Abstract

The helminth communities of two populations of green frogs from both shores of the Alborán Sea (Western Mediterranean) were studied. Of the 79 frogs examined for helminths, 39 individuals of the species Rana saharica were collected from Bab-Taza (Morocco), and 40 of the species Rana perezi were collected from the Natural Park of the Sierra de Grazalema (Spain). Although the species richness of helminths was identical in the two sampled areas, the differences observed in the structure of the helminth infracommunities were quite important. Statistically, significant differences were found between the species richness and the diversity of the infracommunities of R. perezi female population and the other three studied statistical populations. The helminth component communities of these two green frogs can be considered as depauperate, although their infracommunities present interactive features.

32. Goal-setting strategy and psychological differences in marathon runners compared by gender

Abstract

Prior to a marathon race, we conducted a cross sectional study with 122 male and 18 female recreational runners at the Expo. Demographic information, running experience, competition level, training details, goal and finishing times, and PODIUM questionnaire on psychological state variables were collected. Motivation, training volume, experience, and relative performance were comparable between male and female marathon runners. However, men were more ambitious and perceived higher self-confidence and fitness, although overestimated their goals (Mdif = -10.4, SD = 16.7] minutes, p < .001). Women perceived higher social support, reported higher anxiety levels, were more accurate in their estimates (Mdif = -0.1, SD = 17.2 minutes, p = .988). Women were also more open than men to consult with (RR = 3.39, 95% CI [1.14, 10.11]) and to remunerate (RR = 1.47, 95% CI [1.18, 1.83]) sport psychologists. Differences in competitiveness might be explained by orientation to competition, personal identity, gender roles and stereotypes, or other physiologic mechanisms. Together with the tendency in men athletes to less likely seek help, been aware of these tendencies could be of help for both sport psychologists and coaches when working with marathon runners.

Abstract

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) consensus conference on testicular cancer was held on 3-5 November 2016 in Paris, France. The conference included a multidisciplinary panel of 36 leading experts in the diagnosis and treatment of testicular cancer (34 panel members attended the conference; an additional two panel members [CB and K-PD] participated in all preparatory work and subsequent manuscript development). The aim of the conference was to develop detailed recommendations on topics relating to testicular cancer that are not covered in detail in the current ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and where the available level of evidence is insufficient. The main topics identified for discussion related to: (1) diagnostic work-up and patient assessment; (2) stage I disease; (3) stage II-III disease; (4) post-chemotherapy surgery, salvage chemotherapy, salvage and desperation surgery and special topics; and (5) survivorship and follow-up schemes. The experts addressed questions relating to one of the five topics within five working groups. Relevant scientific literature was reviewed in advance. Recommendations were developed by the working groups and then presented to the entire panel. A consensus vote was obtained following whole-panel discussions, and the consensus recommendations were then further developed in post-meeting discussions in written form. This manuscript presents the results of the expert panel discussions, including the consensus recommendations and a summary of evidence supporting each recommendation. All participants approved the final manuscript.

Abstract

The collinear reaction of Fe+ (4F) and Fe+ (6D) with H2 leading to FeH+ and H has been studied at the configuration interaction (CI) level of theory, using a relativistic pseudopotential approach. The 6D electronic state of Fe+ reacts with H2 through a very large energy barrier that slightly exceeds the endothermicity of the reaction. Abstract

The electronic states of FeH+ dissociating into Fe+ (6D) and H (2S) have been studied at the restricted open Hartree–Fock (ROHF) and configuration interaction (CI) level of theory, using a pseudopotential approach and considering or not relativistic effects. The ground state appears to be a 5Δ at the ROHF level but inclusion of correlation effects leads to a 5Π ground state. Nevertheless both states exhibit in all cases a near degeneracy. The calculated D0 is about 90% of the experimental value at the CI level whereas ROHF calculations account only for about 25% of the experimental dissociation energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations of hydration effects on rigid solutes characterizing the reactant, transition state (TS), and product for the rate limiting step of an acid catalized rearrangement of an a-acetylenic alcohol to α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds are calculated. The model compound corresponds to the protonated 3 methyl-but-1-yne-3-o1. The electronic structure and geometry of the corresponding species are determined with ab initio analytical gradient techniques; a 4-31G basis set has been used. Electrostatic and solute shape effects on samples having 125 MCY–water molecules at 300 K have been examined. Gurney’s model for ion–molecule interactions has been adopted. Although the solute–water potential used is very simple, the results on hydration energetics appear to be fairly reasonable. Solute shapes are found to play a significant role in producing differential solvation effects. Electrostrictive effects have been made evident by running MC simulations with fully uncharged solutes. A solvent activation barrier is detected. From the study of the TS solvation structures a possible incidence of ionic strength, counterion presence, and structure-making or breaking solutes can be conjectured. The structural features found for the solvation sheaths of reactant, TS, and product are in excellent agreement with the postulated molecular mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
