This letter presents the measurement of the energy-dependent neutrino-nucleon cross section in tungsten and the differential flux of muon neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $13.6 \, {\rm TeV}$ and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $(65.6 \pm 1.4) \, \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$. Using the active electronic components of the FASER detector, $338.1 \pm 21.0$ charged current muon neutrino interaction events are identified, with backgrounds from other processes subtracted. We unfold the neutrino events into a fiducial volume corresponding to the sensitive regions of the FASER detector and interpret the results in two ways: We use the expected neutrino flux to measure the cross section, and we use the predicted cross section to measure the neutrino flux. Both results are presented in six bins of neutrino energy, achieving the first differential measurement in the TeV range. The observed distributions align with Standard Model predictions. Using this differential data, we extract the contributions of neutrinos from pion and kaon decays.

The first FASER search for a light, long-lived particle decaying into a pair of photons is reported. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6~\text{TeV}$ collected in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $57.7\text{fb}^{-1}$. A model with axion-like particles (ALPs) dominantly coupled to weak gauge bosons is the primary target. Signal events are characterised by high-energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and no signal in the veto scintillators. One event is observed, compared to a background expectation of $0.44 \pm 0.39$ events, which is entirely dominated by neutrino interactions. World-leading constraints on ALPs are obtained for masses up to $300~\text{MeV}$ and couplings to the Standard Model W gauge boson, $g_{aWW}$, around $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$, testing a previously unexplored region of parameter space. Other new particle models that lead to the same experimental signature, including ALPs coupled to gluons or photons, U(1)$_B$ gauge bosons, up-philic scalars, and a Type-I two-Higgs doublet model, are also considered for interpretation, and new constraints on previously viable parameter space are presented in this paper., Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures

Integrated energy systems (IESs) are complex systems consisting of diverse operating units spanning multiple domains. To address its operational challenges, we propose a physics-informed hybrid time-series neural network (NN) surrogate to predict the dynamic performance of IESs across multiple time scales. This neural network-based modeling approach develops time-series multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) for the operating units and integrates them with prior process knowledge about system structure and fundamental dynamics. This integration forms three hybrid NNs (long-term, slow, and fast MLPs) that predict the entire system dynamics across multiple time scales. Leveraging these MLPs, we design an NN-based scheduler and an NN-based economic model predictive control (NEMPC) framework to meet global operational requirements: rapid electrical power responsiveness to operators requests, adequate cooling supply to customers, and increased system profitability, while addressing the dynamic time-scale multiplicity present in IESs. The proposed day-ahead scheduler is formulated using the ReLU network-based MLP, which effectively represents IES performance under a broad range of conditions from a long-term perspective. The scheduler is then exactly recast into a mixed-integer linear programming problem for efficient evaluation. The real-time NEMPC, based on slow and fast MLPs, comprises two sequential distributed control agents: a slow NEMPC for the cooling-dominant subsystem with slower transient responses and a fast NEMPC for the power-dominant subsystem with faster responses. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the developed scheduler and NEMPC schemes outperform their respective benchmark scheduler and controller by about 25% and 40%. Together, they enhance overall system performance by over 70% compared to benchmark approaches.

Efficient water management in agriculture is important for mitigating the growing freshwater scarcity crisis. Mixed-integer Model Predictive Control (MPC) has emerged as an effective approach for addressing the complex scheduling problems in agricultural irrigation. However, the computational complexity of mixed-integer MPC still poses a significant challenge, particularly in large-scale applications. This study proposes an approach to enhance the computational efficiency of mixed-integer MPC-based irrigation schedulers by employing ReLU surrogate models to describe the soil moisture dynamics of the agricultural field. By leveraging the mixed-integer linear representation of the ReLU operator, the proposed approach transforms the mixed-integer MPC-based scheduler with a quadratic cost function into a mixed-integer quadratic program, which is the simplest class of mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems that can be efficiently solved using global optimization solvers. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through comparative studies conducted on a large-scale agricultural field across two growing seasons, involving other machine learning surrogate models, specifically Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, and the widely used triggered irrigation scheduling method. The ReLU-based approach significantly reduces solution times -- by up to 99.5\% -- while achieving comparable performance to the LSTM approach in terms of water savings and Irrigation Water Use Efficiency (IWUE). Moreover, the ReLU-based approach maintains enhanced performance in terms of total prescribed irrigation and IWUE compared to the widely-used triggered irrigation scheduling method.

