Abstract

Chris Lippard's analysis of displacement and refusal in the Tunisian film, The Last of Us (Akher wahad fina), rearticulates the cinematic quest for an aesthetic means by which to express the refusal of migrant positionality. Taking a rhetorically performative approach, he suggests both the possibilities and pitfalls inherent in different forms of displacement, including disappearance and disassembly, as a means of refuting postcolonial categories and conceptions of migration. The film offers an opportunity for considering alternative aesthetics within the contemporary depiction of migration, and one for questioning the tropes of migration narratives in an imagined decolonized space where modernity and commoditization have not taken hold and an alternative migration journey is thus depicted: one that differently incorporates the experience of being other(ed) with which migration narratives have constantly to engage, though also one that, in its separation from national and transnational networks, risks a retreat into immanence. Abstract

The article examines the elements in the narrative of "The Singing Detective," a television series with script written by Dennis Potter. It features Philip Marlow, the protagonist who is admitted to a hospital due to a violent attack of psoriasis. It relates how the story about a singing detective created by Marlow while in the hospital is a consequence of his pain. It describes how the medical discourse facing Marlow failed to eradicate the sexual. It outlines the ambiguity enforced by the text which makes it difficult for viewers to decide which character is narrating in a particular episode.

26. Kurosawa's Rashomon Wins the Grand Prize at Venice.

Abstract

When Rashomon was entered in the 1951 Venice Film Festival (August 20-September 10) at the prompting of Italian producer Guilliana Stramigioli, who had seen and liked it upon release the previous year, nobody in the Japanese film industry expected the film to do well. After all, this was a peculiarly Japanese film set in the medieval Heian period, which seemed unlikely to be of interest to a Western audience. Certainly, its director, Akira Kurosawa, had not made Rashomon with an international audience in mind, but Venice loved it. The Venice prize was, at the time, the biggest honor in world cinema; its award to Rashomon hinted at the riches of an, until then, almost-unknown cinema and established the reputation of Kurosawa as its most internationally powerful practitioner.

Abstract

Under Michael Balcon, London’s Ealing Studios was known for promoting a cooperative, family-like atmosphere; on one of the studio’s walls was painted the slogan “the studio with the team spirit.” For this reason, Ealing received remarkable loyalty from its directors and writers, many of whom stayed until the studio disbanded. Although the studio’s principal personnel had various abilities and degrees of talent, it is possible to identify certain features that the studio’s famous comedies share. These films are not lavish spectacles but carefully crafted, wittily written satires on authority. They depict ordinary people attempting to break free from the numerous constraints of postwar British society and its rigid, conventional morality. In the films, the world is turned upside down and the government, industry, or class system challenged—but this is done gently, with a degree of respect for what is being derided.
