Abstract Background and purpose The combined assessment of the neutrophil-platelet score and prognostic nutritional index is yet to be applied in evaluating the prognosis of patients following an operation for esophageal cancer. This study aimed to identify independent prognostic factors for patients undergoing operation for esophageal cancer and to construct a nomogram model for predicting median overall survival (mOS). Methods A cohort of 660 patients with esophageal cancer from two clinical centers in China was recruited, comprising a training cohort (n = 511) and a validation cohort (n = 149). Survival rates were compared using Kaplan–Meier curves and the log-rank test. The Cox regression model was used to identify independent prognostic factors. Abstract While hydrogel-based flexible sensors find extensive applications in fields such as medicine and robotics, their performance can be hindered by the rapid evaporation of water, leading to diminished sensitivity and mechanical durability. Despite the exploration of some effective solutions, such as introducing organic solvents, electrolytes, and elastomer composites, these approaches still suffer from problems including diminished conductivity, interface misalignment, and insufficient protection under dynamic conditions. Inspired by cell membrane structures, we developed an adaptive lipid-integrated bilayer coating (ALIBC) to enhance water retention in hydrogel-based sensors. Lipid layers and long-chain amphiphilic molecules are used as compact coating and anchoring agents on the hydrogel surface, mimicking the roles of lipids and membrane proteins in cell membranes, while spare lipids from aggregates within hydrogels can migrate to the surface to combat dehydration under deformation. This lipid-integrated bilayer coating prevents the water evaporation of hydrogels at both static and dynamic states without affecting the inherent flexibility, conductivity, and no cytotoxicity. Hydrogel-based sensors with ALIBC exhibited significantly enhanced performance in conditions of body temperature, extensive deformation, and long-term dynamic sensing. This work presents a general approach for precisely controlling the water-retaining capacity of hydrogels and hydrogel-based sensors without compromising their intrinsic physical properties.

As a promising material for marine engineering, the insufficient corrosion resistance of manganese aluminium bronze (MAB) alloy when exposed to the marine environment may limit its application. In the present work, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) of MAB alloy was conducted in an aluminate-based electrolyte with the influence of ultrasonic vibration (UV) examined. A porous ceramic film has been successfully produced on MAB via MAO, which exhibits dramatic increases in both film thickness and compactness after the introduction of UV. As a result, the ceramic film produced by ultrasound-assisted MAO (UMAO) exhibits an enhanced corrosion resistance relative to that via MAO, which also possesses a desired antifouling capability. Hence, the present work illustrates the influence of UV on the MAO behaviour of non-valve alloys and, more importantly, provides theoretical guidance for related surface modification strategies in marine engineering.

Abstract Background Chickens play a crucial role as the primary global source of eggs and poultry, and the quality of rooster semen significantly impacts poultry reproductive efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative to comprehend the regulatory mechanisms underlying sperm development. Results In this study, we established transcriptome profiles of lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs in 3 testis tissues and 3 epididymis tissues from “Jing Hong No.1” roosters at 24, 35, and 64 weeks of age. Using the data, we conducted whole transcriptome analysis and constructed a ceRNA network. We detected 10 differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs), 33 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), and 10 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) in the testis, as well as 149 DEmRNAs, 12 DElncRNAs, and 10 DEmiRNAs in the epididymis. These genes were found to be involved in cell differentiation and development, as well as various signaling pathways such as GnRH, MAPK, TGF-β, mTOR, VEGF, and calcium ion pathways. Subsequently, we constructed two competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks comprising DEmRNAs, DElncRNAs, and DEmiRNAs. Furthermore, we identified four crucial lncRNA-mRNA-miRNA interactions that govern specific biological processes in the chicken reproductive system: MSTRG.2423.1-gga-miR-1563-PPP3CA and MSTRG.10064.2-gga-miR-32-5p-GPR12 regulating sperm motility in the testis; MSTRG.152556.1-gga-miR-9-3p-GREM1/THYN1 governing immunomodulation in the epididymis; and MSTRG.124708.1-gga-miR-375-NDUFB9/YBX1 controlling epididymal sperm maturation and motility. Conclusions Whole transcriptome sequencing of chicken testis and epididymis screened several key genes and ceRNA regulatory networks, which may be involved in the regulation of epididymal immunity, spermatogenesis and sperm viability through the pathways of MAPK, TGF-β, mTOR, and calcium ion. These findings contribute to our comprehensive understanding of the intricate molecular processes underlying rooster spermatogenesis, maturation and motility.

