COURAGE , *CIVILIZATION , *KNIGHTS & knighthood - Abstract
Summary: Since the beginning of our civilization, the man on horseback rises from the ground, improving his warrior skills thanks to the strength and courage of the animal he rides. However, it will be in the 11th century when chivalry becomes an ethos (model of conduct), in which the warrior condition, which linked him to the exercise of war, merges with the aristocratic and christian condition in the knight. This transformation will trigger a series of social, military and literary changes, which will be the origin of the formation of the image of the medieval knight, fixed on the characters that animate different stories; like the Book of Knight Zifar. These stories, which in their day encouraged the feats they narrated and the type of conduct they enacted to take place in reality, are now valuable testimony to a model of moral improvement and the search for spiritual conquest.

After the Almoravid conquest, Al-Andalus experienced a profound change in its social, economic, and governmental structure. Based on the ideas and theories proposed by the Law and Literature Movement, this article analyzes the regulations related to women in Ibn 'Abdūn's treatise. The work, written towards the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century, is part of the genre of Arabic literature called ḥisba, and the objective of these texts was to regulate commercial transactions, while serving to reinforce the sharia law in public spaces and private. Destined to be a list of regulations of the different guilds and of the urban institutions of Seville, Ibn'Abdūn's little work ends, in various instances, regulating the behavior of the civilian population, and especially the behavior of women, whose lives suffered a radical change by the imposition of a new ideology, in the public spaces of the city. The treaty thus represents an open window at a crucial moment in the history of Al-Andalus and a valuable instrument for the study and understanding of the situation of women in Seville at the beginning of the 12th century.

- Abstract
Tirant lo Blanch by Joanot Martorell (†1465) describes in chapter 55 a stage set up to celebrate the wedding of the kings of England. This stage is decorated with several human or animal shaped statues that make liquids flow. From the aforementioned passage of Tirant lo Blanch, but through a French translation entitled Tiran le Blanc and attributed to the Count of Caylus (†1765), some critical studies on fountain design and iconography have adduced the case of two female nude statues that make liquid flow, the first one from the nipples and the second one from the genital organ. This tradition of studies, represented by scholars such as Waldemar Deonna (†1959), has referred to Tiran le Blanc almost as if it were an anonymous French work, not mentioning that it derives from the great novel written in Catalan by Martorell. In one of the best-known papers on anthropomorphic fountains, Deonna perpetrated two mistakes that have subsequently been transmitted from one study to another: the novel is now called Tristan le Blanc, and its dating goes back to the fourteenth century. This current paper contextualizes and unravels these critical mistakes, and for the first time it jointly examines critical contributions on Tirant lo Blanch and studies on anthropomorphic fountains.

literatura medieval ,Tirant lo Blanch ,Castell d’Amor ,teatralitat ,iconografia ,amor cortès ,Language and Literature ,French literature - Italian literature - Spanish literature - Portuguese literature ,PQ1-3999 - Abstract

The poetic universe of João Airas de Santiago does not end with the 81 compositions that have reached us. Following a singing of love that presents moral sirvent's characteristics, we will see how Santiago's bourgeois reflects on several aspects of human behaviour, inspired by his readings of the book of Ecclesiastes. The analysis of this remarkable intertextuality intends to show how the presence of biblical thought in the troubadour's texts seems to provide the legitimisation of the troubadour's activity, made possible by love.

The scholarship on medieval literary multilingualism is mostly focused on a utilitarian notion of language choice which only depends on genre or the type of audience. Languages in this context have little political value and do not necessarily identify a writer with a specific political community. In Al-Andalus, however, the coexistence of Muslims, Jews and Christians suffused the question of language choice with a strong sense of belonging. Loyalty to the sacred language of each religion was transposed to a series of deeply exilic theoretical discourses and literary practices which were very different from the utilitarian outlook of the rest of Europe: an elegiac lament for the loss of Latin, a deep concern about the purity of Arabic far from the great seats of learning in the Middle East, and the efforts of recovering Biblical Hebrew as a poetic language.

A veces existen otras intenciones polémicas o políticas.

