10. An optimization of beta in the DIII-D tokamak

Abstract

Accurate equilibrium reconstruction and detailed stability analysis of a strongly shaped, double-null, βT=11% discharge shows that the plasma core is in the second stable regime to ideal ballooning modes. The equilibrium reconstruction using all the available data (coil currents, poloidal magnetic loops, motional Stark effect data, the kinetic pressure profile, the magnetic axis location, and the location of the two q=1 surfaces) shows a region of negative magnetic shear near the magnetic axis, an outer positive shear region, and a low shear region connecting the two. The inner negative shear region allows a large positive shear region near the boundary, even at low q (q95=2.6), permitting a large outer region pressure gradient to be first regime stable. The inner region is in the second stable regime, consistent with the observed axial beta [βT(0)=44%]. In the low shear region p′ vanishes, consistent with Mercier stability. This is one way to extend the ballooning limit in shaped plasmas while maintaining stability against external kinks. The n=1 analysis shows that the plasma is unstable to an ideal internal mode, consistent with the experimental observations of a saturated internal m/n=l/l mode. The core plasma pressure, not being limited by ballooning stability, appears to be reaching a local equilibrium limit at the magnetic axis. © 1992 American Institute of Physics.

15. Evolution of a Polydisperse Ensemble of Spherical Particles in a Metastable Medium with Allowance for Heat and Mass Exchange with the Environment

Abstract

Motivated by a wide range of applications in various fields of physics and materials science, we consider a generalized approach to the evolution of a polydisperse ensemble of spherical particles in metastable media. An integrodifferential system of governing equations, consisting of a kinetic equation for the particle-size distribution function (Fokker–Planck type equation) and a balance equation for the temperature (concentration) of a metastable medium, is formulated. The kinetic equation takes into account fluctuations in the growth/reduction rates of individual particles, the velocity of particles in a spatial direction, the withdrawal of particles of a given size from the metastable medium, and their source/sink term. The heat (mass) balance equation takes into account the growth/reduction of particles in a metastable system as well as heat (mass) exchange with the environment. A generalized system of equations describes various physical and chemical processes of phase transformations, such as the growth and dissolution of crystals, the evaporation of droplets, the boiling of liquids and the combustion of a polydisperse fuel. The ways of analytical solution of the formulated integrodifferential system of equations based on the saddle-point technique and the separation of variables method are considered. The theory can be applied when describing the evolution of an ensemble of particles at the initial and intermediate stages of phase transformation when the distances between the particles are large enough, and interactions between them can be neglected. © 2022 by the authors. 16. Vibratory polishing of multiphase CuZn30//CuZn80 diffusion pairs for electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) characterization

Abstract

The influence of vibratory polishing time on the quality of EBSD mappings of a multiphase microstructure is investigated and optimized for CuZn30//CuZn80 diffusion couples. The diffusion couples consist of four different phases whose hardness varies between 70 HV0.1 and 454 HV0.1. These are first mechanically ground, polished and finally prepared by vibratory polishing. A vibratory polishing of 2 h provides for all phases the highest quality of the recorded Kikuchi patterns (Image Quality values) and the highest correct assignment of the individual pixels of the mapping. Preparation artifacts, such as relief formation, only appear at higher vibratory polishing times (> 2 h). A vibratory polishing of the diffusion couples of 0.5 h already provides sufficient surface quality for EBSD analyses.

Abstract

Amorphous silicon carbon nitride films were deposited on silicon and WC-Co substrates by magnetron reactive sputtering in Ar/N2 gas mixture with carbon and silicon targets. The influence of experimental parameters on the films morphological, structural and mechanical properties was studied. The general morphology of the film is observed by SEM and TEM. EDXS and FTIR were used to determine the film chemical composition and the nature of chemical bonding. It was observed that C≡N bonds and nitrogen percentage in the film are promoted when the substrate is biased. The role of an underlayer and the influence of its nature on the film adhesion on WC/Co substrates were also studied. In this case, nanoscratch tests showed that a SiNx thin film could be an appropriate underlayer.

Abstract

An 18-year-old white woman had nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Copper-colored skin was noted on physical examination, and serum chemistry values were normal. Subsequent fever, disorientation, and confusion led to the discovery of Addison's disease, which responded well to corticosteroid replacement therapy. Addisonian and anorexic patients exhibit clinical similarities, including nausea, vomiting, weight loss, abdominal pain, cold intolerance, hypothermia, and orthostasis. Other commonalities include prolongation of electrocardiographic PR and QT intervals and generalized slowing on electroencephalogram. Important differences include a brown color to the skin in Addison's disease instead of a yellowish color in anorexia. Addisonian patients also display hypocortisolism, hypoglycemia, and hyperkalemia, in contrast to the hypercortisolism, hyperglycemia, and hypokalemia seen in anorexia.

Abstract

It is important to consider Wilson's disease in patients with psychiatric signs and symptoms who also have abnormal liver function test results or neurologic findings, or both. Thorough evaluation of emotionally disturbed persons, including complete history taking, careful physical examination, and appropriate laboratory profile, generally rules out or arouses suspicion of Wilson's disease during routine screening. Laboratory abnormalities necessitate repeated studies and additional family and personal history taking with emphasis on possible Wilson's disease. Further workup may then be indicated. Prompt recognition and vigorous, consistent treatment can minimize symptoms and tissue damage. Identifying a case of Wilson's disease and seeing clinical aspects improve with appropriate therapy is gratifying.

Abstract

Calcium was introduced into the TEXT tokamak, and its spectral emission was recorded in the 50-360 A range by an absolutely calibrated grazing incidence spectrometer. These observations of highly ionized species of calcium at known conditions of plasma electron temperature and density allow testing of line brightness ratio predictions based on theoretical values of temperature-dependent electron excitation rates. The confirmation of the expected ratios in Be I-like to O I-like calcium allows more confident use of these ratios as a density diagnostic of remote astrophysical sources such as solar flares.

Abstract

Spectra of the Delta n = 0 (2-2) transitions of Be I-like ions, C III, O V, F VI, and Ne VII emitted from the TEXT tokamak, were measured with photometrically calibrated instrumentation and compared to the predictions of several models which differ in their treatment of electron impact excitation, using either the distorted wave or R-matrix approach. It was found that the ions from C III to Ne VII were located near the edge of the plasma, at densities between 10 to the 12th and 13th/cu cm. The experimental line ratios were compared with several sets of computations. Agreement is obtained between the experimental data and computations by using the R-matrix technique. This leads to the conclusion that the effect resonances must be included in collision strength calculations, particularly at low nuclear charge. The results show that the line ratios studied may be used with confidence as electron density diagnostics for laboratory or astrophysical plasmas.
