Abstract

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available., Comment: Accepted by RAA

Abstract

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

1T/2H‐MoS2/CdS composite was effectively prepared by a two‐step hydrothermal method, which greatly improved the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride and photocatalytic cycle stability compared with pristine 1T/2H‐MoS2. The highest photodegradation efficiency of 70.8% is achieved when the molar ratio of 1T/2H‐MoS2 to cadmium sulfide is 1:4. The capture experiment indicates that hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) and superoxide radical (⋅O2−) play a role in the photocatalytic degradation process. A Z‐type heterojunction may be formed on the 1T/2H‐MoS2/CdS composite based on a series of analyses, which improves the photocatalytic performance effectively via expanding the range of light response and promoting the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. This work provides an alternative to constructing novel Z‐scheme photocatalysts with high performance in the absence of noble metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Structural, magnetic, and transport properties of polycrystalline Mn3Ga0.8Ge0.2 alloy.

Abstract

DO19-ordered Mn3Ga gained much attention recently due to their potential application in spintronic devices. However, there still remain several challenges to overcome before their practical application. We have studied the structural, magnetic, and transport properties of polycrystalline Mn3Ga0.8Ge0.2. It was found that Ge-doped Mn3Ga ingot undergoes a spin reorientation transition from a coplanar antiferromagnetic to a noncoplanar configuration of Mn moments at around 200 K, accompanied by the competition among magnetocrystalline anisotropy, ferromagnetic interaction, and antiferromagnetic coupling. Compared with other reports on polycrystalline Mn3Ga, the Mn3Ga0.8Ge0.2 alloy in our work has a higher spin reorientation transition temperature, which is related to the lattice distortion caused by Ge doping. The anomalous Hall effect can be observed from 10 to 350 K and the Hall resistivity at room temperature is 0.641 μΩ cm. An apparent topological Hall effect (THE) was observed simultaneously in the hexagonal non-collinear polycrystalline Mn3Ga0.8Ge0.2 ingots below 200 K. The origin of the present THE is attributed to the non-collinear triangular magnetic configuration with slight distortion. The maximum value of topological Hall resistivity can reach a value of about 0.242 μΩ cm at 120 K. Our work provides an approach for topological spintronics applications using Mn3X-based alloys. Abstract

We analyze various possible interpretations of the narrow state $D_{sJ}^+(2632)$ observed by SELEX Collaboration recently, which lies above threshold and has abnormal decay pattern. These interpretations include: (1) several versions of tetraquarks; (2) conventional $c\bar s$ meson such as the first radial excitation of $D_s(2112)$ with abnormally large SU(3) symmetry breaking; (3) conventional $c\bar s$ meson with abnormally large $\eta_1$ coupling; (4) heavy hybrid meson. We discuss the physical implications of each interpretation. For example, if the existence of $D_{sJ}^+(2632)$ is confirmed as the first radial excitation of $D_s(2112)$ by other experiments, it will be helpful to look for (1) its SU(3) flavor partners $D_{J}^{0,+}(2530)$; (2) its B-meson analogues $B_{J}^{0,+}(5840), B_{sJ}^+(5940)$; (3) S-wave two pion decay modes.

14. $D_{sJ}^+(2632)$: An Excellent Candidate of Tetraquarks

Abstract

We analyze various possible interpretations of the narrow state $D_{sJ}(2632)$ which lies 100 MeV above threshold. This interesting state decays mainly into $D_s \eta$ instead of $D^0 K^+$. If this relative branching ratio is further confirmed by other experimental groups, we point out that the identification of $D_{sJ}(2632)$ either as a $c\bar s$ state or more generally as a ${\bf {\bar 3}}$ state in the $SU(3)_F$ representation is probably problematic. Instead, such an anomalous decay pattern strongly indicates $D_{sJ}(2632)$ is a four quark state in the $SU(3)_F$ ${\bf 15}$ representation with the quark content ${1\over 2\sqrt{2}} (ds\bar{d}+sd\bar{d}+su\bar{u}+us\bar{u}-2ss\bar{s})\bar{c}$. We discuss its partners in the same multiplet, and the similar four-quark states composed of a bottom quark $B_{sJ}^0(5832)$. Experimental searches of other members especially those exotic ones are strongly called for.

