Abstract

On-chip integrated metasurface driven by in-plane guided waves is of great interests in various light field manipulation applications such as colorful augmented reality and holographic display. However, it remains a challenge to design colorful multichannel holography by a single on-chip metasurface. Here we present metasurfaces integrated on top of guided-wave photonic slab that achieves multi-channel colorful holographic light display. An end-to-end scheme is used to inverse design the metasurface for projecting off-chip preset multiple patterns. Particular examples are presented for customized patterns that were encoded into the metasurface with a single-cell meta-atom, working simultaneously at RGB color channels and for several different diffractive distance, with polarization dependence. Holographic images are generated at 18 independent channels with such a single-cell metasurface. 24. Genome sequencing and CAZymes repertoire analysis of Diaporthe eres P3-1W causing postharvest fruit rot of 'Hongyang' kiwifruit in China.

Abstract

Postharvest rot caused by various fungal pathogens is a damaging disease affecting kiwifruit production and quality, resulting in significant annual economic losses. This study focused on isolating the strain P3-1W, identified as Diaporthe eres, as the causal agent of 'Hongyang' postharvest rot disease in China. The investigation highlighted cell wall degrading enzymes (CWDEs) as crucial pathogenic factors. Specially, the enzymatic activities of cellulase, β-galactosidase, polygalacturonase, and pectin methylesterases peaked significantly on the second day after infection of D. eres P3-1W. To gain a comprehensive understanding of these CWDEs, the genome of this strain was sequenced using PacBio and Illumina sequencing technologies. The analysis revealed that the genome of D. eres P3-1W spans 58,489,835 bp, with an N50 of 5,939,879 bp and a GC content of 50.7%. A total of 15,407 total protein-coding genes (PCGs) were predicted and functionally annotated. Notably, 857 carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) were identified in D. eres P3-1W, with 521 CWDEs consisting of 374 glycoside hydrolases (GHs), 108 carbohydrate esterase (CEs) and 91 polysaccharide lyases (PLs). Additionally, 221 auxiliary activities (AAs), 91 glycosyltransferases (GTs), and 108 carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs) were detected. 37. Hyaluronic Acid/Gelatin-Based Multifunctional Bioadhesive Hydrogel Loaded with a Broad-Spectrum Bacteriocin for Enhancing Diabetic Wound Healing

Abstract

The development of multifunctional wound adhesives is critical in clinical settings due to the scarcity of dressings with effective adhesive properties while protecting against infection by drug-resistant bacteria. Polysaccharide and gelatin-based hydrogels, known for their biocompatibility and bioactivity, assist in wound healing. This study introduces a multifunctional bioadhesive hydrogel developed through dynamic covalent bonding and light-triggered covalent bonding, comprising oxidized hyaluronic acid, methacrylated gelatin, and the bacteriocin recently discovered by our lab, named jileicin (JC). The adhesion strength of the hydrogel, measured at 180 kPa, was 4.35 times higher than that of the fibrin glue. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrated robust platelet adhesion, procoagulant activity, and outstanding hemostatic properties in a mouse liver injury model. Incorporating JC significantly enhanced the phagocytosis and bactericidal capabilities of the macrophages. This immunomodulatory function on host cells, coupled with its potent bacterial membrane-disrupting ability, makes JC an effective killer against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In wound repair experiments on diabetic mice with infected full-thickness skin defects, the hydrogel treatment group showed a notable reduction in bacterial load, accelerated M2-type macrophage polarization, diminished inflammation, and hastened wound healing. Owing to its outstanding biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and controlled adhesion, this hydrogel presents a promising therapeutic option for treating infected skin wounds.

46. Starting a Romantic Relationship, Breakups, and Sleep: A Longitudinal Study of Chinese Adolescents.

Abstract

Epidemiological data on the association between romantic experiences and sleep in adolescents are limited. This study examined the associations of starting a romantic relationship (SRR) and romantic breakups with insomnia symptoms and sleep duration in adolescents. A total of 7,072 Chinese adolescents were surveyed in November–December 2015 and 1 year later. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess SRR, romantic breakups, sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, depressive symptoms, substance use, and demographics. The mean age of the sample was 14.58 (SD = 1.46) years and half were female. SRR only, breakups only, and both (SRR + breakups) in the past year were reported by 7.0%, 8.4%, and 15.4% of the sample, respectively. At the baseline and 1-year follow-up, 15.2% and 14.7% of the sample had insomnia symptoms and 47.7% and 42.1% reported short sleep duration (<7 h/night), respectively. After adjusting for depressive symptoms, substance use, and demographics, SRR and breakups were significantly associated with 35–45% increased odds of insomnia symptoms at baseline. SRR + breakups were significantly associated with short sleep duration (OR = 1.28, 95%CI = 1.05–1.56). SRR (OR = 1.61, 95%CI = 1.16–2.23) and breakups (OR = 1.43, 95%CI = 1.04–1.96) were significantly associated with increased odds of incident insomnia symptoms at 1-year follow-up. These associations were stronger in younger adolescents (<15 years) than in older adolescents (≥15 years), especially in girls. The findings suggest that SRR and breakups are associated with insomnia symptoms and short sleep duration, underscoring the importance of romantic relationships education and management of romantic stress for healthy sleep especially in early adolescent girls.
