Recently, metasurfaces have experienced revolutionary growth in the sensing and superresolution imaging field, due to their enabling of subwavelength manipulation of electromagnetic waves. However, the addition of metasurfaces multiplies the complexity of retrieving target information from the detected fields. Besides, although the deep learning method affords a compelling platform for a series of electromagnetic problems, many studies mainly concentrate on resolving one single function and limit the research's versatility. In this study, a multifunctional deep neural network is demonstrated to reconstruct target information in a metasurface targets interactive system. Firstly, the interactive scenario is confirmed to tolerate the system noises in a primary verification experiment. Then, fed with the electric field distributions, the multitask deep neural network can not only sense the quantity and permittivity of targets but also generate superresolution images with high precision. The deep learning method provides another way to recover targets' diverse information in metasurface based target detection, accelerating the progression of target reconstruction areas. This methodology may also hold promise for inverse reconstruction or forward prediction problems in other electromagnetic scenarios.

Retroreflectors that can accurately redirect the incident wave in free space back along its original channel provide unprecedented opportunities for light manipulation in wireless communication. However, to the best of our knowledge, the existing methods of designing retroreflectors suffer from either the bulky size, narrow angular bandwidth, or time-consuming post-processing. Here, a scheme of designing ultrathin and all-angle retroreflectors based on hyperbolic plasmonic metasurfaces is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The physical mechanism underlying this scheme is the high-efficiency all-angle transition between the traveling waves in free space and the canalized spoof surface plasmon (SSP) on the hyperbolic plasmonic metasurfaces (HPMs). In this case, the strong confinement characteristic benefited from the enhanced light-matter interaction enables us to route and retroreflect the canalized SSP with extremely ultrathin structures. As proof of the scheme, a retroreflector prototype with a thickness approximately equal to the central wavelength is designed and fabricated. Further experimental investigation obtains a maximum efficiency of 83.2% and a half-power field of view up to 53{\deg}. This scheme can find promising applications in target detection, remote sensing, and diverse on-chip light control devices.

Inspired by the capability of structured illumination microscopy in subwavelength imaging, many researchers devoted themselves to investigating this methodology. However, due to the free propagating feature of the traditional structured illumination fields, the resolution can be only improved up to double times compared with the diffractied limited microscopy. Besides, most of the previous studies, relying on incoherent illumination sources, are restricted to fluorescent samples. In this work, a subwavelength nonfluorescent imaging method is proposed based on the terahertz traveling wave and plasmonics illumination. Excited along with a metal grating, the spoof surface plasmons are employed as the plasmonics illumination. When the scattering waves with the SSPs illumination are captured, the high order spatial frequency components of the sample are already encoded into the obtainable low order ones. Then, an algorithm is summarized to shift the modulated SF components to their actual positions in the Fourier domain. In this manner, high order SF components carrying the fine information are introduced to reconstruct the desired imaging, leading to an improvement of the resolution up to 0.12 lambda. Encouragingly, the resolution can be further enhanced by tuning the working frequency of the SSPs. This method holds promise for some important applications in terahertz nonfluorescent microscopy and sample detection with weak scattering.

Among the most promising terahertz (THz) radiation devices, gyrotrons can generate powerful THz-wave radiation in an open resonant structure. Unfortunately, such an oscillation using high-Q axial mode has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated to suffer from strong ohmic losses. In this paper, a solution to such a challenging problem is to include a narrow belt of lossy section in the interaction circuit to stably constitute the traveling wave interaction (high-order-axial-mode, HOAM), and employ a down-tapered magnetic field to amplify the forward-wave component. A scheme based on the traveling-wave interaction concept is proposed to strengthen electron beam-wave interaction efficiency and simultaneously reduce the ohmic loss in a 1-THz third harmonic gyrotron, which is promising for further advancement of high-power continuous-wave operation.

