We report PEDOT:PSS brushes grafted from gold using surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) which demonstrate significantly enhanced mechanical stability against sonication and electrochemical cycling compared to spincoated analogues as well as lower impedances than bare gold at frequencies from 0.1 to 105Hz. These results suggest SI-ATRP PEDOT:PSS to be a promising candidate for use in microelectrodes for neural activity recording. Spin-coated, electrodeposited, and drop-cast PEDOT:PSS have already been shown to reduce impedance and improve biocompatibility of microelectrodes, but the lack of strong chemical bonds of the physisorbed polymer film to the metal leads to disintegration under required operational stresses including cyclic mechanical loads, abrasion, and electrochemical cycling. Rather than modifying the metal electrode or introducing cross-linkers or other additives to improve the stability of the polymer film, this work chemically tethers the polymer to the surface, offering a simple, scalable solution for functional bioelectronic interfaces.

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

The conductive polyelectrolyte complex poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is ubiquitous in research dealing with organic electronic devices (e.g., solar cells, wearable and implantable sensors, and electrochemical transistors). In many bioelectronic applications, the applicability of commercially available formulations of PEDOT:PSS (e.g., Clevios) is limited by its poor mechanical properties. Additives can be used to increase the compliance but pose a risk of leaching, which can result in device failure and increased toxicity (in biological settings). Thus, to increase the mechanical compliance of PEDOT:PSS without additives, we synthesized a library of intrinsically stretchable block copolymers. In particular, controlled radical polymerization using a reversible addition-fragmentation transfer process was used to generate block copolymers consisting of a block of PSS (of fixed length) appended to varying blocks of poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) (PPEGMEA). These block copolymers (PSS(1)-b-PPEGMEA(x), where x ranges from 1 to 6) were used as scaffolds for oxidative polymerization of PEDOT. By increasing the lengths of the PPEGMEA segments on the PEDOT:[PSS(1)-b-PPEGMEA(1-6)] block copolymers, ("Block-1" to "Block-6"), or by blending these copolymers with PEDOT:PSS, the mechanical and electronic properties of the polymer can be tuned. Our results indicate that the polymer with the longest block of PPEGMEA, Block-6, had the highest fracture strain (75%) and lowest elastic modulus (9.7 MPa), though at the expense of conductivity (0.01 S cm-1). However, blending Block-6 with PEDOT:PSS to compensate for the insulating nature of the PPEGMEA resulted in increased conductivity [2.14 S cm-1 for Blend-6 (2:1)]. Finally, we showed that Block-6 outperforms a commercial formulation of PEDOT:PSS as a dry electrode for surface electromyography due to its favorable mechanical properties and better adhesion to skin.

Haptic actuators generate touch sensations and provide realism and depth in human-machine interactions. A new generation of soft haptic interfaces is desired to produce the distributed signals over large areas that are required to mimic natural touch interactions. One promising approach is to combine the advantages of organic actuator materials and additive printing technologies. This powerful combination can lead to devices that are ergonomic, readily customizable, and economical for researchers to explore potential benefits and create new haptic applications. Here, an overview of emerging organic actuator materials and digital printing technologies for fabricating haptic actuators is provided. In particular, the focus is on the challenges and potential solutions associated with integration of multi-material actuators, with an eye toward improving the fidelity and robustness of the printing process. Then the progress in achieving compact, lightweight haptic actuators by using an open-source extrusion printer to integrate different polymers and composites in freeform designs is reported. Two haptic interfaces-a tactile surface and a kinesthetic glove-are demonstrated to show that printing with organic materials is a versatile approach for rapid prototyping of various types of haptic devices.

Progress in the field of soft devices—that is, the types of haptic, robotic, and human-machine interfaces (HRHMIs) in which elastomers play a key role—has its basis in the science of polymeric materials and chemical synthesis. However, in examining the literature, it is found that most developments have been enabled by off-the-shelf materials used either alone or as components of physical blends and composites. A greater awareness of the methods of synthetic chemistry will accelerate the capabilities of HRHMIs. Conversely, an awareness of the applications sought by engineers working in this area may spark the development of new molecular designs and synthetic methodologies by chemists. Several applications of active, stimuli-responsive polymers, which have demonstrated or shown potential use in HRHMIs are highlighted. These materials share the fact that they are products of state-of-the-art synthetic techniques. The progress report is thus organized by the chemistry by which the materials are synthesized, including controlled radical polymerization, metal-mediated cross-coupling polymerization, ring-opening polymerization, various strategies for crosslinking, and hybrid approaches. These methods can afford polymers with multiple properties (i.e., conductivity, stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing, and degradable abilities, biocompatibility, adhesiveness, and mechanical robustness) that are of great interest to scientists and engineers concerned with soft devices for human interaction.

Haptic devices are in general more adept at mimicking the bulk properties of materials than they are at mimicking the surface properties. This paper describes a haptic glove capable of producing sensations reminiscent of three types of near-surface properties: hardness, temperature, and roughness. To accomplish this mixed mode of stimulation, three types of haptic actuators were combined: vibrotactile motors, thermoelectric devices, and electrotactile electrodes made from a stretchable conductive polymer synthesized in our laboratory. This polymer consisted of a stretchable polyanion which served as a scaffold for the polymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). The scaffold was synthesized using controlled radical polymerization to afford material of low dispersity, relatively high conductivity (0.1 S cm-1), and low impedance relative to metals. The glove was equipped with flex sensors to make it possible to control a robotic hand and a hand in virtual reality (VR). In psychophysical experiments, human participants were able to discern combinations of electrotactile, vibrotactile, and thermal stimulation in VR. Participants trained to associate these sensations with roughness, hardness, and temperature had an overall accuracy of 98%, while untrained participants had an accuracy of 85%. Sensations could similarly be conveyed using a robotic hand equipped with sensors for pressure and temperature.

In engineering, the "softness" of an object, as measured by an indenter, manifests as two measurable parameters: (i) indentation depth and (ii) contact area. For humans, softness is not well defined, although it is believed that perception depends on the same two parameters. Decoupling their relative contributions, however, has not been straightforward because most bulk-"off-the-shelf"-materials exhibit the same ratio between the indentation depth and contact area. Here, we decoupled indentation depth and contact area by fabricating elastomeric slabs with precise thicknesses and microstructured surfaces. Human subject experiments using two-alternative forced-choice and magnitude estimation tests showed that the indentation depth and contact area contributed independently to perceived softness. We found an explicit relationship between the perceived softness of an object and its geometric properties. Using this approach, it is possible to design objects for human interaction with a desired level of perceived softness.

There is a need to monitor patients with cancer of the head and neck postradiation therapy, as diminished swallowing activity can result in disuse atrophy and fibrosis of the swallowing muscles. This paper describes a flexible strain sensor comprising palladium nanoislands on single-layer graphene. These piezoresistive sensors were tested on 14 disease-free head and neck cancer patients with various levels of swallowing function: from nondysphagic to severely dysphagic. The patch-like devices detected differences in (1) the consistencies of food boluses when swallowed and (2) dysphagic and nondysphagic swallows. When surface electromyography (sEMG) is obtained simultaneously with strain data, it is also possible to differentiate swallowing vs nonswallowing events. The plots of resistance vs time are correlated to specific events recorded by video X-ray fluoroscopy. Finally, we developed a machine-learning algorithm to automate the identification of bolus type being swallowed by a healthy subject (86.4%. accuracy). The algorithm was also able to discriminate between swallows of the same bolus from either the healthy subject or a dysphagic patient (94.7% accuracy). Taken together, these results may lead to noninvasive and home-based systems for monitoring of swallowing function and improved quality of life.

We report the application of a nonvolatile ionic gel as a soft, conductive interface for electrotactile stimulation. Materials characterization reveals that, compared to a conventional ionic hydrogel, a glycerol-containing ionic gel does not dry out in air, has better adhesion to skin, and exhibits a similar impedance spectrum in the range of physiological frequencies. Moreover, psychophysical experiments reveal that the nonvolatile gel also exhibits a wider window of comfortable electrotactile stimulation. Finally, a simple pixelated device is fabricated to demonstrate spatial resolution of the haptic signal.

This communication describes a glove capable of wirelessly translating the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet into text displayable on a computer or smartphone. The key components of the device are strain sensors comprising a piezoresistive composite of carbon particles embedded in a fluoroelastomer. These sensors are integrated with a wearable electronic module consisting of digitizers, a microcontroller, and a Bluetooth radio. Finite-element analysis predicts a peak strain on the sensors of 5% when the knuckles are fully bent. Fatigue studies suggest that the sensors successfully detect the articulation of the knuckles even when bent to their maximal degree 1,000 times. In concert with an accelerometer and pressure sensors, the glove is able to translate all 26 letters of the ASL alphabet. Lastly, data taken from the glove are used to control a virtual hand; this application suggests new ways in which stretchable and wearable electronics can enable humans to interface with virtual environments. Critically, this system was constructed of components costing less than $100 and did not require chemical synthesis or access to a cleanroom. It can thus be used as a test bed for materials scientists to evaluate the performance of new materials and flexible and stretchable hybrid electronics.

In this work, a portable venturi tube capable of measuring bidirectional respiratory flow is developed and correlated the measurements to pulmonary function. Pressure signals are transduced using flexible and compressible capacitive foam sensors embedded into the wall of the device. In this configuration, the sensors are able to provide differential pressure readings, from which the airflow rate passing through the tube could be extrapolated. Utilizing the venturi effect, the geometry of the spirometer tube is designed through finite element analysis to measure respiratory airflow during inhalation and exhalation. The device tube is 3D‐printed and used to measure tidal breathing and deep breathing, along with peak expiratory flow rates, on a healthy individual. This spirometer design allows for easy‐to‐use point‐of‐care diagnoses and has the potential to improve the care of respiratory illnesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crosslinking is a ubiquitous strategy in polymer engineering to increase the thermomechanical robustness of solid polymers but has been relatively unexplored in the context of p-conjugated (semiconducting) polymers. Notwithstanding, mechanical stability is key to many envisioned applications of organic electronic devices. For example, the wide-scale distribution of photovoltaic devices incorporating conjugated polymers may depend on integration with substrates subject to mechanical insult--for example, road surfaces, flooring tiles, and vehicle paint. Here, a four-armed azide-based crosslinker ("4Bx") is used to modify the mechanical properties of a library of semiconducting polymers. Three polymers used in bulk heterojunction solar cells (donors J51 and PTB7-Th, and acceptor N2200) are selected for detailed investigation. In doing so, it is shown that low loadings of 4Bx can be used to increase the strength (up to 30%), toughness (up to 75%), hardness (up to 25%), and cohesion of crosslinked films. Likewise, crosslinked films show greater physical stability in comparison to non-crosslinked counterparts (20% vs 90% volume lost after sonication). Finally, the locked-in morphologies and increased mechanical robustness enable crosslinked solar cells to have greater survivability to four degradation tests: abrasion (using a sponge), direct exposure to chloroform, thermal aging, and accelerated degradation (heat, moisture, and oxygen).
