those from more realistic mixed-composition models. The inferred limits have also implications for the search of super-heavy dark matter that are discussed and illustrated.

13. A Multi-Sensor Tactile System Based on Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors for Soft Tissue Palpation

- Abstract
Superficial tissue palpation is a clinical examination to detect tumors in soft tissue, like breast, by applying variable forces on its surface. Recently, instrumented tactile probes based on different technologies (e.g., electrical and optical sensors) were developed to quantitatively detect changes in tissue stiffness, improving the chances of early tumor diagnosis. Among many options to develop tactile probes, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are gaining increasing traction, thanks to their superior potentials (e.g., high sensitivity, small dimensions, electromagnetic immunity interferences, and multiplexing capability). This study proposed a multi-FBG sensors tactile system for superficial breast palpation, as an optimization of a previously designed prototype, in terms of dimensions and number of sensors. It represents the first step toward the creation of a matrix of sensors for optimizing tumor identification. In detail, a three-FBG array was integrated into a 3-D-printed structure to simultaneously investigate multiple measurement sites, enhance the system’s spatial resolution, and minimize the probe encumbrance. The design of the system was guided by a finite element analysis (FEA). Then, a metrological characterization was performed, focusing on the investigation of the FBGs sensitivity to force and analysis of the crosstalk effects among sensors within the same structure. Subsequently, palpation tests on phantoms mimicking soft tissues with a tumor were conducted, revealing the ability of the fabricated system to detect stiffer materials within flexible substrates. These findings make the proposed system an ideal candidate for diagnostic tissue palpation.

The measurement of the mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays constitutes a prime challenge in astroparticle physics. Most detailed information on the composition can be obtained from measurements of the depth of maximum of air showers, $X_{\mathrm{max}}$, with the use of fluorescence telescopes, which can be operated only during clear and moonless nights. Using deep neural networks, it is now possible for the first time to perform an event-by-event reconstruction of $X_{\mathrm{max}}$ with the Surface Detector (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Therefore, previously recorded data can be analyzed for information on $X_{\mathrm{max}}$, and thus, the cosmic-ray composition. Since the SD operates with a duty cycle of almost $100\%$ and its event selection is less strict than for the Fluorescence Detector (FD), the gain in statistics with respect to the FD is almost a factor of 15 for energies above $10^{19.5}~\mathrm{eV}$. In this contribution, we introduce the neural network particularly designed for the SD of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We evaluate its performance using three different hadronic interaction models, verify its functionality using Auger hybrid measurements, and find that the method can extract mass information on an event level.

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of highenergy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data are provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above ∼50 EeV are provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for pointsource searches to search for excesses of neutrino clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses have found a significant excess, and previously reported overfluctuations are reduced in significance. To obtain direct measurements of the muon content of extensive air showers with energy above $10^{16.5}$ eV, the Pierre Auger Observatory is currently being equipped with an underground muon detector (UMD), consisting of 219 10 $\mathrm{m^2}$-modules, each segmented into 64 scintillators coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). Direct access to the shower muon content allows for the study of both of the composition of primary cosmic rays and of high-energy hadronic interactions in the forward direction. As the muon density can vary between tens of muons per m$^2$ close to the intersection of the shower axis with the ground to much less than one per m$^2$ when far away, the necessary broad dynamic range is achieved by the simultaneous implementation of two acquisition modes in the read-out electronics: the binary mode, tuned to count single muons, and the ADC mode, suited to measure a high number of them. In this work, we present the end-to-end calibration of the muon detector modules: first, the SiPMs are calibrated by means of the binary channel, and then, the ADC channel is calibrated using atmospheric muons, detected in parallel to the shower data acquisition. The laboratory and field measurements performed to develop the implementation of the full calibration chain of both binary and ADC channels are presented and discussed. The calibration procedure is reliable to work with the high amount of channels in the UMD, which will be operated continuously, in changing environmental conditions, for several years., Published version, 25 pages, 12 figures, 0 tables
