3. Effects of exposure to the inhalational anaesthetic sevoflurane on the male reproductive system in rats

Abstract

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of inhalational anaesthetics on the male reproductive system in neonatal rats. Methods Postnatal day 6 (P6) male rat pups were assigned to 2 groups of 40 rats each. The control group did not receive anaesthesia, and the test group was exposed to air containing 3% sevoflurane in a chamber. After sevoflurane exposure, the effects on the male reproductive system in neonatal rats exposed to inhalational anaesthetics were tested. The rats were maintained to P60. The fertility, sperm and spermatid count, sperm motility, organ weights and histological changes in rats were determined. Results Compared with those of the control group, the sperm count and motility of the sevoflurane group were significantly decreased (p < 0.05), and there was also a decrease in the number of foetal rats from the sevoflurane group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the arrangement of the seminiferous tubule was regular in the control group, whereas the arrangement of the seminiferous tubule was distorted and the spermatocytes were detached and irregularly lined in the sevoflurane group. TUNEL analysis showed that the number of apoptotic cells in the testes of the sevoflurane group was significantly increased (p < 0.05). SOD and MDA analyses showed that SOD was decreased, while MDA expression was increased. Conclusions These data indicated that young rats suffered as a result of inhalation of the anaesthetic sevoflurane and had reduced reproductive system function during adolescence in males. These studies are useful as a foundation for clinical studies.

Abstract

In response to brood parasitism, which significantly reduces the reproductive success of avian hosts, hosts have evolved the ability to recognize and reject parasitic eggs. Many studies have revealed the factors influencing egg recognition and egg rejection. Recent work has demonstrated that host personality along the bold–shy continuum can influence egg rejection behaviour. In addition, the egg rejection behaviour of hosts differs among populations, suggesting that individuals with different personalities might evolve various adaptive behaviours under different parasitic pressures, but there have been few relevant experiments to test this. In the present study, two populations of the Japanese tit, Parus minor , distributed in China were used to examine whether there were differences in egg rejection behaviour of individuals with different personalities. The results showed that egg rejection rates of bold individuals (which remained in the nest box when encountering human invaders) and shy individuals (which immediately flew away from the nest box when encountering human invaders) were similar in both populations of the Japanese tit, and there were also no significant differences in egg rejection rates between individuals of the same personality in the two populations. This study suggests that host personality along the bold–shy continuum does not account for egg rejection behaviour in Japanese tits. This might be attributable either to other factors that affect egg rejection behaviour counteracting the effect of personality or to the presence of multiple personality traits that act together in the Japanese tits, counteracting the effect of a single personality trait. Abstract

Multiple studies demonstrated that sepsis is a life-threatening state of organ dysfunction caused by infection and can induce neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of attractylone (Atr) on sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) and cognitive dysfunction. Moreover, we studied the underlying molecular mechanisms. We used an LPS-induced sepsis mouse model and evaluated the cognitive function with the Morris water maze and open field test. Neuronal damage in the hippocampus was assessed by immunohistochemical analysis. BV2 cells were used to identify the protective mechanism of Atr. The result showed that Atr attenuated LPS-induced cognitive impairment, neural apoptosis, inflammatory factors, and microglial activation. The in vitro experiment showed that Atr promoted silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) expression and suppressed NFκB expression. Downregulation of SIRT1 reversed the protective effect of Atr in the LPS condition. Moreover, Atr-induced SIRT1 expression promoted BV2 from LPS-induced M1 to M2 phenotype. Taken together, these results indicated that Atr was a potential therapeutic agent for SAE and cognitive dysfunction.

The inclusion of e - sports as an official event in the Hangzhou Asian Games is an important step towards the institutionalization of e - sports, marking that Asia is once again takes a lead in the development of global e - sports. This paper investigates from a combined perspective of process analysis and actor network theory a series of events in the inclusion process of e - sports into the Asian Games, analyzes the type characteristics of e - sports events in the Asian Games, examines the interest interaction and balance in the network composed of international sports organizations, e - sports organizations, event organizers and e - sports game manufacturers. This paper also examines the functions of industrial economy, cultural politics and Olympic values in the formation and evolution of e - sports, aiming to reveal the impact of e - sports inclusion in the Asian Games on the institutionalization of e - sports and the enlightenment of innovative exploration on the inclusion of e - sports into comprehensive games. Abstract

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) refers to a series of clinical syndromes, including symptoms such as nightmares, hallucinations, severe anxiety, fear, and trauma related to the environment. These symptoms tend to occur after intense psychological trauma or physiological stress. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to play key roles in various biological processes, although it is unknown whether they have important functions in PTSD. Here, we present the first study exploring the connection between lncRNAs and a PTSD-like syndrome in rats. We find distinct expression profiles of lncRNAs between PTSD-like syndrome rats and a control group, which provides information for further research on the differentiation of PTSD and transdifferentiation between the PTSD-like syndrome and the control group. This information will be helpful for finding new therapeutic targets for the treatment of PTSD.
