Childhood dementias are a group of rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorders, characterised by global cognitive decline, loss of previously acquired developmental skills and behaviours and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Batten disease, or neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, and Sanfilippo syndrome, or mucopolysaccharidosis type III, are two of the more common forms of childhood dementia disorders worldwide. While psychosocial interventions are the best available therapeutic approach for BPSD management in adult-onset dementia, there is very limited literature or clinical experience in the context of childhood dementia. To address this gap, we conducted a descriptive case analysis of BPSD profiles, associated contributing factors and targeted psychosocial interventions in two cases with childhood dementia disorders (Sanfilippo syndrome and CLN3 (juvenile onset) Batten disease) who were referred to Dementia Support Australia, a national dementia behaviour support service in Australia. Primary BPSD identified in these disorders included physical and verbal aggression and irritability/lability. In these cases, contributing factors to the development of BPSD were not monolithic, encompassing pain, caregiver's approach and over or under-stimulation. Improvement in BPSD were observed using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory-Quesionnaire and globally noted as per the qualitative feedback reported by family and caregivers. Person-centred, multimodal psychosocial interventions were recognised as effective therapies in resolving BPSD in these cases. In conclusion, the case studies described the nature and presentation of BPSD in two common forms of childhood dementia and demonstrated the potential benefits of person-centred psychosocial interventions (delivered through national dementia-specific support programs) in alleviating BPSD such as irritability and aggression in these disorders. These dancers embrace the feelings and flows of soloing musicians going off and breaking free from any predictable form and structure. We inquire into how world-class salsa dancers and educators feel themselves moved by such intricate rhythms to experience soul connections. Road decommissioning is an increasingly important tool for restoring watersheds on national forest lands. Wildland roads can result in a number of negative impacts leading to decreased terrestrial and aquatic habitat quality. It is believed, therefore, that road decommissioning can have significant positive effects on a watershed—cleaner water, improved fisheries, and restored habitat for terrestrial animals. However, very little research has been conducted to quantify these benefits. In 1998, the Clearwater National Forest (CNF) and Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) began an intensive road decommissioning program after extensive flooding caused hundreds of landslides in 1995-1996. Since the program’s inception, more than 500 miles of roads have been decommissioned. Neither the CNF nor the NPT can sustain the budget and personnel necessary to monitor how effectively these projects are restoring fish and wildlife habitat. Data collected through a citizen monitoring program will fill this need. Citizen science is a popular and powerful way to monitor the long-term trends and conditions of natural systems while also encouraging a stewardship ethic for the resources being monitored. The information gathered by “citizen scientists” can help land managers make more informed decisions about how best to care for public and private land. We have created the first citizen monitoring program that focuses on the ecological recovery of decommissioned roads. We developed monitoring protocols for citizen scientists, recruited and trained volunteers, and led monitoring trips in the field every weekend during the summer and fall of 2005, engaging, thus far, some 20 volunteers. As this project is still in progress, all conclusions and findings reported are preliminary. We can, however, make general observations on the efficacy and accuracy of employing citizen scientists to measure ecosystem recovery as a result of road decommissioning. In addition, a second year of funding has been obtained for this project. We anticipate that next year’s program will be a success in forwarding our objectives for this project.

