This article examines the self-presentation goals that underlie attraction to organizations. Expanding on Lievens and Highhouse's (2003) instrumental vs. symbolic classification of corporate attributes, a theory of symbolic attraction is presented that posits social-identity consciousness as a moderator of the relation between symbolic inferences about organizations (e.g., this company is dynamic and innovative) and attraction to those organizations. A measure of social-identity consciousness is developed, and a series of studies confirmed two dimensions, labeled concern for "social adjustment" and concern for "value expression." Preliminary evidence supports the validity of the measure and its role in moderating attraction to symbolic features of well-known firms. (Contains 2 figures and 5 tables.)

REEVE (4) Abstract: In this study we sought to better understand response intentions and response behavior to an online special topics university satisfaction survey to not only advance theory but to better inform practice on the meaning and implications of nonresponse to their efforts. Using the Rogelberg, Luong, Sederburg, and Cristol (2000) response behavior model, data collected in this 2-wave field study (394 students, 50% men) supported most of the framework's major assertions, supported our proposed extensions, and resulted in a few unexpected findings. Overall, to understand response behavior to an online special topics organizational survey, one must take into consideration factors related to technology, attitudes toward surveys in general, satisfaction with the specific topic in question, and response intentions. The globally distributed avian family Motacillidae consists of five to seven genera (Anthus, Dendronanthus, Tmetothylacus, Macronyx and Motacilla, and depending on the taxonomy followed, Amaurocichla and Madanga) and 66–68 recognized species, of which 32 species in four genera occur in sub‐Saharan Africa. The taxonomy of the Motacillidae has been contentious, with variable numbers of genera, species and subspecies proposed and some studies suggesting greater taxonomic diversity than currently recognized (five genera and 67 species). Using one nuclear (Mb) and two mitochondrial (cyt b and CO1) gene regions amplified from DNA extracted from contemporary and museum specimens, we investigated the taxonomic status of 56 of the currently recognized motacillid species and present the most taxonomically complete and expanded phylogeny of this family to date. Our results suggest that the family comprises six clades broadly reflecting continental distributions: sub‐Saharan Africa (two clades), the New World (one clade), Palaearctic (one clade), a widespread large‐bodied Anthus clade, and a sixth widespread genus, Motacilla. Within the Afrotropical region, our phylogeny further supports recognition of Wood Pipit Anthus nyassae as a valid species, and the treatment of Long‐tailed Pipit Anthus longicaudatus and Kimberley Pipit Anthus pseudosimilis as junior subjective synonyms of Buffy Pipit Anthus vaalensis and African Pipit Anthus cinnamomeus, respectively. As the disjunct populations of Long‐billed Pipit Anthus similis in southern and East Africa are genetically distinct and geographically separated, we propose a specific status for the southern African population under the earliest available name, Nicholson's Pipit Anthus nicholsoni. Further, as our analyses indicate that Yellow‐breasted Pipit Anthus chloris and Golden Pipit Tmetothylacus tenellus are both nested within the Macronyx longclaws, we propose transferring these species to the latter genus. The Yellow-breasted Pipit (Anthus chloris) is endemic to the eastern escarpment of South Africa, marginally entering eastern Lesotho. This species is classified as globally Vulnerable due to a perceived decreasing population size and loss of habitat. We employed Species Distribution Modelling to investigate the predicted range of this species to determine whether additional purportedly suitable habitat exists where this species may be found, and to assess the degree to which habitat loss has affected this species. We used a database of 250 independently obtained and verified sightings to predict the summer breeding distribution of this species and compare our verified sightings and predicted range to the sightings currently in the Second Southern African Bird Atlas Project (SABAP2) database and the latest regional conservation assessment. Our models closely approximate the current distribution of the Yellow-breasted Pipit, and suggest that most of the purportedly suitable habitat is occupied, at least at the macro scale. Our models further suggest that the Eastern Cape Province does not hold much suitable habitat for this species, and that the purported range contraction in this region may have been overestimated.
