9. Settler colonial theory and Canadian cultural nationalism.

Abstract

This article examines Canadian cultural nationalism since Confederation through the lens of settler colonial theory, engaging with questions arising from this exercise. Along the way it discusses how settler colonial theory meshes with other theoretical perspectives, particularly nationalism theory. The main body of the paper is a historical overview of how settler cultural production colonized Indigenous peoples symbolically from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Appropriation from and stereotyping of Indigenous peoples are analyzed. While these forms of indirect erasure were common, a direct erasure that simply ignored the Indigenous fact was far more prevalent. Nationalist cultural producers focused instead on Eurocivility, settler colonizations of other settlers, and Canada's dual imperia. Moreover, settler colonialism was not the only form of colonialism influencing cultural nationalism: extractive colonialism affected it as well. Settler cultural discourse changed dramatically in the late twentieth century. Radical shifts in the realpolitik of settler-Indigenous relations and settler morality delegitimized erasure practices. Some cultural producers responded by integrating Indigenous peoples into new formulations of national identity, while others popularized representations of settler guilt. The article concludes with observations on the historicity of these new perspectives and how Canada's legacy of cultural nationalism might constructively inform decolonization. In 1968, Canadians dared to take a chance on a new kind of politician. Pierre Trudeau became the leader of the Liberal Party in April and two months later won the federal election. His meteoric rise to power was driven by Trudeaumania, an explosive mix of passion and fear fueled by media hype and nationalist ambition. This book traces what happened when the fabled spirit of the sixties met the excitement of the Centennial and Expo 67. Canadians wanted to modernize their nation, differentiate it from the US, and defuse Quebec separatism. "The History of the Book in Canada is one of this country's great scholarly achievements, with three volumes spanning topics from Aboriginal communication systems established prior to European contact to the arrival of multinational publishing companies. Each volume observes developments in the realms of writing, publishing, dissemination, and reading, illustrating the process of a fledgling nation coming into its own. The third and final volume follows book history and print culture from the end of the First World War to 1980, discussing the influences on them of the twentieth century, including the country's growing demographic complexity and the rise of multiculturalism." -- Front flap of jacket.