Background: Physical Education (PE) programmes are expanding to include alternative activities yet what is missing is a conceptual model that facilitates how the learning process may be understood and assessed beyond the dominant sport-technique paradigm. Purpose: The purpose of this article was to feature the emergence of a Function-to-Flow (F2F) interdisciplinary curriculum support tool which facilitates the assessment of an alternative activity beyond baseline levels of participation. Participants and setting: Participants of this study include a sample of N = 153 students from grades one, five, seven, eight, and nine located within seven different schools in Ottawa (Canada), who booked the JungleSport™ climbing programme of their own accord. Within each school, a particular class was selected under the guidance of the school principal and in consultation with the Health and PE teacher. The Head Instructor of the JungleSport™ programme also participated in the study. During the second year of this study, three classes from three different intermediate schools, including two grade 7 classes (n = 19 and n = 26) and a grade 8 class (n = 23), piloted curriculum support tools that are featured in this article. Data collection: The main source of information upon which this article is based is the small group interviews with student participants that were conducted at the conclusion of the three- to five-day JungleSport™ programme. Secondary sources of information include journal entries from prepared booklets, student, teacher, and head instructor interviews, as well as observed interdisciplinary activities. Data analysis: The main question that guided this three-year study was: "What is it like to become physically educated in a way that invites an expanded movement consciousness, from the rudiments of movement function to the somatics of flow?" To explore this question, several student-friendly sub-questions were developed. Responses to these questions were compiled into a summative chart, the interdisciplinary F2F curriculum support tool, which depicts how a student may climb at different levels of proficiency. Findings: Assessing movement in relation to the "F2F model" has the potential to facilitate an appreciation and understanding of the many ways a student may become physically educated. This article features how students were able to articulate understandings of muscular "function", desired "form", kinaesthetic "feeling", as well as existential possibilities for experiencing "flow". It is postulated that a similar curriculum support tool could be designed for other activities, however alternative, as well as mainstream sport. Simply analysing movement experiences in terms of muscular "function", "form", "feeling", and "flow" as exemplified in this study has the potential to broaden narrowed conceptions of learning in the PE context. Thus the "physical education-as-sport- technique" paradigm which largely attends to isolated form has the potential to become the "function-form-feeling-flow" paradigm. Thus, in closely observing students climbing, as described in the first year of this project and co-reflecting on the percepts and concepts that emerge in relation to the F2F-inspired curriculum support tool as featured in this article, assessment and interdisciplinary understanding in PE has the potential to reach new heights.

Poor understanding of intracellular delivery and targeting hinders development of nucleic acid‐based therapeutics transported by nanoparticles. Utilizing a siRNA‐targeting and small molecule profiling approach with advanced imaging and machine learning biological insights is generated into the mechanism of lipid nanoparticle (MC3‐LNP) delivery of mRNA. This workflow is termed Advanced Cellular and Endocytic profiling for Intracellular Delivery (ACE‐ID). A cell‐based imaging assay and perturbation of 178 targets relevant to intracellular trafficking is used to identify corresponding effects on functional mRNA delivery. Targets improving delivery are analyzed by extracting data‐rich phenotypic fingerprints from images using advanced image analysis algorithms. Machine learning is used to determine key features correlating with enhanced delivery, identifying fluid‐phase endocytosis as a productive cellular entry route. With this new knowledge, MC3‐LNP is re‐engineered to target macropinocytosis, and this significantly improves mRNA delivery in vitro and in vivo. The ACE‐ID approach can be broadly applicable for optimizing nanomedicine‐based intracellular delivery systems and has the potential to accelerate the development of delivery systems for nucleic acid‐based therapeutics. A phenomenology of the bodily experience of interactive flow adds to Csikszentmihalyi's flow theory. Whereas Csikszentmihalyi attended to teachers' and students' experiences of flow separately, this inquiry explores flow through three water-inspired layers of physical interaction between fitness professionals and their clients. Teaching fitness is likened to the emotive experience of surfing the ocean peaks, swimming in the shallows, and diving deep beneath the surface. As a producer of high, immersed, and deep flow, this teaching moves actively from an elevated stage of one-sided instruction to motions of deep, other-directed absorption. Learning to teach in this flow-producing way is portrayed through first-person accounts of the intensification of closeness, connection, reciprocity, and mutuality between fitness professionals and their clients. This study, with its reference to the postures, positions, gestures, and expressions of fitness instruction, indicates a kinaesthetic register of flow consciousness that serves as a guide to effective exercise pedagogy. Purpose: To explore a conceptual shift from mechanism, the dominant 'body-as-machine' (Tinning, 2010) paradigm, to vitalism, the philosophical phenomenological tenets of physical literacy (Whitehead, 2010) upon which the curriculum of physical education in Canada is based, within the context of an alternative physical education program. Method: A motion-sensitive phenomenological approach (Lloyd & Smith, 2006b; 2015), conceptually framed by the Function2Flow (F2F) model, was conducted with a sample of N = 153 students from seven different schools in Ottawa (Canada) who booked the JungleSport climbing program of their own accord. Sources of information included phenomenological observations, small group interviews, and journal entries. Exemplars of two in depth student experiences are featured in this article. Results & Discussion: The phenomenological analysis of the climbing experiences, in addition to the F2F curriculum support tools that were developed, provide practical and philosophical pathways for understanding how we may broaden assessments of learning in physical education.
