The paper aimed to experimentally identify the effect of rotor blade geometry on particle size characteristics for the knife-milled wheat straw of 12.5 wt % moisture content. Biomass was systematically reduced in size using two-blade rotor geometries (linear and screw), varying the following conditions: rotor speeds of 10.2 - 20.4 m s - 1 and screen sieve sizes of 0.75 - 10 mm. It was identified that rotor blade geometry affected particle size. The higher the rotational rotor speed and the screen sieve size, the higher the difference in particle size characteristics. The original empiric model was derived and calibrated by studying the mutual relationships among process variables. The model allows predicting characteristic particle size D50 for individual rotor blade geometries, knowing rotor speed and screen sieve size. The accuracies of R² = 0.94 for linear- and R² = 0.92 for screw-blade rotor geometry were reached for particle size estimation using the derived model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ulva rigida seaweed is constituted by ulvan, which is a sulfated polysaccharide with uses in a wide variety of applications. After the ulvan-oriented extraction process, a crystalline and recalcitrant residue, the so-called pulp, appears. In this work, this residue was valorized through a multiple-stage process. The total processing of the algae consists of hot water extraction, acid hydrolysis, ABE fermentation, and distillation in order to obtain not only ulvan but also butanol and bioethanol to be used as biofuels by simulating two third-generation algae-based biorefineries in Aspen Plus v10 software. Third-generation plants do not compete with food and algae biomass, and they do not require delignification nor pretreatment steps, which are usually the bottleneck of second-generation plants. A plant producing butanol as biofuel together with diluted ulvan, acetone, and ethanol as byproducts was modelled in Aspen Plus software. Regarding the profitability of the investment, the plants producing bioethanol and butanol were economically feasible. The economic parameters for the bioethanol and butanol plants were as follows: NPV equal to 27.66 M$ and 16.67 M$, and IRR equal to 46% and 37%, respectively. The discounted return period was acceptable for these types of plants, which were 4.11 and 3.16 years for the ABE biorefinery and the bioethanol biorefinery, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents are widely used in biomass processing. In this work, four different green solvent mixtures were used as pre-treatment of acid sulphite dissolving pulp with the hypothesis of increasing the possibilities to produce viscose fibres and decreasing the use of the harmful and toxic carbon disulphide in the process. The experiments were performed at two different pulp to solvent mass ratios. Pulp quality parameters were also measured to determine the suitability of the pre-treatment: α-cellulose, viscosity, lignin and pentosan content. In addition, X-ray diffraction analysis of pulps at the best solid to liquid ratio was performed to obtain the influence of the crystallinity index. Best results were obtained with the use of lactic acid, with reactivity values close to 94%, giving a reduction of CS2 usage of 15.83%. Furthermore, a linear relationship between the crystallinity index calculated by the XRD and reactivity with a regression factor of 0.87 was found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physico-chemical and biological processes can be used to transform different pulp and paper industries through integrated forest biorefineries in order to valorise all of the main fractions of the lignocellulosic biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin). In this work, hydrolysis and fractionation processes have been studied in a sulphite pulp mill to obtain not only dissolving pulp from the cellulose but also lignosulphonates from the lignin and fermentation products from the hemicellulose. Delignification and hydrolysis experiments have been carried out at laboratory scale in order to increase the valorisation opportunities and trying to decrease the inhibitors in the final by-product. The European Union is planning a new program to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. In this context, the Icelandic government plans to ban new registrations of fossil fuel cars after 2030 as one of the strategies to make Iceland a carbon-neutral country by 2040. Upgraded biogas can be directly used in vehicles with CNG engines, reducing CO2 emissions by 80%. In this paper, several alternatives of biogas plants, simulated in previous research, were evaluated by considering techno-economic and environmental criteria through the application of multi-criteria decision-making tools. Twelve alternatives were analyzed using the Definite 3.1 software. A weighted summation algorithm, which transforms all criteria into the same scale by multiplying them by weights and then summing them to obtain the results, was used in the analysis. The multi-criteria analysis of the twelve proposed alternatives included eleven criteria (three technical, five economic, and three environmental) whose weights were changed in a total of eleven scenarios. From a global perspective, when all criteria were considered (9.1% weight) the best alternative with a score of 0.58 was the single-stage biogas plant working with municipal solid waste. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses also demonstrated that the multi-criteria results obtained were robust and reliable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
