This paper investigates the potential of multipath exploitation for enhancing target detection in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. The study aims to improve target detection performance by harnessing the diversity gain in the delay-Doppler domain. We propose a weighted generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector that effectively leverages the multipath propagation between the base station (BS) and the target. To further enhance detection accuracy, a joint optimization framework is developed for subcarrier power allocation at the transmitter and weight coefficients of the GLRT detector. The objective is to maximize the probability of target detection while satisfying constraints on total transmit power and the communication receiver's signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). An iterative algorithm based on the majorization-minimization (MM) method is employed to address the resulting non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm and confirm the benefits of multipath exploitation for target detection in OFDM-ISAC systems under multipath-rich environments.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has emerged as a transformative technology for 6G networks, enabling the seamless integration of communication and sensing functionalities. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), with their capability to adaptively reconfigure the radio environment, have shown significant potential in enhancing communication quality and enabling advanced cooperative sensing. This paper investigates a multi-RIS-assisted ISAC system and introduces a novel multi-perspective observation framework that leverages the diversity of multiple observation paths, each exhibiting distinct spatial, delay, and Doppler characteristics for both target and clutter. The proposed framework integrates symbol-level precoding (SLP) and space-time adaptive processing (STAP) to fully exploit the benefits of multi-perspective observations, enabling superior target-clutter separation and significantly improving detection accuracy. The objective is to jointly design the transmit waveform, reflection coefficients of multiple active RISs, and spatial-temporal receive filters to maximize the radar output signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratio (SCNR) for target detection, while ensuring the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of communication users. To address the resulting non-convex optimization problem, an effective iterative algorithm is developed, combining fractional programming (FP), majorization-minimization (MM), and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). In contrast to conventional RIS, the scattering matrix of a non-reciprocal RIS (NR-RIS) is non-symmetric, leading to differences in the uplink and the downlink components of NR-RIS cascaded channels. In this paper, a physically-consistent device model is proposed in which an NR-RIS is composed of multiple groups of two-port elements inter-connected by non-reciprocal devices. The resulting non-reciprocal scattering matrix is derived for various cases including two-element groups connected with isolators or gyrators, and general three-element groups connected via circulators. Signal models are given for NR-RIS operating in either reflecting-only or simultaneously transmitting and reflecting modes. The problem of NR-RIS design for non-reciprocal beamsteering is formulated for three-element circulator implementations, and numerical results confirm that non-reciprocal beamsteering can be achieved with minimal sidelobe power. This paper presents a novel parametric scattering model (PSM) for sensing extended targets in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. The PSM addresses the limitations of traditional models by efficiently capturing the target's angular characteristics through a compact set of key parameters, including the central angle and angular spread, enabling efficient optimization. Based on the PSM, we first derive the Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB) for parameter estimation and then propose a beamforming design algorithm to minimize the CRB while meeting both communication signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and power constraints. By integrating the PSM into the beamforming optimization process, the proposed framework achieves superior CRB performance while balancing the tradeoff between sensing accuracy and communication quality. In this paper, we explore cooperative sensing and communication within cell-free integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. Specifically, multiple transmit access points (APs) collaboratively serve multiple communication users while simultaneously illuminating a potential target, with a separate sensing AP dedicated to collecting echo signals for target detection. To improve the performance of identifying a moving target in the presence of strong interference originating from transmit APs, we employ the space-time adaptive processing (STAP) technique and jointly optimize the transmit/receive beamforming. Our goal is to maximize the radar output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), subject to the communication SINR requirements and the power budget. Integrated sensing and communication has been identified as an enabling technology for forthcoming wireless networks. In an effort to achieve an improved performance trade-off between multiuser communications and radar sensing, this paper considers a dynamically-partitioned antenna array architecture for monostatic ISAC systems, in which each element of the array at the base station can function as either a transmit or receive antenna. To fully exploit the available spatial degrees of freedom for both communication and sensing functions, we jointly design the partitioning of the array between transmit and receive antennas together with the transmit beamforming in order to minimize the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation error, while satisfying constraints on the communication signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and the transmit power budget. An alternating algorithm based on Dinkelbach's transform, the alternative direction method of multipliers, and majorization-minimization is developed to solve the resulting complicated optimization problem. To reduce the computational complexity, we also present a heuristic three-step strategy that optimizes the transmit beamforming after determining the antenna partitioning. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) utilizes the movement of the radar antenna over a specific area of interest to achieve higher spatial resolution imaging. In this paper, we aim to investigate the realization of SAR imaging for a stationary radar system with the assistance of active reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). As the UAV moves along the stationary trajectory, the ARIS can not only build a high-quality virtual line-of-sight (LoS) propagation path, but its mobility can also effectively create a much larger virtual aperture, which can be utilized to realize a SAR system. In this paper, we first present a range-Doppler (RD) imaging algorithm to obtain imaging results for the proposed ARIS-empowered SAR system. Then, to further improve the SAR imaging performance, we attempt to optimize the reflection coefficients of ARIS to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the stationary radar receiver under the constraints of ARIS maximum power and amplification factor. An effective algorithm based on fractional programming (FP) and majorization minimization (MM) methods is developed to solve the resulting non-convex problem. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of ARIS-assisted SAR imaging and our proposed RD imaging and ARIS optimization algorithms.

