Weight loss solutions are on the rise, and there is growing interest in natural alternatives to the pharmaceuticals in the market, which are not devoid of relevant side effects. To this end, the objective of the current study was to assess the effects of a botanical-based blend comprised of lemon verbena and hibiscus extracts on weight management, body fat, appetite, lipid, and glucose profiles in an overweight population for 90 days. The volunteers presented significant weight loss in absence of diet (approximately 3 kg, −3.4% total body weight), which coincided with decreased body fat (−1.7%, equivalent to an almost 6% decrease compared to initial value). Body fat was assessed by anthropometry, electrical bioimpedance and DEXA scans. Cholesterol levels were also significantly decreased (approximately 7% decrease). Satiety assessment revealed that the product contributed to increased feeling of fullness and satisfaction after a meal compared to the placebo group, which could contribute to the weight loss observed. Blood glucose and blood pressure levels remained unchanged, which was expected as the volunteers were normoglycemic and their blood pressure was in the healthy range. In conclusion, daily supplementation of a botanical-based blend contributes to weight loss in overweight individuals in absence of diet, while not affecting other parameters that are in the healthy range. Introduction: Fasciolosis is one of the most important parasitic disease common among both humans and livestock. That causes several health problems and economical losses in different parts of Iran. In order to control this disease, chemicals are used, which in some cases lead to resistance to the used substances and cause environmental problems. In this study, the effectiveness of the ethanolic extract of Lippia citriodora on the eggs of Fasciola hepatica is investigated. Methods: Fasciola hepatica eggs were obtained from the liver and gall bladders of naturally infected sheep and kept at 4˚C until use. Ethanol extract of Lippia citriodora kunth was provided from dried leaves. The eggs were exposed to Different concentration of extract. Concentrations of Lippia citriodora extract (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75 and 100%). Control group eggs were placed in chlorine-free water. Egg and embryo development stages to complete and release miracidia were examined every day. Ethical considerations: This study was conducted after receiving the code of ethics (93-175-13) from the University Research Council. Results: In concentration of 10 percent Lippia citriodora, miracidia was formed after 16 days in the egg. With increasing of concentration percentage of the extract, time of miracidia formation in eggs also rose. The time of miracidia formation between cases and control group is significantly different (P < 0.05). Background and purpose: Plaque-induced gingivitis is the most common form of gingivitis caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaques. Chlorhexidine mouthwash is one of the oldest and most effective treatments for this disease. Considering the adverse effects of chemical mouthwashes and turning to plant extracts, this study compared the anti-inflammatory effects of Lippia citrodora and chlorhexidine mouthwashes in patients with plaque-induced gingivitis. Materials and methods: In this single-blind randomized clinical trial, 72 patients with plaque-induced generalized chronic gingivitis were randomly divided into three groups of 24 patients receiving Lippia citrodora, chlorhexidine, and placebo mouthwashes. Gingival (GI), plaque (PI), and bleeding on probing (BOP) indexes were measured for the Ramfjord teeth of each patient on days 0, 7, and 21 and inputted to SPSS software (Version 22). Comparisons before and after interventions in each group were performed by paired t-test or its non-parametric equivalent for GI and PI, as well as the McNemar test for BOP. An intergroup comparison was performed by independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for GI and PI, and chi-square for BOP. Lemon verbena infusions are widely appreciated due to their agreeable lemony flavor and medicinal properties. In this study, the antioxidant potential, phenolic profile, and free amino acid profile of lemon verbena infusions from different commercial brands were studied. Characterization by UHPLC-QTOF-HRMS allowed the identification of 34 phenolics. The free amino acid profile (by RP-HPLC-FLD) was assessed for the first time, allowing the quantification of 16 amino acids. Furthermore, the infusions showed high antioxidant activity by different assays (ferric reducing antioxidant power, DPPH• scavenging, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity assays), which in turn were significantly correlated with total phenolics and total flavonoid contents. Notwithstanding, phenylalanine seemed to have also an impact on the antioxidant activity of the infusions, with significant correlations found. Finally, significant differences were found in all the evaluated parameters for one of the four commercial brands herein studied, which was possibly related to the different geographical origins of this sample. Objective: Acrylamide (ACR) neurotoxicity is induced by different mechanisms such as oxidative stress and apoptosis. Scientific researchs have indicated the antioxidative properties of Lippia citriodora. The protective effect of L. citriodora aqueous and ethanolic extracts on ACR-induced neurotoxicity was investigated.Materials and methods: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 13 groups: (1) control, (2) ACR (50 mg/kg, i.p.), (3-6) ACR+aqueous extract (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.p.), (7-10) ACR+ethanolic extract (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.p.), (11) aqueous extract (100 mg/kg), (12) ethanolic extract (100 mg/kg), and (13) ACR+Vitamin E (200 mg/kg, every other day, i.p.). After 11 days, gait score, MDA, and GSH levels in brain cortical tissue were measured. In the in vitro test, the viability of PC12 cells (using MTT test), the amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS; using DCFH-DA method), and the protein levels of Bax, Bcl2 and caspase 3 (by western blotting) were measured.Results: In the in vitro study, the IC50 for the treatment of PC 12 cells with ACR after 24 hr was 6 mM. ACR decreased cell viability, but increased ROS level, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and caspase-3 protein level. Pre-treatment by L. citriodora extracts (15-120 µg/ml) ameliorated the toxic effects of ACR on PC12 cells. In the in vivo experiment, ACR-induced movement disorders increased MDA but decreased GSH content. The extracts of L. citriodora improved ACR toxic effects.Conclusion: Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of L. citriodora were found to reduce ACR-induced neurotoxicity via inhibiting oxidative stress and apoptosis.

