A 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and oers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of 3x1x1 $m^3$ has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. We also present the first results on the achieved charge amplification, prompt scintillation and electroluminescence detection, and purity of the liquid argon from analyses of a collected sample of cosmic ray muons.

- Abstract
We report the results of the analyses of the cosmic ray data collected with a 4 tonne (3×1×1 m3) active mass (volume) Liquid Argon Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) operated in a dual-phase mode. We present a detailed study of the TPC's response, its main detector parameters and performance. The results are important for the understanding and further developments of the dual-phase technology, thanks to the verification of key aspects, such as the extraction of electrons from liquid to gas and their amplification through the entire one square metre readout plain, gain stability, purity and charge sharing between readout views.

- Abstract
A 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and offers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of hree has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. We also present the first results on the achieved charge amplification, prompt scintillation and electroluminescence detection, and purity of the liquid argon from analyses of a collected sample of cosmic ray muons.

Extraction of PsbP and PsbQ proteins by NaCl-washing together with chelator EGTA is followed also by the depletion of Ca2+ cation from OEC. In this study, the effects of PsbP and PsbQ proteins, as well as Ca2+ extraction from OEC on the kinetics of the reduced primary electron acceptor (QA − ) oxidation, have been studied by fluorescence decay kinetics measurements in PSII membrane fragments. We found that in addition to the impairment of OEC, removal of PsbP and PsbQ significantly slows the rate of electron transfer from QA − to the secondary quinone acceptor QB . Electron transfer from QA − to QB in photosystem II membranes with an occupied QB site was slowed down by a factor of 8. However, addition of EGTA or CaCl2 to NaCl-washed PSII did not change the kinetics of fluorescence decay. Moreover, the kinetics of QA − oxidation by QB in Ca-depleted PSII membranes obtained by treatment with citrate buffer at pH 3.0 (such treatment keeps all extrinsic proteins in PSII but extracts Ca2+ from OEC) was not changed. The results obtained indicate that the effect of NaCl-washing on the QA − to QB electron transport is due to PsbP and PsbQ extrinsic proteins extraction, but not due to Ca2+ depletion. The green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, can photoproduce molecular H(2) via ferredoxin and the reversible [Fe]hydrogenase enzyme under anaerobic conditions. Recently, a novel approach for sustained H(2) gas photoproduction was discovered in cell cultures subjected to S-deprived conditions (A. Melis, L. Zhang, M. Forestier, M.L. Ghirardi, M. Seibert [2000] Plant Physiol 122: 127-135). The close relationship between S and Fe in the H(2)-production process is of interest because Fe-S clusters are constituents of both ferredoxin and hydrogenase. In this study, we used Mössbauer spectroscopy to examine both the uptake of Fe by the alga at different CO(2) concentrations during growth and the influence of anaerobiosis on the accumulation of Fe. Algal cells grown in media with (57)Fe(III) at elevated (3%, v/v) CO(2) concentration exhibit elevated levels of Fe and have two comparable pools of the ion: (a) Fe(III) with Mössbauer parameters of quadrupole splitting = 0.65 mm s(-1) and isomeric shift = 0.46 mm s(-1) and (b) Fe(II) with quadrupole splitting = 3.1 mm s(-1) and isomeric shift = 1.36 mm s(-1). Disruption of the cells and use of the specific Fe chelator, bathophenanthroline, have demonstrated that the Fe(II) pool is located inside the cell. The amount of Fe(III) in the cells increases with the age of the algal culture, whereas the amount of Fe(II) remains constant on a chlorophyll basis. Growing the algae under atmospheric CO(2) (limiting) conditions, compared with 3% (v/v) CO(2), resulted in a decrease in the intracellular Fe(II) content by a factor of 3. Incubating C. reinhardtii cells, grown at atmospheric CO(2) for 3 h in the dark under anaerobic conditions, not only induced hydrogenase activity but also increased the Fe(II) content in the cells up to the saturation level observed in cells grown aerobically at high CO(2). This result is novel and suggests a correlation between the amount of Fe(II) cations stored in the cells, the CO(2) concentration, and anaerobiosis. A comparison of Fe-uptake results with a cyanobacterium, yeast, and algae suggests that the intracellular Fe(II) pool in C. reinhardtii may reside in the cell vacuole.