This paper proposes a Semi-Centralized Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (SCMARL) approach for irrigation scheduling in spatially variable agricultural fields, where management zones address spatial variability. The SCMARL framework is hierarchical in nature, with a centralized coordinator agent at the top level and decentralized local agents at the second level. The coordinator agent makes daily binary irrigation decisions based on field-wide conditions, which are communicated to the local agents. Local agents determine appropriate irrigation amounts for specific management zones using local conditions. The framework employs state augmentation approach to handle non-stationarity in the local agents' environments. An extensive evaluation on a large-scale field in Lethbridge, Canada, compares the SCMARL approach with a learning-based multi-agent model predictive control scheduling approach, highlighting its enhanced performance, resulting in water conservation and improved Irrigation Water Use Efficiency (IWUE). Notably, the proposed approach achieved a 4.0% savings in irrigation water while enhancing the IWUE by 6.3%.

Self-supervised monocular depth estimation has gathered notable interest since it can liberate training from dependency on depth annotations. In monocular video training case, recent methods only conduct view synthesis between existing camera views, leading to insufficient guidance. To tackle this, we try to synthesize more virtual camera views by flow-based video frame interpolation (VFI), termed as temporal augmentation. For multi-frame inference, to sidestep the problem of dynamic objects encountered by explicit geometry-based methods like ManyDepth, we return to the feature fusion paradigm and design a VFI-assisted multi-frame fusion module to align and aggregate multi-frame features, using motion and occlusion information obtained by the flow-based VFI model. Finally, we construct a unified self-supervised learning framework, named Mono-ViFI, to bilaterally connect single- and multi-frame depth. In this framework, spatial data augmentation through image affine transformation is incorporated for data diversity, along with a triplet depth consistency loss for regularization. The single- and multi-frame models can share weights, making our framework compact and memory-efficient. Quantum teleportation is a fundamental ingredient for quantum information science and technology. In particular, the ability to perform quantum teleportation between quantum systems of different natures and encoding types is crucial for building complex systems, such as distributed quantum internet. Here we propose a scheme to teleport a continuous variable optical qubit, encoded in an optical qumode by means of a superposed coherent state, onto a discrete variable solid-state qubit, associated with a single nitrogen-vacancy center spin in diamond, via a hybrid entanglement. By using a newly developed method for Bell-state measurement, which relies only on light homodyne detection and spin polarization measurement, near-deterministic and -perfect quantum teleportation can be achieved for large coherent-state amplitude input. Taking noise effects into account, we find that the average teleportation fidelity can still exceed the classical limit, enabling substantial teleportation distances under realistic experimental conditions.

Accurate soil moisture information is crucial for developing precise irrigation control strategies to enhance water use efficiency. Soil moisture estimation based on limited soil moisture sensors is crucial for obtaining comprehensive soil moisture information when dealing with large-scale agricultural fields. The major challenge in soil moisture estimation lies in the high dimensionality of the spatially discretized agro-hydrological models. In this work, we propose a performance-triggered adaptive model reduction approach to address this challenge. The proposed approach employs a trajectory-based unsupervised machine learning technique, and a prediction performance-based triggering scheme is designed to govern model updates adaptively in a way such that the prediction error between the reduced model and the original model over a prediction horizon is maintained below a predetermined threshold. An adaptive extended Kalman filter (EKF) is designed based on the reduced model for soil moisture estimation. The applicability and performance of the proposed approach are evaluated extensively through the application to a simulated large-scale agricultural field.

This paper presents the first results of the study of high-energy electron and muon neutrino charged-current interactions in the FASER$\nu$ emulsion/tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC. A subset of the FASER$\nu$ volume, which corresponds to a target mass of 128.6~kg, was exposed to neutrinos from the LHC $pp$ collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6~TeV and an integrated luminosity of 9.5 fb$^{-1}$. Applying stringent selections requiring electrons with reconstructed energy above 200~GeV, four electron neutrino interaction candidate events are observed with an expected background of $0.025^{+0.015}_{-0.010}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.2$\sigma$. This is the first direct observation of electron neutrino interactions at a particle collider. Eight muon neutrino interaction candidate events are also detected, with an expected background of $0.22^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.7$\sigma$. The signal events include neutrinos with energies in the TeV range, the highest-energy electron and muon neutrinos ever detected from an artificial source. The energy-independent part of the interaction cross section per nucleon is measured over an energy range of 560--1740 GeV (520--1760 GeV) for $\nu_e$ ($\nu_{\mu}$) to be $(1.2_{-0.7}^{+0.8}) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ ($(0.5\pm0.2) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$), consistent with Standard Model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges.