SPACE , *MEDIEVAL literature , *SPACE & time in literature , *SPANISH literature , *SEMANTICS , *GRAMMAR - Abstract
Being aware of the wide bibliography devoted to the study of the space in literature, this work pretends, in the first place, to make a review of much of such bibliography in order to show that the term is either ambiguous or scarcely defined. Having done so we came up with the concept of "spatiality" instead of that of "space" since we acknowledge that the construction of space may vary from author to author, from time to time, or from genre to genre and thus require a more comprehensive approach. Within this spatiality we would distinguish between a "grammar" and a "semantics" of the spatiality which would be useful to identify and interpret the spatial elements of the literary work in its context. By doing so we intend here to point at other literary and linguistic elements of the literary work than description which may enforce the study of the medieval texts in a more comprehensive way, especially, medieval ones. From the perspective of an intertextual reading, this article aims to question and reflect about the idea of city in The City of Ladies, by Christine de Pizan, idealized in 1405. The purpose is to discuss the construction of this female city through a critical reading that gives a new meaning to the realities of women exposed by the ideology of the medieval misogyny. To this end, some themes and issues pertinent to views of representatives male figures of this medieval misogynist literary genre will be identified and discussed whose antifeminine pronouncements are present in the book. The article discusses as Christine de Pizan's main contribution her originality in arguing and proposing the construction of a city favorable to the idea of inclusion and dialogue by and for women. It is a city designed to promote, through its example, the emancipation of women from the misogynistic yoke of the traditional male views. In this sense, pioneering and adventitious for its time, the metaphorical construction of Christine de Pizan's City of Ladies resignifies the arcane symbolism of the female weaving of misogynistic shape to propose a possible female consciousness of the historical and cultural conditions of the women in those times of robust vernacular adaptations of the legacy of misogyny in the late literary Middle Ages. Mutatis mutandis, had it not been for the question of epistemological property, Christine de Pizan would have been, at the end of the Middle Ages, a voice of decoloniality of the hegemonic misogynistic discourse, if, as it will be seen, she had not reproduced in her discourse traditional ways and forms of being of the traditional discourse of the coloniality of women. - Abstract
This work aims to study the relationship between some of the Ibero-Romance testimonies with medievaltranslations of the small treatise entitled Meditationes piissimae de cognitione humanae conditionis, traditionally attributed–it seems, improperly– to Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. It is intended to show, through the study of the significant errorspresent in these texts, that the two surviving Portuguese testimonies are independent of each other, but dependent on athird, also Portuguese, now lost or unknown. The Spanish testimonies of the same work are also analyzed and the existingaffinity between part of the testimonies of these two traditions is highlighted. Finally, it seeks to demonstrate that thePortuguese medieval translation does not derive directly from Latin, but from one of the Spanish translations., Este trabajo pretende estudiar la relación de algunos de los testimonios iberorrománicos con las traducciones medievales del pequeño tratado titulado Meditationes piissimae de cognitione humanoe conditionis, tradicionalmente atribuido –al parecer, erróneamente– a San Bernardo de Claraval.

- Abstract
During the late 15th century and the incunabulum period, dedications placed in prologues responded to a well-defined codification based on patronage and sponsorship relationships between the author or translator and the text addressee. The consolidation of the printing press and the introduction of new agents of book production and distribution, specially editors, altered this network of relationships and their motivations, contributing to the modification of this paratextuality of the medieval texts that were reprinted in the 16th century.

- Abstract
The medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight had its film adaptation entitled The Green Knight released in 2021 under the direction of David Lowery with Dev Patel in the role of Gawain. Both the poem and the film feature a significant number of female characters who have some contact with the supernatural and who act as guides and test mediators in Gawain’s journey. This work intends to approach how these female characters were adapted for the feature film, thinking about how the conjunction with magic and the symbolism of the pentangle were used in order to relate such characters as architects of the adventure and consequently as divine representations of pagan legends that were syncretized with the Christian religious universe. The work also focuses on references from medieval literature to adaptations for modern cinema, discussing how, given the difficulty in adapting complex characters such as Morgan le Fay and symbols such as the pentangle, the director used strategic representations so that modern audiences had a better understanding of the adventure of Arthur’s knight. The study is based on analyzes of feminism and Arthurian literature as expressed by Larissa Tracy and Geraldine Heng; of critical texts about Arthurian adaptations such as Maureen Fries, as well as authors specialized in the original poem such as J. A. Burrow and uses the most recent translation into Portuguese of the medieval poem made by Artur Avelar in 2020., O poema medieval Sir Gawain e o Cavaleiro Verde teve sua adaptação cinematográfica intitulada A Lenda do Cavaleiro Verde lançada em 2021 com direção de David Lowery com Dev Patel no papel de Gawain.

Not only Plato and Aristotle are remembered in the communal Firenze. Epicurus also, mentioned by Dante, Boccaccio and Villani. But was there a Florentinian Epicureism? In their imaginary trip from the Commedia, Dante and Virgil -with divine help- manage to enter Ditis City, where the heretical are. In tombs full of fire, should be members of all sects and also the followers of Epicurus (died 270 BC), who was known through Cicero. In fact, the poet brings out notorious Ghibellines. Talks with Farinata degli Uberti and also intervenes with Guido Cavalcanti's father, to whom gives an ambiguous answer, that is in my opinion, a ray of hope for one that is labeled as support the "Epicureans' opinion". Rather, he could be an averroist, which brings together a whole group of intellectuals of the time who deny the immortality of the soul. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
