Iceberg melting is a critical factor for climate change, contributing to rising sea levels and climate change. However, the shape of an iceberg is an often neglected aspect of its melting process. Our study investigates the influence of different ice shapes and ambient flow velocities on melt rates by conducting direct numerical simulations. Our study focuses on the ellipsoidal shape, with the aspect ratio as the control parameter. It plays a crucial role in the melting process, resulting in significant variations in the melt rate between different shapes. Without flow, the optimal shape for a minimal melt rate is the disk (2D) or sphere (3D), due to the minimal surface area. However, as the ambient flow velocity increases, the optimal shape changes with the aspect ratio. We find that ice with an elliptical shape (when the long axis is aligned with the flow direction) can melt up to 10\% slower than a circular shape when exposed to flowing water. We provide a quantitative theoretical explanation for this optimal shape, based on the competition between surface area effects and convective heat transfer effects. Our findings provide insight into the interplay between phase transitions and ambient flows, contributing to our understanding of the iceberg melting process and highlighting the need to consider the aspect ratio effect in estimates of iceberg melt rates.

The atomic exchange effect will lead to a significant increase in the probability density of $\beta$ decays below a few keV. This effect is very important for scientific experiments that performed by low-energy electron spectroscopy measurements. However, the atomic exchange effect involves multi-electron interactions, especially for a system with 82 electrons such as lead. Different parameters will lead to different trends in the energy spectrum predicted by the theory, so it is urgent to carry out experimental measurements to provide parameter limits for the theory. The probability increase brought about by the atomic exchange effect is most obvious near 0keV, and the $\beta$ energy spectrum is accurately measured near this energy point, so as to provide constraints for the physical model of atomic exchange. However, it is extremely difficult to measure the $\beta$ energy spectrum at 0keV due to the limitations of electronic noise and internal conversion effects. The excited decay path of $^{210}$Pb was taken as the observation object,by measuring the total energy spectrum of $\beta$ rays and cascaded gamma rays, the precise measurement of the $\beta$ energy spectrum near 0keV has been completed. The analysis of the $\beta$ energy spectrum of $^{210}$Pb gives the following conclusions. The experimental results first verified the theory that the exchange effect causes the probability increase at the low energy end near 0keV. At the same time, the experimental results are higher than the existing predictions of the atomic exchange effect. At least for Pb element, all the electron shells have played a role in improving the probability density of the low end of the $\beta$ energy spectrum. This discovery will promote the theoretical calculation of the $\beta$ energy spectrum of $^{214}$Pb, at the same time, it also indicates that the reactor neutrinos have a higher probability density at the omnipotent end.

The Grains and Oilseeds Index (GOI) and its sub-indices of wheat, maize, soyabeans, rice, and barley are daily price indexes reflect the price changes of the global spot markets of staple agro-food crops. In this paper, we carry out a visibility graph (VG) analysis of the GOI and its five sub-indices. Our findings reveal that the degree distributions of the VGs, except for rice, exhibit exponentially truncated power-law tails, while the rice VG conforms to a power-law tail. The average clustering coefficients of the six VGs are quite large ($>0.5$) and exhibit a nice power-law relation with respect to the average degrees of the VGs. For each VG, the clustering coefficients of nodes are inversely proportional to their degrees for large degrees and are correlated to their degrees as a power law for small degrees. All the six VGs exhibit small-world characteristics. The degree-degree correlation coefficients shows that the VGs for maize and soyabeans indices exhibit weak assortative mixing patterns, while the other four VGs are weakly disassortative. The average nearest neighbor degree functions have similar patterns, and each function shows a more complex mixing pattern which decreases for small degrees, increases for mediate degrees, and decreases again for large degrees., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The presence of salt in ocean water strongly affects the melt rate and the shape evolution of ice, both of utmost relevance in geophysical and ocean flow and thus for the climate. To get a better quantitative understanding of the physical mechanics at play in ice melting in salty water, we numerically investigate the lateral melting of an ice block in stably stratified saline water, using a realistic, nonlinear equation of state (EOS). The developing ice shape from our numerical results shows good agreement with the experiments and theory from Huppert & Turner (J. Fluid Mech. 100, 367 (1980)). Furthermore, we find that the melt rate of ice depends non-monotonically on the mean ambient salinity: It first decreases for increasing salt concentration until a local minimum is attained, and then increases again. This non-monotonic behavior of the ice melt rate is due to the competition among salinity-driven buoyancy, temperature-driven buoyancy, and salinity-induced stratification. We develop a theoretical model based on the energy balance which gives a prediction of the salt concentration for which the melt rate is minimal, and is consistent with our data. Our findings give insight into the interplay between phase transitions and double-diffusive convective flows.

