This article documents the visual introduction of glamour to American popular culture through the development of “glamour photography.” As the result of artistic, institutional, and technological conditions that converged from the mid-1920s through the early 1930s, this new mode of publicity photography materialized, dramatically shifting the way film stars were imaged and the channels through which their images were disseminated. This aesthetic and institutional shift connected the somewhat ambiguous idea of glamour and the evolving technologies of publicity photography perfected by Edward Steichen and his peers in the late 1920s. Inspired Hollywood studio photographers, such as George Hurrell, established a “semiotics of glamour” by endlessly reproducing a set of visual signs, consisting of technical qualities (such as lighting, retouching, and focus) coupled with an increasingly sexualized, gender-specific appearance of subjects (including poses, costumes, hair, and makeup). This paper examines the drivers for change behind the development of ‘experience-led degrees’ that aim to equip students with the employability skills needed by industry. The term ‘experience-led engineering degree’ is derived from the Sainsbury Review and is taken to mean components of an engineering degree that develop industry related skills and which may also include industry interaction.It presents the relevant findings from a study of how engineering degrees meet the needs of industry (Engineering graduates for industry) which used a case study approach to address the research question: “how can we enhance a sustainable world-class higher education engineering sector that meets the graduate recruitment needs of industry?” Six case studies were developed describing examples of experience-led components in engineering departments across England.A number of key messages emerged from the analysis of the case studies. This paper gives a synopsis of an extensive programme of case studies on real uses of computer-assisted learning (CAL) materials within UK engineering degree programmes. The programme was conducted between 2000 and 2003 and followed a questionnaire-based survey looking at CAL use in the UK and in Australia. The synopsis reveals a number of key messages for academic tutors and authors including students' enthusiasm for notes, self-tests and features to aid visualisation. Publishers should also consider pricing and licensing arrangements suited to the individual user. In answer to the recurring question “Why women‐only training?”, reports on an extensive survey of women’s views, both pre‐ and post‐ the authors’ participation in women‐only development. The results give quantifiable evidence of the value of women‐only development training courses, with benefits in addition to enhanced learning and with a noticeable shift in opinions following the experience of participation. Supports the presence of women‐only development training as part of a menu of choice and will help to encourage organizations which are considering this type of training.

This paper reports on a project funded by the Higher Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre in the UK. The project started in January 2011. The project formed part of wider research into how successfully SE (Systems Engineering) can be taught at undergraduate levels. The project reported here considered the ability of undergraduate SE students to identify and record SE competencies, building on recent work completed by INCOSE. It investigated how SE competencies may be enhanced or developed throughout an undergraduate course and industrial placement, and further whether undergraduate students recognize and record such development. This paper presents the findings of the project and proposes a simple mechanism to identify and map SE competencies throughout an undergraduate course.
