Kagome magnets provide a fascinating platform for the realization of correlated topological quantum phases under various magnetic ground states. However, the effect of the magnetic spin configurations on the characteristic electronic structure of the kagome lattice layer remains elusive. Here, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we report the spectroscopic evidence for the spin-reorientation effect of a kagome ferromagnet Fe$_3$Ge, which is composed solely of kagome planes. As the Fe moments cant from the $c$ axis into the $ab$ plane upon cooling, the two kinds of kagome-derived Dirac fermions respond quite differently. The one with less-dispersive bands ($k_z$ $\sim$ 0) containing the $3d_{z^2}$ orbitals evolves from gapped into nearly gapless, while the other with linear dispersions ($k_z$ $\sim$ $\pi$) embracing the $3d_{xz}$/$3d_{yz}$ components remains intact, suggesting that the effect of spin reorientation on the Dirac fermions has an orbital selectivity. Moreover, we demonstrate that there is no signature of charge order formation in Fe$_3$Ge, contrasting with its sibling compound FeGe, a newly established charge-density-wave kagome magnet., Comment: 40 pages, 5 figures

Magnetic topological quantum materials display a diverse range of fascinating physical properties which arise from their intrinsic magnetism and the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. However, so far, few examples of intrinsic magnetic topological materials have been confirmed experimentally, which significantly hinder our comprehensive understanding of the abundant physical properties in this system. The kagome lattices, which host diversity of electronic structure signatures such as Dirac nodes, flat bands, and saddle points, provide an alternative and promising platform for in-depth investigations into correlations and band topology. In this article, drawing inspiration from the stacking configuration of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, we conceive and then synthesize a high-quality single crystal EuTi$_3$Bi$_4$, which is a unique natural heterostructure consisting of both topological kagome layers and magnetic interlayers. We investigate the electronic structure of EuTi$_3$Bi$_4$ and uncover distinct features of anisotropic multiple Van Hove singularitie (VHS) that might prevent Fermi surface nesting, leading to the absence of a charge density wave (CDW). In addition, we identify the topological nontrivial surface states that serve as connections between different saddle bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Combined with calculations, we establish that, the effective time-reversal symmetry S=$\theta$$\tau_{1/2}$ play a crucial role in the antiferromagnetic ground state of EuTi$_3$Bi$_4$, which ensures the stability of the topological surface states and gives rise to their intriguing topological nature. RV6Sn6 (R = Y and lanthanides) with two-dimensional vanadium-kagome surface states is an ideal platform to investigate kagome physics and manipulate the kagome features to realize novel phenomena. Utilizing the micron-scale spatially resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we report a systematical study of the electronic structures of RV6Sn6 (R = Gd, Tb, and Lu) on the two cleaved surfaces, i.e., the V- and RSn1-terminated (001) surfaces. The calculated bands without any renormalization match well with the main ARPES dispersive features, indicating the weak electronic correlation in this system. We observe 'W'-like kagome surface states around the Brillouin zone corners showing R-element-dependent intensities, which is probably due to various coupling strengths between V and RSn1 layers. Our finding suggests an avenue for tuning electronic states by interlayer coupling based on two-dimensional kagome lattices.

Layered kagome-lattice materials with 3$d$ transition metals provide a fertile playground for studies on geometry frustration, band topology and other novel ordered states. A representative class of materials AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) have been proved to possess various unconventional phases such as superconductivity, non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ band topology, and electronic nematicity, which are intertwined with multiple interlaced charge density waves (CDW). However, the interplay among these novel states and their mechanisms are still elusive. Recently, the discovery of isostructural titanium-based single-crystals ATi$_3$Bi$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs), which demonstrate similar multiple exotic states but in the absence of the concomitant intertwined CDW, has been offering an ideal opportunity to disentangle these complex novel states in kagome-lattice. Here, we combine the high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to systematically investigate the low-lying electronic structure of RbTi$_3$Bi$_5$. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the coexistence of flat bands and multiple non-trivial topological states, including type-II Dirac nodal lines and non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological surface states therein. Furthermore, our findings as well provide the hint of rotation symmetry breaking in RbTi$_3$Bi$_5$, suggesting the directionality of the electronic structure and possibility of emerging pure electronic nematicity in this new family of kagome compounds, which may provide important insights into the electronic nematic phase in correlated kagome metals., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Kagome superconductors AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) provide a fertile playground for studying intriguing phenomena, including non-trivial band topology, superconductivity, giant anomalous Hall effect and charge density wave (CDW). Recently, a $C_2$ symmetric nematic phase prior to the superconducting state in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ drew enormous attention due to its potential inheritance of the symmetry of the unusual superconductivity. However, direct evidence on the rotation symmetry breaking of the electronic structure in the CDW state from the reciprocal space is still rare, and the underlying mechanism remains ambiguous. The observation shows unconventional unidirectionality, indicative of rotation symmetry breaking from six-fold to two-fold. The interlayer coupling between adjacent planes with $\pi$-phase offset in the 2$\times$2$\times$2 CDW phase leads to the preferred two-fold symmetric electronic structure. These rarely observed unidirectional back-folded bands in KV$_3$Sb$_5$ may provide important insights into its peculiar charge order and superconductivity.

