4. Lowering Ternary Oxide Synthesis Temperatures by Solid-State Cometathesis Reactions

Low-temperature synthesis routes are necessary for selectively synthesizing many metastable solid-state materials. Here, we identify a cooperative effect that starting materials have in lowering temperatures in solid-state metathesis reactions by studying the formation of yttrium manganese oxide. Previous studies have shown that YMnO3 can be synthesized by ternary metathesis with an alkali halide being produced as a secondary product. In this contribution, we show that by using alkaline earth metals instead of alkali metals, the polymorph selectivity of the reaction is changed, as orthorhombic YMnO3 forms at lower temperatures than the hexagonal polymorph. Reactions were studied using ex post facto synchrotron X-ray diffraction. These experiments reveal that reactions using alkaline earth manganese oxides as a starting material require high temperatures to progress. Reaction temperatures can be lowered from 700 to 550 °C while maintaining phase selectivity by reacting both MgMn2O4 and CaMn2O4 with YOCl in a cooperative "cometathesis"reaction. The nascent halide salts appear to improve the reaction kinetics. Since the onset temperature for YMnO3 formation falls 50 °C below the MgCl2-CaCl2 liquidus, the enhanced reactivity is consistent with the surface melting of a nasscent salt byproduct at the interfaces. Cometathesis routes have similar phase selectivity and temperature reduction in reactions that form TbMnO3, ErMnO3, and DyMnO3. Cometathesis lowers reaction temperatures while preserving the reaction selectivity of the end members, making it a valuable approach for synthesizing metastable targets.

The Tatun geothermal system, located in northern Taiwan, is hosted by the Plio-Pleistocene Tatun volcanic group, consisting dominantly of andesitic lavas, domes and pyroclastic flows. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, geologic mapping, geochemical sampling, geophysical surveys, and the drilling of numerous exploration and temperature gradient wells were conducted at Tatun under the leadership of the Mineral Research and Service Organization (MRSO), the predecessor to the geothermal group at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). Deep (1–2 km) wells encountered commercial temperatures (200–300 °C) in the Matsao area, but these initial exploration efforts were discouraged by the presence of very acidic (pH < 3.5) and highly corrosive fluids. Numerous geoscience studies conducted over the past 15 years at Tatun have shown that the central portion of the system is dominated by corrosive volcanic fluids, as evidenced by abundant SO2 as well as HCl. More reduced gases are encountered on the flanks of the system, suggesting that water-rock interaction may have at least partly neutralized the volcanic-derived fluids on the margins of this geothermal system.

10. Block-grained domain adaptation for neural networks at edge.

- Abstract
Running deep neural networks on edge devices faces two challenges: model scaling and domain adaptation. Existing model scaling techniques and unsupervised online domain adaptation techniques suffer from coarse scaling granularity, limited scaling space, and long online domain adaptation time. To address these two challenges, this paper proposes a block-grained model scaling and domain adaptation training method called EdgeScaler, which consists of offline and online phases. For the model scaling challenge, in the offline phase, blocks are detected and extracted from various DNN and then are converted into multiple derived blocks. In the online phase, based on the combination of blocks and the connections between them, a large-scale scaling space is provided to solve the model scaling problem. For the domain adaptation challenge, a block-specific residual Adapter is designed, which is inserted into the blocks in the offline phase. In the online phase, when a new target domain arrives, all adapters are trained to solve the domain adaptation problem for all options in the block-grained scaling space. Test results on the real edge device, Jetson TX2, show that EdgeScaler can reduce the domain adaptation training time by an average of 85.14% and reduce the training energy consumption by an average of 84.1%, while providing a large-scale scaling option. In this study, we report the fabrication and characterization of a novel PEC tandem cell, consisting of p-Si/TiO2/Fe2O3 core/shell/hierarchical nanowire (csh-NW) array photocathode and TiO2/TiO2 core/shell nanotube (cs-NT) array photoanode, for overall solar water splitting in a neutral pH water. The p-Si/n-TiO2/n-Fe2O3 csh-NWs, made mainly by solution-processed methods, offer significantly improved performance in the neutral pH water with a low (positive) onset potential and photoactivity at zero bias, due to the increased reaction surface area, effective energy band alignment among p-Si, n-TiO2 and n-Fe2O3 enhancing the charge separation, improved optical absorption, and enhanced gas evolution. Nitrogen modification (annealing under N2) is used to further enhance the csh-NWs photocathodic performance. The PEC tandem cell is then able to handle overall solar water splitting in the neutral pH water with a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of ~0.18%. The achieved results demonstrate initial steps toward the realization of full PEC devices using earth-abundant materials for solar hydrogen generation suggesting competitive performance when solar matched photoanode core material and co-catalysts are used.