The Forward Search Experiment (FASER) at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has recently directly detected the first collider neutrinos. Neutrinos play an important role in all FASER analyses, either as signal or background, and it is therefore essential to understand the neutrino event rates. In this study, we update previous simulations and present prescriptions for theoretical predictions of neutrino fluxes and cross sections, together with their associated uncertainties. With these results, we discuss the potential for possible measurements that could be carried out in the coming years with the FASER neutrino data to be collected in LHC Run 3 and Run 4., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Accurate detection and analysis of traces of persistent organic pollutants in water is important in many areas, including environmental monitoring and food quality control, due to their long environmental stability and potential bioaccumulation. While conventional analysis of organic pollutants requires expensive equipment, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has demonstrated great potential for accurate detection of these contaminants. However, SERS analytical difficulties, such as spectral preprocessing, denoising, and substrate-based spectral variation, have hindered widespread use of the technique. Here, we demonstrate an approach for predicting the concentration of sample pollutants from messy, unprocessed Raman data using machine learning. Frequency domain transform methods, including the Fourier and Walsh Hadamard transforms, are applied to sets of Raman spectra of three model micropollutants in water (rhodamine 6G, chlorpyrifos, and triclosan), which are then used to train machine learning algorithms. Using standard machine learning models, the concentration of sample pollutants are predicted with more than 80 percent cross-validation accuracy from raw Raman data. cross-validation accuracy of 85 percent was achieved using deep learning for a moderately sized dataset (100 spectra), and 70 to 80 percent cross-validation accuracy was achieved even for very small datasets (50 spectra). Additionally, standard models were shown to accurately identify characteristic peaks via analysis of their importance scores. The approach shown here has the potential to be applied to facilitate accurate detection and analysis of persistent organic pollutants by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

We propose an approach to produce spin squeezed states of a large number of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond nanostructures coupled to an optical cavity. Unlike the previous squeezing method proposed by Bennett et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 156402 (2013)], which is limited by phonon number fluctuations due to the existence of phonon-spin entanglement, our proposal can completely erase the entanglement between spins and hybrid phonon-photon mode mediating the effective spin-spin interaction, and thus achieves unitary one-axis-twisting interactions between nitrogen-vacancy centres, yielding a squeezing scaling $J^{-2/3}$, where J is the total angular momentum. We found that, under certain conditions, our method has the potential to enhance the spin-spin nonlinear interactions. We also proposed a scheme utilizing repeatedly applying the one-axis-twisting evolution to two orthogonal spin directions, which enables the transformation of the one-axis-twisting interactions into two-axis-twisting type, and therefore leads to the spin squeezing with Heisenberg-limited scaling $J^{-1}$. Taking into account the noise effects of spin dephasing and relaxtion, we found that the proposed approaches are robust against imperfections.

This paper addresses the multi-agent control problem under global temporal logic tasks, considering agents with heterogeneous capabilities. These global tasks involve not only absolute and relative temporal and spatial constraints, but also group behaviors, including task completion times, agent capabilities, and task interdependencies such as the need for synchronous execution. The global tasks are formally formulated into global signal temporal logic (STL) formulae, and a synchronous robustness metric is designed to evaluate the synchronization quality with real values. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) encoding method is further proposed to realize task-satisfied motion planning with high synchronicity and minimum control efforts. The encoding method uses a logarithmic number of binary variables to fully capture synchronous robustness, leading to only linear computational complexity. Depth estimation plays an important role in the robotic perception system. Self-supervised monocular paradigm has gained significant attention since it can free training from the reliance on depth annotations. Despite recent advancements, existing self-supervised methods still underutilize the available training data, limiting their generalization ability. In this paper, we take two data augmentation techniques, namely Resizing-Cropping and Splitting-Permuting, to fully exploit the potential of training datasets. Specifically, the original image and the generated two augmented images are fed into the training pipeline simultaneously and we leverage them to conduct self-distillation. Additionally, we introduce the detail-enhanced DepthNet with an extra full-scale branch in the encoder and a grid decoder to enhance the restoration of fine details in depth maps. Experimental results demonstrate our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on the KITTI benchmark, with both raw ground truth and improved ground truth. Moreover, our models also show superior generalization performance when transferring to Make3D and NYUv2 datasets. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have emerged as indispensable assets in medicine, and are currently at the forefront of biopharmaceutical product development. However, the growing market demand and the substantial doses required for mAb clinical treatments necessitate significant progress in its large-scale production. Most of the processes for industrial mAb production rely on batch operations, which result in significant downtime. The shift towards a fully continuous and integrated manufacturing process holds the potential to boost product yield and quality, while eliminating the extra expenses associated with storing intermediate products. The integrated continuous mAb production process can be divided into the upstream and downstream processes. One crucial aspect that ensures the continuity of the integrated process is the switching of the capture columns, which are typically chromatography columns operated in a fed-batch manner downstream. Due to the discrete nature of the switching operation, advanced process control algorithms such as economic MPC (EMPC) are computationally difficult to implement. This is because an integer nonlinear program (INLP) needs to be solved online at each sampling time. This paper introduces two computationally-efficient approaches for EMPC implementation, namely, a sigmoid function approximation approach and a rectified linear unit (ReLU) approximation approach. It also explores the application of deep reinforcement learning (DRL). These three methods are compared to the traditional switching approach which is based on a 1% product breakthrough rule and which involves no optimization.

