Search

High energy collider neutrinos have been observed for the first time by the FASER$\nu$ experiment. The detected spectrum of collider neutrinos scattering off nucleons can be used to probe neutrinophilic mediators with GeV-scale masses. We find that constraints on the pseudoscalar (axial vector) neutrinophilic mediator are close to the scalar (vector) case since they have similar cross section in the neutrino massless limit. We perform an analysis on the measured muon spectra at FASER$\nu$, and find that the bounds on the vector mediator from the current FASER$\nu$ data are comparable to the existing bounds at $m_{Z^\prime}\approx 0.2$ GeV. We also study the sensitivities to a neutrinophilic mediator at future Forward Physics Facilities including FLArE and FASER$\nu$2 by using both the missing transverse momentum and the charge identification information. We find that FLArE and FASER$\nu$2 can impose stronger bounds on both the scalar and vector neutrinophilic mediators than the existing bounds. The constraints on the scalar mediator can reach 0.08 (0.1) for $m_\phi\lesssim1$ GeV with (without) muon charge identification at FASER$\nu$2., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

We derive the dimension-8 standard-model effective theory (SMEFT) contact terms relevant for vector-pair production at the LHC and lepton colliders. We first list the relevant dimension-8 massless SMEFT amplitudes, and then obtain the low-energy amplitudes using on-shell Higgsing. In all cases, the contributions we calculate are the leading-order contributions to 4-point contact-terms; the dimension-6 SMEFT merely corrects the three-point couplings entering the amplitudes. Since they are given in terms of physical quantities, namely momenta and polarizations, the results allow for a direct mapping of EFT effects to low-energy observables. The vector amplitudes are sensitive to both anomalous vector couplings and Higgs self-couplings. The left-handed fermion amplitudes feature SU(2) violating effects first generated at dimension-8. We also compare our results to HEFT predictions. Interestingly, the dimension-8 SMEFT populates almost all the novel structures generated by the dimension-8 HEFT.

The Electron-Ion Collider~(EIC), a forthcoming powerful high-luminosity facility, represents an exciting opportunity to explore new physics. In this article, we study the potential of the EIC to probe the coupling between axion-like particles~(ALPs) and photons in coherent scattering. The ALPs can be produced via photon fusion and decay back to two photons inside the EIC detector. In a prompt-decay search, we find that the EIC can set the most stringent bound for $m_a \lesssim 20\,\GeV$ and probe the effective scales $\Lambda \lesssim 10^{5}\,$GeV. In a displaced-vertex search, which requires adopting an EM calorimeter technology that provides directionality, the EIC could probe ALPs with $m_a \lesssim 1\,\GeV$ at effective scales $\Lambda \lesssim 10^{7}\,\GeV$. Combining the two search strategies, the EIC can probe a significant portion of unexplored parameter space in the $0.2 < m_a <20\,\GeV$ mass range., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

We present a comprehensive study on how to distinguish the properties of heavy dijet resonances at hadron colliders. A variety of spins, chiral couplings, charges, and QCD color representations are considered. Distinguishing the different color representations is particularly difficult at hadron colliders. To determine the QCD color structure, we consider a third jet radiated in a resonant dijet event. We show that the relative rates of three-jet versus two-jet processes are sensitive to the color representation of the resonance. We also show analytically that the antennae radiation pattern of soft radiation depends on the color structure of dijet events and develops an observable that is sensitive to the antennae patterns. Finally, we exploit a Convolutional Neural Network with Machine Learning techniques to differentiate the radiation patterns from different colored resonances and find encouraging results to discriminate them. Most antineutrinos produced in a nuclear reactor have energies below the inverse beta decay threshold, and have not yet been detected. We show that a coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment with an ultra-low energy threshold like NUCLEUS can measure the flux of reactor neutrinos below 1.8 MeV. Using a regularized unfolding procedure, we find that a meaningful upper bound can be placed on the low energy flux, but the existence of the neutron capture component cannot be established., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. We derive the contact terms contributing to the four-point amplitudes of the standard-model particles, keeping terms with up to quartic energy growth. Imposing just the unbroken low-energy symmetry, and treating the electroweak gauge bosons and the Higgs as independent degrees of freedom, we obtain the most general four-point contact-term amplitudes, corresponding to the HEFT framework. The contact terms are spanned by a basis of Stripped Contact Terms (SCTs), which carry the polarization information, multiplied by polynomials in the Mandelstam invariants. For terms with quadratic