Lippia citriodora and Olea europaea are known for their shared common bioactivities. Although both matrices are rich in similar families of bioactive compounds, their specific phytochemical compounds are mostly different. Since these compounds can be metabolized in the organism, this study hypothesized that common bioavailable metabolites may contribute to their similar bioactive effects. To test this, an acute double-blind intervention study in humans was conducted with blood samples collected at multiple time points. Using an untargeted metabolomic approach based on HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS, 66 circulating metabolites were detected, including 9 common to both extracts, such as homovanillic acid sulfate and glucuronide derivates, hydroxytyrosol sulfate, etc. These common metabolites displayed significantly different T max values depending on the source, suggesting distinct metabolization pathways for each extract. The study highlights how shared bioavailable metabolites may underlie similar bioactivities observed between these two plant sources.

Introduction: Postpartum depression has harmful effects on mother and infant. Regarding the sedative effects of infusion Lippia citriodora (L.C) or lemon verbena in traditional medicine, this study was performed with aim to evaluate the effects of aqueous and alcoholic leave extracts of L.C on postpartum depression. Lemon verbena essential oil is extracted from Lippia citriodora syn. Aloysia citriodora plants. Over centuries, the herb has been used in folk medicine for preparing infusions used in the treatment of gastrointestinal and respiratory ailments. Lemon verbena essential oil is primarily obtained by hydrodistillation. Its yield and chemical composition vary depending on the geographical location, drying methods, harvesting period, isolation and packaging methods, and storage duration. Its chief components are citral - a mixture of neral and geranial - and limonene. In lemon verbena essential oils from different parts of the world, limonene or 1,8-cineole may dominate over other compounds. The flowering period is the best phenological stage of the plant for harvesting, during which essential oil containing a high citral content can be obtained with high yields. Aloysia citriodora essential oil exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities and is prescribed for many common psychological problems, including stress and insomnia. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed that L. citriodora essential oil exhibits a wide spectrum of biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and insect repellent properties. Objective: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is among the most prevalent diseases in the world, and its severity is usually assessed through coronary angiography (CA). Anxiety is the most prevalent problem before angiography. The aim of this study was to evaluate Crocus sativus (saffron) and Lippia citriodora Kunth (lippia) extracts and saffron-lippia extract combination on anxiety among the candidates for CA. Materials and Methods: This double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial in four month was conducted on 120 angiography candidates in Valiasr hospital, Birjand, Iran. The random allocation was doing through block randomization to saffron, lippia, saffron-lippia, and placebo groups; four hours before angiography, participants in these groups respectively received a single dose of saffron extract capsule (40 mg), lippia extract capsule (40 mg), saffron-lippia extract capsule (20 mg saffron and 20 mg lippia), and lactulose capsule (40 mg). Introduction: Polyphenols have shown capacity to improve appetite sensation, leading to enhanced control of body weight. However, despite being related with hunger-related hormones, metabolic and mechanism are not well known. Methods: The effectiveness of a nutraceutical composed of extract to Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdarrifa (Lc-Hs) for controlling satiety and hunger was analyzed in a cross-over, placebo-controlled (Pla) clinical intervention. The study was divided in two 60-day periods separated by 30-day length wash-out period. At the end of each period, overweight and obese subjects (n = 33; age = 33.76 ± 12.23; BMI = 28.20 kg/m2 ± 2.47; fat mass 30.65 ± 8.39%; both sexes were proposed to eat an ad-libitum meal. Meanwhile, appetite sensation was determined by visual analog scales at different times. Moreover, blood extraction was performed to determine biochemical parameters (lipid and glucidic profile and safety parameters) and to evaluate hunger-related hormones (insulin, leptin, ghrelin, adiponectin, GLP-1 and peptide YY). Results: A decrease in appetite sensation was observed in Lc-Hs treatment, showing higher satiety quotient (Pla = 3.36 ± 2.33%mm/kcal; Lc-Hs = 5.53 ± 2.91%mm/kcal; p < 0.0001). Area under the curve was higher in Pla compared to Lc-Hs during the test, from baseline to minute 240 (240 (Pla 9136.65 ± 2261.46% x min−1; Lc-Hs 8279.73 ± 2745.71% x min−1; p < 0.014). Energy consumption was lower for subjects treated with Lc-Hs (774.44 ± 247.77 kcal) compared to those treated with Pla (849.52 ± 246.54 kcal) (p < 0.004). Leptin values varied from baseline (Pla 12.36 ± 1.98 ng/mL; Lc-Hs 13.13 ± 1.99 ng/mL) to the end of the study (Pla 12.60 ± 2.02 ng/mL; Lc-Hs 12.06 ± 2.05 ng/mL; p < 0.047). GLP-1 values varied (p < 0.001) in Lc-Hs treatment from baseline (4.34 ± 0.49 ng/mL) to the end of the study (3.23 ± 0.52 ng/mL). Conclusion: The supplementation with the Lc-Hs extract decreases appetite sensation in overweight and obese population, reducing calorie intake after an ad-libitum meal. Due to variation on hunger-related hormones and the relationship between satiety feeling, it would be interesting to develop future research focused on the variation of the hormones themselves. Lippia citriodora H.B.K is an herbal species which contains several aroma compounds and the leaves of the plant are utilized as a seasoning for food preparations and flavoring beverages. In this study, the essential oil composition of the L. citriodora growing in semi-arid ecological conditions in Diyarbakır Turkey was determined at different plant parts taken from the upper (leaves and flowers), middle (leaves), and lower portions (leaves). The highest essential oil content (3.7 µl/g in w/w) was obtained from the lower part of the plant. The essential oil of L. citriodora was analyzed by GC/MS and GC/FID. Although the major essential oil composition of the oil was obtained as caryophyllene oxide, limonene, geranial, and neral, caryophyllene oxide and limonene showed significant changes with respect to different plant parts. While the rate of caryophyllene oxide gradually decreases from the lower parts of the plant to the upper parts; it was observed that the limonene ratio increases towards the upper parts of the plant. Principal component analysis (PCA) on the basis of the contents of the 31 compounds showed that two principal components had an eigen value greater than 1 and the first principal component explained 80. 