Abstract

Black phosphorus (BP) has been recognized as an ideal anode material for fast‐charging lithium (Li)‐ion capacitors (LICs) due to its high theoretical capacity (2596 mAh g−1), appropriate lithiation potential (0.7 V vs Li+/Li) and fast ion diffusion capability. However, large volume change and soluble polyphosphides (LixPs)‐based intermediates during charging‐discharging process seriously deteriorate cycling performance. To address the aforementioned issues, an elaborated design is reported on the binder for BP electrode. The ‐NH2 polar functional group in grafted chitosan (GCS) binder presents strong chemical anchoring effect for both BP and soluble LixPs, achieving superior adhesion force and LixPs constraining capability for enhanced structure integrity of BP electrode. In addition, GCS exhibits strong Li‐ion binding energy that promotes the Li‐ion adsorption at electrode level, leading to a boosted cycle life for BP. As a result, the graphene (G) incorporated BP electrode using GCS binder shows specific capacity of 997.6 mAh g−1 after 400 cycles at 1 A g−1. Abstract

The 2D layered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) material is a promising platform for making single photon emitters (SPEs). Integrate SPEs with photonic cavities or waveguides, requires the deterministic positioning of these emitters as accurately as possible. Among all of the alternative techniques, He+ focused ion beam (FIB) theoretically has sub‐nanometer precision, but its practical positioning accuracy in processing SPEs is limited by the inevitable detrimental byproduct defects. So far, it remains challenging to achieve an accuracy below 100 nm for the positioning of SPEs in hBN. Here, we present a two‐step method for creating SPEs at the predetermined positions in hBN that combines the He+ FIB irradiation and thermal annealing under an oxygen atmosphere. With this method, we have realized the positioning accuracy of less than 50 nm, which, to the best of our knowledge, stands as the highest among the currently available hBN SPEs preparation methods. Moreover, the SPE conversion yield was over 35% and the emission brightness of individual SPE achieved up to 3 × 105 counts/s at room temperature. These SPEs fabricated precisely with nanoscale accuracy in hBN are expected to be good candidates for making large‐scale integrated SPEs in photonic circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To improve our understanding of the origin and evolution of mycoheterotrophic plants, we here present the chromosome-scale genome assemblies of two sibling orchid species: partially mycoheterotrophic Platanthera zijinensisand holomycoheterotrophic Platanthera guangdongensis. Comparative analysis shows that mycoheterotrophy is associated with increased substitution rates and gene loss, and the deletion of most photoreceptor genes and auxin transporter genes might be linked to the unique phenotypes of fully mycoheterotrophic orchids. Conversely, trehalase genes that catalyse the conversion of trehalose into glucose have expanded in most sequenced orchids, in line with the fact that the germination of orchid non-endosperm seeds needs carbohydrates from fungi during the protocorm stage. We further show that the mature plant of P. guangdongensis, different from photosynthetic orchids, keeps expressing trehalase genes to hijack trehalose from fungi. Therefore, we propose that mycoheterotrophy in mature orchids is a continuation of the protocorm stage by sustaining the expression of trehalase genes. Our results shed light on the molecular mechanism underlying initial, partial and full mycoheterotrophy.

Abstract

Background: Aberrant activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling by dysregulated post-translational protein modifications, especially ubiquitination is causally linked to cancer development and progression. Although Lys48-linked ubiquitination is known to regulate Wnt/β-catenin signaling, it remains largely obscure how other types of ubiquitination, such as linear ubiquitination governs its signaling activity. Methods: The expression and regulatory mechanism of linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex (LUBAC) on Wnt/β-catenin signaling was examined by immunoprecipitation, western blot and immunohistochemical staining. The ubiquitination status of β-catenin was detected by ubiquitination assay. The impacts of SHARPIN, a core component of LUBAC on malignant behaviors of gastric cancer cells were determined by various functional assays in vitro and in vivo. Results: Unlike a canonical role in promoting linear ubiquitination, SHARPIN specifically interacts with β-catenin to maintain its protein stability. Mechanistically, SHARPIN competes with the E3 ubiquitin ligase β-Trcp1 for β-catenin binding, thereby decreasing β-catenin ubiquitination levels to abolish its proteasomal degradation. Importantly, SHARPIN is required for invasiveness and malignant growth of gastric cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, a function that is largely dependent on its binding partner β-catenin. In line with these findings, elevated expression of SHARPIN in gastric cancer tissues is associated with disease malignancy and correlates with β-catenin expression levels. Conclusions: Our findings reveal a novel molecular link connecting linear ubiquitination machinery and Wnt/β-catenin signaling via SHARPIN-mediated stabilization of β-catenin. Targeting the linear ubiquitination-independent function of SHARPIN could be exploited to inhibit the hyperactive β-catenin signaling in a subset of human gastric cancers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