This paper focuses on precoding design in multi-antenna systems with improper Gaussian interference (IGI), characterized by correlated real and imaginary parts. We first study block level precoding (BLP) and symbol level precoding (SLP) assuming the receivers apply a pre-whitening filter to decorrelate and normalize the IGI. We then shift to the scenario where the base station (BS) incorporates the IGI statistics in the SLP design, which allows the receivers to employ a standard detection algorithm without pre-whitenting. Finally we address the case where the channel and statistics of the IGI are unknown, and we formulate robust BLP and SLP designs that minimize the worst case performance in such settings. Interestingly, we show that for BLP, the worst-case IGI is in fact proper, while for SLP the worst case occurs when the interference signal is maximally improper, with fully correlated real and imaginary parts. Extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) is a key candidate technology for the sixth generation (6G) mobile networks. Nevertheless, using substantial numbers of antennas to transmit high-frequency signals in ELAA systems significantly exacerbates the near-field effect. Unfortunately, traditional hybrid beamforming schemes are highly vulnerable to ELAA near-field communications. To effectively mitigate severe near-field effect, we propose a novel dynamic hybrid beamforming architecture for ELAA systems, in which each antenna is either adaptively connected to one radio frequency (RF) chain for signal transmission or deactivated for power saving. For the case that instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is available during each channel coherence time, a real-time dynamic hybrid beamforming design is developed to maximize the achievable sum rate under the constraints of the constant modulus of phase-shifters (PSs), non-overlapping dynamic connection network and total transmit power. When instantaneous CSI cannot be easily obtained in real-time, we propose a two-timescale dynamic hybrid beamforming design, which optimizes analog beamformer in long-timescale and digital beamformer in short-timescale, with the goal of maximizing ergodic sum-rate under the same constraints. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key enabling technique for future wireless networks owing to its efficient hardware and spectrum utilization. In this paper, we focus on dual-functional waveform design for a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) ISAC system, which is considered to be a promising solution for practical deployment. Since the dual-functional waveform carries communication information, its random nature leads to high range-Doppler sidelobes in the ambiguity function, which in turn degrades radar sensing performance. To suppress range-Doppler sidelobes, we propose a novel symbol-level precoding (SLP) based waveform design for MIMO-OFDM ISAC systems by fully exploiting the temporal degrees of freedom (DoFs). Our goal is to minimize the range-Doppler integrated sidelobe level (ISL) while satisfying the constraints of target illumination power, multi-user communication quality of service (QoS), and constant-modulus transmission. To solve the resulting non-convex waveform design problem, we develop an efficient algorithm using the majorization-minimization (MM) and alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM) methods. Simulation results show that the proposed waveform has significantly reduced range-Doppler sidelobes compared with signals designed only for communications and other baselines. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems are typically deployed in multipath environments, which is usually deemed as a challenging issue for wireless communications. However, the multipath propagation can also provide extra illumination and observation perspectives for radar sensing, which offers spatial diversity gain for detecting targets with spatial radar cross-section (RCS) fluctuations. In this letter, we propose to utilize reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in ISAC systems to provide high-quality and controllable multipath propagation for improving the performance of fluctuating target detection and simultaneously enhancing the quality of communication services. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is an encouraging wireless technology which can simultaneously perform both radar and communication functionalities by sharing the same transmit waveform, spectral resource, and hardware platform. Recently emerged symbol-level precoding (SLP) technique exhibits advancement in ISAC systems by leveraging the waveform design degrees of freedom (DoFs) in both temporal and spatial domains. However, traditional SLP-based ISAC systems are designed in a modular paradigm, which potentially limits the overall performance of communication and radar sensing. The high complexity of existing SLP design algorithms is another issue that hurdles the practical deployment. To break through the bottleneck of these approaches, in this paper we propose an end-to-end approach to jointly design the SLP-based dual-functional transmitter and receivers of communication and radar sensing. In particular, we aim to utilize deep learning-based methods to minimize the symbol error rate (SER) of communication users, maximize the detection probability, and minimize the root mean square error (RMSE) of the target angle estimation. Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) networks and a long short term memory (LSTM) network are respectively applied to the transmitter, communication users and radar receiver. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) have been proposed as a revolutionary technology with the potential to address several critical requirements of 6G communication systems. Despite its powerful ability for radio environment reconfiguration, the ``double fading'' effect constricts the practical system performance enhancements due to the significant path loss. A new active RIS architecture has been recently proposed to overcome this challenge. However, existing active RIS studies rely on an ideal amplification model without considering the practical hardware limitation of amplifiers, which may cause performance degradation using such inaccurate active RIS modeling. Motivated by this fact, in this paper we first investigate the amplification principle of typical active RIS and propose a more accurate amplification model based on amplifier hardware characteristics. Then, based on the new amplification model, we propose a novel joint transmit beamforming and RIS reflection beamforming design considering the incident signal power on practical active RIS for multiuser multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is widely recognized as a pivotal enabling technique for the advancement of future wireless networks. This paper aims to efficiently exploit the inherent sparsity of echo signals for the multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based ISAC system. A novel joint receive echo processing and transmit beamforming design is presented to achieve this goal. Specifically, we first propose a compressive sensing (CS)-assisted estimation approach to facilitate ISAC receive echo processing, which can not only enable accurate recovery of target information, but also allow substantial reduction in the number of sensing subcarriers to be sampled and processed. Then, based on the proposed CS-assisted processing method, the associated transmit beamforming design is formulated with the objective of maximizing the sum-rate of multiuser communications while satisfying the transmit power budget and ensuring the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the designated sensing subcarriers. The utilization of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology has the potential to enhance the communication performance of road side units (RSUs) through the active sensing of target vehicles. Furthermore, installing a simultaneous transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) on the target vehicle can provide an extra boost to the reflection of the echo signal, thereby improving the communication quality for in-vehicle users. However, the design of this target-mounted STARS system exhibits significant challenges, such as limited information sharing and distributed STARS control. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) framework to tackle the challenges of joint sensing and communication optimization in the considered target-mounted STARS assisted vehicle networks. By deploying agents on both RSU and vehicle, the MADRL framework enables RSU and vehicle to perform beam prediction and STARS pre-configuration using their respective local information. To ensure efficient and stable learning for continuous decision-making, we employ the multi-agent soft actor critic (MASAC) algorithm and the multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) algorithm on the proposed MADRL framework. Extensive experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our proposed MADRL framework in improving both sensing and communication performance through the utilization of target-mounted STARS. Finally, we conduct a comparative analysis and comparison of the two proposed algorithms under various environmental conditions.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), which simultaneously performs sensing and communication functions within a shared frequency band and hardware platform, has emerged as a promising technology for future wireless systems. Nevertheless, the weak echo signal received by the low-sensitivity ISAC receiver significantly constrains sensing performance in scenarios involving obstructed targets. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is emerging as a key technique for next-generation wireless systems. In order to expedite the practical implementation of ISAC in pervasive mobile networks, it is crucial to have widely deployed base stations with radar sensing capabilities. Thus, the utilization of standardized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) hardware architectures and waveforms is pivotal for realizing seamless integration of effective communication and sensing functionalities. In this paper, we introduce a novel joint angle-range-velocity estimation algorithm for MIMO-OFDM ISAC systems. This approach exclusively depends on the format of conventional MIMO-OFDM waveforms that are widely adopted in wireless communications. Specifically, the angle-range-velocity information of potential targets is jointly extracted by utilizing all the received echo signals within a coherent processing interval (CPI). The proposed joint estimation algorithm can achieve larger signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) processing gains and higher resolution by fully exploiting the echo signals and jointly estimating the angle-range-velocity information. A theoretical analysis for maximum unambiguous range, resolution, and SNR processing gains is provided to verify the advantages of the proposed joint estimation algorithm. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a promising technology in future wireless systems owing to its efficient hardware and spectrum utilization. In specific, we aim to design MIMO-OFDM dual-function waveform to minimize its integrated sidelobe level (ISL) while satisfying the quality of service (QoS) requirements of multi-user communications and the transmit power constraint. To achieve a lower ISL, the symbol-level precoding (SLP) technique is employed to fully exploit the degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the waveform design in both temporal and spatial domains. An efficient algorithm utilizing majorization-minimization (MM) framework is developed to solve the non-convex waveform design problem. Simulation results reveal radar ranging performance improvement and demonstrate the benefits of the proposed SLP-based low-range-sidelobe waveform design in ISAC systems.