39% of the total variation. In addition to the remarkable chemical differences of L. citriodora essential oil regarding the caryophyllene oxide and limonene, the proportion of these compounds has been observed to be significantly higher than the literature values. Background and objectives: Leishmaniasis is a tropical disease caused by protozoan parasites from the genus Leishmania. In this study, we aimed at investigating the in vitro anti-leishmanial effect of essential oils of Rosmarinus officinalis, Mentha pulegium, Foeniculum vulgare, Lippia citriodora and Pelargonium graveolens. Methods: The essential oils were prepared from freshly dried and powdered plants with steam-distilled water. In this study, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Lippia citriodora were obtained by the Maceration method. The total phenol content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity (based on DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging activity and FRAP methods) and antimicrobial effect (based on disc diffusion agar, well diffusion agar, minimum inhibitory concentration, and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration) of the extracts were investigated. Total phenols (72.55 vs. 60.32 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (40.5 vs. 32.25 mg QE/g) contents of the ethanolic extract were higher compared to the aqueous extract. Antioxidant activity results revealed that the ethanolic extract was more effective in scavenging DPPH free radicals (45.4 mg/ml vs. 52.5 mg/ml) and ABTS free radicals (41.48 mg/ml vs. 47.65 mg/ml) with a greater reducing power (15.1 μmol Fe/g vs. 12.2 μmol Fe/g) in comparison to the aqueous one. Antimicrobial effect of the extracts against pathogenic microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Candida albicans) showed that Gram-positive organisms were generally more sensitive than the Gram-negative ones, and the antimicrobial activity was more pronounced in the presence of the ethanolic extract. Based on the results, the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of L. citriodora could be introduced as natural preservatives to control the oxidation reaction and the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Introduction: Essential oils from natural plants are widely use around the world to relief mental conditions. The aim of this investigation was to determine the anxiolytic-like effect of essential oils extracted from Lippia alba and Lippia citriodora. Methods: The oil was extracted by hydro-distillation for 3 hours using a modified Clevenger-type apparatus and then chemical composition was investigated by gas chromatography analysis (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Moreover, a randomized experimental trial was conducted, where 95 participants were divided into 3 groups, comprising a waiting list control group and two experimental groups treated with essential oils by inhalation. The anxiety index was evaluated by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Measures were taken two times: pretest and posttest. Results: chemical analysis showed that carvone was the main component (64.5%) for Lippia alba essential oil and geranial (39.8%) for Lippia citriodora. State and Trait anxiety scores showed a decrease in posttest study phase in comparison with pretest in all experimental groups (p<0.05). Cohen's D and Hedges' G scores show a large size effect in state anxiety for experimental group treated with Lippia alba while moderate changes were found for the rest of variables in all experimental groups. Conclusion: the essential oils extracted from Lippia alba and Lippia citriodora may be useful as a mean to counteract anxiety, specifically state anxiety showing short-terms benefits. Background: Pre-drying operations and drying methods have a significant effect on the quantity and quality of plants essential oils. Objective: In this study, the effect of pre-drying operation and vacuum oven-drying was investigated on the essential oil content and composition of Lippia citriodora. Method: This research was conducted as a factorial experiment in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The two studied factors were (1) pre-drying operations in two levels including pre-drying and without pre-drying operation, and also (2) drying methods in 5 levels including fresh plant, shade drying and vacuum oven-drying at 35, 45 and 55°C at 0.5 bar atmospheric pressure. In this study, the amount of pigments and essential oil content and composition were measured. Results: The results indicated that the highest chlorophyll content was related to treatment of vacuum oven-drying at 55 °C with a pre-drying treatment, while the highest amount of essential oil was obtained by vacuum oven-drying at 45 °C without a pre-drying operation. The highest amounts of monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, and geranial were obtained by drying at 55 °C, while the highest content of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated sesquiterpenes and neral were observed in Low-temperature drying. Conclusion: In general, this study indicated that vacuum oven-drying at 45 °C was the best drying method for obtaining maximum content of essential oil and active components.