Abstract The study of hydrogen concentration distribution law of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline is directly related to the safety and stability of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline network. Based on the theory of fluid dynamics, this paper established a model of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline and simulated the operation and shutdown status of hydrogen-doped methane pipeline by adopting the computational fluid dynamics method and selecting the mixture multiphase model and standard k - ε turbulence model. This paper investigates the hydrogen concentration distribution law in hydrogen-doped methane pipelines as well as the influence law of different hydrogen-doping ratios, operating flow velocities, operating pressures, shutdown time and gas usage on the hydrogen concentration distribution in gas pipeline. The results show that: under the operation condition, there is a weak uneven distribution of hydrogen in the pipeline, the hydrogen-doping ratio, flow velocity, pressure on the hydrogen volume fraction of the change in the 0.9% or less, the effect can be ignored; in the shutdown status, there is a clear stratification phenomenon, the hydrogen-doping ratio increased from 10 to 25%, the change in the volume fraction of hydrogen in the 11.2% or less, a positive correlation; with the extension of the shutdown time to 900s, the pipeline firstly appeared obvious stratification phenomenon in the branch pipe, the thickness of the gas with hydrogen volume fraction above 40% on the upper wall surface of the branch pipe increased to 0.7 mm, and after the shutdown time was extended to 10 h, obvious stratification phenomenon appeared in the main pipeline, and the volume fraction of hydrogen near the top of the main pipe of about 16.5 mm was above 30%, which was positively correlated; In the shutdown status, the shutdown time has the greatest effect on the stratification phenomenon in the pipe, followed by the hydrogen-doping ratio, and the gas usage has the least effect.

Coprinellus disseminatus and other morphologically similar species are widely dispersed worldwide and are commonly referred to as “fairy inkcap”. Based on the molecular phylogenetic study and morphological observation, a thorough investigation was carried out utilising 74 collections of related species that were gathered from seventeen provinces and five Chinese fungaria between 1998 and 2023 and revealed 11 lineages of “fairy inkcap”, nine of which were found in China, and which belonged to the two genera Coprinellus and Tulosesus. In sect. Disseminati, genetic diversities (π), and fixation index (Fst) amongst lineages were computed, and a haplotype-based network was established to ascertain the relationships amongst each clade. A new section of Coprinellus, sect. Aureodisseminati, were discovered. In addition, four new species (C. aureodisseminatus, C. austrodisseminatus, C. parcus, and C. velutipes), a new subspecies of C. disseminatus, a new combination (Tulosesus pseudodisseminatus), the first discovery of epigamous type of C. magnoliae and a new record to China (T. subdisseminatus) were also identified and thoroughly described with accompanying illustrations. Their differences in macro- and micro-features, as well as their character sequence, were discussed.

Coprophilous species of Coprinopsis sect. Niveae, commonly known as “snow inkcap”, are widespread in pastoral areas; however, wide sampling approaches are needed to discover new taxa and to clarify the taxonomic status of the so-called “snow inkcap”. Nationwide field work was conducted in China with a detailed record collected of the distribution and the animal origin of the dung. A four-loci phylogenetic study of Coprinopsis sect. Niveae was conducted based on the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS), the ribosomal large subunit (LSU), and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1-α)], and the mitochondria small ribosomal RNA subunit (mtSSU). Fourteen phylogenetic species were assigned to this section, including six novel species, namely Coprinopsis furfuracea, C. iliensis, C. khorqinensis, C. sericivia, C. subigarashii, and C. tenuipes. Macro-, micro-, and ultramicro-morphological observations of species collected from China were also conducted and the detailed descriptions and illustrations of the novel species are provided. Our studies revealed that the different origin of herbivore dung, the distribution, the color and thickness of the pileus, the shape of stipes, the shape and size of basidiospores, and the presence or absence of pleurocystidia can be used as characteristics for distinguishing species in sect. Niveae. The key to species belonging to this section is also provided.

