In this paper, we have investigated a remote encoding/decoding method of micrometer-sized multibit magnetic tags and demonstrated the operation of magnetic digital tags to discuss the practical issues which arise. The tags are formed from micron scale patterned ferromagnetic Co thin films, which are engineered to have different switching fields by tailoring the geometric shape of the elements. This enables the tags to be encoded and read by a sequence of globally applied magnetic fields. Full-field magneto-optical microscopy was used to achieve the remote writing and reading for magnetic digital tags. Our results demonstrate that the elements in the multibit tags are well separated in switching field and can be encoded/decoded independently by using globally applied magnetic fields and magneto-optical microscopy. We will discuss practical issues for high-information multibit magnetic tags including switching field distribution and repeatability with implications for the field of bioassays. Compressively strained Ge quantum well devices have a spin-splitting in applied magnetic field that is entirely consistent with a Zeeman effect in the heavy hole valence band. The spin orientation is determined by the biaxial strain in the quantum well with the relaxed SiGe buffer layers and is quantized in the growth direction perpendicular to the conducting channel. The measured spin-splitting in the resistivity ρxx agrees with the predictions of the Zeeman Hamiltonian where the Shubnikov-deHaas effect exhibits a loss of even filling factor minima in the resistivity ρxx with hole depletion from a gate field, increasing disorder or increasing temperature. There is no measurable Rashba spin-orbit coupling irrespective of the structural inversion asymmetry of the confining potential in low p-doped or undoped Ge quantum wells from a density of 6 × 1010 cm-2 in depletion mode to 1.7 × 1011 cm-2 in enhancement. An integrated microfluidic cell (IMC), which incorporates magnetic sensors and sorting striplines for manipulation and detection of ferromagnetic beads of 9 [mu]m diameters, is designed, fabricated and tested. The viability of the cell design for detection and sorting of magnetic beads is demonstrated.

Micromagnetic simulations of magnetoresistance (MR) measurements are used for examining the low temperature magnetic switching behavior of micron scale NiFe/Cu/Co circular ring elements. The behavior of the ring in low temperature is explained as an increase in the strength of magnetocrystalline and magnetoelastic anisotropies combined with an absence of thermal excitation that has helped the nucleation and depinning of domain walls.

A digital magnetic tagging method is described that is based on magnetic microtags, which are anisotropy engineered to provide stable magnetization directions corresponding to digital codes. Free floating tags are fabricated for use in microfluidic systems and a magnetic lab-on-a-chip device is used for tagging biomolecular probes for applications in genome sequencing, immunoassays, clinical diagnostics, drug discovery and pathogen detection and screening.

A lab-on-a-chip integrated microfluidic cell has been developed for magnetic biosensing, which is comprised of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensors optimized for the detection of single magnetic beads and electrodes to manipulate and sort the beads, integrated into a microfluidic channel. The device is designed to read out the real-time signal from 9 μm diameter magnetic beads moving over AMR sensors patterned into 18×4.5 μm rectangles and 10 μm diameter rings and arranged in Wheatstone bridges. The beads are moved over the sensors along a 75×75 μm wide channel patterned in SU8. Beads of different magnetic moments can be sorted through a magnetostatic sorting gate into different branches of the microfluidic channel using a magnetic field gradient applied by lithographically defined 120 nm thick Cu striplines carrying 0.2 A current. Block copolymers are recognized as a valuable platform for creating nanostructured materials. Morphologies formed by block copolymer self-assembly can be transferred into a wide range of inorganic materials, enabling applications including energy storage and metamaterials. However, imaging of the underlying, often complex, nanostructures in large volumes has remained a challenge, limiting progress in materials development. Taking advantage of recent advances in X-ray nanotomography, we noninvasively imaged exceptionally large volumes of nanostructured hybrid materials at high resolution, revealing a single-diamond morphology in a triblock terpolymer-gold composite network. This morphology, which is ubiquitous in nature, has so far remained elusive in block copolymer-derived materials, despite its potential to create materials with large photonic bandgaps. The discovery was made possible by the precise analysis of distortions in a large volume of the self-assembled diamond network, which are difficult to unambiguously assess using traditional characterization tools. We anticipate that high-resolution X-ray nanotomography, which allows imaging of much larger sample volumes than electron-based tomography, will become a powerful tool for the quantitative analysis of complex nanostructures and that structures such as the triblock terpolymer-directed single diamond will enable the generation of advanced multicomponent composites with hitherto unknown property profiles.