Owing to the promising ability of saving hardware cost and spectrum resources, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as a revolutionary technology for future sixth-generation (6G) networks. The mono-static ISAC systems considered in most of existing works can only achieve limited sensing performance due to the single observation angle and easily blocked transmission links, which motivates researchers to investigate cooperative ISAC networks. In order to further improve the degrees of freedom (DoFs) of cooperative ISAC networks, the transmitter-receiver selection, i.e., base station (BS) mode selection problem, is meaningful to be studied. However, to our best knowledge, this crucial problem has not been extensively studied in existing works. In this paper, we consider the joint BS mode selection, transmit beamforming, and receive filter designs for cooperative cell-free ISAC networks, where multi-BSs cooperatively serve communication users and detect targets. Inspired by the applications of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in dynamically manipulating wireless propagation environment, in this paper, we investigate to deploy a RIS in an ISAC system to pursue performance improvement. Particularly, we consider a RIS-assisted ISAC system where a multi-antenna base station (BS) performs multi-target detection and multi-user communication with the assistance of a RIS. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is recognized as a promising technology with great potential in saving hardware and spectrum resources, since it simultaneously realizes radar detection and user communication functions in the fully-shared platform. Employing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in ISAC systems is able to provide a virtual line-of-sight (LoS) path to conquer blockage problem as well as introduce new degrees of freedom (DoFs) to further enhance system performance. Nevertheless, the multiplicative fading effect of passive RIS limits its applications in the absence of direct links, which promotes the development of active RIS. In this paper, we consider an active RIS-assisted ISAC system and aim to jointly design the transmit beamformer, the active RIS reflection and the radar receive filter to maximize the radar output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) while guaranteeing pre-defined signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) for communication users. In this paper, we investigate the integration of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for providing wide-coverage and ultra-reliable communication and high-accuracy sensing functions. In particular, we consider an RIS-assisted ISAC system in which a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously performs multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) communications and radar sensing with the assistance of an RIS. We focus on both target detection and parameter estimation performance in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and Cramer-Rao bound (CRB), respectively. Two optimization problems are formulated for maximizing the achievable sum-rate of the multi-user communications under an SNR constraint for target detection or a CRB constraint for parameter estimation, the transmit power budget, and the unit-modulus constraint of the RIS reflection coefficients. Efficient algorithms are developed to solve these two complicated non-convex problems. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed joint beamforming and reflection designs compared with other schemes. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), which allows individual radar and communication systems to share the same spectrum bands, is an emerging and promising technique for alleviating spectrum congestion problems. In this paper, we investigate how to exploit the inherent interference from strong radar signals to ensure the physical layer security (PLS) for the considered multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication and colocated multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar coexistence system. In particular, with known eavesdroppers' channel state information (CSI), we propose to jointly design the transmit beamformers of communication and radar systems to minimize the maximum eavesdropping signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) on multiple legitimate users, while guaranteeing the communication quality-of-service (QoS) of legitimate transmissions, the requirement of radar detection performance, and the transmit power constraints of both radar and communication systems. When eavesdroppers' CSI is unavailable, we develop a joint artificial noise (AN)-aided transmit beamforming design scheme, which utilizes residual available power to generate AN for disrupting malicious receptions as well as satisfying the requirements of both legitimate transmissions and radar target detection. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a revolutionary technology for sixth-generation (6G) networks owing to its ability to manipulate wireless environments. As a frequency-selective device, RIS can only effectively shape the propagation of signals within a certain frequency band. Due to this frequency-selective property, the deployment of RIS in cellular networks will introduce a complicated base station (BS)-RIS-user association issue since adjacent BSs operate at different frequency bands. In this paper, with the consideration of the frequency-selective characteristics of RIS, we aim to jointly optimize BS-RIS-user association, active beamforming at BSs, and passive beamforming of RIS to maximize the sum-rate of a RIS-assisted cellular network. We first leverage $l_0$-norm to efficiently integrate BS-RIS-user association with active and passive beamforming. Then, we adopt fractional programming (FP) and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods to deal with logarithmic and fractional parts and decouple the joint association and beamforming design problem into several sub-problems. Efficient algorithms which combine $l_0$-norm approximation, majorization-minimization (MM), and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) are developed to alternately solve the sub-problems. Conventional symbol-level precoding (SLP) designs assume fixed modulations and detection rules at the receivers for simplifying the transmit precoding optimizations, which greatly limits the flexibility of SLP and the communication quality-of-service (QoS). Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is regarded as a promising technology with great potential to boost wireless networks. Affected by the "double fading" effect, however, conventional passive RIS cannot bring considerable performance improvement when users are not close enough to RIS. Recently, active RIS is introduced to combat the double fading effect by actively amplifying incident signals with the aid of integrated reflection-type amplifiers. In order to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption due to massive active components in the conventional fully-connected active RIS, a novel hardware-and-energy efficient sub-connected active RIS architecture has been proposed recently, in which multiple reconfigurable electromagnetic elements are driven by only one amplifier. In this paper, we first develop an improved and accurate signal model for the sub-connected active RIS architecture. Then, we investigate the joint transmit precoding and RIS reflection beamforming (i.e., the reflection phase-shift and amplification coefficients) designs in multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication systems. Both sum-rate maximization and power minimization problems are solved by leveraging fractional programming (FP), block coordinate descent (BCD), second-order cone programming (SOCP), alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and majorization-minimization (MM) methods. Hybrid analog and digital beamforming has emerged as a key enabling technology for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems since it can balance the trade-off between system performance and hardware efficiency. Owing to the strong ability of central control, cooperative networks show great potential to enhance the spectral efficiency of mmWave communications. In this paper, we consider cooperative mmWave MIMO systems and propose user association and hybrid beamforming design algorithms for three typical hybrid beamforming architectures. The central processing unit (CPU) of the cooperative networks first matches the service pairs of base stations (BSs) and users. Then, an iterative hybrid beamforming design algorithm is proposed to maximize the weighted achievable sum-rate performance of the mmWave MIMO system with fully connected hybrid beamforming architecture. Moreover, a heuristic analog beamforming design algorithm is introduced for the fixed subarray hybrid beamforming architecture. In an effort to further exploit multiple-antenna diversities, we also consider the dynamic subarray architecture and propose a novel antenna design algorithm for the analog beamforming design. Cell-free networks are regarded as a promising technology to meet higher rate requirements for beyond fifth-generation (5G) communications. Most works on cell-free networks focus on either fully centralized beamforming to maximally enhance system performance, or fully distributed beamforming to avoid extensive channel state information (CSI) exchange among access points (APs). In order to achieve both network capacity improvement and CSI exchange reduction, we propose a partially distributed beamforming design algorithm for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free networks. We aim at maximizing the weighted sum-rate of all users by designing active and passive beamforming subject to transmit power constraints of APs and unit-modulus constraints of RIS elements. The weighted sum-rate maximization problem is first transformed into an equivalent weighted sum-mean-square-error (sum-MSE) minimization problem, and then alternating optimization (AO) approach is adopted to iteratively design active and passive beamformer. Specifically, active beamforming vectors are obtained by local APs and passive beamforming vector is optimized by central processing unit (CPU). Dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems, which can efficiently utilize the congested spectrum and costly hardware resources by employing one common waveform for both sensing and communication (S&C), have attracted increasing attention. While the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely adopted to support high-quality communications, it also has great potentials of improving radar sensing performance and providing flexible S&C. In this paper, we propose to jointly design the dual-functional transmit signals occupying several subcarriers to realize multi-user OFDM communications and detect one moving target in the presence of clutter. Meanwhile, the signals in other frequency subcarriers can be optimized in a similar way to perform other tasks. The transmit beamforming and receive filter are jointly optimized to maximize the radar output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), while satisfying the communication SINR requirement and the power budget. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a promising technology to tackle the spectrum congestion problem for future networks. In this correspondence, we investigate to deploy a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in an ISAC system for achieving better performance. In particular, a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously serves multiple single-antenna users with the assistance of a RIS and detects potential targets. Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is emerging as a key enabler to address the growing spectrum congestion problem and satisfy increasing demands for ubiquitous sensing and communication. In this article, we analyze the potential of deploying RIS to improve communication and sensing performance in ISAC systems. We first describe the fundamentals of RIS and its applications in traditional communication and sensing systems, then introduce the principles of ISAC and overview existing explorations on RIS-assisted ISAC, followed by one case study to verify the advantages of deploying RIS in ISAC systems. Symbol-level precoding (SLP), which converts the harmful multi-user interference (MUI) into beneficial signals, can significantly improve symbol-error-rate (SER) performance in multi-user communication systems. While enjoying symbolic gain, however, the complicated non-linear symbol-by-symbol precoder design suffers high computational complexity exponential with the number of users, which is unaffordable in realistic systems. In this paper, we propose a novel low-complexity grouped SLP (G-SLP) approach and develop efficient design algorithms for typical max-min fairness and power minimization problems. In particular, after dividing all users into several groups, the precoders for each group are separately designed on a symbol-by-symbol basis by only utilizing the symbol information of the users in that group, in which the intra-group MUI is exploited using the concept of constructive interference (CI) and the inter-group MUI is also effectively suppressed. In order to further reduce the computational complexity, we utilize the Lagrangian dual, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions and the majorization-minimization (MM) method to transform the resulting problems into more tractable forms, and develop efficient algorithms for obtaining closed-form solutions to them. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been regarded as a promising and revolutionary technology for future wireless communication systems owing to its capability of tailoring signal propagation environment in an energy/spectrum/hardware-efficient manner. However, most existing studies on IRS optimizations are based on a simple and ideal reflection model that is impractical in hardware implementation, which thus leads to severe performance loss in realistic wideband/multi-band systems. To deal with this problem, in this paper we first propose a more practical and more tractable IRS reflection model that describes the difference of reflection responses for signals at different frequencies. Then, we investigate the joint transmit beamforming and IRS reflection beamforming design for an IRS-assisted multi-cell multi-band system. Optimally extracting the advantages available from reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in wireless communications systems requires estimation of the channels to and from the RIS. The process of determining these channels is complicated by the fact that the RIS is typically composed of passive elements without any data processing capabilities, and thus the channels must be estimated indirectly by a non-colocated device, typically a controlling base station. In this article, we examine channel estimation for RIS-based systems from a fundamental viewpoint. We study various possible channel models and the identifiability of the models as a function of the available pilot data and behavior of the RIS during training. In particular, we consider situations with and without line-of-sight propagation, single- and multiple-antenna configurations for the users and base station, correlated and sparse channel models, single-carrier and wideband OFDM scenarios, availability of direct links between the users and base station, exploitation of prior information, as well as a number of other special cases. We further conduct numerical comparisons of achievable performance for various channel models using the relevant Cramer-Rao bounds.

Dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) systems can simultaneously perform both radar and communication functionalities using the same hardware platform and spectrum resource. In this paper, we consider multi-input multi-output (MIMO) DFRC systems and focus on transmit beamforming designs to provide both radar sensing and multi-user communications. Unlike conventional block-level precoding techniques, we propose to use the recently emerged symbol-level precoding approach in DFRC systems, which provides additional degrees of freedom (DoFs) that guarantee preferable instantaneous transmit beampatterns for radar sensing and achieve better communication performance. In particular, the squared error between the designed and desired beampatterns is minimized subject to the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of the communication users and the constant-modulus power constraint. Two efficient algorithms are developed to solve this non-convex problem on both the Euclidean and Riemannian spaces. The first algorithm employs penalty dual decomposition (PDD), majorization-minimization (MM), and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods to convert the original optimization problem into two solvable sub-problems, and iteratively solves them using efficient algorithms. The second algorithm provides a much faster solution at the price of a slight performance loss, first transforming the original problem into Riemannian space, and then utilizing the augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) to obtain an unconstrained problem that is subsequently solved via a Riemannian Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (RBFGS) algorithm. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been deemed as one of potential components of future wireless communication systems because they can adaptively manipulate the wireless propagation environment with low-cost passive devices. However, due to double fading effect, the passive RIS can offer sufficient signal strength only when receivers are nearby and located at the same side as the incident signals. Moreover, RIS cannot provide service coverage for the users at the back side of it. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been regarded as a revolutionary and promising technology owing to its powerful feature of adaptively shaping wireless propagation environment. However, as a frequency-selective device, the RIS can only effectively provide tunable phase-shifts for signals within a certain frequency band. Thus, base-station (BS)-RIS-user association is an important issue to maximize the efficiency and ability of the RIS in cellular networks. In this paper, we consider a RIS-aided cellular network and aim to maximize the sum-rate of downlink transmissions by designing BS-RIS-user association as well as the active and passive beamforming of BSs and RIS, respectively. A dynamically successive access algorithm is developed to design the user association. During the dynamical access process, an iterative algorithm is proposed to alternatively obtain the active and passive beamforming. Finally, the optimal BS-RIS association is obtained by an exhaustive search method. Simulation results illustrate the significant performance improvement of the proposed BS-RIS-user association and beamforming design algorithm.

The recently emerged symbol-level precoding (SLP) technique has been regarded as a promising solution in multi-user wireless communication systems, since it can convert harmful multi-user interference (MUI) into beneficial signals for enhancing system performance. However, the tremendous computational complexity of conventional symbol-level precoding designs severely hinders the practical implementations. In order to tackle this difficulty, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) based approach to efficiently design the symbol-level precoders. Particularly, in this correspondence, we consider a multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) downlink system. An efficient precoding neural network (EPNN) is introduced to optimize the symbol-level precoders for maximizing the minimum quality-of-service (QoS) of all users under the power constraint. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deemed as a promising and revolutionizing technology for future wireless communication systems owing to its capability to intelligently change the propagation environment and introduce a new dimension into wireless communication optimization. Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) have been proposed as a revolutionary technology owing to its capability of adaptively reconfiguring the propagation environment in a cost-effective and hardware-efficient fashion. While the application of IRS as a passive reflector to enhance the performance of wireless communications has been widely investigated in the literature, using IRS as a passive transmitter recently is emerging as a new concept and attracting steadily growing interest. In this paper, we propose two novel IRS-based passive information transmission systems using advanced symbol-level precoding. One is a standalone passive information transmission system, where the IRS operates as a passive transmitter serving multiple receivers by adjusting its elements to reflect unmodulated carrier signals. The other is a joint passive reflection and information transmission system, where the IRS not only enhances transmissions for multiple primary information receivers (PIRs) by passive reflection, but also simultaneously delivers additional information to a secondary information receiver (SIR) by embedding its information into the primary signals at the symbol level. Two typical optimization problems, i.e., power minimization and quality-of-service (QoS) balancing, are investigated for the proposed IRS-based passive information transmission systems. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising solution to enhance wireless information transmissions by adaptively controlling prorogation environment. Recently, the brand-new concept of utilizing IRS to implement a passive transmitter attracts researchers' attention since it potentially realizes low-complexity and hardware-efficient transmitters of multiple-input single/multiple-output (MISO/MIMO) systems. In this paper we investigate the problem of precoder design for a low-resolution IRS-based transmitter to implement multi-user MISO/MIMO wireless communications. Particularly, the IRS modulates information symbols by varying the phases of its reflecting elements and transmits them to $K$ single-antenna or multi-antenna users. We first aim to design the symbol-level precoder for IRS to realize the modulation and minimize the maximum symbol-error-rate (SER) of single-antenna receivers. In order to tackle this NP-hard problem, we first relax the low-resolution phase-shift constraint and solve this problem by Riemannian conjugate gradient (RCG) algorithm. Then, the low-resolution symbol-level precoding vector is obtained by direct quantization. Considering the large quantization error for 1-bit resolution case, the branch-and-bound method is utilized to solve the 1-bit resolution symbol-level precoding vector. For multi-antenna receivers, we propose to iteratively design the symbol-level precoder and combiner by decomposing the original large-scale optimization problem into several sub-problems.
