Abstract

Background: The blood pressure-independent renoprotective actions of the blockade of the renin-angiotensin and the sympathetic nervous system are well documented, but monotherapies fail to completely abrogate progression. We investigated whether combined inhibition of the two systems provides additive renoprotection. Methods: After subtotal nephrectomy (SNX) or sham operation, rats underwent resection of dorsal roots, i.e. rhizotomy or sham rhizotomy. Subsequently, they received tap water or quinapril in drinking water for 16 weeks (n = 18/group). Albuminuria, blood pressure and kidneys were assessed (morphometry, immunohistochemistry). Results: At the end of the study telemetric blood pressure in SNX was 118 8 16 mm Hg, in SNX + rhizotomy 110 8 10 mm Hg, in SNX + quinapril 103 8 9 mm Hg and in SNX + quinapril + rhizotomy 95 8 7 mm Hg. Albu- minuria in the respective groups was 169 8 75, 86 8 45, 15 8 23 and 5 8 4 mg/24 h. The glomerulosclerosis index was 1.40 8 0.6, 0.80 8 0.23, 0.37 8 0.16 and 0.31 8 0.15 (p ! 0.001). Only combined intervention caused significant reduction of the glomerular volume and podocyte hypertrophy. The lowest indices for nitrotyrosine, NOS-1 (nNOS), TGF- _ and interstitial collagen were seen with combined interventions (p ! 0.05). Conclusion: In angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor-treated SNX animals, abrogation of sympathetic overactivity provides additional renoprotection and less nitro-oxidative stress of podocytes than single interventions. The added benefits were partially blood pressure independent.

Abstract

A positive association between anemia and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality independent of age, gender, and history of cardiovascular diseases has been confirmed. Disturbed iron metabolism might also play a role in the prognosis of patients with COVID-19. Moreover, alterations of iron homeostasis can persist long after COVID-19 onset and could be associated with impaired physical performance. We aimed to evaluate the levels of parameters associated with iron metabolism in patients hospitalised with COVID-19 during a 1-week period. In our study, 53 patients were included and they were further divided into two groups according to the outcome: positive (recovery and discharge from hospital) or negative (aggravation, exitus, or both). Their blood samples were collected on Days 1, 3, and 7 during hospitalization and basic laboratory analyses were performed, including measurement of iron metabolism parameters. All patients had pathologically increased plasmatic levels of ferritin and decreased levels of transferrin during the whole observation period. We have not found any correlation between levels of these markers and patients' prognosis. However, levels of ferritin significantly decreased and levels of transferrin significantly increased on the seventh day only in patients with a positive outcome. Abstract

The article offers information on liquid-based cytology (LBC), a medical procedure for cervical cell sample preparation. Adopted since 1996, LBC has replaced conventional cytology in the U.S. Pilot studies in England and Scotland showed the role of LBC in curbing the rate of unsatisfactory pap smears. Conversion to LBC in Great Britain happened in October 2008. Trials were also conducted in South African pathology laboratories. The significance of LBC for general practitioners is noted.