PHYSIOLOGICAL effects of temperature ,COFFEE beans ,OCHRATOXINS ,ASPERGILLUS niger ,MYCOTOXINS - Abstract
The coffee bean is sensitive to contamination with ocratoxigenic fungi; temperature influences the growth, and germination of these fungi, as well as the fungal toxins produced. The objectives of this study were to assess the distribution of toxigenic species, analyze the concentration of ochratoxin A (OTA) in Arabica coffee beans, and aplicate a mathematical model that considers the influence of actual temperature to predict the effects of projected temperature increase on OTA production. This toxin was, however, not detected in any of the coffee bean species analyzed here. The species with the highest incidence were Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus ochraceus. The results of the mathematical model demonstrated the influence of temperature on the production of the toxin. This information indicates the distribution of toxigenic fungal species in the regions of coffee cultivation in Minas Gerais, and thus, will assist the producers in adopting preventive measures. Practical applications: Brazil is the largest coffee producer and exporter, which makes it a leader in the global coffee market; the state of Minas Gerais is responsible for 50% of this production. Following the global trend, Brazil has regulated the maximum permissible limit for ochratoxin A in coffee beans. This has led to a great interest in monitoring fungi and toxin production, mainly during the postharvest stage in the coffee cultivation regions of Brazil. Preventive measures can aid in the safe production of coffee beans, and the use of mathematical models capable of predicting the growth and production of fungal toxins are fundamental to informing the producers of the most favorable conditions in terms of temperature, as well as increases in ambient temperature, in specific regions of interest. The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. In particular, the scintillation light production and propagation processes have been analyzed and compared to simulations, improving the understanding of some liquid argon properties., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of \three has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. - Abstract
Leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania parasites, presents a major global health challenge due to limitations of existing treatments, including toxicity, side effects, drug resistance, and high costs. This study utilized the MuDRA (Multi-Descriptor Read Across) model for virtual screening to identify potential anti-Leishmania infantum compounds. A set of 15 terpenes and steroids was screened, leading to the identification of four promising candidates-lupeol, xylodiol, morolic acid, and trachyloban-18-oic acid. These compounds demonstrated significant activity in both virtual screening and in vitro assays. To elucidate their potential mechanisms of action, we conducted molecular docking and dynamics studies, which revealed stable interactions with key target enzymes, such as trypanothione reductase and 14-alpha demethylase (CYP51), crucial to the parasite's survival and pathogenesis. These findings provide valuable insights into novel mechanisms for targeting leishmaniasis, offering a promising basis for the development of new therapeutics. The integration of computational and experimental methods in this study not only advances our understanding of potential anti-leishmanial agents but also highlights the effectiveness of this approach in discovering new drugs for neglected diseases. Further in vivo studies and clinical trials will be essential to validate the therapeutic potential of these., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

