This study examined US prelicensure nursing program use of clinical judgment models and teaching strategies to promote students' clinical judgment.Growing interest in teaching clinical judgment associated with upcoming changes in NCLEX-RN testing warrants exploration of how models and teaching strategies are currently used.A cross-sectional survey with multiple-choice and open-ended response items was used to examine programs' use of clinical judgment educational models.Of 234 participants (9 percent response rate), 27 percent reported using a model; 51 percent intended and 20 percent did not intend to start using a model. Tanner's clinical judgment model was the most used, followed by the clinical reasoning cycle. Models were used to inform design of teaching/learning strategies and facilitate clinical teaching and evaluation.Clinical judgment model use may increase as programs prepare for changes in NCLEX-RN. Research is needed to understand how model use contributes to measurable differences in clinical judgment skill.

Safe patient care is closely linked to clinical judgment. Concerns about inadequate practice readiness and the impending inclusion of clinical judgment items on the NextGen NCLEX have resulted in increasing interest and publications about teaching clinical judgment. However, little is known about actual current practices for teaching this skill.This research describes findings about current strategies to teach clinical judgment used in US prelicensure nursing programs.Cross-sectional methodology was used to survey program deans and directors across the United States.Programs are using multiple strategies to teach clinical judgment. The most common strategies used include case studies and simulation. Participants believed strategies have a positive impact on student thinking, practice readiness, and program outcomes. They described insights into implementation of teaching for clinical judgment.The results of this research provide foundational data to inform current teaching practices and further research for this essential skill.

The ESAC Initiative is a community of international library practitioners who share data and best practices in order to promote the transition of scholarly publishing to open using transformative agreements. ESAC views transformative agreements as one phase of the transition to open and to a publishing landscape where scholarship will be available to all in a sustainable and equitable manner. The ESAC website shares the outputs of the community's collaborative efforts and provides information on how to participate in the community.

This half-day event included a WMS update and an overview of recent WorldCat Discovery enhancements from OCLC staff, panel discussions on managing open access materials using the WorldCat knowledge base and on compiling library data for ATS annual statistics reporting, and table talks on using WMS modules.

Background: Recent discourse generates a more thorough understanding of what clinical reasoning entails. Although numerous strategies prioritize clinical reasoning development, teaching and evaluating the thinking involved in clinical reasoning remains a struggle for nurse educators, particularly regarding clinical education. Method: In response, the author developed a concept-based clinical reasoning teaching method with weekly themes, lessons, and learning activities adapted from Tanner's clinical judgment model and Lasater's Clinical Judgment Rubric. Results: The method offers an organized, consistent approach to teaching and learning clinical reasoning, with multiple opportunities for student reflection, instructor guidance, and discussing clinical reasoning concepts. Clinical education became transformed for both the nurse educator and nursing students as clinical reasoning became a visible part of students' budding nursing practice. Conclusion: Nurse faculty must ensure future nurses are prepared to think-inaction. The clinical reasoning teaching method offers one potential solution. [ J Nurs Educ . 2018;57(12):727–735.]

The Oriental Region phorid genus Epicnemis Borgmeier is revised, resulting in the recognition of 15 species, 10 of which are new to science: E. alus, chaweewanae, digitalis, disjunctus, dorsalis, latus, projectus, ratanae, setosus, and sinuosus. Only males are treated, as females are highly modified and cannot be associated with their males based on morphology alone.

TrissolcushyalinipennisRajmohana & Narendran is an Old World egg parasitoid ofBagradahilaris(Burmeister). Its potential as a classical biological control agent in the United States has been under evaluation in quarantine facilities since 2014. A survey of resident egg parasitoids using fresh sentinelB.hilariseggs in Riverside, California, revealed thatT.hyalinipennisis present in the wild. Four cards with parasitized eggs were recovered, from which one yielded a single liveT.hyalinipennisand two unidentified dead wasps (Scelionidae), and three yielded twenty liveTrissolcusbasalis(Wollaston) and one dead wasp. Subsequently, samples from Burbank, California, collected with a Malaise trap as part of the BioSCAN project, yielded five females ofT.hyalinipennis. It is presumed that the introduction ofT.hyalinipennisto this area was accidental. Surveys will be continued to evaluate the establishment ofT.hyalinipennisas well as the presence of other resident parasitoid species.