Abstract In patients with kidney disease, the presence of monoclonal gammopathy necessitates the exploration of potential causal relationships. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to address this concern by developing a nomogram model for the early diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance (MGRS). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify risk factors for MGRS. Verification and evaluation of the nomogram model's differentiation, calibration, and clinical value were conducted using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis. The study encompassed 347 patients who underwent kidney biopsy, among whom 116 patients (33.4%) were diagnosed with MGRS and 231 (66.6%) with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. Monoclonal Ig-related amyloidosis (n = 86) and membranous nephropathy (n = 86) was the most common renal pathological type in each group. Notably, older age, abnormal serum-free light chain ratio, and the absence of microscopic hematuria were identified as independent prognostic factors for MGRS. The areas under the ROC curves for the training and verification sets were 0.848 and 0.880, respectively. In conclusion, the nomogram model demonstrated high accuracy and clinical applicability for diagnosing MGRS, potentially serving as a valuable tool for noninvasive early MGRS diagnosis.

Abstract This study analyzed the impact of factors affecting overall survival in patients with pT2N0M0 esophageal squamous carcinoma (ESCC) and developed a nomogram to predict overall survival (OS). We reviewed the clinical data of 413 patients with pathological T2N0M0 ESCC after radical esophagectomy in two hospitals. Data from one institution was used as the training cohort. A nomogram was established using Cox proportional hazard regression for identifying the prognostic factors affecting for OS in ESCC patients. The area under the curve (AUC), calibration curves and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate prognostic efficacy, which was validated in an independent validation cohort. In the training cohort (N = 304), the median OS was 69.33 months, and the 3-, 5- and 10-year OS rates were 76.80%, 67.00% and 56.90%, respectively. The median OS of the validation cohort (N = 109) was 73.50 months, and the 3-, 5- and 10-year OS rates were 77.00%, 67.80% and 55.60%, respectively. According to Cox univariate and multivariate analyses, sex, age, tumor length and the number of resected lymph nodes were identified as predictors of OS. We developed nomograms and performed internal and external validation. The time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) value, calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) showed good prediction ability of the nomogram. The developed nomogram can effectively predict OS after esophagectomy in patients with pT2N0M0 ESCC.

Monotropein, a principal natural compound in iridoid glycosides extracted from Morindae officinalis radix, has potent pharmacological activities. To understand and utilize monotropein, we systematically summarized the studies on monotropein, including its biosynthetic pathway, physicochemical properties, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacology. Interestingly, we found that the multiple bioactivities of monotropein, such as anti-osteoporosis, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-nociception, and hepatic or renal protection, are closely associated with its capability of downregulating the nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway, inhibiting the mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway, attenuating the activation of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 signaling pathway, and regulating the mammalian target of rapamycin/autophagy signaling pathway. However, the clinically therapeutic effects and the potential problems need to be addressed. This review highlights the current research progress on monotropein, which provides a reference for further investigation of monotropein.

The polarization of macrophages plays a critical role in the physiological and pathological progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Activated M1 macrophages overexpress folate receptors in arthritic joints. Hence, we developed folic acid (FA)-modified liposomes (FA-Lips) to encapsulate triptolide (TP) (FA-Lips/TP) for the targeted therapy of RA. FA-Lips exhibited significantly higher internalization efficiency in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells than liposomes (Lips) in the absence of folate. Next, an adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rat model was established to explore the biodistribution profiles of FA-Lips which showed markedly selective accumulation in inflammatory paws. Moreover, FA-Lips/TP exhibited greatly improved therapeutic efficacy and low toxicity in AIA rats by targeting M1 macrophages and repolarizing macrophages from M1 to M2 subtypes. Overall, a safe FA-modified liposomal delivery system encapsulating TP was shown to achieve inflammation-targeted therapy against RA via macrophage repolarization.

