Abstract

The ideal shock absorber combines high stiffness with high energy absorption whilst retaining structural integrity after impact and is scalable for industrial production. So far no structure meets all of these criteria. Here, we introduce a special occurrence of plastic buckling as a design concept for mechanical metamaterials that combine all the elements required of an ideal shock absorber. By striking a balance between plastic deformation and buckling, which we term yield buckling, these metamaterials exhibit sequential, maximally dissipative collapse combined with high strength and the preservation of structural integrity. Unlike existing structures, this design paradigm is applicable to all elastoplastic materials at any length scale and hence will lead to a new generation of shock absorbers with enhanced safety and sustainabilty in a myriad of high-tech applications.

6. ONCache: A Cache-Based Low-Overhead Container Overlay Network

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed a widespread adoption of containers. While containers simplify and accelerate application development, existing container network technologies either incur significant overhead, which hurts performance for distributed applications, or lose flexibility or compatibility, which hinders the widespread deployment in production. We carefully analyze the kernel data path of an overlay network, quantifying the time consumed by each segment of the data path and identifying the \emph{extra overhead} in an overlay network compared to bare metal. We observe that this extra overhead generates repetitive results among packets, which inspires us to introduce caches within an overlay network. We design and implement ONCache (\textbf{O}verlay \textbf{N}etwork \textbf{Cache}), a cache-based container overlay network, to eliminate the extra overhead while maintaining flexibility and compatibility. We implement ONCache using the extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) with only 524 lines of code, and integrate it as a plugin of Antrea. With ONCache, containers attain networking performance akin to that of bare metal. Compared to the standard overlay networks, ONCache improves throughput and request-response transaction rate by 12\% and 36\% for TCP (20\% and 34\% for UDP), respectively, while significantly reducing per-packet CPU overhead. Popular distributed applications also benefit from ONCache.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with pulsating waves for multi-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations in spatially periodic media. First, assuming the existence of pulsating waves connecting two linearly stable steady states, we study the continuity of wave speeds with respect to the direction of propagation. The continuity was proved in [15] under the extra condition that the speeds are nonzero in all directions. Here, we revisit this continuity result without the extra condition. Secondly, we provide some sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of pulsating waves in rapidly oscillating media, which allow the equations to have multiple stable steady states.

Abstract

Abstract: Climate change is expected to profoundly affect key food production sectors, including fisheries and agriculture. However, the potential impacts of climate change on these sectors are rarely considered jointly, and when they are, it is often at a national scale, which can mask substantial variability in how communities will be affected. Here, we combine socioeconomic surveys and intersectoral multi-model simulation outputs to conduct a sub-national analysis of the potential impacts of climate change on fisheries and agriculture in 72 coastal communities across five Indo-Pacific countries. Our study reveals three key findings: First, we find that the overall potential losses to fisheries is higher than potential losses to agriculture, but there is substantial within-country variability. Second, while more than two-thirds of locations will bear a double burden of potential losses to both fisheries and agriculture simultaneously, mitigation could reduce the proportion of places facing a double burden. Third, lower socioeconomic status communities are more likely to experience potential impacts than higher socioeconomic status communities.

Our study reveals three key findings: First, overall potential losses to fisheries are higher than potential losses to agriculture. Second, while most locations (> 2/3) will experience potential losses to both fisheries and agriculture simultaneously, climate change mitigation could reduce the proportion of places facing that double burden. Third, potential impacts are more likely in communities with lower socioeconomic status.
