High temperatures promote kinetic processes which can drive crystal synthesis towards ideal thermodynamic conditions, thereby realizing samples of superior quality. While accessing very high temperatures in thin-film epitaxy is becoming increasingly accessible through laser-based heating methods, demonstrations of such utility are still emerging. Here we realize a novel self-regulated growth mode in the Ti-O system by relying on thermally activated diffusion of oxygen from an oxide substrate. We demonstrate oxidation selectivity of single phase films with superior crystallinity to conventional approaches as evidenced by structural and electronic measurements. The diffusion-enabled mode is potentially of wide use in the growth of transition metal oxides, opening up new opportunities for ultra-high purity epitaxial platforms based on d -orbital systems., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

This work describes the language resources and models developed for automatic simplification of Spanish texts in three domains: Finance, Medicine and History studies. We created several corpora in each domain, annotation and simplification guidelines, a lexicon of technical and simplified medical terms, datasets used in shared tasks for the financial domain, and two simplification tools. As the interest in FPGA-based accelerators for HPC applications increases, new challenges also arise, especially concerning different programming and portability issues. This paper aims to provide a snapshot of the current state of the FPGA tooling and its problems. To do so, we evaluate the performance portability of two frameworks for developing FPGA solutions for HPC (SYCL and OpenCL) when using them to port a highly-parallel application to FPGAs, using both ND-range and single-task type of kernels. The developer's general recommendation when using FPGAs is to develop single-task kernels for them, as they are commonly regarded as more suited for such hardware. However, we discovered that, when using high-level approaches such as OpenCL and SYCL to program a highly-parallel application with no FPGA-tailored optimizations, ND-range kernels significantly outperform single-task codes. Specifically, while SYCL struggles to produce efficient FPGA implementations of applications described as single-task codes, its performance excels with ND-range kernels, a result that was unexpectedly favorable.

As Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) computing capabilities continue to grow, also does the interest on building scientific accelerators around them. Tools like Xilinx's High-Level Synthesis (HLS) help to bridge the gap between traditional high-level languages such as C and C++, and low-level hardware description languages such as VHDL and Verilog. In this report, we study the implementation of a fluid dynamics application, the Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) calculation, on FPGA using HLS. (Abridged) The abundance discrepancy problem in planetary nebulae (PNe) has long puzzled astronomers. NGC6153, with its high Abundance Discrepancy Factor (ADF~10), provides an opportunity to understand the chemical structure and ionisation processes by constructing detailed emission line maps and examining variations in electron temperature and density. We used the MUSE spectrograph to acquire IFU data covering the wavelength range 4600-9300 \AA\ with a spatial sampling of 0.2 arcsec and spectral resolutions ranging from R = 1600-3500. We created emission line maps for 60 lines and two continuum regions. We developed a tailored methodology for the analysis of the data, including correction for recombination contributions to auroral lines and the contributions of different plasma phases. Our analysis confirmed the presence of a low-temperature plasma component in NGC6153. We find that electron temperatures derived from recombination line and continuum diagnostics are significantly lower than those derived from collisionally excited line diagnostics. Ionic chemical abundance maps were constructed, considering the weight of the cold plasma phase in the HI emission. Adopting this approach, we found ionic abundances that could be up to 0.2 dex lower for those derived from CELs and up to 1.1 dex higher for those derived from RLs than in the case of an homogeneous HI emission. The abundance contrast factor (ACF) between both plasma components was defined, with values, on average, 0.9 dex higher than the ADF. Different methods for calculating ionisation correction factors (ICFs) yielded consistent results. In this paper, the starting point of our analysis is \ a coupled system of linear elasticity and Stokes equation. We consider two small parameters: the thickness $h$ of the thin plate and the pore scale $\varepsilon(h)$ which depends on $h$. We will focus specifically on the case when the pore size is comparatively small relative to the thickness of the plate. The main goal here is derive a model of a poroelastic plate, starting from the $3D$ problem as $h$ goes to zero, using simultaneous homogenization and dimension reduction techniques. The obtained model generalizes the poroelastic plate model derived by A. Mikeli\'c et. al. in 2015 using dimension reduction techniques from $3D$ Biot's equations in the sense that it also covers the case of contacts of poroelastic and (poro)elastic plate as well as the evolution equation with inertial term.

Rare-earth diantimondes exhibit coupling between structural and electronic orders which are tunable under pressure and temperature. Here we present the discovery of a new polymorph of LaSb$_2$ stabilized in thin films synthesized using molecular beam epitaxy. Using diffraction, electron microscopy, and first principles calculations we identify a YbSb$_2$-type monoclinic lattice as a yet-uncharacterized stacking configuration. The material hosts superconductivity with a $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 2 K, which is enhanced relative to the bulk ambient phase, and a long superconducting coherence length of 140 nm. This result highlights the potential thin film growth has in stabilizing novel stacking configurations in quasi-two dimensional compounds with competing layered structures.

Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) state in six quintuple layer Cr$_{0.1}$(Bi$_{0.2}$Sb$_{0.8}$)$_{1.9}$Te$_3$ thin films were studied through scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and electrical transport measurements. While the surface state is gapless above the Curie temperature ($T_\mathrm{C} \approx 30$ K), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) of the sample reveals a topologically non-trivial gap with an average value of $\approx 13.5$ meV at 4.2 K below the ferromagnetic transition. Nonetheless, areal STS scans of the magnetic topological insulator exhibit energy modulations on the order of several meV's in the surface bands which result in the valence band maximum in some regions becoming higher than the energy of the conduction band minimum of some other regions that are spatially separated by no more than 3 nm. First principle calculations demonstrate that the origin of the observed inhomogeneous energy band alignment is an outcome of many-body interactions, namely electron-defect interactions and electron-phonon interactions. Defects play the role of locally modifying the energy landscape of surface bands while electron-phonon interactions renormalize the surface bands such that the surface gap becomes reduced by more than 1 meV as temperature is raised from 0 to 4.2 K. These many-body interactions at a finite temperature result in substantial increase of electron tunneling across the spatially separated conduction band pockets even for finite temperatures well below $T_\mathrm{C}$ , thus driving the magnetic topological insulator out of its QAH insulating phase into a metallic phase at a relatively low temperature., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Nanoparticle (NP)-based applications are becoming increasingly important in the biomedical field. However, understanding the interactions of NPs with biofluids and cells is a major issue in order to develop novel approaches aimed at boosting their internalization and, therefore, their translation into the clinic. To this end, we put forward a transport mathematical model to describe the spatio-temporal dynamics of iron oxide NPs and their interaction with cells under moderate centrifugation. Our numerical simulations allowed us to quantify the relevance of the flux density as one of the unavoidable key features driving NPs interaction with the media as well as for cell internalization processes. These findings will help to increase the efficiency of cell labelling for biomedical applications., Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures. The main purpose of this work is the modelling of large single populations of cells under different interactions among themselves, in balance with natural random diffusion. We focus on cell-cell adhesion mechanisms for one single population confined in isolated domains. Our most relevant contribution is the proposal of a mathematical model, that includes a nonlocal saturation coefficient multiplying an appropriate nonlocal drift term, that can even induce repulsion effects from saturated areas.

Abundance determinations in planetary nebulae (PNe) are crucial for understanding stellar evolution and the chemical evolution of the host galaxy. We discuss the complications involved when the presence of a metal-rich phase is suspected in the nebula. Background: Asymmetric fission is known to occur in two regions, the actinides and sub-lead, and is dependent on the fissioning system excitation energy. Experimental evidence in the sub-lead region show that this mode is surprisingly persistent with increasing energy and its origin is not fully understood. Purpose: To experimentally study the fusion-fission reaction of $^{215}$Fr at moderate excitation energy and determine previously unknown independent fission yields and other properties. Method: The compound nucleus was formed in the reaction $^{18}$O + $^{197}$Au. The prompt gamma-rays emitted during the reaction were measured with the high efficiency and high granularity $\nu$-ball2 spectrometer. Independent fission yields of even-even nuclei were determined by detecting triple-gamma cascades in the fission fragments. Results: The observed yields, although dominated by a symmetric peak, show maxima for heavy fragment of $Z \approx 54-56$, which is consistent with the known results in the actinide region but unexpected for the nuclide of interest, and at the studied excitation energy. Conclusions: The mode of asymmetric fission is present even at relatively high excitation energies in the system studied. This observation matches experimental findings in the sub-lead region, contrary to the actinides, and so far there is no well-developed explanation of this phenomenon.

In this paper, starting from a non-convex and nonlocal $3D-$variational model for the electric polarization in a ferroelectric material, and using an asymptotic process based on dimensional reduction, we analyze junction phenomena for two vertical joined ferroelectric thin cilynders with differents small thicknesses. We obtain three variational models for thin wire joined to a thin film, depending on the limit of the ratio between these two thicknesses.

Computational platforms for high-performance scientific applications are becoming more heterogenous, including hardware accelerators such as multiple GPUs. Applications in a wide variety of scientific fields require an efficient and careful management of the computational resources of this type of hardware to obtain the best possible performance. However, there are currently different GPU vendors, architectures and families that can be found in heterogeneous clusters or machines. Programming with the vendor provided languages or frameworks, and optimizing for specific devices, may become cumbersome and compromise portability to other systems. To overcome this problem, several proposals for high-level heterogeneous programming have appeared, trying to reduce the development effort and increase functional and performance portability, specifically when using GPU hardware accelerators. This paper evaluates the SYCL programming model, using the Open SYCL compiler, from two different perspectives: The performance it offers when dealing with single or multiple GPU devices from the same or different vendors, and the development effort required to implement the code. We use as case of study the Finite Time Lyapunov Exponent calculation over two real-world scenarios and compare the performance and the development effort of its Open SYCL-based version against the equivalent versions that use CUDA or HIP. Based on the experimental results, we observe that the use of SYCL does not lead to a remarkable overhead in terms of the GPU kernels execution time. In general terms, the Open SYCL development effort for the host code is lower than that observed with CUDA or HIP. Moreover, the SYCL version can take advantage of both CUDA and AMD GPU devices simultaneously much easier than directly using the vendor-specific programming solutions.

Square net tellurides host an array of electronic ground states and commonly exhibit charge-density-wave ordering. Here we report the epitaxy of DyTe$_{2-\delta}$ on atomically flat MgO (001) using molecular beam epitaxy. The films are single phase and highly oriented as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. Epitaxial strain is evident in films and is relieved as the thickness increases up to a value of approximately 20 unit cells. Diffraction features associated with a supercell in the films are resolved which is coupled with Te-deficiency. First principles calculations attribute the formation of this defect lattice to nesting conditions in the Fermi surface, which produce a periodic occupancy of the conducting Te square-net, and opens a band gap at the chemical potential. This work establishes the groundwork for exploring the role of strain in tuning electronic and structural phases of epitaxial square-net tellurides and related compounds.