Expanding upon the burgeoning discipline of magnonics, this research elucidates the intricate dynamics of spin waves (SWs) within three-dimensional nanoenvironments. It marks a shift from traditionally used planar systems to exploration of magnetization configurations and the resulting dynamics within 3D nanostructures. This study deploys micromagnetic simulations alongside ferromagnetic resonance measurements to scrutinize magnetic gyroids, periodic chiral configurations composed of chiral triple junctions with a period in nanoscale. Our findings uncover distinctive attributes intrinsic to the gyroid network, most notably the localization of collective SW excitations and the sensitivity of the gyroid's ferromagnetic response to the orientation of the static magnetic field, a correlation closely tied to the crystallographic alignment of the structure. Furthermore, we show that for the ferromagnetic resonance, multidomain gyroid films can be treated as a magnonic material with effective magnetization scaled by its filling factor. The implications of our research carry the potential for practical uses such as an effective, metamaterial-like substitute for ferromagnetic parts and lay the groundwork for radio frequency filters. The growing areas of 3D magnonics and spintronics present exciting opportunities to investigate and utilize gyroid nanostructures for signal processing purposes.

Block copolymers (BCPs) are particularly effective in creating soft nanostructured templates for transferring complex 3D network structures into inorganic materials that are difficult to fabricate by other methods. However, achieving control of the local ordering within these 3D networks over large areas remains a significant obstacle to advancing material properties. Here, we address this challenge by directing the self-assembly of a 3D alternating diamond morphology by solvent vapor annealing of a triblock terpolymer film on a chemically patterned substrate. The hexagonal substrate patterns were designed to match a (111) plane of the diamond lattice. Commensurability between the sparse substrate pattern and the BCP lattice produced a uniformly ordered diamond network within the polymer film, as confirmed by a combination of atomic force microscopy and cross-sectional imaging using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy. The successful replication of the complex and well-ordered 3D network structure in gold promises to advance optical metamaterials and has potential applications in nanophotonics.

In this paper, we determine the magnetic moment induced in graphene when grown on a cobalt film using polarised neutron reflectivity (PNR). A magnetic signal in the graphene was detected by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra at the C K -edge. From the XMCD sum rules an estimated magnetic moment of 0.3 μ B /C atom, while a more accurate estimation of 0.49 μ B /C atom was obtained by carrying out a PNR measurement at 300 K. The results indicate that the higher magnetic moment in Co is counterbalanced by the larger lattice mismatch between the Co-C (1.6%) and the slightly longer bond length, inducing a magnetic moment in graphene that is similar to that reported in Ni/graphene heterostructures.

We report the magnitude of the induced magnetic moment in CVD-grown epitaxial and rotated-domain graphene in proximity with a ferromagnetic Ni film, using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The XMCD spectra at the C K -edge confirm the presence of a magnetic signal in the graphene layer, and the sum rules give a magnetic moment of up to ∼0.47 μ B /C atom induced in the graphene layer. For a more precise estimation, we conducted PNR measurements. The PNR results indicate an induced magnetic moment of ∼0.41 μ B /C atom at 10 K for epitaxial and rotated-domain graphene. Additional PNR measurements on graphene grown on a nonmagnetic Ni 9 Mo 1 substrate, where no magnetic moment in graphene is measured, suggest that the origin of the induced magnetic moment is due to the opening of the graphene's Dirac cone as a result of the strong C p z -Ni 3d hybridization.