The agricultural sector currently faces significant challenges in water resource conservation and crop yield optimization, primarily due to concerns over freshwater scarcity. Traditional irrigation scheduling methods often prove inadequate in meeting the needs of large-scale irrigation systems. To address this issue, this paper proposes a predictive irrigation scheduler that leverages the three paradigms of machine learning to optimize irrigation schedules. The proposed scheduler employs the k-means clustering approach to divide the field into distinct irrigation management zones based on soil hydraulic parameters and topology information. Furthermore, a long short-term memory network is employed to develop dynamic models for each management zone, enabling accurate predictions of soil moisture dynamics. Formulated as a mixed-integer model predictive control problem, the scheduler aims to maximize water uptake while minimizing overall water consumption and irrigation costs. To tackle the mixed-integer optimization challenge, the proximal policy optimization algorithm is utilized to train a reinforcement learning agent responsible for making daily irrigation decisions. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheduler, a 26.4-hectare field in Lethbridge, Canada, was chosen as a case study for the 2015 and 2022 growing seasons. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheduler compared to a traditional irrigation scheduling method in terms of water use efficiency and crop yield improvement for both growing seasons. Notably, the proposed scheduler achieved water savings ranging from 6.4% to 22.8%, along with yield increases ranging from 2.3% to 4.3%.

The importance of accurate soil moisture data for the development of modern closed-loop irrigation systems cannot be overstated. Due to the diversity of soil, it is difficult to obtain an accurate model for agro-hydrological system. In this study, soil moisture estimation in 1D agro-hydrological systems with model mismatch is the focus. To address the problem of model mismatch, a nonlinear state-space model derived from the Richards equation is utilized, along with additive unknown inputs. The determination of the number of sensors required is achieved through sensitivity analysis and the orthogonalization projection method. To estimate states and unknown inputs in real-time, a recursive expectation maximization (EM) algorithm derived from the conventional EM algorithm is employed. During the E-step, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to compute states and covariance in the recursive Q-function, while in the M-step, unknown inputs are updated by locally maximizing the recursive Q-function. The estimation performance is evaluated using comprehensive simulations. Through this method, accurate soil moisture estimation can be obtained, even in the presence of model mismatch.

Reinforcement learning (RL) is an area of significant research interest, and safe RL in particular is attracting attention due to its ability to handle safety-driven constraints that are crucial for real-world applications. This work proposes a novel approach to RL training, called control invariant set (CIS) enhanced RL, which leverages the advantages of utilizing the explicit form of CIS to improve stability guarantees and sampling efficiency. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed approach is investigated in the presence of uncertainty. The approach consists of two learning stages: offline and online. In the offline stage, CIS is incorporated into the reward design, initial state sampling, and state reset procedures. This incorporation of CIS facilitates improved sampling efficiency during the offline training process. In the online stage, RL is retrained whenever the predicted next step state is outside of the CIS, which serves as a stability criterion, by introducing a Safety Supervisor to examine the safety of the action and make necessary corrections. The stability analysis is conducted for both cases, with and without uncertainty. To evaluate the proposed approach, we apply it to a simulated chemical reactor. Improving the accuracy of soil moisture estimation is desirable from the perspectives of irrigation management and water conservation. To this end, this study proposes a systematic approach to select a subset of soil hydraulic parameters for estimation in large-scale agrohydrological systems to enhance soil moisture estimation accuracy. The proposed method involves simultaneous estimation of the selected parameters and the entire soil moisture distribution of the field, taking into account soil heterogeneity and using soil moisture observations obtained through microwave radiometers mounted on a center pivot irrigation system. At its core, the proposed method models the field with the cylindrical coordinate version of the Richards equation and addresses the issue of parameter estimability (quantitative parameter identifiability) through the sensitivity analysis and orthogonal projection approaches. Additionally, the study assimilates remotely sensed soil moisture observations into the field model using the extended Kalman filtering technique. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated through numerical simulations and a real field experiment, with cross-validation results showing a 24-43% improvement in soil moisture estimation accuracy. Overall, the study highlights the potential of this method to enhance soil moisture estimation in large-scale agricultural fields.