For the first time supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) and cluster jet injection (CJI) were applied to mitigate edge-localized modes (ELMs) in HL-2A successfully. The ELM frequency increased by a factor of 2-3 and the heat flux on the divertor target plates decreased by 50% on average after SMBI or CJI. Energetic particle induced modes were observed in different frequency ranges with high-power electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). The high frequency (200-350 kHz) of the modes with a relatively small amplitude was close to the gap frequency of the toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmode. The coexistent multi-mode magnetic structures in the high-temperature and low-collision plasma could affect the plasma transport dramatically. Long-lived saturated ideal magnetohydrodynamic instabilities during strong neutral beam injection heating could be suppressed by high-power ECRH. The absolute rate of nonlinear energy transfer between turbulence and zonal flows was measured and the secondary mode competition between low-frequency (LF) zonal flows (ZFs) and geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) was identified, which demonstrated that ZFs played an important role in the L-H transition. The spontaneously generated E × B shear flow was identified to be responsible for the generation of a large-scale coherent structure (LSCS), which provided unambiguous experimental evidence for the LSCS generation mechanism. New meso-scale electric potential fluctuations (MSEFs) at frequency f ∼ 10.5 kHz with two components of n = 0 and m/n = 6/2 were also identified in the edge plasmas for the first time. The MSEFs coexisted and interacted with magnetic islands of m/n = 6/2, turbulence and LF ZFs. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

OSA and snoring were assessed with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Snore Outcomes Survey, polysomnography, and snoring sound recording. The carotid arteries were evaluated with ultrasonography and divided into three types of carotid artery profiles (normal carotid artery, thick CIMT, or significant carotid atherosclerosis). Multivariate linear/logistic/categorical regressions were performed with the forward selection approaches/logistic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, as appropriate.Results: Normalized snoring sound energy (301– 850 Hz) was independently associated with the carotid intima-media thickness (regression coefficient [β] = 0.01, standard error [SE] = 0.004, P = 0.03; R2 = 0.067) and type of carotid profile (β = 0.40, SE = 0.09, P < 0.001; R2 = 0.156). Normalized snoring sound energy (4– 300 Hz) (β = − 0.10, SE = 0.04, P = 0.01) and female sex (β = 1.90, SE = 0.94, P = 0.04) were independently related to the presence of carotid stenosis (R2 = 0.159). The optimal regression model of the type of carotid artery profile included normalized snoring sound energy (301– 850 Hz) (β = 0.33, SE = 0.14, P = 0.03), snoring time (β = 0.26, SE = 0.13, P = 0.047), female sex (β = 0.26, SE = 0.13, P = 0.047), and increased age (β = 0.20, SE = 0.10, P = 0.04) under the control of the Snore Outcomes Survey score, 3% oxygen desaturation index, snoring sound energy (4– 1500 Hz), normalized snoring sound energy (851– 1500 Hz), cigarette smoking, and hyperlipidemia (R2 = 0.427).Conclusion: Our findings suggested that snoring sound characteristics are associated with carotid artery profiles among early OSA patients who cannot be noticed by ultrasound because organic changes of the carotid artery have not yet started. Information was obtained through semi-structured in-depth interviews. The interviews were audio-recorded and then translated verbatim, and the data were collected and analyzed concurrently to develop major themes and categories.Result: In total, 14 participants (8 female) were interviewed. In a bio-psycho-social model, the participants used LAIs as a method to become “normal,” in order to achieve a balance between the “effects” and “side effects” that may influence their daily lives. Their past experiences constructed their concepts about and expectations regarding LAIs, and their relationships with their family members and co-workers also modeled their experiences.Conclusion: In our study, we sought to understand the experience of LAI in the daily life context of the patients. - Abstract
In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