Recently, the relationship between nutrients and health is becoming since natural dietary products as polyphenols are being considered by their potential for the management of several diseases. We aimed to investigate the capacity of Lippia citriodora compounds to modulate AMP-activated protein kinase activity (AMPK) on a hypertrophic adipocyte model. HPLC semi-preparative purification method and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass detection with electrospray ionization (RP-HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS) were used to obtain de compounds from L. citriodora extract. AMPK activity was measured on the hypertrophic 3T3-L1 adipocyte model by immunofluorescence microscopy. Four compounds of 29 total compounds have been tentatively identified in L. citriodora for the first time by HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS. Phenylpropanoids (verbascoside), iridoids (gardoside) and flavonoids (luteolin-7-diglucoronide) were the best candidates to account for activating AMPK capacity. The combination of specific polyphenols from L. citriodora, which showed strong activating AMPK capacity, could be an alternative in the management of obesity-associated diseases.

Objective(s): Regarding Lemon verbena gastroprotective effects, we investigated the protective effects of Lemon verbena extracts on reducing gastric ulcer induced by indomethacin. Materials and Methods: Rats received aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Lemon verbena (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg), zileuton (100 mg/kg), montelukast (10 mg/kg), or 1% Tween 80 in presence or absence of indomethacin (100 mg/kg). Results: Indomethacin produced stomach ulcer and increased neutrophils percentage and MDA level compared with the control group (P<0.001). Co-administration of indomethacin and zileuton, montelukast and ethanolic (200 mg/kg) (P<0.001), aqueous extract (200 mg/kg) (P<0.05) reduced ulcer compared with the indomethacin group (P<0.001). Ethanolic extracts (100 and 200 mg/kg) and aqueous extract (200 mg/kg) reduced the MDA level (P<0.001). Ethanolic (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) and aqueous extracts (200 mg/kg) significantly decreased neutrophils percentage compared with the indomethacin group (P<0.001). Conclusion: Aqueous and particularly ethanolic extracts of Lemon verbena have protective effects on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study is to highlight the chemical composition, the insecticidal and the antibacterial activities of essential oil of Lippia citriodora growing spontaneously in central Morocco, particularly in Beni Mellal. After extracting the essential oil by a clevenger type distiller from the aerial parts, all constituents were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Their chemical composition of chemotype revealed the presence of 45 compounds in the essential oil, which has Geranial as the major constituent with a content of approximately (35.45%), followed by Neral (26.11%) and Limonene (14.06%), with a total percentage of (75.62%). The insecticidal activities were carried out against three weevils: Sitophilus granarius, Sitophilus oryzae and Sitophilus zeamais, the results of this test to show a very important activity during 24 hours of the treatments confirmed by the values of LD50 and LD90 which tend towards 0, or this activity was probably due to the major constituents. The bacterial power was studied in vitro against gram-positive bacteria: Bacillus cereus (CECT 193) and Listeria monocytogenes (CECT 4032), gram-negative bacteria: Yersinia enterocolitica (CECT 9144), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CECT 116) and Staphylococcus aureus (CECT 239), the results of this tests made it possible to quantitatively assess the bacterial power by looking for minimum MIC inhibitory concentrations and minimum MBC bactericidal concentrations, which have a varying activity depending on the strain tested. Lippia citriodora is commonly used in Iranian folk medicine for treatment of many disorders. Since there scientific data to prove the anxiolytic properties of this plant in Iran are scarce, we aimed to evaluate the sedative and anxiolytic activity of the leaf extract and essence of L. citriodora in an animal model of anxiety. The extract and the essence used were obtained after maceration and hydro-distillation of the leaves of L. citriodora, respectively. We evaluated the anti-anxiety profile and sedative activity of diazepam (1 mg/kg i.p. as the standard), hydroethanolic extract (200 and 400 mg/kg i.p.) and the essence (10, 15, and 50 mg/kg i.p.) of leaves of L. citriodora using elevated plus-maze and locomotor activity. We also used flumazenil, to find out if the possible effects are mediated through gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)/benzodiazepine receptor complex. The results showed that the essence of L. citriodora at a dose of 15 mg/kg is the most effective anxiolytic dose. Interestingly, flumazenil reversed this action of the essence as well as that of diazepam. The extract even at a dose of 400 mg/kg did not show significant anxiolytic effect. In locomotor activity studies, the essence caused sedation to a lesser extent than diazepam. The results suggest that the essence of this plant could be a better candidate for further analysis and fractionation. As the anxiolytic effect of the essence is reversed by flumazenil, it is possible that the GABA receptor could be involved in mediating these effects.

Objectives: The extract of Lippia citriodora and its main component, verbascoside, are known for their hypnotic effects in traditional medicine. In this study, the anxiolytic and hypnotic effects of L. citriodora leave extracts and verbascoside were evaluated in mice. Materials and Methods: Animals were divided into 11 groups of six mice each. Group I received normal saline, Group II received Diazepam (2 mg/kg) as positive control, Groups III, IV and V received L. citriodora ethanolic extracts (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, respectively), Groups VI, VII and VIII received L. citriodora aqueous extracts (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, respectively) and Groups IX, X and XI received Verbascoside (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively). All agents were administrated intraperitoneally. To evaluate hypnotic activity, pentobarbital sleeping test, and for anxiolytic activity, elevated plus-maze (EPM), locomotor activity, open field and motor coordination (rotarod test) tests were used. To understand the role of GABAA receptor, flumazenil was also administered. Results: The extracts and verbascoside increased the time spent and number of entries in the open arms of EPM. Moreover, these agents significantly increased the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital. In addition, the highest dose of extracts and verbascoside reduced time spent on the rod and total locomotion in the open field tests, respectively. Flumazenil inhibited the effects of extracts and verbascoside in EPM and hypnotic tests. Conclusion: These results suggested that ethanolic and aqueous extracts of L. citriodora and verbascoside exhibit anxiolytic, hypnotic and muscle relaxant effects especially at the highest doses and these effects are partially due to the interaction with GABAA receptor.

Background: Lippia citriodora H.B.K is an important medicinal and aromatic plant from the Verbenaceae family. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigation of essential oil percentage, E-citral (geranial) content and morphophysiological changes of Lippia citriodora in response to induction of bioactive compounds and plant growth regulators. Methods: This study has been conducted on the base of factorial experiment in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The first factor included the application of bioregulators at four levels that were distilled water, 50 ppm gibberellic acid (GA3) + 50 ppm IBA, 50 ppm GA3 + 100 ppm IBA and 100 ppm GA3 + 50 ppm IBA. The second factor was chitosan inductions at two levels: distilled water and 400 ppm chitosan. The third factor was methanol induction at two levels: distilled water and 5% v/v methanol. Results: The measured traits were significantly affected (P≤0.01) by the interaction of bioregulators, methanol and chitosan except for plant height, number of branches, leave length that were significantly affected at 0.05 level. The highest content of essential oil achieved by 400 ppm chitosan and 5% V/V methanol. The highest amount of leaves number and E-citral content were observed at 400 ppm chitosan. The maximum value of root and stem fresh and dry weight and leaf dry weight were obtained at 50 ppm GA3 + 100 ppm IBA. Conclusion: Generally, the interaction of foliar application of plant growth regulators, methanol and chitosan could be positively effect on essential oil, E-citral (geranial) content and morpho-physiological traits.

