14. Ligand-modulated electron transfer rates from CsPbBr3 nanocrystals to titanium dioxide

Abstract

In most perovskite nanocrystal (PeNC)-based optoelectronic and photonic applications, surface ligands inevitably lead to a donor–bridge–acceptor charge transfer configuration. In this article, we demonstrate successful modulation of electron transfer (ET) rates from all-inorganic CsPbBr3 PeNCs to mesoporous titanium dioxide films, by using different surface ligands including single alkyl chain oleic acid and oleylamine, cross-linked insulating (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane and aromatic naphthoic acid molecules as the ligand-bridge. We systematically investigated the ET process through time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Calculations verified the ligand-bridge barrier effect of the three species upon the ET process. Transient absorption measurements excluded carrier-delocalization effect of the naphthoic acid ligands and confirmed the bridge-barrier effect. Our work provides a perspective for composable and appropriate ligands design for diverse practical purposes.

Abstract

Hybrid organic-inorganic solar photovoltaic (PV) cells capable of directly converting sunlight to electricity have attracted much attention in recent years. Despite evident technological advancements in the PV industry, the widespread commercialisation of solar cells is still being mired by their low conversion efficiencies and high cost per Watt. Perovskites are an emerging class of semiconductors providing a low-cost alternative to silicon-based photovoltaic cells, which currently dominate the market. This thesis develops a series of studies on “all-solid state perovskite solar cells” fabricated via vapour deposition which is an industrially-accessible technique, to achieve planar heterojunction architectures and efficient PV devices. Chapter 2 presents a general outlook on the operating principles of solar cells, delving deeper into the specific operational mechanism of perovskite solar cells. It also explores the usual methods employed in the fabrication of perovskite thin films. Chapter 3 describes the experimental procedures followed during the fabrication of the individual components constituting the device from the synthesis of the precursors to the construction of the functioning perovskite PV devices. Chapter 4 demonstrates pioneering work involving the dual-source vapour deposition (DSVD) of planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells which generated remarkable power conversion efficiency values surpassing 15%. These significant results pave the way for the mass-production of perovskite PVs. To further expand the range of feasible vapour deposition techniques, a two-layer sequential vapour deposition (SVD) technique is explored in Chapter 5. This chapter focusses on identifying the factors affecting the fundamental properties of the vapour-deposited films. Findings provide an improved understanding of the effects of precursor compositions and annealing conditions on the films. Chapter 5 concludes with a comparison between SVD and DSVD fabricated films, highlighting the benefits of each vapour deposition technique. Furthermore, hysteretic effects are analysed in Chapter 6 for the perovskite PV devices fabricated based on different structural configurations. An interesting discovery involving the temporary functioning of compact layer-free perovskite PV devices suggests the presence of a built-in-field responsible for the hysteresis of the cells. The observations made in this chapter yield a new understanding of the functionality of individual cell layers. Combining the advantages of the optimum vapour deposition technique established in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5, with the enhanced understanding of perovskite PV cell operational mechanism acquired from Chapter 6, an ongoing study on an “all-perovskite” tandem solar cell is introduced in Chapter 7. This demonstration of the “all-perovskite” tandem devices confirms the versatility of perovskites for a broader range of PV applications.

Abstract

Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells (TSCs) have aroused much attentions in recent years. One of keys for achieving highly efficient and stable TSCs is to guarantee effective charge transfer, especially on the rough textured silicon substrate due to the poor adhesion between interlayers. Here, a 2‐fluoroisonicotinic acid (2‐FNA) additive that possesses fluorine (‐F), carboxylic acid (‐COOH), and pyridine nitrogen as functional groups in the perovskite precursor to assist the crystallization process is utilized. It shows that 2‐FNA can efficiently reduce the defects and suppress non‐radiative recombination of perovskite layers by bonding with the uncoordinated Pb2+ ions, formamidinium (FA+), and halide vacancies, leading to notably prolonged carrier lifetime. Most importantly, this found that 2‐FNA aids in the formation of better interfacial contact between the perovskite and C60 layer on top, thus enhancing the interfacial electron extraction therein, eventually leading to an increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 28.61% on champion perovskite/silicon TSCs from 27.08% on control counterparts. 35. Surface Sn(IV) Hydrolysis Improves Inorganic Sn-Pb Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract

Cesium tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskites are exceptional for their combined capabilities in unlocking ideal bandgaps for solar cells and mitigating the stability issue faced by their hybrid organic-inorganic counterparts. But the development of high-performance solar cells using these materials is retarded by their inherent high density of detrimental Sn(IV) defects. Herein, we demonstrate a sequential surface treatment method, which entails a Sn(II) halide treatment to displace the buried Sn(IV) ions underneath the film surface, followed by a H2O treatment to hydrolyze the displaced Sn(IV) ions. The surface treatment induces chemical and microstructural reconstructions that significantly improve the optoelectronic properties and stability of perovskites. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 16.79% and a T90 stability of 958 h are achieved, topping all previously reported performance parameters for inorganic Sn-Pb PSCs. This achievement further shortens the performance gap between all-inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic Sn-Pb PSCs with sub-1.4 eV bandgaps. © 2023 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

Organic–inorganic lead halide perovskites have attracted great interest as low-cost and high efficiency solar cells. However, the excessive surface defects of perovskite crystal grains are still a crucial factor that limits further improvement in the performance of corresponding devices. Here, we introduce potassium chloride (KCl) into the precursor of a triple A-cation mixed-halide perovskite to passivate the surface defects and provide an insight into the underlying passivation mechanism of this common salt. We reveal that KCl exists on the surface of perovskite grains, suppressing the grain surface defects and modulating the energy level alignment of the perovskite solar cell (PSC). KCl added PSCs achieved a high open circuit voltage of 1.162 V compared with that of a control device (1.087 V), due to suppressed non-radiative recombination losses. Our work investigates the synergetic effect of K+ and Cl− on the enhancement of the device performance and provides an effective strategy of defect passivation toward highly efficient perovskite solar cells.