To improve the dynamic response of the inverter, the conventional proportional–integral controller and the modulation part are substituted by the finite-control step model predictive control (FCS-MPC) strategy. Compared to the two-level inverter, the drifted neutral point potential is an issue that cannot be neglected. To resolve this issue, the cost function is modified in this paper. Besides, as all of the voltage vectors are employed during optimal research progress in FCS-MPC, the switching frequency is variable, which burdens the filter. The complex calculation progress also burdens the microcontroller. According to the conventional modulation algorithm, the voltage vectors are divided into several groups and the optimal calculations are simplified with them. Based on that modification, the switching frequency is fixed. Finally, the simulation and the experimental results are demonstrated, which reveal the validity and merits of the proposed method.

The reasonable allocation of the battery energy storage system (BESS) in the distribution networks is an effective method that contributes to the renewable energy sources (RESs) connected to the power grid. However, the site and capacity of BESS optimized by the traditional genetic algorithm is usually inaccurate. In this paper, a power grid node load, which includes the daily load of wind power and solar energy, was studied. Aiming to minimize the average daily distribution networks loss with the power grid node load connected with RESs, a site selection and capacity setting model of BESS was built. To solve this model, a modified simulated annealing genetic algorithm was developed. In the developed method, the crossover probability and the mutation probability were modified by a double-threshold mutation probability control, which helped this genetic method to avoid trapping in local optima. Moreover, the cooling mechanism of simulated annealing method was presented to accelerate the convergence speed of the improved genetic algorithm. The simulation results showed that the convergence speed using the developed method can be accelerated in different number BESSs and the convergence time was shortened into 35 iteration times in view of networks loss, which reduced the convergence time by about 30 percent. Finally, the required number of battery system in BESS was further built according to the real batteries grouping design and the required capacity of BESS attained using the developed method.

Carbon source starvation can promote steel corrosion in the presence of a pure culture through extracellular electron transfer (EET). However, the impact of carbon source starvation on corrosion induced by mixed strains is still unknown. This work investigated the impact of carbon source starvation on EH40 steel corrosion in the presence of Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, typical species of sulfate- and nitrate-reducing bacteria. It was found that the impact of carbon source starvation on corrosion depended on nitrate addition. When nitrate (5 g∙L−1 NaNO3) was not added, the corrosion was promoted by carbon source starvation. However, the corrosion was initially promoted by carbon source starvation, but later inhibited with nitrate addition. The corrosion behaviors in different systems were closely related to different numbers of the strains in biofilms and their metabolic activities, and the mechanisms were revealed.

Abstract Growing evidence has suggested that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an essential role in the progression of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). LncRNA LINC00311 was found to be able to regulate many cellular process in several diseases. However, the function and regulatory mechanism of LINC00311 remains unclear in PTC. In the present study, the results showed that the expression of LINC00311 was upregulated in PTC tissues and cells. Furthermore, knockdown of LINC00311 dramatically suppressed spheroid formation, proliferation, migration, and invasion in PTC cells in vitro. Mechanistic investigations revealed that LINC00311 was negatively correlated with the expression of miR‐330‐5p, meanwhile, TLR4 was a direct target of miR‐330‐5p. In addition, rescue assays further determined that LINC00311 contributed to the progression of PTC through regulating TLR4 expression. Taken together, these findings indicated that LINC00311 could promote cancer stem‐like properties by targeting miR‐330‐5p/TLR4 pathway in PTC.