To generate laser with short wavelength is a bottle-neck problem in laser technology. The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lasers are usually produced with low efficiency by nonlinear multi-photon process. Here we show the generation of 58.4 nm laser by a single-photon-excitation related stimulated anti-Stokes Raman scattering (ASRS) with an efficiency higher than that of high harmonic generation (HHG). Utilizing microwave excited helium in the metastable 1s2s state irradiated by a resonant femto-second 2058 nm laser, we obtain pulsed 58.4 nm laser with a divergence of 1.9 mrad, suggesting its coherent character. The pulse decay time of 426 ps shorter than the lifetime of spontaneous emission also shows its stimulated property. Our results show an applicable path towards up-conversion by single-photon process to generate intense laser with wavelength shorter than 58.4 nm.

Fundamental understanding and control of the electronic structure evolution in rare-earth nickelates is a fascinating and meaningful issue, as well as being helpful to understand the mechanism of recently discovered superconductivity. Here we systematically study the dimensionality effect on the ground electronic state in high-quality (NdNiO3)m/(SrTiO3)1 superlattices through transport and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The metal-to-insulator transition temperature decreases with the thickness of the NdNiO3 slab decreasing from bulk to 7 unit cells, then increases gradually as m further reduces to 1 unit cell. Spectral evidence demonstrates that the stabilization of insulating phase can be attributed to the increase of the charge-transfer energy between O 2p and Ni 3d bands. The prominent multiplet feature on the Ni L3 edge develops with the decrease of NdNiO3 slab thickness, suggesting the strengthening of the charge disproportionate state under the dimensional confinement. Quantum materials with layered kagome structures have drawn considerable attention due to their unique lattice geometry, which gives rise to flat bands co-existing with Dirac-like dispersions. The interplay between strong Coulomb correlations and nontrivial band topology in these systems results in various exotic phenomena. Recently, vanadium-based materials with layered kagome structures are discovered to be topological metals, which exhibit charge density wave (CDW) properties, significant anomalous Hall effect, and unusual superconductivity at low temperatures. Here we exploit high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure evolution induced by the CDW transition in a vanadium-based kagome material RbV3Sb5. A remarkable band renormalization in the CDW state is observed, which is consistent with first principles calculations based on an inverse star-of-David superstructure. The CDW phase transition gives rise to a partial energy gap opening at the Fermi level, a shift in the band dispersion, and most importantly, the emergence of new van Hove singularities associated with large density of states, which are absent in the normal phase and may be related to superconductivity observed at lower temperatures. Recently discovered Z2 topological kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) exhibit charge density wave (CDW) phases and novel superconducting paring states, providing a versatile platform for studying the interplay between electron correlation and quantum orders. Here we directly visualize CDW-induced bands renormalization and energy gaps in RbV3Sb5 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, pointing to the key role of tuning van Hove singularities to the Fermi energy in mechanisms of ordering phases. Near the CDW transition temperature, the bands around the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary are shifted to high-binding energy, forming an "M"-shape band with singularities near the Fermi energy. The Fermi surfaces are partially gapped and the electronic states on the residual ones should be possibly dedicated to the superconductivity. Our findings are significant in understanding CDW formation and its associated superconductivity.

