1. A narrow-linewidth external cavity quantum dot laser for high-resolution spectroscopy in the near-infrared and yellow spectral ranges

Abstract

We demonstrate a diode laser system which is suitable for high-resolution spectroscopy in the 1200 nm and yellow spectral ranges. It is based on a two-facet quantum dot chip in a Littrow-type external cavity configuration. The laser is tunable in the range 1125 -1280 nm, with an output power of more than 200 mW and exhibits a free-running linewidth of 200 kHz. Amplitude and frequency noise were characterized, including the dependence of frequency noise on the cavity length. Frequency stabilization to a high-finesse reference cavity is demonstrated reducing the linewidth to about 20 - 30 kHz. Yellow light (> 3 mW) at 578 nm was generated by frequency doubling in an enhancement cavity containing a PPLN crystal. The source has potential application for precision spectroscopy of ultra-cold Yb atoms and molecular hydrogen ions.

Abstract

The gain compression coefficient was evaluated by applying the frequency modulation/amplitude modulation technique in a distributed feedback InAs/InGaAs quantum dot laser. A strong dependence of the gain compression coefficient on the output power was found. Our analysis of the gain compression within the frame of the modified well-barrier hole burning model reveals that the gain compression coefficient decreases beyond the lasing threshold, which is in a good agreement with the experimental observations. Abstract

We experimentally study the generation and amplification of stable picosecond-short optical pulses by a master oscillator power-amplifier configuration consisting of a monolithic quantum-dot-based gain-guided tapered laser and amplifier emitting at 1.26 μm without pulse compression, external cavity, gain-or Q-switched operation. We report a peak power of 42 W and a figure-of-merit for second-order nonlinear imaging of 38.5 W2 at a repetition rate of 16 GHz and an associated pulse width of 1.37 ps. © 2015 Optical Society of America.

Abstract

Microring cavities (diameter D = 2.7-7 μm) with an active region based on InAs/InGaAs quantum dots are fabricated and their characteristics are studied by the microphotoluminescence method and near-field optical microscopy. A value of 22 000 is obtained for the Q factor of a microring cavity with the diameter D = 6 μm. Lasing up to room temperature is obtained in an optically pumped ring microlaser with a diameter of D = 2.7 μm. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Abstract

In this paper, we present the generation of high peak-power picosecond optical pulses in the 1.26 μm spectral band from a repetitionrate- tunable quantum-dot external-cavity passively mode-locked laser (QDECMLL), amplified by a tapered quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier (QD-SOA). The laser emission wavelength was controlled through a chirped volume Bragg grating which was used as an external cavity output coupler. An average power of 208.2 mW, pulse energy of 321 pJ, and peak power of 30.3 W were achieved. Preliminary nonlinear imaging investigations indicate that this system is promising as a high peakpower pulsed light source for nonlinear bio-imaging applications across the 1.0 μm - 1.3 μm spectral range. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

Abstract

A broadly tunable master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) picosecond optical pulse source is demonstrated, consisting of an external cavity passively mode-locked laser diode with a tapered semiconductor amplifier. By employing chirped quantum-dot structures on both the oscillator's gain chip and amplifier, a wide tunability range between 1187 and 1283 nm is achieved. Under mode-locked operation, the highest output peak power of 4.39 W is achieved from the MOPA, corresponding to a peak power spectral density of 31.4 dBm/nm. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

Abstract

Applicability of electronic control of laser output parameters to bulk solid-state laser sources is demonstrated. A single laser source with variable pulse duration for novel imaging and manipulation systems is presented. Stable passive mode-locking of a Cr4+:forsterite laser using a voltage controlled p-n junction quantum dot saturable absorber was achieved. Output shortening from 17,4 to 6,4 ps near-transform limited pulses was obtained by applying reverse bias.

Abstract

We report on nonlinear optical properties of a p-i-n junction quantum dot saturable absorber based on InGaAs/GaAs. Absorption recovery dynamics and nonlinear reflectivity are investigated for different reverse bias and pump power conditions. A decrease in absorption recovery time of nearly two orders of magnitude is demonstrated by applying a voltage between 0 and −20 V. The saturable absorber modulation depth and saturation fluence are found to be independent from the applied reverse bias.