Lippia citriodora is a flowering plant cultivated for its lemon-scented leaves and used in folk medicine for the preparation of tea for the alleviation of symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders, cold, and asthma. The oil extracted from the plant leaves was shown to possess antioxidant potential and to exert antiproliferative activity against breast cancer. The aim of this study was to further investigate potential antitumor effects of L. citriodora oil (LCO) on breast cancer. The in vitro antiproliferative activity of LCO was examined against murine DA3 breast cancer cells by the sulforhodamine B assay. We further explored the LCO’s pro-apoptotic potential with the Annexin-PI method. The LCO’s anti-migratory effect was assessed by the wound-healing assay. LCO was found to inhibit the growth of DA3 cells in vitro, attenuate their migration, and induce apoptosis. Finally, oral administration of LCO for 14 days in mice inhibited by 55% the size of developing tumors in the DA3 murine tumor model. Noteworthy, in the tumor tissue of LCO-treated mice the apoptotic marker cleaved caspase-3 was elevated, while a reduced protein expression of survivin was observed. These results indicate that LCO, as a source of bioactive compounds, has a very interesting nutraceutical potential.

The essential oil of Lippia citriodora extracted by hydrodistillation from dry leaves with a yield of 0.3 % which characterization by TLC, UV-Vis, and IRTF analyses make it possible to distinguish the presence of aldehydes functions within the chemical composition. The GC-MS has permitted to confirm and to identify the neral and the geranial in appreciable proportions in the chemical composition of Lippia citriodora essential oil. The thionation of the carbonyl compounds of the essential oil has led to the transformation of the carbonyl compounds into corresponding thiones. The UV-Vis spectroscopy and the FT-IR spectra have shown the disappearance of the aldehyde function and its replacement by thione and thiol functions in solution by tautomery. The GC-MS has permitted to identify the formation of unsaturated cyclic compounds such as the 2-Isopropyl-5-methyl-cyclohexa-2,5-dienethione, the 6-Isopropyl-3-methyl-cyclohexa-2,4-dienethione and the 5-Isopropenyl-2-methyl-cyclohex-2-enethione, as well as an aromatic compound namely the thiothymol (2-Isopropyl-5-methyl-benzenethiol).The antibacterial and especially antifungal activity of the essential oil of Lippia citriodora has been greatly improved with the replacement of the oxygen by the sulphur and therefore the increase of the hydrophobic character and the volatility of the chemical composition of the oil. Abstract Energy metabolism is one of the main sources of reactive oxygen species leading to oxidation and inflammation in pathophysiological processes. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cell lines from knock-out mice for paraoxonase-1 and from transgenic mice overexpressing monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 were obtained as model of pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory scenarios. Theobroma cacao and Lippia citriodora (worldwide consumed and common ingredient of many food products) were tested in these cell models to assess the action of polyphenols in the energy management. Our metabolomics experiments show a different behavior of polyphenols: T. cacao extract partially reverts the effect of LPS in a pro-oxidant scenario through the antioxidant properties of theobromine, flavonols and procyanidins, while L. citriodora seems to act mainly in a pro-inflammatory cell model through the action of verbascoside decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and MCP-1. Nevertheless, the action of polyphenols cannot be attributed only to a mechanism of action but the sum of different modulations in biological pathways. The capacity of both plant extracts to decrease α-ketoglutarate levels merits special attention due to the implications in future medicine. The action of polyphenols modulating oxidative stress, cytokine production and epigenetic changes make an interesting source of bioactive compounds for nutraceutical or functional food purposes. The effect of Lippia citriodora extract on selected blood parameters and on plasma oxidative markers in Avelignese horses was evaluated. Twenty‐four horses were divided into three groups, consisting of eight animals each. Results of two experimental groups, 0.5 mg of verbascoside per kg of metabolic body weight (bw0.75) in the low‐dose group (LVB) and 1.0 mg of verbascoside per kg of metabolic body weight (bw0.75) in the high‐dose group (HVB), were compared to the control group (CON). Groups fed L. citriodora extract (HVB and LVB) showed a significant decrease in triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (p < .01), bilirubin, and transaminases (p < .05), and an increase in HDL cholesterol (p < .01) compared to the CON group. Oxidative status was improved due to significant decrease in plasma concentration of ROMs and TBARS (p < .01) and increase in levels of vitamin A and vitamin E (p < .01). Based on obtained results, it is assumed that dietary supplementation with L. citriodora extract might find a useful application in horse feeding, with positive impact observed in blood parameters and plasma oxidative markers, with beneficial effects on the physiological welfare of livestock animals. The aim of the study was to characterize the chemical composition and biological properties of the essential oil from the plant Lippia citriodora and Citrus limon grown in Iraq. The essential oils were extracted by hydro-distillation method and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC-MS. The essential oils of aerial parts of L. citriodora and C. limon peels were also examined for their analgesic effects by acetic acid writhing reflex and hot plate test method. The essential oil of aerial parts of L. citriodora yielded 27 compounds amounting to 87.92 % and essential oil of C. limon peels yielded 24 compounds amounting 97.28 %. The major constituents of EO of aerial parts of L. citriodora were citral (20.21 %), neral (14.37 %), myrcene (8.50%), geraniol (7.45 %) and caryophyllene (5.45 %) and linalool (1.59 %). The major constituents of essential oil of C. limon peels were limonene (29.52 %), β-pinene (23.89 %), citronellal (11.53 %) and thymol (9.79 %). The essential oils of aerial parts of L. citriodora and C. limon peels shows dose dependent analgesic effects in both acetic acid writhing reflex and hot plate test. Hypertension is an important factor of cardiovascular diseases and contributes to their negative consequences including mortality. The World Health Organization estimated that 54% of strokes and 47% of cases of ischemic heart illness are related to high blood pressure. Recently, Hibiscus sabdariffa (HS) and Lippia citriodora (LC) have attracted scientific interest, and they are recognized for their high content of polyphenols as these may prevent several disease factors, such as hypertension. The aim of the present study is to determine if supplementation with an HS-LC blend (MetabolAid®) may be effective for the treatment of type 1 hypertensive sedentary populations. A total of 80 type 1 hypertensive subjects of both sexes were included in the study and were treated with placebo or the HS-LC extract, and both groups were treated over 84 days. The blood pressure (diastolic, systolic, and pulse pressure) was measured throughout the day, for each of the days of the study duration and determined using Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM). Physical activity was determined throughout the study to ensure similar conditions related to exercise. The results showed the capacity for reducing the blood pressure parameters in the case of the HS-LC extract. The daily consumption of the HS-LC extract but not the placebo over 84 days was able to reduce the daytime parameters related to blood pressure. The most remarkable results were observed in the measurements performed during the daytime, especially in the systolic blood pressure showing statistically significant variation.

