Large Language Models (LLMs) have been widely applied in summarization due to their speedy and high-quality text generation. Summarization for sensemaking involves information compression and insight extraction. Human guidance in sensemaking tasks can prioritize and cluster relevant information for LLMs. However, users must translate their cognitive thinking into natural language to communicate with LLMs. Can we use more readable and operable visual representations to guide the summarization process for sensemaking? Therefore, we propose introducing an intermediate step--a schematic visual workspace for human sensemaking--before the LLM generation to steer and refine the summarization process. We conduct a series of proof-of-concept experiments to investigate the potential for enhancing the summarization by GPT-4 through visual workspaces. Leveraging a textual sensemaking dataset with a ground truth summary, we evaluate the impact of a human-generated visual workspace on LLM-generated summarization of the dataset and assess the effectiveness of space-steered summarization. We categorize several types of extractable information from typical human workspaces that can be injected into engineered prompts to steer the LLM summarization. The process of fashion design usually involves sketching, refining, and coloring, with designers drawing inspiration from various images to fuel their creative endeavors. However, conventional image search methods often yield irrelevant results, impeding the design process. Moreover, creating and coloring sketches can be time-consuming and demanding, acting as a bottleneck in the design workflow. In this work, we introduce HAIGEN (Human-AI Collaboration for GENeration), an efficient fashion design system for Human-AI collaboration developed to aid designers. Specifically, HAIGEN consists of four modules. T2IM, located in the cloud, generates reference inspiration images directly from text prompts. With three other modules situated locally, the I2SM batch generates the image material library into a certain designer-style sketch material library. The SRM recommends similar sketches in the generated library to designers for further refinement, and the STM colors the refined sketch according to the styles of inspiration images. Through our system, any designer can perform local personalized fine-tuning and leverage the powerful generation capabilities of large models in the cloud, streamlining the entire design development process. Given that our approach integrates both cloud and local model deployment schemes, it effectively safeguards design privacy by avoiding the need to upload personalized data from local designers. We validated the effectiveness of each module through extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments. Datasets of visualization play a crucial role in automating data-driven visualization pipelines, serving as the foundation for supervised model training and algorithm benchmarking. In this paper, we survey the literature on visualization datasets and provide a comprehensive overview of existing visualization datasets, including their data types, formats, supported tasks, and openness. We propose a what-why-how model for visualization datasets, considering the content of the dataset (what), the supported tasks (why), and the dataset construction process (how). This model provides a clear understanding of the diversity and complexity of visualization datasets. Additionally, we highlight the challenges faced by existing visualization datasets, including the lack of standardization in data types and formats and the limited availability of large-scale datasets. We propose AutoLegend to generate interactive visualization legends using online learning with user feedback. AutoLegend accurately extracts symbols and channels from visualizations and then generates quality legends. AutoLegend enables a two-way interaction between legends and interactions, including highlighting, filtering, data retrieval, and retargeting. After analyzing visualization legends from IEEE VIS papers over the past 20 years, we summarized the design space and evaluation metrics for legend design in visualizations, particularly charts. The generation process consists of three interrelated components: a legend search agent, a feedback model, and an adversarial loss model. The search agent determines suitable legend solutions by exploring the design space and receives guidance from the feedback model through scalar scores. The feedback model is continuously updated by the adversarial loss model based on user input. Storyboarding is an established method for designing user experiences. Generative AI can support this process by helping designers quickly create visual narratives. However, existing tools only focus on accurate text-to-image generation. Currently, it is not clear how to effectively support the entire creative process of storyboarding and how to develop AI-powered tools to support designers' individual workflows. In this work, we iteratively developed and implemented StoryDiffusion, a system that integrates text-to-text and text-to-image models, to support the generation of narratives and images in a single pipeline. With a user study, we observed 12 UX designers using the system for both concept ideation and illustration tasks. Our findings identified AI-directed vs. user-directed creative strategies in both tasks and revealed the importance of supporting the interchange between narrative iteration and image generation. We also found effects of the design tasks on their strategies and preferences, providing insights for future development.

