Abstract

International audience; The rivers of Guadeloupe and Martinique (French West Indies) show high levels of chlordecone (CLD) contamination. This persistent molecule has a dramatic impact on both aquatic ecosystems and human health. In these rivers, epilithic biofilms are the main endogenous primary producers and represent a central food source for fish and crustaceans. Recently, their viscoelastic properties have been shown to be effective in bio-assessing pollution in tropical environments. As these properties are closely related to the biochemical composition of the biofilms, biochemical (fatty acids, pigments, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) monosaccharides) and molecular markers (T-RFLP fingerprints of bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes) were investigated. Strong links between CLD pollution and both biofilm biochemistry and microbial community composition were found. In particular, high levels of CLD were linked with modified exo-polysaccharides corresponding to carbohydrates with enhanced adsorption and adhesion properties. The observed change probably resulted from a preferential interaction between CLD and sugars and/or a differential microbial secretion of EPS in response to the pollutant. These changes were expected to impact viscoelastic properties of epilithic biofilms highlighting the effect of CLD pollution on biofilm EPS matrix. They also suggested that microorganisms implement a CLD scavenging strategy, providing new insights on the role of EPS in the adaptation of microorganisms to CLD-polluted environments.

Abstract

Lipophilic pigments were examined in microbial mat communities dominated by cyanobacteria in the intertidal zone and by diatoms in the subtidal and sublittoral zones of Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Wastern Australia. These microbial mats have evolutionary significance because of their similarity to lithified stromatolites from the Proterozoic and Early, Paleozoic eras. Fucoxanthin, diatoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, β-carotene, and chlorophylls a and c characterized the diatom mats, whereas cyanobacterial mats contained myxoxauthophyll, zeaxanthin, echinenone, β-carotene, chlorophyll a and, in some case, sheath pigment. The presence of bacteriochlorophyll a within the mats suggests a close association of photosynthetic bacteria with diatoms and cyanobacteria. The high carotenoids: chlorophyll a ratios (0.84-2.44 wt/vt) in the diatom mats suggest that carotenoids served a photoprotective function in this high light environment. By contrast, cyanobacterial sheath pigment may have largely supplanted the photoprotective role of carotenoids in the intertidal mats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Impact of household cooking techniques on colour, antioxidant and sensory properties of African pumpkin and pumpkin leaves.

Abstract

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate household cooking techniques on the changes of colour properties, antioxidants and antioxidant activity (FRAP activity), as well as the sensory quality of African pumpkin and pumpkin leaves. Steaming reduced the colour difference (ΔE) in the leaves of African pumpkin and pumpkin compared to stir-frying, boiling or microwaving. Steaming led to a reduced loss of total chlorophyll content but increased the total carotenoid content by 22.65% in leaves of African pumpkin compared to the other three methods. Steaming reduced the loss of total phenolic content and retained the antioxidant activity in both African pumpkin and pumpkin leaves compared to the other methods, whilst stir-frying and steaming reduced the loss of total flavonoids in the leaves of African pumpkin and pumpkin, respectively. The sensory evaluation indicated that the stir-fried leaves of African pumpkin and pumpkins are preferred, whilst the steamed leaves are preferred secondly, compared to the boiled or microwaved leaves, which are least tasty. • Steaming reduced the loss of total chlorophyll content in African pumpkin leaves. • Steaming increased the total carotenoids in African pumpkin leaves than raw leaves. • Steaming reduced the loss of antioxidant activity in the leaves of African pumpkin and pumpkin. • Boiling and microwaving caused greater loss of the antioxidants and the antioxidant activity. • Steaming is the suitable cooking technique for African pumpkin and pumpkin leaves. Abstract

This review examines the recent high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) literature on the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on certain analytes in the medically important freshwater snail, Biomphalaria glabrata. The analytes studied were lipids, lipophilic pigments, amino acids, and carbohydrates. As determined by HPTLC, various factors, such as larval parasitism, estivation, temperature changes, and others, alter the metabolism of the snail and cause significant changes in the chemical contents of the analytes under study.