Electron-boson interaction is fundamental to a thorough understanding of various exotic properties emerging in many-body physics. In photoemission spectroscopy, photoelectron emission due to photon absorption would trigger diverse collective excitations in solids, including the emergence of phonons, magnons, electron-hole pairs, and plasmons, which naturally provides a reliable pathway to study electron-boson couplings. While fingerprints of electron-phonon/-magnon interactions in this state-of-the-art technique have been well investigated, much less is known about electron-plasmon coupling, and direct observation of the band renormalization solely due to electron-plasmon interactions is extremely challenging. Here by utilizing integrated oxide molecular-beam epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discover the long sought-after pure electron-plasmon coupling-induced low-lying plasmonic-polaron replica bands in epitaxial semimetallic SrIrO$_3$ films, in which the characteristic low carrier concentration and narrow bandwidth combine to provide a unique platform where the electron-plasmon interaction can be investigated kinematically in photoemission spectroscopy. This finding enriches the forms of electron band normalization on collective modes in solids and demonstrates that, to obtain a complete understanding of the quasiparticle dynamics in 5d electron systems, the electron-plasmon interaction should be considered on equal footing with the acknowledged electron-electron interaction and spin-orbit coupling., Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures

The discovery of signatures of topological superconductivity in superconducting bulk materials with topological surface states has attracted intensive research interests recently. Utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, here, we demonstrate the existence of topological nodal-line states and drumheadlike surface states in centrosymmetric superconductor SnTaS2, which is a type-II superconductor with a critical transition temperature of about 3 K. The valence bands from Ta 5d orbitals and the conduction bands from Sn 5p orbitals cross each other, forming two nodal lines in the vicinity of the Fermi energy without the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), protected by the spatial-inversion symmetry and time-reversal symmetry. The nodal lines are gapped out by SOC. The drumheadlike surface states, the typical characteristics in nodal-line semimetals, are quite visible near the Fermi level. Our findings indicate that SnTaS2 offers a promising platform for exploring the exotic properties of the topological nodal-line fermions and gives a help to study topological superconductivity., Comment: to appear in Physical Review B

Kagome-net, appearing in areas of fundamental physics, materials, photonic and cold-atom systems, hosts frustrated fermionic and bosonic excitations. However, it is extremely rare to find a system to study both fermionic and bosonic modes to gain insights into their many-body interplay. Here we use state-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to discover unusual electronic coupling to flat-band phonons in a layered kagome paramagnet. Our results reveal the kagome structure with unprecedented atomic resolution and observe the striking bosonic mode interacting with dispersive kagome electrons near the Fermi surface. At this mode energy, the fermionic quasi-particle dispersion exhibits a pronounced renormalization, signaling a giant coupling to bosons. Through a combination of self-energy analysis, first-principles calculation, and a lattice vibration model, we present evidence that this mode arises from the geometrically frustrated phonon flat-band, which is the lattice analog of kagome electron flat-band. Our findings provide the first example of kagome bosonic mode (flat-band phonon) in electronic excitations and its strong interaction with fermionic degrees of freedom in kagome-net materials., Comment: To appear in Nature Communications (2020)

Layered kagome-lattice 3d transition metals are emerging as an exciting platform to explore the frustrated lattice geometry and quantum topology. However, the typical kagome electronic bands, characterized by sets of the Dirac-like band capped by a phase-destructive flat band, have not been clearly observed, and their orbital physics are even less well investigated. Here, we present close-to-textbook kagome bands with orbital differentiation physics in CoSn, which can be well described by a minimal tight-binding model with single-orbital hopping in Co kagome lattice. The capping flat bands with bandwidth less than 0.2 eV run through the whole Brillouin zone, especially the bandwidth of the flat band of out-of-plane orbitals is less than 0.02 eV along G-M. The energy gap induced by spin-orbit interaction at the Dirac cone of out-of-plane orbitals is much smaller than that of in-plane orbitals, suggesting orbital-selective character of the Dirac fermions.

A series of Sr(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals was synthesized allowing a comprehensive phase diagram with respect to field, temperature, and chemical substitution to be established. Our neutron diffraction experiments revealed a helimagnetic order with magnetic moments ferromagnetically (FM) aligned in the $ab$ plane and a helimagnetic wavevector of $q=(0,0,0.56)$ for $x$ = 0.1. The combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that the tuning of a flat band with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital character drives the helimagnetism and indicates the possibility of a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures, Supplementary Material available upon request, accepted by Phys. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $\textbf{Q}_{\rm AF}$=(1,0) and $\textbf{Q}_{\rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$ are closely associated with a flat band of the $e_g$ orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the $t_{2g}$ orbitals in superconducting SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$. Therefore, Co-substitution in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ induces a $t_{2g}$ to $e_g$ orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material available upon request, to be published in PRL