We numerically investigate turbulent Rayleigh-B\'enard convection with gas bubbles attached to the hot plate, mimicking a core feature in electrolysis, catalysis, or boiling. The existence of bubbles on the plate reduces the global heat transfer due to the much lower thermal conductivity of gases as compared to liquids and changes the structure of the boundary layers. The numerical simulations are performed in 3D at Prandtl number Pr=4.38 (water) and Rayleigh number $10^7\le Ra \le10^8$. For simplicity, we assume the bubbles to be equally-sized and having pinned contact lines. We vary the total gas-covered area fraction $0.18 \le S_0 \le 0.62$, the relative bubble height $0.02\le h/H \le0.05$ (where $H$ is the height of the Rayleigh-B\'enard cell), the bubble number $40 \le n \le 144$, and their spatial distribution. In all cases, asymmetric temperature profiles are observed, which we quantitatively explain based on the heat flux conservation at each horizontal section. We further propose the idea of using an equivalent single-phase setup to mimic the system with attached bubbles. Based on this equivalence, we can calculate the heat transfer. Without introducing any free parameter, the predictions for the Nusselt number, the upper and lower thermal boundary layer thicknesses, and the mean centre temperature well agree with the numerical results. Finally, our predictions also work for the cases with much larger Pr (e.g. $400$), which indicates that our results can also be applied to predict the mass transfer in water electrolysis with bubbles attached to the electrode surface or in catalysis., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

The Transition Edge Sensor is extremely sensitive to the change of temperature, combined with the high-Z metal of a certain thickness, it can realize the high energy resolution measurement of particles such as X-rays. X-rays with energies below 10 keV have very weak penetrating ability, so only a few microns thick of gold or bismuth can obtain quantum efficiency higher than 70\%. Therefore, the entire structure of the TES X-ray detector in this energy range can be realized in the microfabrication process. However, for X-rays or gamma rays from 10 keV to 200 keV, sub-millimeter absorber layers are required, which cannot be realized by microfabrication process. This paper first briefly introduces a set of TES X-ray detectors and their auxiliary systems built by ShanghaiTech University, then focus on the introduction of the TES $\gamma$-ray detector, with absorber based on an sub-millimeter lead-tin alloy sphere. The detector has a quantum efficiency above 70\% near 100 keV, and an energy resolution of about 161.5eV@59.5keV., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

We numerically investigate turbulent Rayleigh-B\'enard convection within two immiscible fluid layers, aiming to understand how the layer thickness and fluid properties affect the heat transfer (characterized by the Nusselt number $Nu$) in two-layer systems. Both two- and three-dimensional simulations are performed at fixed global Rayleigh number $Ra=10^8$, Prandtl number $Pr=4.38$, and Weber number $We=5$. We vary the relative thickness of the upper layer between $0.01 \le \alpha \le 0.99$ and the thermal conductivity coefficient ratio of the two liquids between $0.1 \le \lambda_k \le 10$. Two flow regimes are observed: In the first regime at $0.04\le\alpha\le0.96$, convective flows appear in both layers and $Nu$ is not sensitive to $\alpha$. In the second regime at $\alpha\le0.02$ or $\alpha\ge0.98$, convective flow only exists in the thicker layer, while the thinner one is dominated by pure conduction. In this regime, $Nu$ is sensitive to $\alpha$. To predict $Nu$ in the system in which the two layers are separated by a unique interface, we apply the Grossmann-Lohse theory for both individual layers and impose heat flux conservation at the interface. Without introducing any free parameter, the predictions for $Nu$ and for the temperature at the interface well agree with our numerical results and previous experimental data., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

This numerical study presents a simple but extremely effective way to considerably enhance heat transport in turbulent multiphase flows, namely by using oleophilic walls. As a model system, we pick the Rayleigh-B\'enard setup, filled with an oil-water mixture. For oleophilic walls, e.g. using only $10\%$ volume fraction of oil in water, we observe a remarkable heat transport enhancement of more than $100\%$ as compared to the pure water case. In contrast, for oleophobic walls, the enhancement is then only about $20\%$ as compared to pure water. The physical explanation of the highly-efficient heat transport for oleophilic walls is that thermal plumes detach from the oil-rich boundary layer and are transported together with the oil phase. In the bulk, the oil-water interface prevents the plumes to mix with the turbulent water bulk. To confirm this physical picture, we show that the minimum amount of oil to achieve the maximum heat transport is set by the volume fraction of the thermal plumes. Our findings provide guidelines of how to optimize heat transport in thermal turbulence. Moreover, the physical insight of how coherent structures are coupled with one phase of a two-phase system has very general applicability for controlling transport properties in other turbulent multiphase flows., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figues