Given the widespread use of procedural instructions with non-linear access (situational information retrieval), there has been a proposal to accommodate both linear and non-linear usage in instructional design. However, it has received inadequate scholarly attention, leading to limited exploration. This paper introduces Self-Initiated Explorable (SelfIE) instructions, a new design concept aiming at enabling users to navigate instructions flexibly by blending linear and non-linear access according to individual needs and situations during tasks. Using a Wizard-of-Oz protocol, we initially embodied SelfIE instructions within a toy-block assembly context and compared it with baseline instructions offering linear-only access (N=21). Results show a 71% increase in user preferences due to its ease of reflecting individual differences, empirically supporting the prior proposal. Besides, our observations identify three strategies for flexible access and suggest the potential of enhancing the user experience by considering cognitive processes and implementing flexible access in a wearable configuration. Following the design phase, we translated the WoZ-based design embodiment as working prototypes on the tablet and OHMD to assess usability and compare user experience between the two configurations (N=8). Our data yields valuable insights into managing the trade-offs between the two configurations, thereby facilitating more effective flexible access development.

We propose an approach to manipulate existing interactive visualizations to answer users' natural language queries. We analyze the natural language tasks and propose a design space of a hierarchical task structure, which allows for a systematic decomposition of complex queries. We introduce a four-level visualization manipulation space to facilitate in-situ manipulations for visualizations, enabling a fine-grained control over the visualization elements. Our methods comprise two essential components: the natural language-to-task translator and the visualization manipulation parser. The natural language-to-task translator employs advanced NLP techniques to extract structured, hierarchical tasks from natural language queries, even those with varying degrees of ambiguity. The visualization manipulation parser leverages the hierarchical task structure to streamline these tasks into a sequence of atomic visualization manipulations. To illustrate the effectiveness of our approach, we provide real-world examples and experimental results. Telepresence robots can be used to support users to navigate an environment remotely and share the visiting experience with their social partners. Although such systems allow users to see and hear the remote environment and communicate with their partners via live video feed, this does not provide enough awareness of the environment and their remote partner's activities. In this paper, we introduce an awareness framework for collaborative locomotion in scenarios of onsite and remote users visiting a place together. From an observational study of small groups of people visiting exhibitions, we derived four design goals for enhancing the environmental and social awareness between social partners, and developed a set of awareness-enhancing techniques to add to a standard telepresence robot - named TeleAware robot. Through a controlled experiment simulating a guided exhibition visiting task, TeleAware robot showed the ability to lower the workload, facilitate closer social proximity, and improve mutual awareness and social presence compared with the standard one. We discuss the impact of mobility and roles of local and remote users, and provide insights for the future design of awareness-enhancing telepresence robot systems that facilitate collaborative locomotion., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures

With the widespread popularity of internet celebrity marketing all over the world, short video production has gradually become a popular way of presenting products information. However, the traditional video production industry usually includes series of procedures as script writing, video filming in a professional studio, video clipping, special effects rendering, customized post-processing, and so forth. Not to mention that multilingual videos is not accessible for those who could not speak multilingual languages. These complicated procedures usually needs a professional team to complete, and this made short video production costly in both time and money. This paper presents an intelligent system that supports the automatic generation of talking avatar videos, namely Virbo. With simply a user-specified script, Virbo could use a deep generative model to generate a target talking videos. Meanwhile, the system also supports multimodal inputs to customize the video with specified face, specified voice and special effects. This system also integrated a multilingual customization module that supports generate multilingual talking avatar videos in a batch with hundreds of delicate templates and creative special effects. Through a series of user studies and demo tests, we found that Virbo can generate talking avatar videos that maintained a high quality of videos as those from a professional team while reducing the entire production costs significantly. This intelligent system will effectively promote the video production industry and facilitate the internet marketing neglecting of language barriers and cost challenges.

Generative text-to-image models, which allow users to create appealing images through a text prompt, have seen a dramatic increase in popularity in recent years. However, most users have a limited understanding of how such models work and it often requires many trials and errors to achieve satisfactory results. The prompt history contains a wealth of information that could provide users with insights into what have been explored and how the prompt changes impact the output image, yet little research attention has been paid to the visual analysis of such process to support users. We propose the Image Variant Graph, a novel visual representation designed to support comparing prompt-image pairs and exploring the editing history. The Image Variant Graph models prompt differences as edges between corresponding images and presents the distances between images through projection. Based on the graph, we developed the PrompTHis system through co-design with artists. Besides Image Variant Graph, PrompTHis also incorporates a detailed prompt-image history and a navigation mini-map. Based on the review and analysis of the prompting history, users can better understand the impact of prompt changes and have a more effective control of image generation. A quantitative user study with eleven amateur participants and qualitative interviews with five professionals and one amateur user were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of PrompTHis. The results demonstrate PrompTHis can help users review the prompt history, make sense of the model, and plan their creative process.

Federated learning (FL) empowers privacypreservation in model training by only exposing users' model gradients. Yet, FL users are susceptible to gradient inversion attacks (GIAs) which can reconstruct ground-truth training data such as images based on model gradients. However, reconstructing high-resolution images by existing GIAs faces two challenges: inferior accuracy and slow-convergence, especially when duplicating labels exist in the training batch. To address these challenges, we present an Accurate and Fast-convergent Gradient Inversion attack algorithm, called AFGI, with two components: Label Recovery Block (LRB) which can accurately restore duplicating labels of private images based on exposed gradients; VME Regularization Term, which includes the total variance of reconstructed images, the discrepancy between three-channel means and edges, between values from exposed gradients and reconstructed images, respectively. The AFGI can be regarded as a white-box attack strategy to reconstruct images by leveraging labels recovered by LRB. In particular, AFGI is efficient that accurately reconstruct ground-truth images when users' training batch size is up to 48. Our experimental results manifest that AFGI can diminish 85% time costs while achieving superb inversion quality in the ImageNet dataset. At last, our study unveils the shortcomings of FL in privacy-preservation, prompting the development of more advanced countermeasure strategies.

As a new distributed computing framework that can protect data privacy, federated learning (FL) has attracted more and more attention in recent years. It receives gradients from users to train the global model and releases the trained global model to working users. Nonetheless, the gradient inversion (GI) attack reflects the risk of privacy leakage in federated learning. Attackers only need to use gradients through hundreds of thousands of simple iterations to obtain relatively accurate private data stored on users' local devices. For this, some works propose simple but effective strategies to obtain user data under a single-label dataset. However, these strategies induce a satisfactory visual effect of the inversion image at the expense of higher time costs. Due to the semantic limitation of a single label, the image obtained by gradient inversion may have semantic errors. We present a novel gradient inversion strategy based on canny edge detection (MGIC) in both the multi-label and single-label datasets. To reduce semantic errors caused by a single label, we add new convolution layers' blocks in the trained model to obtain the image's multi-label. Through multi-label representation, serious semantic errors in inversion images are reduced. Then, we analyze the impact of parameters on the difficulty of input image reconstruction and discuss how image multi-subjects affect the inversion performance. Our proposed strategy has better visual inversion image results than the most widely used ones, saving more than 78% of time costs in the ImageNet dataset.

Voice dictation is increasingly used for text entry, especially in mobile scenarios. However, the speech-based experience gets disrupted when users must go back to a screen and keyboard to review and edit the text. While existing dictation systems focus on improving transcription and error correction, little is known about how to support speech input for the entire text creation process, including composition, reviewing and editing. We conducted an experiment in which ten pairs of participants took on the roles of authors and typists to work on a text authoring task. By analysing the natural language patterns of both authors and typists, we identified new challenges and opportunities for the design of future dictation interfaces, including the ambiguity of human dictation, the differences between audio-only and with screen, and various passive and active assistance that can potentially be provided by future systems.

Realizing room-temperature magnetic skyrmions in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets offers unparalleled prospects for future spintronic applications. However, due to the intrinsic spin fluctuations that suppress atomic long-range magnetic order and the inherent inversion crystal symmetry that excludes the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, achieving room-temperature skyrmions in 2D magnets remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we target room-temperature 2D magnet $\rm Fe_3GaTe_2$ and unveil that the introduction of iron-deficient into this compound enables spatial inversion symmetry breaking, thus inducing a significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction that brings about room-temperature N\'eel-type skyrmions with unprecedentedly small size. To further enhance the practical applications of this finding, we employ a homemade in-situ optical Lorentz transmission electron microscopy to demonstrate ultrafast writing of skyrmions in $\rm Fe_{3-x}GaTe_2$ using a single femtosecond laser pulse. Our results manifest the $\rm Fe_{3-x}GaTe_2$ as a promising building block for realizing skyrmion-based magneto-optical functionalities.

Ferroelectric materials with switchable electric polarization hold great promise for a plethora of emergent applications, such as post-Moore's law nanoelectronics, beyond-Boltzmann transistors, non-volatile memories, and above-bandgap photovoltaic devices. Recent advances have uncovered an exotic sliding ferroelectric mechanism, which endows to design atomically thin ferroelectrics from non-ferroelectric parent monolayers. Although notable progress has been witnessed in understanding its fundamental properties, functional devices based on sliding ferroelectrics, the key touchstone toward applications, remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate the rewritable, non-volatile memory devices at room-temperature utilizing a two-dimensional (2D) sliding ferroelectric semiconductor of rhombohedral-stacked bilayer molybdenum disulfide. The 2D sliding ferroelectric memories (SFeMs) show superior performances with a large memory window of >8V, a high conductance ratio of above 106, a long retention time of >10 years, and a programming endurance greater than 104 cycles. Remarkably, flexible SFeMs are achieved with state-of-the-art performances competitive to their rigid counterparts and maintain their performances post bending over 103 cycles. Furthermore, synapse-specific Hebbian forms of plasticity and image recognition with a high accuracy of 97.81% are demonstrated based on flexible SFeMs. Our work demonstrates the sliding ferroelectric memories and synaptic plasticity on both rigid and flexible substrates, highlighting the great potential of sliding ferroelectrics for emerging technological applications in brain-inspired in-memory computing, edge intelligence and energy-efficient wearable electronics., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Dictation enables efficient text input on mobile devices. However, writing with speech can produce disfluent, wordy, and incoherent text and thus requires heavy post-processing. This paper presents Rambler, an LLM-powered graphical user interface that supports gist-level manipulation of dictated text with two main sets of functions: gist extraction and macro revision. Gist extraction generates keywords and summaries as anchors to support the review and interaction with spoken text. LLM-assisted macro revisions allow users to respeak, split, merge and transform dictated text without specifying precise editing locations. Together they pave the way for interactive dictation and revision that help close gaps between spontaneous spoken words and well-structured writing. In a comparative study with 12 participants performing verbal composition tasks, Rambler outperformed the baseline of a speech-to-text editor + ChatGPT, as it better facilitates iterative revisions with enhanced user control over the content while supporting surprisingly diverse user strategies., Comment: To appear at ACM CHI 2024