BackgroundThe lower neck and upper mediastinum are the major regions for postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) in thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (TESCC). However, there is no uniform standard regarding the delineation of nodal clinical target volume (CTVnd). This study aimed to map the recurrent lymph nodes in the cervical and upper mediastinal regions and explore a reasonable CTVnd for PORT in TESCC.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed patients in our hospital with first cervical and/or upper mediastinal lymph node recurrence (LNR) after upfront esophagectomy. All of these recurrent lymph nodes were plotted on template computed tomography (CT) images with reference to surrounding structures. The recurrence frequency at different stations was investigated and the anatomic distribution of recurrent lymph nodes was analyzed.ResultsA total of 119 patients with 215 recurrent lymph nodes were identified. There were 47 (39.5%) patients with cervical LNR and 102 (85.7%) patients with upper mediastinal LNR. The high-risk regions were station 101L/R, station 104L/R, station 106recL/R, station 105 and station 106pre for upper TESCC and station 104L/R, station 106recL/R, station 105, station 106pre and station 106tbL for middle and lower TESCCs. LNR in the external group of station 104L/R was not common, and LNR was not found in the narrow spaces where the trachea was in close contact with the innominate artery, aortic arch and mediastinal pleura. LNR below the level of the cephalic margin of the superior vena cava was also not common for upper TESCC.ConclusionsThe CTVnd of PORT in the cervical and upper mediastinal regions should cover station 101L/R, station 104L/R, station 106recL/R, station 105 and station 106pre for upper TESCC and station 104L/R, station 106recL/R, station 105, station 106pre and station 106tbL for middle and lower TESCCs. Based on our results, we proposed a useful atlas for guiding the delineation of CTVnd in TESCC.

Abstract Background This study evaluated the impact of adjuvant therapies on patient survival and disease recurrence patterns to identify an effective adjuvant therapy for resected lower thoracic oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LTESCC). Methods Clinical data of 127 patients with stage IIa-IVa LTESCC with a minimum 2-year follow-up after oesophagectomy were analysed. The survival and recurrence patterns were compared among patients who received adjuvant radiotherapy, adjuvant chemotherapy, adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, or surgery alone. Results Eighty-eight patients (69.3%) were identified as having disease recurrence. The regional lymph node recurrence rate was 57.5%, and the recurrence rates were high in the lower neck, upper mediastinum, and upper abdomen. Abstract The association between air pollution and childhood respiratory disease is inconsistent. In the present study, we investigated a short-term effect of ambient air pollutants and daily childhood lower respiratory diseases (CLRD). Daily air pollutants, weather data, and CLRD data were collected from January 2014 to April 2015 (452 days) in Nanjing, China. Time-series regression and generalized additive models were used to assess the effects of air pollutants (PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, O3, and CO) on CLRD. We observed that an interquartile range (IQR) increase in concentrations of PM10, NO2, and SO2 significantly increased the daily CLRD with 6 days cumulative effects (difference of estimates: 2.8%, 95% CI: 0.6–5.0%; 4.1%, 1.2–7.0%; 5.6%, 2.6–8.6%, respectively). However, no significant association was found in IQR concentrations of PM2.5, O3, and CO. Specifically, elevated PM10, PM2.5, NO2, and SO2 significantly increased the numbers of CLRD in cool season (3.6%, 1.5–5.7%; 2.4%, 0.3–4.5%; 4.9%, 2.9–7.0%; 6.3%, 3.7–9.0%, respectively). Additionally, the effect estimates of PM10, NO2, and SO2 in female and age >27 months were more pronounced than in male and age ≤27 months. This study suggested that short-term exposure to ambient PM10, NO2, and SO2 were associated with the increased CLRD numbers.

Abstract Conductance method was employed to study the physics of traps (e.g., interface and bulk traps) in the Al2O3/GaN MOS devices. By featuring only one single peak in the parallel conductance (G p/ω) characteristics in the deep depletion region, one single-level bulk trap (E C-0.53 eV) uniformly distributed in GaN buffer was identified. While in the subthreshold region, the interface traps with continuous energy of E C-0.4~0.57 eV and density of 0.6~1.6 × 1012 cm−2 were extracted from the commonly observed multiple G p/ω peaks. This methodology can be used to investigate the traps in GaN buffer and facilitates making the distinction between bulk and interface traps.