With the aim of efficiently simulating three-dimensional multiphase turbulent flows with a phase-field method, we propose a new discretization scheme for the biharmonic term (the 4th-order derivative term) of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. This novel scheme can significantly reduce the computational cost while retaining the same accuracy as the original procedure. Our phase-field method is built on top of a direct numerical simulation solver, named AFiD (www.afid.eu) and open-sourced by our research group. It relies on a pencil distributed parallel strategy and a FFT-based Poisson solver. To deal with large density ratios between the two phases, a pressure split method [1] has been applied to the Poisson solver. To further reduce computational costs, we implement a multiple-resolution algorithm which decouples the discretizations for the Navier-Stokes equations and the scalar equation: while a stretched wall-resolving grid is used for the Navier-Stokes equations, for the Cahn-Hilliard equation we use a fine uniform mesh. The present method shows excellent computational performance for large-scale computation: on meshes up to 8 billion nodes and 3072 CPU cores, a multiphase flow needs only slightly less than 1.5 times the CPU time of the single-phase flow solver on the same grid. The present method is validated by comparing the results to previous studies for the cases of drop deformation in shear flow, including the convergence test with mesh refinement, and breakup of a rising buoyant bubble with density ratio up to 1000. Finally, we simulate the breakup of a big drop and the coalescence of O(10^3) drops in turbulent Rayleigh-B\'enard convection at a Rayleigh number of $10^8$, observing good agreement with theoretical results., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures

Vertical convection is investigated using direct numerical simulations over a wide range of Rayleigh numbers $10^7\le Ra\le10^{14}$ with fixed Prandtl number $Pr=10$, in a two-dimensional convection cell with unit aspect ratio. It is found that the dependence of the mean vertical centre temperature gradient $S$ on $Ra$ shows three different regimes: In regime I ($Ra \lesssim 5\times10^{10}$), $S$ is almost independent of $Ra$; In the newly identified regime II ($5\times10^{10} \lesssim Ra \lesssim 10^{13}$), $S$ first increases with increasing $Ra$ (regime ${\rm{II}}_a$), reaches its maximum and then decreases again (regime ${\rm{II}}_b$); In regime III ($Ra\gtrsim10^{13}$), $S$ again becomes only weakly dependent on $Ra$, being slightly smaller than in regime I. The transitions between diffeereent regimes are discussd. In the three different regimes, significantly different flow organizations are identified: In regime I and regime ${\rm{II}}_a$, the location of the maximal horizontal velocity is close to the top and bottom walls; However, in regime ${\rm{II}}_b$ and regime III, banded zonal flow structures develop and the maximal horizontal velocity now is in the bulk region. The different flow organizations in the three regimes are also reflected in the scaling exponents in the effective power law scalings $Nu\sim Ra^\beta$ and $Re\sim Ra^\gamma$. In regime I, the fitted scaling exponents ($\beta\approx0.26$ and $\gamma\approx0.51$) are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predication of $\beta=1/4$ and $\gamma=1/2$ for laminar VC (Shishkina, {\it{Phys. Rev. E.}} 2016, 93, 051102). However, in regimes II and III, $\beta$ increases to a value close to 1/3 and $\gamma$ decreases to a value close to 4/9. The stronger $Ra$ dependence of $Nu$ is related to the ejection of plumes and larger local heat flux at the walls., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

It is commonly accepted that the breakup criteria of drops or bubbles in turbulence is governed by surface tension and inertia. However, also {\it{buoyancy}} can play an important role at breakup. In order to better understand this role, here we numerically study Rayleigh-B\'enard convection for two immiscible fluid layers, in order to identify the effects of buoyancy on interface breakup. We explore the parameter space spanned by the Weber number $5\leq We \leq 5000$ (the ratio of inertia to surface tension) and the density ratio between the two fluids $0.001 \leq \Lambda \leq 1$, at fixed Rayleigh number $Ra=10^8$ and Prandtl number $Pr=1$. At low $We$, the interface undulates due to plumes. When $We$ is larger than a critical value, the interface eventually breaks up. Depending on $\Lambda$, two breakup types are observed: The first type occurs at small $\Lambda \ll 1$ (e.g. air-water systems) when local filament thicknesses exceed the Hinze length scale. The second, strikingly different, type occurs at large $\Lambda$ with roughly $0.5 < \Lambda \le 1$ (e.g. oil-water systems): The layers undergo a periodic overturning caused by buoyancy overwhelming surface tension. For both types the breakup criteria can be derived from force balance arguments and show good agreement with the numerical results., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures
