Search

The interplay of symmetry and topology in crystal solids has given rise to various elementary excitations as quasiparticles. Among these, those with significant Berry-phase-related transport responses are of particular interest. Here, we predict a new type of quasiparticle called topological charge quadruple (TCQ), which is analogous to a charge quadrupole but consists of two closely-packed pairs of Weyl points in momentum space, specifically in a half-Heusler antiferromagnet NdBiPt. Interestingly, the TCQ is protected by the spin-orbit $U(1)$ quasi-symmetry, rather than any exact crystallographic symmetries. This quasi-symmetry restricts the energy splitting induced by symmetry-lowering perturbations to a second-order effect. Furthermore, the closely located Berry curvature sources and sinks in the TCQ lead to a large Berry curvature dipole, resulting in a significant nonlinear Hall effect. Quantum spin Hall insulators hosting edge spin currents hold great potential for low-power spintronic devices. In this paper, we present a universal approach to achieve a high and near-quantized spin Hall conductance plateau within a sizable bulk gap. Using a nonmagnetic four-band model Hamiltonian, we demonstrate that an even-spin Chern (ESC) insulator can be accessed by tuning the sign of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) within a crystal symmetry-enforced orbital doublet. With the assistance of a high spin Chern number of $C_{S}=-2$ and spin $U$(1) quasisymmetry, this orbital-doublet-driven ESC phase is endowed with the near-double-quantized spin Hall conductance. We identify 12 crystallographic point groups supporting such a sign-tunable SOC. Furthermore, we apply our theory to realistic examples, and show the phase transition from a trivial insulator governed by positive SOC in the RuI$_{3}$ monolayer to an ESC insulator dominated by negative SOC in the RuBr$_{3}$ monolayer. This orbital-doublet-driven ESC insulator, RuBr$_{3}$, showcases nontrivial characteristics including helical edge states, near-double-quantized spin Hall conductance, and robust corner states. Quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect, where electrons with opposite spin channels are deflected to opposite sides of a two-dimensional system with a quantized conductance, was believed to be characterized by a nontrivial topological index $Z_{2}$. However, spin mixing effects in realistic materials often lead to deviation of the spin Hall conductance from exact quantization. In this Letter, we present a universal symmetry indicator for diagnosing QSH effect in realistic materials, termed spin $U$(1) quasi-symmetry. Such a symmetry eliminates the first-order spin-mixing perturbation and thus protects the near-quantization of SHC, applicable to time-reversal-preserved cases with either $Z_{2}=1$ or $Z_{2}=0$, as well as time-reversal-broken scenarios. We propose that spin $U$(1) quasi-symmetry is hidden in the subspace spanned by the doublets with unquenched orbital momentum and emerges when SOC is present, which can be realized in 19 crystallographic point groups. Particularly, we identify a previous overlooked even spin Chern phase with a trivial $Z_{2}$ index as an ideal platform for achieving a near-double-quantized SHC, as exemplified by twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides and monolayer RuBr$_{3}$. In solid state systems, group representation theory is powerful in characterizing the behavior of quasiparticles, notably the energy degeneracy. While conventional group theory is effective in answering yes-or-no questions related to symmetry breaking, its application to determining the magnitude of energy splitting resulting from symmetry lowering is limited. Here, we propose a theory on quasisymmetry and near degeneracy, thereby expanding the applicability of group theory to address questions regarding large-or-small energy splitting. Defined within the degenerate subspace of an unperturbed Hamiltonian, quasisymmetries form an enlarged symmetry group eliminating the first-order splitting. This framework ensures that the magnitude of splitting arises as a second-order effect of symmetry-lowering perturbations, such as external fields and spin-orbit coupling. We systematically tabulate the quasisymmetry groups within 32 crystallographic point groups and find all the possible unitary quasisymmetry group structures regarding double degeneracy. Applying our theory to the realistic material AgLa, we predict a "quasi-Dirac semimetal" phase characterized by two tiny-gap band anticrossings., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Topological magnons have received substantial interest for their potential in both fundamental research and device applications due to their exotic uncharged yet topologically protected boundary modes. However, their understanding has been impeded by the lack of fundamental symmetry descriptions of magnetic materials, of which the spin Hamiltonians are essentially determined by the isotropic Heisenberg interaction. The corresponding magnon band structures allows for more symmetry operations with separated spin and spatial operations, forming spin space groups (SSGs), than the conventional magnetic space groups. Here we developed spin space group (SSG) theory to describe collinear magnetic configurations, identifying all the 1421 collinear SSGs and categorizing them into four types, constructing band representations for these SSGs, and providing a full tabulation of SSGs with exotic nodal topology. Our representation theory perfectly explains the band degeneracies of previous experiments and identifies new magnons beyond magnetic space groups with topological charges, including duodecuple point, octuple nodal line and charge-4 octuple point. With an efficient algorithm that diagnoses topological magnons in collinear magnets, our work offers new pathways to exploring exotic phenomena of magnonic systems, with the potential to advance the next-generation spintronic devices.