The newly-constructed Nature Gardens at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (California, USA) were purposefully built to attract wildlife. In this study we wanted to find out to what extent this manufactured environment is successful in attracting native insect fauna to the urban core of the city when compared to the surrounding neighborhoods or natural areas on the periphery of Los Angeles. To determine this, a one-year Malaise trap catch from the Nature Gardens was compared with samples from four neighboring sites within a five-kilometer radius, as well as a site adjacent to natural habitat located sixteen kilometers away. Our analysis focused on the diversity and abundance of three pollinator groups: bees, flower flies and butterflies contrasted with a single non-pollinator group: scuttle flies. Our findings show that the Nature Gardens support greater abundance and diversity than any of the nearby sites or the natural site for all pollinator taxa examined. In contrast, the natural site supported much higher abundance and diversity of the non-pollinator scuttle flies when compared to the Nature Gardens. Calculated evenness of all taxa was lower in the Nature Gardens than at the natural site and Shannon Diversity indices were highest in the Nature Gardens for flower flies and butterflies, but lower in the Nature Gardens than at the natural site for bees and scuttle flies. These results indicate that biodiversity in an urban environment can be selectively manipulated through management of green spaces, but may not duplicate the communities found in natural spaces. Rather, targeted management (through plantings, ground cover and other substrates, watering, pest management techniques, etc.) can increase fauna predictively to create a “wildlife spectacle” of charismatic microfauna.

This study focused on how serials information for journal articles is presented based on a sampling of institutional repository platforms at a variety of institutions. Since metadata on journal articles in institutional repositories can often be incomplete and haphazard, not only due to the difficulty of entering the metadata in the first place, but due to the difficulty of adapting existing metadata schemes to represent a journal article accurately, how can libraries increase the discoverability of these individual articles from a wide variety of journals? By examining existing metadata schemes and how they are used to represent articles currently in institutional repositories, libraries can look for a way forward to better represent articles though adapting schemas, exploring possibilities for standardization of metadata for articles, and promoting good practices.

Authentic, practical and realistic experiences for pre-service teachers are essential to any effective teacher education program. If combined with two high-impact educational practices: service learning and study abroad, can result in an inclusive and successful education program. Study abroad with a carefully crafted service-learning component would help pre-service teachers to not only, immerse themselves in a foreign culture, but also to refine their craft in that same context. On a Catholic university campus there exists the unique opportunity to include faith in all coursework and experiences that students may have. The application of Catholic Social Teachings, especially the tenets of social justice, should be a major part of what drives pre-service teachers in the classroom. Coursework that has a social justice bend and experiences that reflect the ideals of social justice according to the Catholic Church can prove to be highly impactful if well-designed.

The purpose of the PNRP patient navigation is to provide individualized assistance to persons with abnormal cancer screening tests or cancer diagnosis by trained, culturally sensitive navigators familiar with the patient's community. The Moffitt Cancer Center is one of nine NCI-funded sites nationally to study the impact that patient navigation has on four main outcomes: 1) time from screening to definitive diagnosis; 2) time from definitive diagnosis to treatment; 3) patient satisfaction; and 4) cost effectiveness. Moffitt's patient navigators navigated over 640 patients referred from seven community clinics in four counties. The majority of the patients were female (93%), Hispanics (54%), with annual household income under $20,000 (80%), mostly unemployed (47.5%), and with an average of 8.8 years of education. Lay patient navigators familiar with the patients’ culture and language were trained to navigate patients with breast or colorectal cancer screening abnormalities. The navigators were asked to record in a log the barriers that they identified, along with the actions they took to assist the patients address such barriers. Navigators addressed 20 different types of barriers in an average of 10 encounters per patient. This presentation will 1) describe the processes of patient navigation utilized by Moffitt PNRP, including training requirements, and caseloads for patient navigators, and 2) discuss the most relevant barriers that navigators found among medically underserved patients to access cancer health services, and actions taken to address such barriers. Moffitt patient navigators engage in a number of actions to help address unique barriers faced by this population when trying to access cancer care services. Nine new species of Neotropical Melaloncha (Udamochiras) bee-killing flies are described: M. altobenia, atribiseta, concavella and sarmientoi from Bolivia, M. ancistra from Colombia, M. corniculata and schiaffinoae from Argentina, M. cucharella from Honduras, and M. stenotes from Costa Rica. The first host information is given for M. (U.) colossia, which attacks introduced honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) in northern Argentina.