energy growth, we also derive the low-energy SMEFT predictions, via on-shell Higgsing of the massless SMEFT contact terms. We discuss several aspects of bottom-up versus top-down on-shell derivations of the HEFT and SMEFT amplitudes, highlighting in particular the simple counting of HEFT dimensions in the on-shell approach and the transparent relation between perturbative unitarity and gauge-invariance in the little-group covariant massive spinor formalism. Our results provide a formulation of EFT analyses directly in terms of observable quantities. In this paper, we present the differential decay distributions for $\bar B \to D^{(*)} \ell \bar{X}$ decays with a massive right-handed neutrino in the low-energy effective field theory framework and show how the massive effects of the RH neutrinos can explain the positive value of the difference in forward-backward asymmetries, $\Delta A_{\text{FB}}\equiv A_{\text{FB}}^\mu-A_{\text{FB}}^e$, tentatively inferred from Belle data. We assess the ability of the Belle II experiment to probe the Dirac or Majorana nature of a massive right-handed neutrino (RHN) $N$ in the MeV to GeV mass range. We consider the production and decay of RHNs to proceed via new interactions described by the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) extended with right-handed neutrino fields (SMNEFT), and not via mass mixing with active neutrinos. We find that Belle II has the potential to discover $N$ if kinematically accessible. We perform detailed simulations of the angular distributions of lepton pairs from the decay of $N$ produced in two-body and three-body decays of $B$ mesons. We show that for $m_N$ above 100 MeV, Belle II can distinguish between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos at more than the 5$\sigma$ CL for most operators, and the combination of the production and decay operators can be identified from the subsequent decay of the heavy neutrino. Also, the production operators can be identified using three-body $B$ meson decay for any $m_N$ if the $B\to D\ell N$ and $B\to D^*\ell N$ events can be well separated., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, 12 tables. We calculate the complete differential decay distributions for the $B$ meson decays, $\bar B \to D^{(*)} \ell \bar{X}$, to a massive right-handed (RH) neutrino in the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) framework. We reiterate that there is significant complementarity between low-energy experiments and high-energy colliders in exploring new physics associated with neutrino properties and their mass generation mechanisms. Signals of the new physics in the two energy regimes may be correlated with each other from the same underlying dynamics. The recent evidence for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) in the NCC-1701 germanium detector using antineutrinos from the Dresden-II nuclear reactor is in good agreement with standard model expectations. However, we show that a $2\sigma$ improvement in the fit to the data can be achieved if the quenching factor is described by a modified Lindhard model. We also place constraints on the parameter space of a light vector or scalar mediator that couples to neutrinos and quarks, and on a neutrino magnetic moment. We demonstrate that the constraints are quite sensitive to the quenching factor at low recoil energies by comparing constraints for the standard Lindhard model with those by marginalizing over the two parameters of the modified Lindhard model., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Recent measurements of the germanium quenching factor deviate significantly from the predictions of the standard Lindhard model for nuclear recoil energies below a keV. This departure may be explained by the Migdal effect in neutron scattering on germanium. We show that the Migdal effect on the quenching factor can mimic the signal of a light Z' or light scalar mediator in coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering experiments with reactor antineutrinos. It is imperative that the quenching factor of nuclei with low recoil energy thresholds be precisely measured close to threshold to avoid such confusion. The Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) augmented with right-handed neutrinos. Building on our previous work, arXiv:2010.12109, we calculate the Yukawa coupling contributions to the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the 11 dimension-six four-fermion SMNEFT operators. We consider a non-Abelian dark SU(2)$_{\rm D}$ model where the dark sector couples to the Standard Model (SM) through a Higgs portal. We investigate two different scenarios of the dark sector scalars with $Z_2$ symmetry, with Higgs portal interactions that can introduce mixing between the SM Higgs boson and the SM singlet scalars in the dark sector. We utilize the existing collider results of the Higgs signal rate, direct heavy Higgs searches, and electroweak precision observables to constrain the model parameters. The $\text{SU(2)}_{\text{D}}$ partially breaks into $\text{U(1)}_{\text{D}}$ gauge group by the scalar sector. The resulting two stable massive dark gauge bosons and pseudo-Goldstone bosons can be viable cold dark matter candidates, while the massless