Recently, permissioned blockchain has been extensively explored in various fields, such as asset management, supply chain, healthcare, and many others. Many scholars are dedicated to improving its verifiability, scalability, and performance based on sharding techniques, including grouping nodes and handling cross-shard transactions. However, they ignore the node vulnerability problem, i.e., there is no guarantee that nodes will not be maliciously controlled throughout their life cycle. Facing this challenge, we propose RecAGT, a novel identification scheme aimed at reducing communication overhead and identifying potential malicious nodes. First, shard testable codes are designed to encode the original data in case of a leak of confidential data. Second, a new identity proof protocol is presented as evidence against malicious behavior. Finally, adaptive group testing is chosen to identify malicious nodes. Notably, our work focuses on the internal operation within the committee and can thus be applied to any sharding permissioned blockchains. Existing text selection techniques on touchscreen focus on improving the control for moving the carets. Coarse-grained text selection on word and phrase levels has not received much support beyond word-snapping and entity recognition. We introduce 1D-Touch, a novel text selection method that complements the carets-based sub-word selection by facilitating the selection of semantic units of words and above. This method employs a simple vertical slide gesture to expand and contract a selection area from a word. The expansion can be by words or by semantic chunks ranging from sub-phrases to sentences. This technique shifts the concept of text selection, from defining a range by locating the first and last words, towards a dynamic process of expanding and contracting a textual semantic entity. To understand the effects of our approach, we prototyped and tested two variants: WordTouch, which offers a straightforward word-by-word expansion, and ChunkTouch, which leverages NLP to chunk text into syntactic units, allowing the selection to grow by semantically meaningful units in response to the sliding gesture. Our evaluation, focused on the coarse-grained selection tasks handled by 1D-Touch, shows a 20% improvement over the default word-snapping selection method on Android.

Understanding why a neural network model makes certain decisions can be as important as the inference performance. Various methods have been proposed to help practitioners explain the prediction of a neural network model, of which Shapley values are most popular. SHAP package is a leading implementation of Shapley values to explain neural networks implemented in TensorFlow or PyTorch but lacks cross-platform support, one-shot deployment and is highly inefficient. To address these problems, we present the ONNXExplainer, which is a generic framework to explain neural networks using Shapley values in the ONNX ecosystem. In ONNXExplainer, we develop its own automatic differentiation and optimization approach, which not only enables One-Shot Deployment of neural networks inference and explanations, but also significantly improves the efficiency to compute explanation with less memory consumption. For fair comparison purposes, we also implement the same optimization in TensorFlow and PyTorch and measure its performance against the current state of the art open-source counterpart, SHAP. Extensive benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed optimization approach improves the explanation latency of VGG19, ResNet50, DenseNet201, and EfficientNetB0 by as much as 500%., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

With the increasing adoption of digitization, more and more historical visualizations created hundreds of years ago are accessible in digital libraries online. It provides a unique opportunity for visualization and history research. Meanwhile, there is no large-scale digital collection dedicated to historical visualizations. The visualizations are scattered in various collections, which hinders retrieval. In this study, we curate the first large-scale dataset dedicated to historical visualizations. Our dataset comprises 13K historical visualization images with corresponding processed metadata from seven digital libraries. In curating the dataset, we propose a workflow to scrape and process heterogeneous metadata. We develop a semi-automatic labeling approach to distinguish visualizations from other artifacts. Our dataset can be accessed with OldVisOnline, a system we have built to browse and label historical visualizations. We discuss our vision of usage scenarios and research opportunities with our dataset, such as textual criticism for historical visualizations. Prompts have been shown to be an effective method to adapt a frozen Pretrained Language Model (PLM) to perform well on downstream tasks. Prompts can be represented by a human-engineered word sequence or by a learned continuous embedding. In this work, we investigate conditional and compositional differentiable prompting. We propose a new model, Prompt Production System (PRopS), which learns to transform task instructions or input metadata, into continuous prompts that elicit task-specific outputs from the PLM. Our model uses a modular network structure based on our neural formulation of Production Systems, which allows the model to learn discrete rules -- neural functions that learn to specialize in transforming particular prompt input patterns, making it suitable for compositional transfer learning and few-shot learning. We present extensive empirical and theoretical analysis and show that PRopS consistently surpasses other PLM adaptation techniques, and often improves upon fully fine-tuned models, on compositional generalization tasks, controllable summarization and multilingual translation, while needing fewer trainable parameters., Comment: Accepted at International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) 2023