II-oxides wide-bandgap semiconductor, including the beryllium oxide (BeO), magnesium oxide (MgO), zinc oxide (ZnO), have large exciton binding energy (ZnO 60 meV, MgO 80 meV), high optical gain (ZnO 300 cm–1) and wide tunable band gap (3.37 eV ZnO, MgO 7.8 eV, BeO 10.6 eV), which are the advantages of achieving low-threshold laser devices in the ultraviolet wavelength. It is also one of the important candidates to replace the traditional gas arc lamp (such as mercury lamp, deuterium lamp, excimer lamp, xenon lamp etc.) as the source of deep ultraviolet and even vacuum ultraviolet. Although, during the past decades, the ZnO-based pn homojunction devices have made great progress in the near-UV electroluminescence, but as the band gap broadens, the acceptor (or donor) ionization energy becomes higher (On the order of hundreds meV), which causing the room temperature equivalent thermal energy (26 meV) cannot make the impurities ionizing effectively. In addition, the self-compensation effect in the doping process further weakens the carrier yield. These above drawbacks have become the bottleneck that hinders II-oxides wide-bandgap semiconductor from achieving ultraviolet laser devices and expanding to shorter wavelengths, and are also a common problem faced by other wide-bandgap semiconductor materials. The regulation of the electrical and luminescent properties of materials often depends on the control of critical defect states. The rich point defects and their combination types make the II-oxides wide-bandgap semiconductors an important platform for studying defect physics. For the identification and characterization of specific point defects, it is expected to discover and further construct shallower defect states, which will provide a basis for the regulation of electrical performance. In this paper, recent research results of II-oxides wide-bandgap semiconductors will be described from three aspects: high-quality epitaxial growth, impurity and point defects, p-type doping and ultraviolet electroluminescence. Through the overview of related research works, II-oxides wide-bandgap semiconductors are clarified as deep ultraviolet light sources materials. Meanwhile, indicates that the key to the regulation of electrical performance in the future lies in the regulation of point defects.

Abstract

Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) has been extensively used in several plant species as an accurate technique for gene expression analysis. However, the expression level of a target gene may be misconstrued due to unstable expression of the reference genes under different experimental conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically evaluate these reference genes before experiments are conducted. Recently, more and more studies have focused on gene expression in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). In this study, ten putative reference genes were chosen to identify expression stability by using geNorm and NormFinder statistical algorithms in ten different pepper sample pools, including those from different plant tissues (root, stem, leaf and flower) and from plants treated with hormones (salicylic acid and gibberellic acid) and abiotic stresses (cold, heat, salt and drought). EF1α and UEP exhibited the most stable expression across all of the tested pepper samples. For abiotic stress or different hormone treatment, the ranking of candidate reference genes was not completely consistent, except for EF1α which showed a relatively stable expression level. For different tissues, the expression of Actin1 was stable and it was considered an appropriate reference gene. It is concluded that EF1α, UEP and Actin1 are suitable reference genes for reliable qRT-PCR data normalization for the tissues and experimental conditions used in this experiment.

Abstract

Chenorchis, a new orchid genus belonging to C. singchii with tropical orchid features, was found in subtropical regions of Gaoligong Mountain in Yunnan Province, China. This taxon undoubtedly belongs to Trib. Vandeae due to its comparatively advanced epiphytic and monopodial characteristics with very hard pollinia and long stipe. It is akin to Ascocentrum and Holcoglossum, from which it differs by its lip lacking appendage, side-lobes arising from both sides of the mid-lobe rather than the entrance to the spur; large stigmatic cave; very large rostellum, conspicuously broader than the column, spreading downward; pollinia each with a distinct caudicle attached to the incurved subterminal portion of a common stipe. Phylogenetic analysis shows that it may be of tropical region originally and evolve into a new genus due to changed environment, indicating that the main motivation of angiosperm differentiation is to bring forth more ecological opportunities. A further examination of reproductive ecology, especially pollination mechanism and breeding system, proved that this species has formed many mechanisms to promote selfing and inbreeding, such as symbiosis with ants (Temnothorax sp.), utilization of ants for short-distant pollination, opening of flowers simultaneously to increase the frequency of geitonogamy, efficient dispersal and growth of seeds, and crowded communities to improve the possibility of inbreeding. All the adaptive changes above turn into necessary conditions for their survival in subtropical regions. The reproductive strategy of this unique life history shows that this immigrant species autonomously passes the genes on to future generations to remain their adaptability, by quickly occupying the habitat. It is a successful strategy in habitat expansion that inflorescence produces a lot of flowers to facilitate geitonogamy, whose significance may extend to provide evidence that the occurrence of plants' sex results from the trade-offs of the fluctuation of habitat in evolution.