Introduction: Because of resistance and side effects to common antifungal drugs activity, the research on herbal substances with antifungal activity is frequent. Lemon verbena (Lippia citriodora) is a member of Verbenaceae family. The aim of this study was to determine the anti-candida activities of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of the lemon verbena leaves and compare them with nystatin and fluconazole. Methods: In this 2015 study, 15 clinical isolates and standard strain of candida albicans PTCC 5027 were used, and the inhibitory effects of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts, Nystatin and Fluconazole, were evaluated using disk and well diffusion methods. Also, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined. Five concentrations of aqueous and ethanolic extracts (156-2500 μg/ml), Nystatin (8-128 μg/ml) and Fluconazole (4- 64 μg/ml) were used in disk and well diffusion methods, and nine concentrations of aqueous and ethanolic extracts (19-5000 μg/ml), Nystatin (0.5-128 μg/ml), and Fluconazole (0.25-64 μg/ml) were applied for MIC. Data were analyzed using Tukey's post-hoc and one-way ANOVA tests. The significant level was considered p < 0.05 in the current study. Results: In the well and disk diffusion techniques, limited growth inhibition halos were produced around some clinical isolates at different concentrations of ethanolic extract; however, no growth inhibitory halo was observed with any concentrations of the aqueous extract. The MIC values of ethanolic extract, aqueous extract, Nystatin and Fluconazole for clinical isolated and standard strain were 833 ± 78.5and 625μg/ml; 4156 ± 67.4 and 2500 μg/ml; 10.13 ± 1.91 and 4 μg/ml; and 1.97 ± 0.25 and 1 μg/ml, respectively. Conclusion: The results showed that the ethanolic extract was stronger than the aqueous extract of this plant, which can be used as an alternative for drugs. It is recommended that the ethanolic extract of this plant be investigated in vivo for better evaluation of its efficacy and properties.

Objective: Safety of Lippia citriodora, as a herbal remedy, in pregnancy has not yet been evaluated. This study aimed to identify the effect of L. citriodora aqueous extract on pregnancy outcome in mice. Materials and Methods: Timed-pregnant mice received doses of 0.5 g/kg/day L. citriodora aqueous extract or the vehicle control during organogenesis, intraperitoneally. Maternal body weights were measured throughout the pregnancy. The litters were examined for external malformations and skeletal abnormalities. Fetuses were stained with Alizarin red S and Alcian blue. Results: There were no significant differences in mean maternal weight gain during pregnancy between groups. Also, no significant differences were observed in mean number of implantation, live and resorbed fetuses between control and treated groups. The prevalence of all types of deformity was low and similar to control group (%1.11). Conclusion: The results of this study show that moderate consumption of L. citriodora as an infusion or tea appears to be safe to be used during pregnancy and does not have toxic effects on development of mouse embryo.

Phenolic compounds have shown to have a high bioactive potential against various pathologies, postulating as an interesting alternative to manage some diseases. In this sense, both Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdariffa are two botanical sources with a demonstrated high bioactive potential, in which their antioxidant capacity stands out. In this work, the optimization of the extraction conditions for the recovery of phytochemicals from L. citriodora leaves and H. sabdariffa calyces has been carried out using Response Surface Methodologies (RSM) considering their total polar compounds measured by HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS and Folin-Ciocalteu assay, and its antioxidant capacity evaluated by Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) assays. The results showed that to maximize the antioxidant capacity in H. sabdariffa, a moderate temperature and high ethanol percentage are needed, while a low temperature and a high percentage of ethanol are needed in L. citriodora. In addition, with the results obtained in the multiple response analysis, it is possible to affirm the importance of this type of analysis to develop functional ingredients, taking into account both total content of phenolic compounds and their bioactivity. Furthermore, as confirmed in this study, these analyses can be extrapolated in different techniques and in different matrices, with phenolic compounds from different families being important to develop new high added value products for food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries.

Lippia citriodora has been demonstrated to have a wide variety of phytochemicals which provide benefits to human health acting as antioxidants or anti-obesogenics. In this study, these phytochemicals were recovered using a microwave-assisted technology and applying optimal conditions and microencapsulated using spray drying. In this study, two different carbohydrates, maltodextrin (MD) and inulin (IN), were compared as carriers in the encapsulation procedure. The spray drying process was optimized by using a response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design 22, where air inlet temperature and the sample:encapsulating agent ratio (S:EA) were selected as independent variables. Both designs were analyzed equally to evaluate differences between each carrying agent on polar compounds’ encapsulation (process yield (Y%), encapsulation efficiency (EE%) and recovery of compounds (R%)) during the spray drying. The EE% and R% of each polar compound was monitored by High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer by electrospray interface (HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS). The results showed that the use of IN as a carrier increased the powder recovered and the recovery of polar compounds after the spray dry process, whereas MD achieved a higher encapsulation efficiency.

The aim of this work was to optimize the recovery of phenolic compounds from Lippia citriodora using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). To achieve this goal, response surface methodology based on a 23 central composite design was used to evaluate the effects of the following experimental factors: temperature, pressure and co-solvent percentage. The effects of these variables on the extraction yield and total polar compound contents were evaluated. With respect to the phytochemical composition, an exhaustive individual phenolic compound quantitation was carried out by HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS to analyze the functional ingredients produced by this system design. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a standardized supercritical fluid process has been developed to obtain functional ingredients based on phenolic compounds from L. citriodora in which the individual compound concentration was monitored over the different SFE conditions. The results enabled the establishment of the optimal technical parameters for developing functional ingredients and revealed the main factors that should be included in the extraction process control. This functional food ingredient design could be used as a control system to be applied in nutraceutical and functional food production industry.