Those fundamental physical properties, such as phase transitions, Weyl fermions, and spin excitation, in all magnetic ordered materials, were ultimately believed to rely on the symmetry theory of magnetic space groups. Recently, it has come to light that a more comprehensive group, known as the spin space group (SSG), which combines separate spin and spatial operations, is necessary to fully characterize the geometry and underlying properties of magnetic ordered materials. However, the basic theory of SSG has seldom been developed. In this work, we present a systematic study of the enumeration and the representation theory of SSG. Starting from the 230 crystallographic space groups and finite translation groups with a maximum order of 8, we establish an extensive collection of over 100000 SSGs under a four-index nomenclature as well as the International notation. We then identify inequivalent SSGs specifically applicable to collinear, coplanar, and noncoplanar magnetic configurations. To facilitate the identification of SSG, we develop an online program (findspingroup.com) that can determine the SSG symmetries of any magnetic ordered crystals. Moreover, we derive the irreducible co-representations of the little group in momentum space within the SSG framework. Finally, we illustrate the SSG symmetries and physical effects beyond the framework of magnetic space groups through several representative material examples, including a well-known altermagnet RuO2, spiral spin polarization in the coplanar antiferromagnet CeAuAl3, and geometric Hall effect in the noncoplanar antiferromagnet CoNb3S6. Spin textures, i.e., the distribution of spin polarization vectors in reciprocal space, exhibit diverse patterns determined by symmetry constraints, resulting in a variety of spintronic phenomena. Here, we propose a universal theory to comprehensively describe the nature of spin textures by incorporating three symmetry flavors of reciprocal wavevector, atomic orbital and atomic site. Such approach enables us to establish a complete classification of spin textures constrained by the little co-group and predict unprecedentedly reported spin texture types, such as Zeeman-type spin splitting in antiferromagnets and quadratic spin texture. To examine the impact of atomic orbitals and sites, we predict orbital-dependent spin texture and anisotropic spin-momentum-site locking effects and corresponding material candidates validated through first-principles calculations. Our theory not only covers all possible spin textures in crystal solids described by magnetic space groups, but also introduces new possibilities for designing innovative spin textures by the coupling of multiple degrees of freedom.

The century-long development of surface sciences has witnessed the discoveries of a variety of quantum states. In the recently proposed "obstructed atomic insulators", insulators with symmetric charges pinned at virtual sites where no real atoms reside, the cleavage through these sites could lead to a set of obstructed surface states with partial occupation. Here, utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we observe spectroscopic signature of obstructed surface states in SrIn$_2$P$_2$. We find a pair of surface states originated from the pristine obstructed surface states split by a unique surface reconstruction. The upper branch is marked with a striking differential conductance peak followed by negative differential conductance, signaling its localized nature, while the lower branch is found to be highly dispersive. This pair of surface states is in consistency with our calculational results. Our finding not only demonstrates a surface quantum state induced by a new type of bulk-boundary correspondence, but also provides a platform for exploring efficient catalysts and related surface engineering., Comment: 20 Pages, 4 Figures

Spatial, momentum and energy separation of electronic spins in condensed matter systems guides the development of novel devices where spin-polarized current is generated and manipulated. Recent attention on a set of previously overlooked symmetry operations in magnetic materials leads to the emergence of a new type of spin splitting, enabling giant and momentum-dependent spin polarization of energy bands on selected antiferromagnets. Despite the ever-growing theoretical predictions, the direct spectroscopic proof of such spin splitting is still lacking. Here, we provide solid spectroscopic and computational evidence for the existence of such materials. In the noncoplanar antiferromagnet MnTe$_2$, the in-plane components of spin are found to be antisymmetric about the high-symmetry planes of the Brillouin zone, comprising a plaid-like spin texture in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state. Such an unconventional spin pattern, further found to diminish at the high-temperature paramagnetic state, stems from the intrinsic AFM order instead of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The long-sought Chern insulators that manifest quantum anomalous Hall effect are typically considered to occur solely in ferromagnets. Here, we theoretically predict the realizability of Chern insulators in antiferromagnets, of which the magnetic sublattices are connected by symmetry operators enforcing zero net moment. Our symmetry analysis provides comprehensive magnetic layer point groups that allow antiferromagnetic (AFM) Chern insulators, and reveals that in-plane magnetic configuration is required. Followed by first-principles calculations, such design principles naturally lead to two categories of material candidates, exemplified by RbCr2S4 and Mn3Sn thin films with collinear and noncollinear AFM orders, respectively. We further show that the Chern number could be tuned by slight ferromagnetic canting as an effective pivot. Our work elucidates the nature of Chern-insulator phase in AFM systems, paving a new avenue for the search and design of quantum anomalous Hall insulators with the integration of non-dissipative transport and the promising advantages of the AFM order.

