12. Defying the normal: biopolitics and the rising bodies in the time of Covid-19

Abstract

This article discusses the biopolitics of the coronavirus pandemic practiced on both human and non-human animals. I begin by introducing the idea of biopolitics and othering. I then bring two animals, bats and minks, together to explain the role of biopolitics in manipulating the bodies of non-human animals. In particular, I compare the discourses surrounding both animals that frame bats as the wild and minks as the productive— the categorization of both disembodies the animals and subjects them to exploitation. I also examine the role of the environment in creating a shared vulnerability between human and non-human animals. I argue that the coronavirus pandemic is a crisis evoked by a system that profits from the use of biopolitics through the creations of dichotomies between the “normal” and the “abnormal.” To reimagine our future, we need to seek a sustainability that fosters entanglements, instead of separations, of all creatures.

Abstract

Storage and preservation techniques can play an important role in extending the shelf life of perishable foods. With consumers’ increasing awareness of environmental protection and safety, edible antibacterial packaging is highly favored because of its natural source and non-toxic nature. This paper introduces in detail the substrate materials, antibacterial agents and methods used to prepare edible antibacterial films, summarizes the application of edible antibacterial films in the food packaging field, and discusses future trends in the development of antibacterial food packaging. We hope that this review will provide a reference for reduction in white pollution and the recovery and utilization of agricultural and industrial wastes, and provide a scientific and theoretical basis for food storage and preservation.

Clinical symptoms were assessed using Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). All SNPs were typed using Agena Bioscience MassARRAY DNA mass spectrometry. Plasma concentrations of antipsychotics at week 3, 6 and 12 after treatment commence were analyzed using mass spectrometry.Results: For efficacy of atypical antipsychotics, we observed no significant difference between HTR1A rs10042486, rs6295 and positive symptom improvement, where the patients with heterozygous mutant at the rs10042486 and rs6295 locus were superior to those with wild-type or homozygous mutant genotypes on negative symptom improvement, especially at 12 weeks of follow-up when the difference between genotypes at the rs6295 locus have statistical significance (P = 0.037). For plasma concentration, we found that quetiapine plasma concentrations were significantly lower in patients with mutation-heterozygous types than in wild-type and homozygous mutation genotypes at week 6. Abstract

Electrolytic water splitting using renewable energy sources, such as solar power, provides a green and sustainable approach for hydrogen production. Anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers present substantial commercial prospects; however, the rate of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolytes is limited by the water dissociation step. In this work, we fabricated an N-doped Ni substrate for loading ultrafine Pt nanoparticles, realizing spatial decoupling of the reaction process to break the limitation of water dissociation, where the N-doped Ni substrate and Pt nanoparticles facilitate the supply of ample H* and H2 release, respectively. The prepared Pt–N–Ni/NC with extremely low Pt loading (1.0 wt%) requires only 15 and 149 mV overpotentials to reach current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm−2, respectively. When assembled into an AEM electrolyzer, the system requires a cell voltage of only 1.75 V to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm−2. Notably, the solar-driven AEM electrolyzer demonstrates a current density of 1390 mA cm−2 with a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (STH) of 8.27%. This study proposes a strategy to achieve efficient utilization and performance improvement of precious metals, promoting the development of efficient green hydrogen production. Abstract

With the rapid increase in the use of mobile devices equipped with built-in sensors, mobile crowd sensing (MCS) as a human driven perception mode came into being. Since a large number of users submit data to the cloud servers in parallel, it will not only increase the pressure on the cloud servers, but also lead to the problem of data redundancy. In order to solve this problem, this paper introduces edge computing into mobile crowd sening for collecting perception data, and proposes a group intelligence perception network data collection model based on edge computing. The data is observed and sampled at the edge node through the compressed sensing algorithm, and the compressed data is transmitted to the cloud server.Using Cl_ BP algorithm restores the compressed data in cloud server .The results show that compared with the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm (OMP), the data collection model based on edge cloud computing proposed in this paper can better solve the problem of data redundancy.

49. Development of a Patient-Specific Carotid Artery Fluid-Structure-Interaction Model

Abstract

Background: Ischemic stroke is a major cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries is an established predictor of these events. FSI shows its advantage in simulating the hemodynamic environments due to involving the multiphysics coupling of fluid dynamics and structural mechanics regulations. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to establish and demonstrate a framework, starting with the segment data extracted from CTA images and leading to patient-specific FSI modeling. Thus the results can be used to gain insights into the relationship between plaque changes over time and biomechanical stresses induced by blood flow using FSI. Method: 3D coordinates are firstly extracted from CTA scans of patients with calcified atherosclerotic plaques in their carotid arteries, sourced from the PARISK study. This data was then used to reconstruct 3D surfaces and volumes of the carotid bifurcation structure. Subsequently, the Backward Incremental method is employed to compute the initial stresses and establish the zero-pressure geometry of the vessel. Following this, FSI simulations were conducted on six carotid bifurcations to obtain preliminary results, providing an initial test of the pipeline's robustness. Morphological changes, including plaque burden, wall thickness, and calcium distance, are quantified to study plaque progression over time. The numerical simulation results provide insights into biomechanical stresses, including fluid and solid wall shear stress and von Mises stress. The simulation results are subjected to post-processing for further analysis. The results are mapped to a 2D configuration, with 1.5mm along the centerline and 45 degree per sector to study the local behavior. Result: The efficacy of the reconstruction and initial stress detection methods shows the robustness of the pipeline.