Abstract

Using the SU(3) flavor symmetry, we construct the chiral Lagrangians for the light and heavy pentaquarks. The correction from the nonzero quark is taken into account perturbatively. We derive the Gell-Mann$-$Okubo type relations for various pentaquark multiplet masses and Coleman-Glashow relations for anti-sextet heavy pentaquark magnetic moments. We study possible decays of pentaquarks into conventional hadrons. We also study the interactions between and within various pentaquark multiplets and derive their coupling constants in the symmetry limit. Possible kinematically allowed pionic decay modes are pointed out.

Abstract

If Jaffe and Wilczek's diquark picture for $\Theta_5$ pentaquark is correct, there should also exist a $SU_F$(3) pentaquark octet and singlet with no orbital excitation between the diquark pair, hence $J^P={1/2}^-$. These states are lighter than the $\Theta_5$ anti-decuplet and lie close to the orbitally excited (L=1) three-quark states in the conventional quark model. We calculate their masses and magnetic moments and discuss their possible strong decays using the chiral Lagrangian formalism. Among them two pentaquarks with nucleon quantum numbers may be narrow. Selection rules of strong decays are derived. We propose the experimental search of these nine additional $J^P={1/2}^-$ baryon states. Especially there are two additional $J^P={1/2}^-$ $\Lambda$ baryons around $\Lambda (1405)$. We also discuss the interesting possibility of interpreting $\Lambda (1405)$ as a pentaquark. The presence of these additional states will provide strong support of the diquark picture for the pentaquarks. If future experimental searches fail, one has to re-evaluate the relevance of this picture for the pentaquarks.

Abstract

We construct the spin-flavor wave functions of the possible heavy pentaquarks containing an anti-charm or anti-bottom quark using various clustered quark models. Then we estimate the masses and magnetic moments of the $J^P={1\over 2}^+$ or ${3\over 2}^+$ heavy pentaquarks. We emphasize the difference in the predictions of these models. Future experimental searches at BESIII, CLEOc, BELLE, and LEP may find these interesting states.

Abstract

Soil contamination is one of the main threats to ecosystem health and sustainability. Yet little is known about the extent to which soil contaminants differ between urban greenspaces and natural ecosystems. Here we show that urban greenspaces and adjacent natural areas (i.e., natural/semi-natural ecosystems) shared similar levels of multiple soil contaminants (metal(loid)s, pesticides, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes) across the globe. We reveal that human influence explained many forms of soil contamination worldwide. Socio-economic factors were integral to explaining the occurrence of soil contaminants worldwide. We further show that increased levels of multiple soil contaminants were linked with changes in microbial traits including genes associated with environmental stress resistance, nutrient cycling, and pathogenesis. Taken together, our work demonstrates that human-driven soil contamination in nearby natural areas mirrors that in urban greenspaces globally, and highlights that soil contaminants have the potential to cause dire consequences for ecosystem sustainability and human wellbeing.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Adult stem cell senescence and exhaustion are important drivers of organismal age. Restored stem cell self-renewal has revealed novel therapeutic targets for decreasing the incidence of age-associated diseases (AADs) and prolonging the human health span. Transient ectopic expression of the reprogramming factors Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4 and c-Myc (collectively known as OSKM) in somatic cells can induce partial cellular reprogramming and effectively ameliorate their age-associated hallmarks. However, how this form of rejuvenation is applied to senescent stem cells remains unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Integrin-α6highCD71high epidermal stem cells (ESCs) with low self-renewal ability were sorted by flow cytometry and then treated by the interrupted reprogramming induced by transient expression of OSKM. The ability of secondary clones’ generation and self-proliferation in vitro, as well as stem cell marker p63, were detected to determine their self-renewal ability. Besides, gene and protein of epidermal cell markers were detected to determine whether their cell identities were retained. Finally, DNA methylation age (eAge) and DNA dehydroxymethylase/methyltransferase were analyzed to explore the alternation of their global DNA methylation pattern during this rejuvenation. RESULTS: The partial reprogramming restored the youthful self-renewal and proliferation in senescent ESCs, including larger secondary clone generation, higher expression of stem cell marker p63 and proliferation marker Ki67, and faster proliferation speed, in each case without abolishing epithelial cellular identity. Moreover, the rejuvenation of adult stem cells could be maintained for 2 weeks after reprogramming factor withdrawal, which was more stable than that of differentiated somatic cells. Additionally, we found that partial reprogramming counteracted the acceleration of eAge in senescent epidermal stem cells and DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) may play a crucial role in this process. 33. The Proportion of Soil-Borne Fungal Pathogens Increases with Elevated Organic Carbon in Agricultural Soils