Manipulation of spoof surface plasmons (SSPs) has recently intrigued enormous interest due to the capability of guiding waves with subwavelength footsteps. However, most of the previous studies, manifested for a single functionality, are not suitable for multifunctional integrated devices. Herein, a bifunctional Luneburg-fisheye lens is proposed based on a two-dimension metal pillar array. Firstly, by tuning the geometric dimension of the metal pillars in the array, its ability to precisely manipulate the excited SSPs along one direction is confirmed, achieving subwavelength focusing and imaging with the resolution up to 0.14 times the wavelength. Then, separately controlling the propagation of the SSPs along the orthotropic directions is further implemented, and the bifunctional Luneburg-fisheye lens is realized. The bifunctional lens is characterized as a Luneburg one along the x-axis, whereas in the y-axis, it presents the properties of a Maxwell fisheye lens. The experimental results almost immaculately match with the simulation ones. This bifunctional lens can validly reduce the system complexity and exert flexibility in multifunctional applications, while the proposed metal pillar-based design method broadens the application range of gradient refractive-index lens in the microwaves, terahertz, and even optical ranges., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Recent advances in hyperbolic metamaterials have spurred many breakthroughs in the field of manipulating light propagation. However, the unusual electromagnetic properties also put extremely high demands on its compositional materials. Limited by the finite relative permittivity of the natural materials, the effective permittivity of the constructed hyperbolic metamaterials is also confined to a narrow range. Here, based on the proposed concept of structure-induced spoof surface plasmon, we prove that arbitrary materials can be selected to construct the hyperbolic metamaterials with independent relative effective permittivity components. Besides, the theoretical achievable ranges of the relative effective permittivity components are unlimited. As proofs of the method, three novel hyperbolic metamaterials are designed with their functionalities validated numerically and experimentally by specified directional propagation. To further illustrate the superiority of the method, an all-metal low-loss hyperbolic metamaterial filled with air is proposed and demonstrated. The proposed methodology effectively reduces the design requirement for hyperbolic metamaterials and provides new ideas for the scenarios where large permittivity coverage is needed such as microwave and terahertz focus, super-resolution imaging, electromagnetic cloaking, and so on.

Gradient metasurfaces have been extensively applied in recent years for enabling an unprecedented control of light beam over thin optical components. However, these metasurfaces suffer from low efficiency when it comes to bending light with large angle and high fabrication demand when it requires fine discretion. In this work, we investigate the all-dielectric metagrating based on mie-type resonances interference, allowing extraordinary optical diffraction for beam steering with ultralarge angle. It is found that the coupling inside and among lattice of metagrating can tune the exciting state of electric and magnetic resonances including both fundamental dipoles and high-order multipoles, leading to ideal asymmetrical scattering pattern for redistributing the energy between the diffraction channels at will. The participation of quadrupole and hexapole not only significantly enhance the working efficiency, but also bring distinctive possibilities for wave manipulation which cannot be reached by dipoles. Utilizing a thin array of silicon rods, large-angle negative refraction and reflection are demonstrated with almost unity efficiency under both polarizations. Compared with conventional metasurfaces, such an all-dielectric mategrating has the merits of high flexibility, high efficiency and low fabrication demand. The strong coupling and prosperous interactions among multipoles may behave as a cornerstone for broad range of wavefront control and offer an effective solution for various on-chip optical wave control such as bending, focusing, filtering and sensing.

Advances in graphene plasmonics offer numerous opportunities for enabling the design and manufacture of a variety of nanoelectronics and other exciting optical devices. However, due to the limitation of material properties, its operating frequency cannot drop to the microwave range. In this work, a new concept of microwave equivalent graphene based on the ultrathin monolayer plasmonic metasurface is proposed and demonstrated. Based on this concept, elliptical and hyperbolic dispersion can be theoretically obtained by stacking the equivalent graphene metasurfaces periodically. As proofs of the concept and method, an elliptical and an all-metal hyperbolic metamaterial are designed and numerically demonstrated. As a specified realization of the method, a practical hyperbolic metamaterial is fabricated and experimentally investigated with its validity verified by the directional propagation and photonic spin Hall effect. Furthermore, to investigate the validity of the method under extreme parameter conditions, a proof-of-concept hyperlens is designed and fabricated, with its near-field resolution of 0.05$\lambda$ experimentally verified. Based on the proposed concept, diverse optical graphene metamaterials such as focusing lens, dispersion-dependent directional couplers, and epsilon-near-zero materials can also be realized in the microwave regime.

