Cellular signaling data have become increasingly indispensable in analyzing residents' travel characteristic. Especially with the enhancement of positioning quality in 4G-LTE and 5G wireless communication systems, it is expected that the identification accuracy of fine-grained travel modes will achieve an optimal level. However, due to data privacy issues, the empirical evaluation of the performance of different identification methods is not yet sufficient. This paper builds a travel mode identification model that utilizes the gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network. With 24 features as input, this method can identify four traffic modes, including walking, bicycle, car, and bus. Moreover, in cooperation with the operator, we organized an experiment collecting cellular signaling data, as well as the corresponding GPS data. Using the collected dataset as ground-truth data, the performance of the method presented in this paper and other popular methods is verified and compared. The results indicate that the GRU-based method has a better performance, with a precision, recall, and F score of 90.5%. Taking F score as an example, the outcome of the GRU-based method is about 6% to 7% higher than methods based on other machine learning algorithms. Considering the identification accuracy and model training time comprehensively, the method suggested in this paper outperforms the other three deep learning-based methods, namely, recurrent neural network (RNN), long short-term memory network (LSTM), and bidirectional long short-term memory network (Bi-LSTM). A proper public transportation system should be economically efficient to improve its sustainability and competitiveness. The superfluous provision of conventional bus services in areas with a weak or scattered travel demand distribution might result in a waste of transport capacity. This study proposes an operation plan optimization model based on the characteristics and cost composition of conventional and customized bus services, which systematically analyzes the feasibility of fully or partially replacing conventional bus services with customized bus services. A mixed-integer planning model and a hybrid genetic algorithm are used to optimize the operation plan for specific travel demands and supply capacities. Then, a sensitivity analysis of key factors is carried out to identify the optimal operation mode under different circumstances. Cellular data is a sequence of base station‐interaction data that records user ID, timestamp, location area code (LAC), and cell identity (CID). With long observation periods, the data allows traffic planners to analyze coarse‐granularity user travel behaviours at low costs. However, utilizing cellular data for urban planning is not an easy task as the data lacks user socioeconomic attributes due to privacy issues. The data is also challenging to recognize user activity types. This paper proposed an activity‐based model (ABM) with skeleton schedule constraints for multi‐day cellular data. The model first infers the activity pattern and home location. Then it predicts start time, duration, and locations separately for primary and secondary activities. Next, the model infers the travel mode and path considering user multi‐day travel behaviour, path non‐linear coefficient, and transfers. Finally, a time adjustment module is proposed to avoid time conflicts in consecutive activities. The proposed activity‐based model is validated at activity, travel, and path levels. A new form of mobile payment, Quick Response (QR) code, has been a popular way of paying bus fares in China since 2017. Compared with conventional payment methods, cash or IC card, QR code shows a lot of differences in response time, recognition accuracy, and payment procedure, which significantly influences the boarding service time (BST) for passengers. However, no research has considered its efficiency. This study, therefore, tries to fill this gap and investigate its influence on BST. Sufficient ride-check data were collected, and the influence of the QR code payment method on BST was examined through a set of regression models. Passengers pay the bus fare with different payment methods as their first choice; nevertheless, when the payment fails, they may transfer among them. According to the payment choice, result, and process, we introduce the first-choice-based, the last-choice-based, and the choice-transfer-based models, respectively. The scenario with delays in calling out the QR code was considered in the choice-transfer-based model. The onboard crowdedness was regarded as a categorical variable to determine the regime of the boarding process in all models. Compressed sensing theory is widely used in the field of fault signal diagnosis and image processing. Sparse recovery is one of the core concepts of this theory. In this paper, we proposed a sparse recovery algorithm using a smoothed l0 norm and a randomized coordinate descent (RCD), then applied it to sparse signal recovery and image denoising. We adopted a new strategy to express the (P0) problem approximately and put forward a sparse recovery algorithm using RCD. In the computer simulation experiments, we compared the performance of this algorithm to other typical methods. The results show that our algorithm possesses higher precision in sparse signal recovery. Moreover, it achieves higher signal to noise ratio (SNR) and faster convergence speed in image denoising.