gauge boson from the unbroken $\text{U(1)}_{\text{D}}$ subgroup is a dark radiation and can introduce long-range attractive dark matter (DM) self-interaction, which can alleviate the small-scale structure issues. We study in detail the pattern of strong first-order phase transition and gravitational wave (GW) production triggered by the dark sector symmetry breaking, and further evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio for several proposed space interferometer missions. We conclude that the rich physics in the dark sector may be observable with the current and future measurements at colliders, DM experiments, and GW interferometers., Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is an effective theory with Standard Model (SM) gauge-invariant operators constructed only from SM and right-handed neutrino fields. For the full set of dimension-six SMNEFT operators, we present the gauge coupling terms of the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for renormalization group evolution (RGE) of the Wilson coefficients between a new physics scale and the electroweak scale. We find that the SMNEFT operators can be divided into five subsets which are closed under RGE. Our results apply for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We constrain general Dirac neutrino interactions based on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework extended with right-handed neutrinos $N$ (SMNEFT) using deep inelastic and coherent elastic neutrino scattering, nuclear beta decay, and meson decay data, and high energy electron-proton and proton-proton collider data. We compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of the low-energy effective field theory (LEFT) below the electroweak scale and of SMNEFT above the electroweak scale. The tree-level matching between LEFT and SMNEFT is performed at the electroweak scale. Currently, the most stringent limits on scalar and tensor interactions arise from pseudoscalar meson decays and the LHC measurements at the per mille level. In the future, the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) has the potential to reach the $10^{-4}$ level and LHeC can play an important role under certain theoretical assumptions., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. We study how nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) may be probed by a combination of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, neutrino oscillation and collider data, from COHERENT, DUNE, T2HK and the high-luminosity (HL) LHC. We focus on NSI induced by a new flavored gauge boson $Z'$ in a generic anomaly-free ultraviolet-complete model. For $Z'$ masses above 10 GeV, the HL-LHC has the best sensitivity regardless of the flavor structure of the model. For masses between 0.01 GeV-10 GeV, current LHCb data and future COHERENT data have the best sensitivity unless the $Z'$ couplings to the first and second generation leptons are suppressed, in which case DUNE and T2HK have the best sensitivity. For $Z'$ masses between about 5 MeV-20 MeV, DUNE and T2HK have the best sensitivity. We evaluate the impact of one-loop electroweak corrections to the spin-independent dark matter (DM) scattering cross-section with nucleons ($\sigma_{\rm SI}$), in models with a so-called blind spot for direct detection, where the leading-order prediction for the relevant DM coupling to the Higgs boson, and therefore $\sigma_{\rm SI}$, are vanishingly small. Adopting a simple illustrative scenario in which the DM state results from the mixing of electroweak singlet and doublet fermions, we compute the relevant higher order corrections to the scalar effective operator contributions to $\sigma_{\rm SI}$, stemming from both triangle and box diagrams involving the SM and dark sector fields. It is observed that in a significant region of the singlet-doublet model-space, the one-loop corrections ``unblind'' the tree-level blind spots and lead to detectable SI scattering rates at future multi-ton scale liquid Xenon experiments, with $\sigma_{\rm SI}$ reaching values up to a few times $10^{-47} {~\rm cm}^2$, for a weak scale DM with $\mathcal{O}(1)$ Yukawa couplings. Furthermore, we find that there always exists a new SI blind spot at the next-to-leading order, which is perturbatively shifted from the leading order one in the singlet-doublet mass parameters. For comparison, we also present the tree-level spin-dependent scattering cross-sections near the SI blind-spot region, that could lead to a larger signal. Recently hints of lepton flavor non-universality emerged in the BaBar and LHCb experiments. In this paper we propose tests of lepton universality in $\nu_{\tau}$ scattering. To parametrize the new physics we adopt an effective Lagrangian approach and consider the neutrino deep inelastic scattering processes $\nu_{\tau}+ N \to \tau + X$ and $\nu_{\mu}+ N \to \mu + X$ where we assume the largest new physics effects are in the $\tau$ sector. We also consider an explicit leptoquark model in our calculations. In order to make comparison with the standard model and also in order to cancel out the uncertainties of the parton distribution functions, we consider the ratio of total and differential cross sections of tau-neutrino to muon-neutrino scattering.