Arrays of interacting 2D nanomagnets display unprecedented electromagnetic properties via collective effects, demonstrated in artificial spin ices and magnonic crystals. Progress toward 3D magnetic metamaterials is hampered by two challenges: fabricating 3D structures near intrinsic magnetic length scales (sub-100 nm) and visualizing their magnetic configurations. Here, we fabricate and measure nanoscale magnetic gyroids, periodic chiral networks comprising nanowire-like struts forming three-connected vertices. Via block copolymer templating, we produce Ni 75 Fe 25 single-gyroid and double-gyroid (an inversion pair of single-gyroids) nanostructures with a 42 nm unit cell and 11 nm diameter struts, comparable to the exchange length in Ni-Fe. We visualize their magnetization distributions via off-axis electron holography with nanometer spatial resolution and interpret the patterns using finite-element micromagnetic simulations. Our results suggest an intricate, frustrated remanent state which is ferromagnetic but without a unique equilibrium configuration, opening new possibilities for collective phenomena in magnetism, including 3D magnonic crystals and unconventional computing.

Ferromagnetic ordering in a topological insulator can break time-reversal symmetry, realizing dissipationless electronic states in the absence of a magnetic field. The control of the magnetic state is of great importance for future device applications. We provide a detailed systematic study of the magnetic state in highly doped Cr x Sb 2-x Te 3 thin films using electrical transport, magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements and terahertz time domain spectroscopy, and also report an efficient electric gating of ferromagnetic order using the electrolyte ionic liquid [DEME][TFSI]. Upon increasing the Cr concentration from x = 0.15 to 0.76, the Curie temperature (T c ) was observed to increase by ~5 times to 176 K. In addition, it was possible to modify the magnetic moment by up to 50% with a gate bias variation of just ±3 V, which corresponds to an increase in carrier density by 50%. Further analysis on a sample with x = 0.76 exhibits a clear insulator-metal transition at T c , indicating the consistency between the electrical and optical measurements. The direct correlation obtained between the carrier density and ferromagnetism - in both electrostatic and chemical doping - using optical and electrical means strongly suggests a carrier-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) coupling scenario. Our low-voltage means of manipulating ferromagnetism, and consistency in optical and electrical measurements provides a way to realize exotic quantum states for spintronic and low energy magneto-electronic device applications.

We present a novel tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) scanning microscope set-up capable of quantitatively imaging the magnetic stray field patterns of micron-sized elements in 3D. By incorporating an Anderson loop measurement circuit for impedance matching, we are able to detect magnetoresistance changes of as little as 0.006%/Oe. By 3D rastering a mounted TMR sensor over our magnetic barcodes, we are able to characterize the complex domain structures by displaying the real component, the amplitude and the phase of the sensor's impedance. The modular design, incorporating a TMR sensor with an optical microscope, renders this set-up a versatile platform for studying and imaging immobilised magnetic carriers and barcodes currently employed in biosensor platforms, magnetotactic bacteria and other complex magnetic domain structures of micron-sized entities. The quantitative nature of the instrument and its ability to produce vector maps of magnetic stray fields has the potential to provide significant advantages over other commonly used scanning magnetometry techniques.

The magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum sp. has been cultured and the properties of its endogenous magnetic nanoparticles characterized. Electron-microscopic analyses indicate that the endogenous magnetite nanoparticles in Magnetospirillum sp. are coated with a 3-4 nm thick transparent shell, forming a magnetosome. These magnetite nanoparticles had diameters of 50.9+/-13.3 nm, in good agreement with the diameter of 40.6+/-1.2 nm extracted from magnetometry. Each Magnetospirillum sp. bacterium contained chains of 5-25 magnetosomes. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry results indicate that the extrinsic superparamagnetic response of the bacterial solution at room temperature can be attributed to the reversal of the magnetization by physical rotation of the nanoparticles. The intrinsic blocking temperature of a sample of freeze-dried bacteria was estimated to be 282+/-13 K. A tunnelling magneto resistance sensor was used to detect the stray fields of endogenous magnetic nanoparticles in static and quasi-dynamic modes. Based on the tunnelling magneto resistance sensor results, the magnetic moment per bacterium was estimated to be approximately 2.6 x 10(-13) emu. The feasibility of this detection method either as a mass-coverage device or as part of an integrated microfluidic circuit for detection and sorting of magnetosome-containing cells was demonstrated.