Phytochemicals from Lippia citriodora leaves were extracted by applying an innovative technology based on the use of microwaves, which represents an alternative method to extract bioactive substances. The obtained extract was incorporated into phospholipid vesicles in order to promote the antioxidant effect of the bioactive molecules present in L. citriodora extract. The extract was analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to Time-Of-Flight mass spectrometer by electrospray (HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS) and different phytochemicals were detected and quantified. The whole extract was incorporated in liposomes, glycerosomes (liposomes modified with glycerol) and propylene glycol-containing vesicles (PG-PEVs). Moreover, a biopolymer obtained from fish by-product, that is Thunnus albacares skin, was added to improve the bioactivity of the formulations. The in vitro biocompatibility and the antioxidant efficacy of the extract in solution or loaded in the vesicles were tested in primary mouse embryonic fibroblasts (3T3). The results showed the superior bioactivity of the vesicle formulations over the aqueous solution of the extract, which points to an interesting strategy for the treatment of skin disorders.

Lippia citriodora is an aromatic plant largely consumed in Morocco and throughout the world. It is well-known for its use in the field of food, medicine and aroma therapy. The production of this plant is for its local uses and for export. The therapeutic activity of L. citriodora or itsextracts mainly depends on the quality of finished products. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of irrigation with urban wastewater from Settat (Morocco) treated by lagoons on the composition of the essential oil, essential oil yield and physico-chemical composition infusion of L. citriodora. The soil used for the implantation is characterized. Physico-chemical analyses of well water and wastewater used for irrigation are analyzed. From the results obtained we found changes in the composition of the essential oil of a large number of constituents. After irrigation of L. citriodora by wastewater we observe changes in major compounds in the essential oil: decreased neral (from 15.29% to 14.34%) and geranial (from 15.63% to 14.75%) and increased limonene (from 23.39% to 25.86%). We deduce that wastewater has a beneficial effect in increasing the yield of essential oil. The infusion of L. citriodora prepared by the fresh and dried leaves irrigated with wastewater contains a high concentration of NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and the concentration of NO2–N (mg/L) exceeds 100% of the concentration of waste water.

Endophytes of medicinal plants are valuable resources for plant growth promotion and lead drug discovery. Lemon verbena, Lippia citriodora Kunth. (Verbenaceae), is an ethnomedicinal shrub. Here, the endophytic bacterium Sphingomonas paucimobilis and the endophytic fungus Aspergillus sp. isolated from L. citriodora were used for plant interaction studies. Foliar spraying and soil drenching methods of endophyte’s inocula application were used for in planta assays. The results showed that both fungal and bacterial endophytes increased the growth parameters of L. citriodora including plant height, leaf number, fresh weight and dry weight of shoot, root and leaf. Indeed, soil drenching of S. paucimobilis increased the root weight, but its foliar spray increased the plant height. Also, soil drenching of Aspergillus sp. increased the leaves dry weight, while its foliar spray increased the number of branches, leaves, and the leaves fresh weight. Soil drenching of either of both endophytes increased the antioxidant activity of L. citriodora’s foliage, but foliar sprays yielded lower increases. Endophytes had no apparent effects on the phenolics and flavonoids at the time of sampling, i.e. 30 days post-inoculation. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have been postulated as alternative green solvents for the isolation of valuable bioactive compounds from Lippia citriodora . Thus, 11 different NADESs, based on choline chloride (ChCl) as the hydrogen bond acceptor in combination with different hydrogen bond donors (organic acids, polyalcohols, sugars, and urea) were tested. According to the results obtained, ChCl-lactic acid exhibited the highest extraction yield for iridoids, 7.25 mg g −1 , phenylpropanoids, 17.23 mg g −1 , and flavonoids, 9.02 mg g −1 being significantly greater than phenylpropanoid and flavonoid yields, 15.63 and 5.43 mg g −1 respectively, extracted with methanol as conventional solvent. Subsequently, in order to optimise the most influential microwave assisted extraction (MAE) parameters, a Box-Behnken design paired with a response surface methodology were implemented. Temperature and water content showed a strong effect on the extraction of polyphenol sub-classes, while the effect of irradiation time was less noticeable on extraction yields. Temperature of 63.68 °C, a water content of 32.19% and a microwave irrdiation time of 17.08 min were the optimum conditions provided by the statistical program. The use of NADESs showed potential to facilitate the design and customisation of green tailor-made solvents which have greater extraction capacity than conventional organic solvents. The extraction of bioactive compounds from Lippia citriodora leaves ( Lc ) has been evaluated by comparison between Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE) and conventional extrations combined with HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS in order to maximize recovery of phytochemicals and to know the efficiency of both methods. To achieve these goals, conventional extractions were carried out using different concentrations of ethanol and water. On the other hand, pressurized liquid extractions were performed by a Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a Central Composite Design 2 3 model to address the bioactive compounds extraction. The independent variables selected were temperature, percentage of solvent (ethanol and water) and extraction time. The response variables were extraction yield and recovery of bioactive compounds. Thus, the optimum values to maximize yield was 200 °C, 46% ethanol and 17 min. In addition, the design versatility allowed found the optimal conditions for each chemical group and to validate them. This experimental model followed by HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS analysis offer for the first time an easy, rapid, and objective manner to optimize extraction of bioactive compounds from Lc leaves by PLE, which could be used as methodology for development functional ingredients. Recently, the relationship between nutrients and health is becoming since natural dietary products as polyphenols are being considered by their potential for the management of several diseases. We aimed to investigate the capacity of Lippia citriodora compounds to modulate AMP-activated protein kinase activity (AMPK) on a hypertrophic adipocyte model. HPLC semi-preparative purification method and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass detection with electrospray ionization (RP-HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS) were used to obtain de compounds from L. citriodora extract. AMPK activity was measured on the hypertrophic 3T3-L1 adipocyte model by immunofluorescence microscopy. Four compounds of 29 total compounds have been tentatively identified in L. citriodora for the first time by HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS. Phenylpropanoids (verbascoside), iridoids (gardoside) and flavonoids (luteolin-7-diglucoronide) were the best candidates to account for activating AMPK capacity. The combination of specific polyphenols from L. citriodora , which showed strong activating AMPK capacity, could be an alternative in the management of obesity-associated diseases. Background: Toxoplasma gondii is intracellular parasites that cause many symptoms such as encephalitis and congenital disorders. Marrubium vulgare, Salvia officinalis and lippia citriodora are herbal drugs that used to kill this organism. Our objective were to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Marrubium vulgare, Salvia officinalis and lippia citriodora in killing of toxoplasma gondii tachyzoite and evaluation by MTT assay Methods: In this survey we used Marrubium vulgare, Salvia officinalis and lippia citriodora suspension plus RPMI medium containing peritoneal tachyzoite after incubation at 37 C0. The measurement done by MTT assay and statistial assesment done by spss19 software. Our investigation based on two mediam (invitro and invivo) to approve our results. Results: In RPMI medium the killing with three herbal drugs were seen and the decrease of Absorbance were seen by MTT assay. The means of OD were 0.05 to 0.16 in presence of herbal drugs but the means of OD were 0.9 to 2.3 in absence of herbal drugs. Conclusion: Marrubium vulgare, Salvia officinalis and lippia citriodora are herbal drugs that are very useful to kill toxoplasma tachyzoite in invitro condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The location and quantity of body fat determine the health risks, limiting people with obesity. Recently, polyphenols have attracted the attention of the scientific community because of their potential use for the reduction of obesity. A proprietary formula comprised of a blend of Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdariffa has been recognized for its high content of polyphenols, powerful antioxidant molecules that may prevent weight gain and could be helpful for the treatment of obesity, as proven previously by in vivo models. The aim of the present study is to determine if the supplementation with Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdariffa is useful for the treatment of obesity and/or weight control in subjects without a controlled diet. The intake of the extract for 84 days reduced body weight, the body mass index, and the fat mass measured with both bioimpedance and densitometry. This decrease in fat mass was observed to a greater extent, being significant, in the fat mass of the trunk (chest and torso).

