3. An Adam-enhanced Particle Swarm Optimizer for Latent Factor Analysis

Abstract

Digging out the latent information from large-scale incomplete matrices is a key issue with challenges. The Latent Factor Analysis (LFA) model has been investigated in depth to an alyze the latent information. Recently, Swarm Intelligence-related LFA models have been proposed and adopted widely to improve the optimization process of LFA with high efficiency, i.e., the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-LFA model. However, the hyper-parameters of the PSO-LFA model have to tune manually, which is inconvenient for widely adoption and limits the learning rate as a fixed value. To address this issue, we propose an Adam-enhanced Hierarchical PSO-LFA model, which refines the latent factors with a sequential Adam-adjusting hyper-parameters PSO algorithm. First, we design the Adam incremental vector for a particle and construct the Adam-enhanced evolution process for particles. Second, we refine all the latent factors of the target matrix sequentially with our proposed Adam-enhanced PSO's process. The experimental results on four real datasets demonstrate that our proposed model achieves higher prediction accuracy with its peers.

Abstract

High-Dimensional and Incomplete matrices, which usually contain a large amount of valuable latent information, can be well represented by a Latent Factor Analysis model. The performance of an LFA model heavily rely on its optimization process. Thereby, some prior studies employ the Particle Swarm Optimization to enhance an LFA model's optimization process. However, the particles within the swarm follow the static evolution paths and only share the global best information, which limits the particles' searching area to cause sub-optimum issue. To address this issue, this paper proposes a Dynamic-neighbor-cooperated Hierarchical PSO-enhanced LFA model with two-fold main ideas. First is the neighbor-cooperated strategy, which enhances the randomly chosen neighbor's velocity for particles' evolution. Second is the dynamic hyper-parameter tunning. Extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets are conducted to evaluate the proposed DHPL model. The results substantiate that DHPL achieves a higher accuracy without hyper-parameters tunning than the existing PSO-incorporated LFA models in representing an HDI matrix.

5. An Adam-adjusting-antennae BAS Algorithm for Refining Latent Factors

Abstract

Extracting the latent information in high-dimensional and incomplete matrices is an important and challenging issue. The Latent Factor Analysis (LFA) model can well handle the high-dimensional matrices analysis. Recently, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-incorporated LFA models have been proposed to tune the hyper-parameters adaptively with high efficiency. However, the incorporation of PSO causes the premature problem. To address this issue, we propose a sequential Adam-adjusting-antennae BAS (A2BAS) optimization algorithm, which refines the latent factors obtained by the PSO-incorporated LFA model. The A2BAS algorithm consists of two sub-algorithms. First, we design an improved BAS algorithm which adjusts beetles' antennae and step-size with Adam; Second, we implement the improved BAS algorithm to optimize all the row and column latent factors sequentially. With experimental results on two real high-dimensional matrices, we demonstrate that our algorithm can effectively solve the premature convergence issue.

Abstract

Fermented mare's milk (koumiss), a traditional Central Asian dairy product derived from fermented mare's milk, is renowned for its unique sour taste and texture. It has long been consumed by nomadic tribes for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the protective effects of koumiss against alcohol-induced harm across behavioral, hematological, gastrointestinal, hepatic, and reproductive dimensions using a mouse model. Optimal intoxicating doses of alcohol and koumiss doses were determined, and their effects were explored through sleep tests and blood indicator measurements. Pretreatment with koumiss delayed inebriation, accelerated sobering, and reduced mortality in mice, mitigating alcohol's impact on blood ethanol levels and various physiological parameters. Histopathological and molecular analyses further confirmed koumiss's protective role against alcohol-induced damage in the liver, stomach, small intestine, and reproductive system. Transcriptomic studies on reproductive damage indicated that koumiss exerts its benefits by influencing mitochondrial and ribosomal functions and also shows promise in mitigating alcohol's effects on the reproductive system. In summary, koumiss emerges as a potential natural agent for protection against alcohol-induced harm, opening avenues for future research in this field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

29. Effects of cadmium exposure on tissue structure, antioxidant enzyme activity, serum biochemical indices and gene expression in the liver of juvenile largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)

Abstract

This study aimed to understand the effect of various levels of waterborne cadmium exposure and associated integrated response in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). The experimental fish were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group H (high concentration group): 0.25 mg/L of water (100% of the LC~50~); Group M (medium concentration group): 0.01 mg/L of water (50% of the LC~50~); group L (low concentration group): 0.05 mg/L of water (12.5% of the LC~50~) and group C (control). Experimental fish in group C (control group) were cultured in cadmium (Cd)-free tap water. After 28 days of Cd exposure, the gill and liver tissues were collected for histological analysis and antioxidant enzyme activities assay. Serum biochemical indices and the expression levels of HSP70, HSP90, Cyp1a, and MT in the liver were assayed. Results indicated Cd exposure in group H could significantly damage the gill and liver. The SOD activity of gill and liver exhibited an increasing trend with Cd concentrations increasing, and SOD activities increased significantly in group M compared to that of group C. Still, SOD activity significantly decreased in group H. MDA content increased significantly in both the gill and liver, while T-AOC activities were not significantly different in both the gill and liver. By comparison with group C, the activities of ALT and AST in serum were significantly increased in group M and group H; the contents of ALB and TP significantly decreased in group M and group H except for the content slightly increased in the group L; the contents of GLU, TG, and TC did not show significant changes in the group L and the group M, but increased significantly in the group H. The expression levels of HSP70 and HSP90 in the liver exhibited the highest level in group M, whereas the expression levels of MT and Cyp1a were highest in groups H and L, respectively. Abstract