Topological nodal-line semimetals are characterized by the line-contact bulk band crossings and the topological surface states. Breaking certain protecting symmetry turns this system into a Dirac semimetal or Weyl semimetal that hosts zero-dimensional isolated nodal points. Recent advances in band theory predicted a topological nodal-line semimetal state possessing a new type of nodal line in AlB$_2$-type diborides. Here, we report an experimental realization of nodal-line fermions and associated surface states near the Fermi energy in ZrB$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations. The Dirac nodal lines in ZrB$_2$ wind into two groups of nodal rings, which are linked together along the $\Gamma$-$K$ direction. We further observe a distinct surface state connecting to each nodal line, indicative of the nontrivial topological nature of the bulk nodal lines. Therefore, our results provide convincing experimental evidence of the nodal-line semimetal states in ZrB$_2$ both in the bulk and on the surface, suggesting ZrB$_2$ as a remarkable platform for discovering unique phenomena induced by nodal-line fermions., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

This paper addresses the task of nuclei segmentation in high-resolution histopathological images. We propose an auto- matic end-to-end deep neural network algorithm for segmenta- tion of individual nuclei. A nucleus-boundary model is introduced to predict nuclei and their boundaries simultaneously using a fully convolutional neural network. Given a color normalized image, the model directly outputs an estimated nuclei map and a boundary map. A simple, fast and parameter-free post-processing procedure is performed on the estimated nuclei map to produce the final segmented nuclei. An overlapped patch extraction and assembling method is also designed for seamless prediction of nuclei in large whole-slide images. We also show the effectiveness of data augmentation methods for nuclei segmentation task. Our experiments showed our method outperforms prior state-of-the- art methods. Moreover, it is efficient that one 1000X1000 image can be segmented in less than 5 seconds. This makes it possible to precisely segment the whole-slide image in acceptable time, Comment: 13 pages. 12 figures

The origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic materials is one of the most intriguing aspect in condensed matter physics and has been controversial for a long time. Recent studies indicate that the intrinsic AHE is closely related to the Berry curvature of occupied electronic states. In a magnetic Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, there are significant contributions on Berry curvature around Weyl nodes, which would lead to a large intrinsic AHE. Here, we report the large intrinsic AHE in the half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 single crystal. By systematically mapping out the electronic structure of Co3Sn2S2 theoretically and experimentally, the large intrinsic AHE should originate from the Weyl fermions near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization and this can be attributed to the sharp decrease of magnetization and the change of topological characteristics., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

The topological nodal-line semimetal state, serving as a fertile ground for various topological quantum phases, where a topological insulator, Dirac semimetal, or Weyl semimetal can be realized when the certain protecting symmetry is broken, has only been experimentally studied in very few materials. In contrast to discrete nodes, nodal lines with rich topological configurations can lead to more unusual transport phenomena. Utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, here, we provide compelling evidence of nodal-line fermions in centrosymmetric semimetal TiB$_2$ with a negligible spin-orbit coupling effect. With the band crossings just below the Fermi energy, two groups of Dirac nodal rings are clearly observed without any interference from other bands, one surrounding the Brillouin zone (BZ) corner in the horizontal mirror plane $\sigma_h$ and the other surrounding the BZ center in the vertical mirror plane $\sigma_v$. The linear dispersions forming Dirac nodal rings are as wide as 2 eV. We further observe that the two groups of nodal rings link together along the $\Gamma$-$K$ direction, composing a nodal-link configuration. The simple electronic structure with Dirac nodal links mainly constituting the Fermi surfaces suggests TiB$_2$ as a remarkable platform for studying and applying the novel physical properties related to nodal-line fermions., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Half-metals are a class of materials that are metallic only for one spin direction, and are essential for spintronics applications where one needs to read, write, store and transfer spin-data. This spin sensitivity appears to restrict them to be magnetic, and the known examples indeed are. The fabrication of real spintronic devices from such materials is often hampered, however, by stray magnetic fields, domain walls, short spin coherence times, scattering on magnetic atoms or magnetically active interfaces, and other characteristics that come along with the magnetism. The surfaces of topological insulators, or Dirac or Weyl semimetals, could be an alternative, but production of high-quality thin films without the presence of the bulk states at the Fermi level remains very challenging. Here we introduce non-magnetic half-metals and demonstrate that this state is realized in IrBiSe. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and band structure calculations we find a record-high Dresselhaus spin-orbit splitting, fully spin-polarized remnant Fermi surfaces and a chiral 3D spin-texture, all with no magnetism present. Promising applications include using IrBiSe as a source of spin-polarized electrons, and lightly doped IrBiSe is expected to generate electric-field-controlled spin-polarized currents, free from back scattering, and could host triplet superconductivity.