East Asian familialist welfare regimes have experienced major elder-care reforms over the last two decades under socio-economic and political pressures. This raises questions regarding the policy continuity and change of the familialist trajectories and its explanations. Adopting too narrow a focus on policy change, and viewing it as an automatic response to functional and political pressures, or as a static trajectory of the existing cultural and institutional legacies, the existing East Asian welfare state literature has found it difficult to understand the dynamics and outcomes of these rapid policy reforms. This thesis addresses these questions by undertaking a case study of Taiwan’s elder-care reform between 2004 and 2016, based on an analysis of documents from governmental and non-governmental sources and in-depth interviews with high-profile government officials, legislators, and representatives of advocacy groups. By developing a comprehensive framework based on the concept of defamilialisation, which covers the major policy domains of elder care, including legal caring obligations, care services and provision, cash benefits, and care leave, this thesis demonstrates that Taiwan’s elder-care reform involves a high degree of policy continuity with the familialist trajectory. This policy continuity results from the interaction between policy ideas and political agency operated differently in two distinct periods of reform. Calling for stronger public responsibility for elder care, policy actors promote diverging reform ideas, which involves different treatments of the defamilialisation of care responsibility and the formalisation of informal care labour. Strategic policy actors are not only able to bring forward new policy ideas through power imbalance among actors (policy ideas of powerful political actors), but, in a different setting, they can also resist policy change through the exercise of the ideational ambiguity of ‘care going public’ (policy ideas empowering political actors). Examining the interplay between ideas and politics in Taiwan’s elder-care reform, this thesis furthers the understanding of East Asian social policy development by moving beyond the conventional functionalist, democratisation, and cultural theses, and also enriches general analyses of the transformation of social care and policy change.

This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the DSSS among patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: Two-hundred and twenty-five patients with CLBP were enrolled. Psychiatric diagnoses were made based on the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV-Text Revision. The DSSS, Oswestry Disability Index, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Short Form 36 (SF-36) were administered. Cronbach’s alpha was used to test internal consistency. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to identify cutoff scores for a major depressive episode (MDE). Results: Subjects with an MDE (N=21) had greater severities of depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, and disability as compared with those without an MDE. The Cronbach’s alpha values of the DS and SS were 0.90 and 0.83, respectively. The DS and SS were significantly correlated with the Oswestry Disability Index, the HADS, and the SF-36 subscales. The DS had the greatest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.96) as compared with the SS and the HADS subscales. The cutoff score for an MDE was a DS score≥15 (sensitivity and specificity: 100% and 88.7%, respectively). Conclusion: The DSSS subscales were of acceptable reliability and validity. The DS can be used as a tool for evaluating the severity of depression and detecting an MDE in patients with CLBP. Keywords: back pain, cutoff point, depression, psychometrics, somatization

The aim of this study was to develop a novel dry electroencephalography (EEG) sensor with a soft, pliable pad that conforms to the contours of the skin and skull, providing a suitable surface contact area for collecting electrical potential signals and ensuring a reliable connection. In this study, based on our experience in developing flexible silver/silicon-based dry-contact sensors (SBDSs) for biosignal measurements, we proposed a new, augmented wire-embedded silicon-based dry-contact sensor (WSBDS) with a long lifespan and better performance in EEG measurements. The following two augmentation concepts were proposed in this design and implemented in fabrication: 1) the addition of a metal stud and 2) the embedding of copper wires into the fingers of an acicular SBDS. The forehead sensor is suitable for forehead EEG measurements, and the acicular sensor is designed for application to hair-covered sites, where it can overcome hair interference to achieve satisfactory scalp contact while maintaining low impedance at the skin-electrode interface. Finally, this augmented WSBDS performed well in human EEG recording in a designed brain-computer interface (BCI) experiment and is feasible for practical applications.