Optical phase-matching involves establishing a proper phase relationship between the fundamental and generated waves to enable efficient optical parametric processes. It is typically achieved through either birefringence or periodically assigned polarization. Here, we report that twist angle in two-dimensional (2D) materials can generate a nonlinear Berry optical phase to compensate the phase mismatch in the process of nonlinear optical frequency conversion, and the vertical assembly of 2D layers with a proper twist sequence will generate a nontrivial "twist-phase-matching" (twist-PM) regime. The twist-PM model offers superior flexibility in the design of optical crystals, which works for twisted layers with either periodic or random thickness distribution. The designed crystals from twisted rhombohedra boron nitride films give rise to a second-harmonic generation conversion efficiency of ~8% within a thickness of only 3.2 um, and a facile polarization controllability that is absent in conventional crystals (from linear to left-/right-handed circular/elliptical polarizations). Our methodology establishes a platform for the rational designing and atomic manufacturing of nonlinear optical crystals based on abundant 2D materials for various functionalities.

Wizard of Oz (WoZ) as a prototyping method has been used to simulate intelligent user interfaces, particularly for speech-based systems. However, as our societies' expectations on artificial intelligence (AI) grows, the question remains whether a single Wizard is sufficient for it to simulate smarter systems and more complex interactions. Optimistic visions of 'what artificial intelligence (AI) can do' places demands on WoZ platforms to simulate smarter systems and more complex interactions. This raises the question of whether the typical approach of employing a single Wizard is sufficient. Moreover, while existing work has employed multiple Wizards in WoZ studies, a multi-Wizard approach has not been systematically studied in terms of feasibility, effectiveness, and challenges. We offer Wizundry, a real-time, web-based WoZ platform that allows multiple Wizards to collaboratively operate a speech-to-text based system remotely. We outline the design and technical specifications of our open-source platform, which we iterated over two design phases. We report on two studies in which participant-Wizards were tasked with negotiating how to cooperatively simulate an interface that can handle natural speech for dictation and text editing as well as other intelligent text processing tasks. We offer qualitative findings on the Multi-Wizard experience for Dyads and Triads of Wizards. We propose a spatial-constraint approach for modeling spatial-based interactions and enabling interactive visualizations, which involves the manipulation of visualizations through selection, filtering, navigation, arrangement, and aggregation. We proposes a system that activates static visualizations by adding intelligent interactions, which is achieved by associating static visual objects with forces. Our force-directed technique facilitates smooth animated transitions of the visualizations between different interaction states. We showcase the effectiveness of our technique through usage scenarios that involve activating visualizations in real-world settings.

Users readily embrace the rapid advancements in virtual reality (VR) technology within various everyday contexts, such as gaming, social interactions, shopping, and commerce. In order to facilitate transactions and payments, VR systems require access to sensitive user data and assets, which consequently necessitates user authentication. However, there exists a limited understanding regarding how users' unique experiences in VR contribute to their perception of security. In our study, we adopt a research approach known as ``technology probe'' to investigate this question. Specifically, we have designed probes that explore the authentication process in VR, aiming to elicit responses from participants from multiple perspectives. These probes were seamlessly integrated into the routine payment system of a VR game, thereby establishing an organic study environment. Through qualitative analysis, we uncover the interplay between participants' interaction experiences and their security perception. Remarkably, despite encountering unique challenges in usability during VR interactions, our participants found the intuitive virtualized authentication process beneficial and thoroughly enjoyed the immersive nature of VR. Furthermore, we observe how these interaction experiences influence participants' ability to transfer their pre-existing understanding of authentication into VR, resulting in a discrepancy in perceived security. Moreover, we identify users' conflicting expectations, encompassing their desire for an enjoyable VR experience alongside the assurance of secure VR authentication. Building upon our findings, we propose recommendations aimed at addressing these expectations and alleviating potential conflicts.