The aim of the study was to characterize the chemical composition and biological properties of the essential oil from the plant Lippia citriodora grown in Greece. The essential oil volatiles were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC-MS indicating citral as the major component. The antimicrobial properties were assayed using the disk diffusion method and the minimum inhibitory and non-inhibitory concentration values were determined. Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Aspergillus niger were sensitive to Lippia citriodora oil, but not Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas fragi. Adversely, all microbes tested were sensitive to citral. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,20 -azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) assays were used to assess direct antioxidant activity, which proved to be weak for both agents, while comet assay was utilized to study the cytoprotective effects against H2O2-induced oxidative damage in Jurkat cells. Interestingly, the oil showed a more profound cytoprotective effect compared to citral. The antiproliferative activity was evaluated in a panel of cancer cell lines using the sulforhodamine B (SRB) and 2,3-bis(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-S-(phenylamino) carbonyl-2-tetrazoliumhydroxide (XTT) assays and both agents demonstrated potent antiproliferative activity with citral beingmore cytotoxic than the oil. Understanding the influence of distillation time on quality and quantity of essential oils in Lemon verbena (Lippia citriodoraKunth) may help methods of this economically important essential oil to improve the production and engineer the constituent of the oils as well as decrease the energy needed for distillation. In this study the effect of distillation time on the content and constituents of the essential oil isolated from Lemon verbena by hydro-distillation method was investigated. Four distillation times such as 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 hours were investigated. The maximum essential oil content (0.73%) was achieved after 2 hours of distillation, however, the minimum essential oil content (0.57%) was observed after 1 hour of distillation. The chemical composition of the isolated essential oil was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). According to the results of GC-MS analysis, 21 major compounds were detected in essential oil. Geranial (29.65%), neral (23.16%) and limonene (15.38%) were the major constituents of analyzed essential oil. Objectives: The extract of Lippia citriodora and its main component, verbascoside, are known for their hypnotic effects in traditional medicine. In this study, the anxiolytic and hypnotic effects of L. citriodora leave extracts and verbascoside were evaluated in mice. Materials and Methods: Animals were divided into 11 groups of six mice each. Group I received normal saline, Group II received Diazepam (2 mg/kg) as positive control, Groups III, IV and V received L. citriodora ethanolic extracts (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, respectively), Groups VI, VII and VIII received L. citriodora aqueous extracts (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, respectively) and Groups IX, X and XI received Verbascoside (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively). All agents were administrated intraperitoneally. To evaluate hypnotic activity, pentobarbital sleeping test, and for anxiolytic activity, elevated plus-maze (EPM), locomotor activity, open field and motor coordination (rotarod test) tests were used. To understand the role of GABAA receptor, flumazenil was also administered. Results: The extracts and verbascoside increased the time spent and number of entries in the open arms of EPM. Moreover, these agents significantly increased the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital. In addition, the highest dose of extracts and verbascoside reduced time spent on the rod and total locomotion in the open field tests, respectively. Flumazenil inhibited the effects of extracts and verbascoside in EPM and hypnotic tests. Conclusion: These results suggested that ethanolic and aqueous extracts of L. citriodora and verbascoside exhibit anxiolytic, hypnotic and muscle relaxant effects especially at the highest doses and these effects are partially due to the interaction with GABAA receptor.