Independent microgrids are widely used in islands and remote townships. However, power imbalance often leads to fluctuations in voltage and frequency, which inhibit the development of AC microgrids. To overcome such problems, this paper proposes an optimized full-bridge converter energy storage structure to realize power balance and optimization of the microgrid. The proposed structure has the characteristics of simple design, easy modularization, and flexible power regulation. First, the working structure and mathematical model are analyzed, and the power model is then established. From the viewpoint of capacitor charging and discharging and inverter, the active and reactive power control technology of the full-bridge structure is analyzed, and a multimode power coordinated control strategy is adopted to adjust and optimize the target power. Finally, the feasibility of the structure and control strategy is verified through a simulation and an experiment. In summary, this study is of great significance to the future promotion and application of AC microgrids.

A novel automatic ship target detection and segmentation approach based on modified multi-fractal method in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is proposed in this study. Firstly, singular power spectrum (SPS) is developed to two-dimensional SPS (2D-SPS), and applied to feature extraction and SAR target detection. Secondly, 2D Holder exponent and 2D multi-fractal spectrum are jointly used to ship target segmentation in SAR image. The algorithm steps and detection flow is here conceptually assessed, analytically derived, numerically verified, and also tested on actual SAR images. Results indicate that the proposed method has significant advantages in ship target detection and segmentation in SAR image.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pelvic bone dose-volume parameters on bone marrow suppression during radiation therapy (RT) in patients with rectal cancer stage I to III disease receiving either neoadjuvant radiation therapy (neo-RT) or curative-intent radiation therapy (cur-RT). Methods and Materials: This was a retrospective study with data mined from an electronic medical record review at a single institution. Between January 2016 and September 2022, patients with rectal cancer who consecutively received neo-RT or cur-RT in our department were included. The data collected included complete baseline peripheral blood counts and hematologic toxicity (HT) data collected during RT. The radiation dose-volume parameters of 3 pelvic bone marrow subsites (iliac bone marrow [IBM], lumbosacral bone marrow, and lower pelvis bone marrow) were collected. The primary endpoint was grade ≥ 2 HT (HT2+), including leukopenia, neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and total HTs. Logistic regression was employed to analyze the associations of HT2+ with dosimetric parameters and clinicopathologic characteristics. Receiver operating characteristic curves and the area under the curve (AUC) were generated to verify the prediction efficacy of the pelvic bone dose-volume parameters combined with clinicopathologic indices. Results: A total of 130 patients with stage I to III rectal cancer with complete clinical data were included. During neo-RT and cur-RT, 57 (43.8%) of these patients experienced HT2+. Multivariate analysis revealed that gender, the IBM-Dmean, the IBM-V15, and the IBM-V40 were significantly associated with grade 2+ leukopenia (P < .05), and the AUC of gender combined with the IBM-Dmean, the IBM-V15, and the IBM-V40 in predicting grade 2+ leukopenia was 0.834. The optimal cutoff values were an IBM-Dmean = 2692.75 cGy, an IBM-V15 = 86.65%, and an IBM-V40 = 20.75%. Patients who received oxaliplatin-containing concurrent chemotherapy (ChT) regimens were more likely to experience grade 2+ thrombocytopenia (P = .054). The AUC of concurrent ChT regimens in predicting grade 2+ thrombocytopenia was 0.678. Female gender was significantly associated with grade 2+ anemia and total HT2+ status. Conclusions: Among patients with rectal cancer stage I to III disease who received neo-RT or cur-RT, female patients with higher IBM-Dmean, IBM-V15, and IBM-V40 were more likely to experience grade 2+ leukopenia, and oxaliplatin-containing concurrent ChT regimens were identified as a potential factor for increasing the incidence of grade 2+ thrombocytopenia.