Background: Lipid droplets (LDs) are important multifunctional organelles responsible for lipid metabolism of postmortem muscle. However, the dynamics in their building blocks (cores and layers) and phosphorylation of lipid droplet‐related proteins (LDRPs) regulating meat lipolysis remain unknown at salt‐stimulated conditions. Results: LDRPs extracted from cured porcine biceps femoris (1% and 3% salt) were subjected to label‐free quantitative phosphoproteomic analysis and LDs morphological validation. Results indicated that 3% salt curing significantly decreased triglyceride (TG) content with increase in glycerol and decrease in LDs fluorescence compared to 1% salt curing. Comparative phosphoproteomics showed that there were significant changes in phosphorylation at 386 sites on 174 LDRPs between assayed groups (P < 0.05). These differential proteins were mainly involved in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Curing of 3% salt induced more site‐specific phosphorylation of perilipin 1 (PLIN1, at Ser81) and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL, at Ser399) than 1%, whereas the phosphorylation (at Ser600) of hormone‐sensitive lipase (HSL) was up‐regulated. Ultrastructure imaging showed that LDs were mostly associated with mitochondria, and the average diameter of LDs decreased from 2.34 μm (1% salt) to 1.73 μm (3% salt). Conclusion: Phosphoproteomics unraveled salt‐stimulated LDRPs phosphorylation of cured porcine meat provoked intensified lipolysis. Curing of 3% salt allowed an enhanced lipolysis than 1% by up‐regulating the phosphorylation sites of LDRPs and recruited lipases. The visible splitting of LDs, together with sarcoplasmic disorganization, supported the lipolysis robustness following 3% salt curing. Abstract

Background. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has been reported to be beneficial for patients with acute respiratory failure in intensive care unit (ICU); however, factors that influence the clinical outcome of NIV were unclarified. We aim to determine the factors that predict the failure of NIV in critically ill patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF). Setting. Adult mixed ICU in a medical university affiliated hospital. Patients and Methods. A retrospective clinical study using data from critical adult patients with initial NIV admitted to ICU in the period August 2016 to November 2017. Failure of NIV was regarded as patients needing invasive ventilation. Logistic regression was employed to determine the risk factor(s) for NIV, and a predictive model for NIV outcome was set up using risk factors. Results. Of 101 included patients, 50 were unsuccessful. Although more than 20 variables were associated with NIV failure, multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that only ideal body weight (IBW) (OR 1.110 (95%1.027–1.201), P=0.009), the maximal heart rate during NIV period (HR-MAX) (OR 1.024 (1.004–1.046), P=0.021), the minimal respiratory rate during NIV period (RR-MIN) (OR 1.198(1.051–1.365), P=0.007), and the highest body temperature during NIV period (T-MAX) (OR 1.838(1.038–3.252), P=0.037) were independent risk factors for NIV failure. We set up a predictive model based on these independent risk factors, whose area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was 0.783 (95% CI: 0.676–0.899, P<0.001), and the sensitivity and specificity of model were 68.75% and 71.43%, respectively, with the optimal cut-off value of 0.4863. Conclusion. IBW, HR-MAX, RR-MIN, and T-MAX were associated with NIV failure in patients with ARF. A predictive model based on the risk factors could help to discriminate patients who are vulnerable to NIV failure.

47. Effects of dietary fish meal replacement by Periplaneta americanameal on growth, metabolism, intestinal health and resistance against Aeromonas hydrophilaof Micropterus salmoides

Abstract

An 8-week culture experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of partial replacement of fish meal (FM) with Periplaneta americanameal (PAM) on growth performance, body composition, serum biochemical parameters, intestinal health and resistance against Aeromonas hydrophilaof largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides. A total of 450 healthy largemouth bass with an initial body weight (IBW) of 14.55±0.09 g were randomly divided into five groups. Five experimental diets were prepared by replacing 0 % (P0), 15 % (P15), 30 % (P30), 45 % (P45) and 60 % (P60) of the FM in the basal diet with PAM, respectively. The results showed that final body weight (FBW), weight gain rate (WGR), and specific growth rate (SGR) were no significant difference in P15 and P30 compared with the control group (P> 0.05). Crude protein of whole fish body was significantly increased and crude lipid was significantly decreased in all PAM groups (P< 0.05). In the P30, the antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly higher than those in the control and other experimental groups, and malondialdehyde (MDA) was significantly decreased (P< 0.05). The activities of α-amylase and pepsin increased significantly in P15 and P30 and decreased significantly in P45 and P60 (P< 0.05). Lipase was significantly increased in all groups except P15 than in the control group (P< 0.05). There were no significant differences in villus height (VH), crypt depth (CD), and muscle thickness (MT) among all groups (P> 0.05), but villus width (VW) was significantly decreased in P45 and P60 (P< 0.05). The relative expression of IL-10and TGF-β1were first up-regulated and then down-regulated, while IL-8was opposite (P< 0.05). The relative expression of Casp3, Casp9and IFN-γwere significantly up-regulated in P45 and P60 (P< 0.05). After injecting A. hydrophila, all groups of largemouth bass experienced mortality, but cumulative mortality was lowest in the P30. In conclusion, PAM can partially replace FM in the diet of juvenile largemouth bass. The replacement of no more than 30 % is unlikely to adversely affect growth performance, and can increase the crude protein content of the whole fish body, and is beneficial to intestinal health.