We propose a robust nonlinear model predictive control design with generalized zone tracking (ZMPC) in this work. The proposed ZMPC has guaranteed convergence into the target zone in the presence of bounded disturbance. The proposed approach achieves this by modifying the actual target zone such that the effect of disturbances is rejected. A control invariant set (CIS) inside the modified target zone is used as the terminal set, which ensures the closed-loop stability of the proposed controller. Detailed closed-loop stability analysis is presented. Simulation studies based on a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed ZMPC.

The close integration of increasing operating units into an integrated energy system (IES) results in complex interconnections between these units. The strong dynamic interactions create barriers to designing a successful distributed coordinated controller to achieve synergy between all the units and unlock the potential for grid response. To address these challenges, we introduce a directed graph representation of IESs using an augmented Jacobian matrix to depict their underlying dynamics topology. By utilizing this representation, a generic subsystem decomposition method is proposed to partition the entire IES vertically based on the dynamic time scale and horizontally based on the closeness of interconnections between the operating units. Exploiting the decomposed subsystems, we develop a cooperative distributed economic model predictive control (DEMPC) with multiple global objectives that regulate the generated power at the grid's requests and satisfy the customers cooling and system economic requirements. In the DEMPC, multiple local decision-making agents cooperate sequentially and iteratively to leverage the potential across all the units for system-wide dynamic synergy. Furthermore, we discuss how subsystem decomposition impacts the design of distributed cooperation schemes for IESs and provide a control-oriented basic guideline on the optimal decomposition of complex energy systems. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the control strategies with different levels of decomposition and collaboration will lead to marked differences in the overall performance of IES. The standard control scheme based on the proposed subsystem configuration outperforms the empirical decomposition-based control benchmark by about 20%. The DEMPC architecture further improves the overall performance of the IES by about 55% compared to the benchmark.

This paper presents an efficient approach for state estimation of post-combustion CO2 capture plants (PCCPs) by using reduced-order neural network models. The method involves extracting lower-dimensional feature vectors from high-dimensional operational data of the PCCP and constructing a reduced-order process model using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural networks capture the dominant dynamics of the process and train the network parameters with low-dimensional data obtained from open-loop simulations. The proposed POD-MLP model can be used as the basis for estimating the states of PCCPs at a significantly decreased computational cost. For state estimation, a reduced-order extended Kalman filtering (EKF) scheme based on the POD-MLP model is developed. Our simulations demonstrate that the proposed POD-MLP modeling approach reduces computational complexity compared to the POD-only model for nonlinear systems. Additionally, the POD-MLP-EKF algorithm can accurately reconstruct the full state information of PCCPs while significantly improving computational efficiency compared to the EKF based on the original PCCP model.

During the preceding biennium, vision-language pre-training has achieved noteworthy success on several downstream tasks. Nevertheless, acquiring high-quality image-text pairs, where the pairs are entirely exclusive of each other, remains a challenging task, and noise exists in the commonly used datasets. To address this issue, we propose SoftCLIP, a novel approach that relaxes the strict one-to-one constraint and achieves a soft cross-modal alignment by introducing a softened target, which is generated from the fine-grained intra-modal self-similarity. The intra-modal guidance is indicative to enable two pairs have some local similarities and model many-to-many relationships between the two modalities. Besides, since the positive still dominates in the softened target distribution, we disentangle the negatives in the distribution to further boost the relation alignment with the negatives in the cross-modal learning. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of SoftCLIP. In particular, on ImageNet zero-shot classification task, using CC3M/CC12M as pre-training dataset, SoftCLIP brings a top-1 accuracy improvement of 6.8%/7.2% over the CLIP baseline.