Acupuncture has gained popularity and has been accepted gradually by many countries because it can successfully treat patients with chronic pain, but the specific brain mechanisms under acupuncture treatment for CSP remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to 1) compare the clinical effects between acupuncture at the contralateral and ipsilateral Tiaokou (ST 38) point in patients with unilateral shoulder pain and 2) explore how contralateral- and ipsilateral-acupuncture modulates the regional homogeneity (ReHo) of patients with CSP.Patients and methods: This was a pilot functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) trial. Twenty-four patients with CSP were recruited and randomized to the contralateral acupuncture group (contra-group) and the ipsilateral acupuncture group (ipsi-group). All patients completed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans before and after acupuncture treatment. Shoulder pain intensity (visual analog scale [VAS]) and shoulder joint function (Constant–Murley score [CMS]) were used to evaluate clinical efficiency of treatment. ReHo was used to assess resting-state brain activity.Results: We found clinical improvement in decreasing pain intensity and increasing shoulder function in both groups, and the mean objective shoulder functional improvement in contra-group was better than that in ipsi-group (p = 0.010). Interestingly, the brain mechanism of contra-acupuncture at ST 38 was distinguishable from ipsi-acupuncture regarding ReHo values.Conclusion: Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) may play a direct role in the regulation of brain by the contralateral acupuncture at ST 38 in patients with shoulder pain. On the contrary, the pathway of brainstem-thalamus-cortex may be likely to work in mechanism of acupuncture at ipsilateral ST 38.Significance: Our results indicate that the clinical effects and brain mechanisms are different between the stimulation given at contralateral and ipsilateral acupoints in patients with CSP and imply that the selection of either contralateral or ipsilateral acupuncture therapy to treat some chronic pain conditions is necessary. The questionnaire included general demographic data and preferences for the use of LAIs in different situations.Results: A total of 142 psychiatrists were included in our study. Among them, 114 were male (80.3%), and most practiced in general hospitals (n=110, 77.5%). We found that general hospital psychiatrists were more likely to prescribe LAIs for patients in the acute stage and with positive symptoms than were psychiatric hospital psychiatrists. General hospital psychiatrists also tended to prescribe LAIs at every time point of the disease.Conclusion: General hospital psychiatrists were more likely to prescribe LAIs than those in psychiatric hospitals. Knowing the factors affecting psychiatrists’ preferences may help us to develop a further study to explore “why” psychiatrists consider or do not consider LAIs in different facilities. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd On-road remote sensing technology measures the concentration ratios of pollutants over CO2 in the exhaust plume in half a second when a vehicle passes by a measurement site, providing a rapid, non-intrusive and economic tool for vehicle emissions monitoring and control. A key assumption in such measurement is that the emission ratios are constant for a given plume. However, there is a lack of study on this assumption, whose validity could be affected by a number of factors, especially the engine operating conditions and turbulence. To guide the development of the next-generation remote sensing system, this study is conducted to investigate the effects of various factors on the emissions dispersion process in the vehicle near-wake region and their effects on remote sensing measurement. The emissions dispersion process is modelled using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The studied factors include the height of the remote sensing beam, vehicle speed, acceleration and side wind. The results show that the measurable CO2 and NO exhaust plumes are relatively short at 30 km/h cruising speed, indicating that a large percentage of remote sensing readings within the measurement duration (0.5 s) are below the sensor detection limit which would distort the derived emission ratio. In addition, the valid measurement region of NO/CO2 emission ratio is even shorter than the measurable plume and is at the tailpipe height. The effect of vehicle speed (30–90 km/h) on the measurable plume length is insignificant. Under deceleration condition, the length of the valid NO/CO2 measurement region is shorter than under cruising and acceleration conditions. Side winds from the far-tailpipe direction have a significant effect on remote sensing measurements. The implications of these findings are discussed and possible solutions to improve the accuracy of remote sensing measurement are proposed.

In this paper, we consider mixed finite element approximations of a class of nonlinear parabolic equations. The backward Euler scheme for temporal discretization is used. Firstly, the new mixed projection is defined and the related a priori error estimates are proved. Secondly, the optimal a priori error estimates for the pressure variable and the velocity variable are derived. Finally, a numerical example is presented to verify the theoretical results.