Breaking the diffraction limit is always an appealing topic due to the urge for a better imaging resolution in almost all areas. As an effective solution, the superlens based on the plasmonic effect can resonantly amplify evanescent waves, and achieve subwavelength resolution. However, the natural plasmonic materials, within their limited choices, usually have inherit high losses and are only available from the infrared to visible wavelengths. In this work, we have theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the arbitrary materials, even air, can be used to enhance evanescent waves and build low loss superlens with at the desired frequency. The operating mechanisms reside in the dispersion-induced effective plasmons in a bounded waveguide structure. Based on this, we constructed the hyperbolic metamaterials and experimentally verified its validity in the microwave range by the directional propagation and imaging with a resolution of 0.087 wavelength. We have also demonstrated that the imaging potential can be extended to terahertz and infrared bands. The proposed method can break the conventional barriers of plasmon-based lenses and bring new possibilities to the field of superresolution imaging from microwave to infrared wavelengths.

Spoof surface plasmon meta-couplers are compact antennas which link propagating waves and surface waves. However, most of them are designed with a fixed phase gradient and channel for the incident waves with specific polarization, which limits their further applications in multichannel scenarios. In this Letter, we propose, to the best of our knowledge, a new method that combines the Brillouin folds theory with the Generalized Snell Law. We demonstrate that when the phase gradient of the metasurface is large enough, Brillouin folds effect will occur, which will create dual phase gradient space in a single metasurface. With this method, we design two novel terahertz meta-couplers with functionalities of symmetrical and asymmetrical binary-channel/bidirectional SSP excitation. Furthermore, finite element method (FEM) simulations are performed to demonstrate their functionalities. Considering the orthogonality of the incident waves, there can be a total of four independent space channels to excite SSP on one metasurface. This work may open up new routes in multi-channel SSP meta-couplers and multi-beam surface wave antennas.

Imaging below the diffraction limit is always a public interest because of the restricted resolution of conventional imaging systems. To beat the limit, evanescent harmonics decaying in space must participate in the imaging process. Here, we introduce the method of spatial spectrum sampling, a novel far-field superresolution imaging method for microwave and terahertz regime. Strong dispersion and momentum conservation allow the spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSP) structure to become a sensitive probe for spatial harmonics. This enables that the spatial information of the targets including both propagating and evanescent components, can be extracted by tuning and recording SSP in the far field. Then, the subwavelength resolution is constructed by the inversed Fourier transform of the sampled spatial spectrum. Using the modified subwavelength metallic grating as the spoof plasmonic structure, a far-field resolution of 0.17 wavelength is numerically and experimentally verified, and two-dimensional imaging ability is also fully discussed. The imaging ability and flexibility can be further optimizing the SSP structures. Spoof surface plasmon (SSP) meta-couplers that efficiently integrate other diversified functionalities into a single ultrathin device are highly desirable in the modern microwave and terahertz fields. However, the diversified functionalities, to the best of our knowledge, have not been applied to circular polarization meta-couplers because of the spin coupling between the orthogonal incident waves. In this paper, we propose and numerically demonstrate a terahertz spin-decoupled bifunctional meta-coupler for SSP excitation and beam steering. The designed meta-coupler is composed of a coupling metasurface and a propagating metasurface. The former aims at realizing anomalous reflection or converting the incident waves into SSP under the illumination of the left or right circular polarization waves, respectively, and the latter are used to guide out the excited SSP. The respective converting efficiency can reach 82% and 70% at 0.3THz for the right and left circular polarization incident waves. Besides, by appropriately adjusting the reflection phase distribution, many other diversified functionalities can also be integrated into the meta-coupler. Our study may open up new routes for polarization-related SSP couplers, detectors, and other practical terahertz devices.