- Abstract
Introduction: Insulinomas are neuroendocrine tumors characterized by an excessive secretion of insulin, and its most common primary site is the pancreas., Presentation of the Case: Female, 31 years old, who underwent surgical resection of a pancreatic insulinoma measuring 0.5 × 0.5 cm during the third trimester of pregnancy. The patient started to present characteristic symptoms (hypoglycemia, adrenergic and neuroglycopenic symptoms) 18 months before being referred to our center. It was decided to resect the lesion due to the intensity of the symptoms and failure of the clinical treatment. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the fetus presented good vitality, as evidenced by the obstetric ultrasound. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the 6th postoperative day. The neonate was born at term, 38 weeks, with appropriate weight for gestational age. Today, around 12 months after surgery, the patient and the infant are in good health conditions and have no complaints., Conclusion: The moment of the surgical intervention in our case reflects the importance of this report, since it reinforces the feasibility of this procedure during pregnancy., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. - Abstract
Objectives: To compare population-based sterilization rates between Latinas/os and non-Latinas/os sterilized under California's eugenics law., Methods: We used data from 17 362 forms recommending institutionalized patients for sterilization between 1920 and 1945. We abstracted patient gender, age, and institution of residence into a data set. We extracted data on institution populations from US Census microdata from 1920, 1930, and 1940 and interpolated between census years. We used Spanish surnames to identify Latinas/os in the absence of data on race/ethnicity. We used Poisson regression with a random effect for each patient's institution of residence to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and compare sterilization rates between Latinas/os and non-Latinas/os, stratifying on gender and adjusting for differences in age and year of sterilization., Results: Latino men were more likely to be sterilized than were non-Latino men (IRR = 1.23; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.15, 1.31), and Latina women experienced an even more disproportionate risk of sterilization relative to non-Latinas (IRR = 1.59; 95% CI = 1.48, 1.70)., Conclusions: Eugenic sterilization laws were disproportionately applied to Latina/o patients, particularly Latina women and girls. Understanding historical injustices in public health can inform contemporary public health practice.

- Abstract
From 1919 to 1952, approximately 20 000 individuals were sterilized in California's state institutions on the basis of eugenic laws that sought to control the reproductive capacity of people labeled unfit and defective. Using data from more than 19 000 sterilization recommendations processed by state institutions over this 33-year period, we provide the most accurate estimate of living sterilization survivors. As of 2016, we estimate that as many as 831 individuals, with an average age of 87.9 years, are alive. We suggest that California emulate North Carolina and Virginia, states that maintained similar sterilization programs and recently have approved monetary compensation for victims. We discuss the societal obligation for redress of this historical injustice and recommend that California seriously consider reparations and full accountability.

- Abstract
Objective: The purpose of our study was to compare the accuracy of clinical ultrasonographic techniques of amniotic fluid volume assessment with a dye-dilution technique., Study Design: We compared amniotic fluid volume as measured by ultrasonographic techniques with a dye-dilution method in 50 women undergoing amniocentesis during the third trimester. Thirteen separate ultrasonographic techniques, including the amniotic fluid index, were evaluated with regression analysis., Results: Amniotic fluid volumes as determined by dye-dilution ranged between 129 and 4444 ml. The amniotic fluid index overestimated the actual volume by as much as 88.7% at lower volumes and underestimated the actual volume by as much as 53.9% at higher volumes., Conclusions: Differences in measurement error between the other ultrasonographic methods and the amniotic fluid index did not appear to be sufficient to warrant changes in current clinical practice. A major source of error in ultrasonographic amniotic fluid volume assessment is that one-dimensional measurements are used to estimate the volume of a complex, three-dimensional object.

- Abstract
Objective: The null hypothesis of this study is that maternal administration of indomethacin or terbutaline will not affect fetal breathing and body movements., Study Design: Thirty patients with a low-risk pregnancy, gestational age 26 to 32 weeks, and no signs of preterm labor were randomly assigned to receive either terbutaline (5 mg), indomethacin (50 mg), or a placebo. Ultrasonographic evaluation of fetal breathing and body movements was performed for 1 hour before and 1 hour after treatment. The total amount of time of fetal breathing and body movements in each group was subject to statistical analysis that included analysis of variance and covariance and a multiple comparison procedure., Results: Indomethacin increased fetal breathing from 20.8 +/- 13.1 minutes to 42.2 +/- 14.8 minutes (p < 0.01), whereas terbutaline increased fetal breathing movements from 19.8 +/- 9.0 minutes to 35.2 +/- 12.4 minutes (p < 0.01). No significant treatment effect was detected on fetal body movements., Conclusion: Between 26 and 32 weeks' gestation, a single dosage of indomethacin or terbutaline increases fetal breathing movements by 103% and 78%, respectively.