Abstract

Soil-borne fungal phytopathogens are important threats to soil and crop health. However, their community composition and environmental determinants remain unclear. Here, we explored the effects of agricultural fertilization regime (i.e., organic material application) on soil fungal phytopathogens, using data sets from a combination of field survey and long-term experiment. We found that soil organic carbon was the key factor that affected the diversity and relative abundance of fungal phytopathogens in agricultural soils. The dominant genera of phytopathogens including Monographella was also strongly associated with soil organic carbon. In addition, the elevated soil organic carbon enhanced the node proportion of phytopathogens and the positive interactions within the fungal community in the network. Results of the long-term experiment revealed that applications of crop straw and fresh livestock manure significantly increased the proportion of phytopathogens, which were associated with the elevated soil organic carbon. This work offers new insights into the occurrence and environmental factors of fungal phytopathogens in agricultural soils, which are fundamental to control their impacts on the soil and crop systems. IMPORTANCE Fungal phytopathogens are important threats to soil and crop health, but their community composition and environmental determinants remain unclear. We found that soil organic carbon is the key factor of the prevalence of fungal phytopathogens through a field survey, which is also supported by our long-term (6-year) experiment showing the applications of crop straw and fresh livestock manure significantly increased the proportion of fungal phytopathogens. 34. Stronger responses of soil protistan communities to legacy mercury pollution than bacterial and fungal communities in agricultural systems

Abstract

Soil pollution is an important stressor affecting biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. However, we lack a holistic understanding of how soil microbial communities respond to heavy metal pollution in agricultural ecosystems. Here, we explored the distribution patterns and inter-kingdom interactions of entire soil microbiome (including bacteria, fungi, and protists) in 47 paired paddy and upland fields along a gradient of legacy mercury (Hg) pollution. We found that the richness and composition of protistan community had stronger responses to Hg pollution than those of bacterial and fungal communities in both paddy and upland soils. Mercury polluted soils harbored less protistan phototrophs but more protistan consumers. We further revealed that long-term Hg pollution greatly increased network complexity of protistan community than that of bacterial and fungal communities, as well as intensified the interactions between protists and the other microorganisms. Moreover, our results consistently indicated that protistan communities had stronger responses to long-term Hg pollution than bacterial and fungal communities in agricultural soils based on structural equation models and random forest analyses. Our study highlights that soil protists can be used as bioindicators of Hg pollution, with important implications for the assessment of contaminated farmlands and the sustainable management of agricultural ecosystems.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the global distribution and environmental drivers of key microbial functional traits such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Soils are one of Earth's largest reservoirs of ARGs, which are integral for soil microbial competition, and have potential implications for plant and human health. Yet, their diversity and global patterns remain poorly described. Here, we analyzed 285 ARGs in soils from 1012 sites across all continents and created the first global atlas with the distributions of topsoil ARGs. RESULTS: We show that ARGs peaked in high latitude cold and boreal forests. Climatic seasonality and mobile genetic elements, associated with the transmission of antibiotic resistance, were also key drivers of their global distribution. Dominant ARGs were mainly related to multidrug resistance genes and efflux pump machineries. We further pinpointed the global hotspots of the diversity and proportions of soil ARGs. CONCLUSIONS: Together, our work provides the foundation for a better understanding of the ecology and global distribution of the environmental soil antibiotic resistome. Video Abstract.