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are gathering increasing attentions from both the academia and industry. The ever-growing number of UAV brings challenges for air traffic control (ATC), and thus trajectory prediction plays a vital role in ATC, especially for avoiding collisions among UAVs. However, the dynamic flight of UAV aggravates the complexity of trajectory prediction. Different with civil aviation aircrafts, the most intractable difficulty for UAV trajectory prediction depends on acquiring effective location information. Fortunately, the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) is an effective technique to help obtain positioning information. It is widely used in the civil aviation aircraft, due to its high data update frequency and low cost of corresponding ground stations construction. Hence, in this work, we consider leveraging ADS-B to help UAV trajectory prediction. However, with the ADS-B information for a UAV, it still lacks efficient mechanism to predict the UAV trajectory. It is noted that the recurrent neural network (RNN) is available for the UAV trajectory prediction, in which the long short-term memory (LSTM) is specialized in dealing with the time-series data. As above, in this work, we design a system of UAV trajectory prediction with the ADS-B information, and propose the recurrent LSTM (RLSTM) based algorithm to achieve the accurate prediction. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted by Python to evaluate the proposed algorithms, and the results show that the average trajectory prediction error is satisfied, which is in line with expectations.

The magnetic structures of MnBi2Te4(Bi2Te3)n can be manipulated by tuning the interlayer coupling via the number of Bi2Te3 spacer layers n, while the intralayer ferromagnetic (FM) exchange coupling is considered too robust to control. By applying hydrostatic pressure up to 3.5 GPa, we discover opposite responses of magnetic properties for n = 1 and 2. MnBi4Te7 stays at A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with a decreasing N\'eel temperature and an increasing saturation field. In sharp contrast, MnBi6Te10 experiences a phase transition from A-type AFM to a quasi-two-dimensional FM state with a suppressed saturation field under pressure. First-principles calculations reveal the essential role of intralayer exchange coupling from lattice compression in determining these magnetic properties. The recent discovered intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 have been met with unusual success in hosting emergent phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the axion insulator states. However, the surface-bulk correspondence of the Mn-Bi-Te family, composed by the superlattice-like MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n (n = 0, 1, 2, 3 ...) layered structure, remains intriguing but elusive. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) techniques, we unambiguously assign the two distinct surface states of MnBi4Te7 (n = 1) to the quintuple-layer (QL) Bi2Te3 termination and the septuple-layer (SL) MnBi2Te4 termination, respectively. A comparison of the experimental observations with theoretical calculations reveals the diverging topological behaviors, especially the hybridization effect between magnetic and nonmagnetic layers, on the two terminations: a gap on the QL termination originating from the topological surface states of the QL hybridizing with the bands of the beneath SL, and a gapless Dirac-cone band structure on the SL termination with time-reversal symmetry. The quasi-particle interference patterns further confirm the topological nature of the surface states for both terminations, continuing far above the Fermi energy. The QL termination carries a spin-helical Dirac state with hexagonal warping, while at the SL termination, a strongly canted helical state from the surface lies between a pair of Rashba-split states from its neighboring layer. Our work elucidates an unprecedented hybridization effect between the building blocks of the topological surface states, and also reveals the termination-dependent time-reversal symmetry breaking in a magnetic topological insulator, rendering an ideal platform to realize the half-integer quantum Hall effect and relevant quantum phenomena., Comment: 22 Pages, 4 Figures

The search for materials to support the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect (QAHE) have recently centered on intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) including MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ or heterostructures made up of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$. While MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is itself a MTI, most recent ARPES experiments indicate that the surface states on this material lack the mass gap that is expected from the magnetism-induced time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), with the absence of this mass gap likely due to surface magnetic disorder. Here, utilizing small-spot ARPES scanned across the surfaces of MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, we show the presence of large mass gaps (~ 100 meV scale) on both of these materials when the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ surfaces are buried below one layer of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ that apparently protects the magnetic order, but not when the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ surfaces are exposed at the surface or are buried below two Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. This makes both MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ excellent candidates for supporting the QAHE, especially if bulk devices can be fabricated with a single continuous Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layer at the surface., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic topological insulators (TI) provide an important material platform to explore quantum phenomena such as quantized anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and Majorana modes, etc. Their successful material realization is thus essential for our fundamental understanding and potential technical revolutions. By realizing a bulk van der Waals material MnBi4Te7 with alternating septuple [MnBi2Te4] and quintuple [Bi2Te3] layers, we show that it is ferromagnetic in plane but antiferromagnetic along the c axis with an out-of-plane saturation field of ~ 0.22 T at 2 K. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations further demonstrate that MnBi4Te7 is a Z2 antiferromagnetic TI with two types of surface states associated with the [MnBi2Te4] or [Bi2Te3] termination, respectively. Additionally, its superlattice nature may make various heterostructures of [MnBi2Te4] and [Bi2Te3] layers possible by exfoliation. Therefore, the low saturation field and the superlattice nature of MnBi4Te7 make it an ideal system to investigate rich emergent phenomena., Comment: 5 figures
