Ecosystem health (EH) maintenance and improvement are important goals in environmental and ecological management, and help realize regional sustainable development goals. EH assessment and the regulatory mechanism have remained popular research fields in landscape ecology science. However, the improvement in EH assessment methods is ongoing, the influences of EH and socioeconomic development on agricultural production remain unclear. In this study, we chose Fujian Province in China as the study area, first quantitatively assess EH based on the Vigor–Organization–Resilience–Services (VORS) model, and thereafter explore the response of tea production to EH and socioeconomic development using the structural equation model (SEM). We found that the mean EH value in Fujian Province was 0.52 in 2010, which was 6.12% and 10.64% higher than that in 2000 and 2020, respectively. The high-EH-value regions were distributed in the northwest, while the southeastern regions exhibited low-EH-value agglomerations. According to the temporal evolution characteristics of EH, the kernel density curve patterns exhibited single peaks, and the curves shifted from a broad to a narrow peak from 2000 to 2020, indicating a trend toward a more balanced distribution of EH spatially. SEM results showed a significant positive effect of EH on tea production with a coefficient of 0.86. However, there is a significant trade-off between EH and economic development, as indicated by a coefficient of −0.6. There are also negative indirect effects on tea development when mediated by economic development. However, the overall effect of EH on tea production is 0.8, indicating that EH is still effective in promoting tea production. The results of this study have implications for the integration of ecosystem management and agricultural production management in the region.

Paraneoplastic thrombocytosis is common in ovarian cancer and often correlates with disease recurrence. This study aimed to assess the impact of probiotics on platelet counts in ovarian cancer patients. Enrolled patients with paraneoplastic thrombocytosis received oral Bifidobacterium longum JBLC-141 for platelet level modulation. Over a 12-month period, patients were closely monitored for recurrence rates. The study revealed significant differences between the oral probiotic and placebo groups in various parameters, including platelet counts, coagulation functions, inflammatory factors, tumor markers, and gut microbiota composition. However, no significant distinctions were observed during postoperative stabilization. Oral probiotics effectively mitigated platelet count surges and improved coagulation functions in ovarian cancer patients with paraneoplastic thrombocytosis. Positive effects on inflammation, tumor marker levels, and gut microbiota composition were also noted. Further clinical validation is needed to confirm probiotics’ potential in extending the postoperative stabilization period.

Abstract Earth pressure shields are widely used in tunnel construction due to their low environmental impact and mechanized operations. However, ensuring the stability of the excavation surface during the construction process is crucial. Any instability in the excavation surface can lead to soil destruction, such as body collapse or surface uplift. Additionally, the tunneling process can cause deformation disturbances to nearby buildings. In the case of Beijing Metro Line 17, detailed survey data and construction monitoring data were collected through field surveys and tests. The study combined theoretical analysis and numerical simulations to investigate the impact of shield tunneling in clay layers on neighboring buildings. The focus was on analyzing the physical deformation and the response law of influencing factors, such as stratum parameters and engineering effects on surface settlement, building inclination, and distortion. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis of the deformation impact was conducted, and corresponding measures for deformation control were proposed.

Abstract Given the escalating prevalence of electromagnetic pollution, there is an urgent need for the development of high‐performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. Herein, wood‐based electromagnetic shielding materials have gained significant popularity due to their exceptional performance as building materials. In this study, a novel wood‐based composite with electromagnetic shielding properties is developed. Through the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) crystals on wood fibers, coupled with uniform integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a multifunctional composite named ZIF‐8/Poplar‐CNT composite is synthesized via a one‐step thermoforming process. The incorporation of CNTs endows the composites with excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). Among these elements, despite ZIF‐8 crystals not possessing intrinsic electromagnetic shielding functionality, their distinctive dodecahedral structure proves adept at scattering and reflecting electromagnetic waves within the composites, further improving the electromagnetic shielding effect. Hence, the ZIF‐8/Poplar‐CNT composite (56.95 dB) has ≈10 dB higher EMI SE compared to that of the composites without ZIF‐8 crystals. Meanwhile, ZIF‐8 crystals endow the materials with excellent tensile strength (54.84 MPa, enhanced by 4 times). Moreover, the introduction of Zn2+ provides superior antibacterial properties. The potential applications of ZIF‐8/Poplar‐CNT composites extend to diverse areas such as building decoration, electronic products, and medical equipment.

Severe pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. This retrospective study explored pregnancy outcome predictive values of umbilical artery Doppler with serum adiponectin in severe pre-eclampsia. Fasting elbow venous blood was collected from 118 severe pre-eclampsia patients [maternal systolic pressure ≥ 160 mmHg and/or diastolic pressure ≥ 110 mmHg + minimal proteinuria, 56; mild hypertension + heavy proteinuria (≥2 g/24 h or random urinary protein ≥ 2+), 42; no proteinuria but new-onset hypertension + diseases of heart/lung/liver/kidney/other organs or abnormalities in blood/digestive/nervous systems, placental foetus involved, 20] and 90 controls (18.5-24.9 kg/m2) in the first morning of admission. Serum adiponectin and resistance/pulsatility indexes were separately measured and correlatively analysed by Pearson’s coefficient analysis. Adverse outcomes included maternal primary postpartum haemorrhage and placental abruption, neonatal asphyxia, low birth weight, foetal distress, foetal growth restriction. In severe pre-eclampsia, serum adiponectin (downregulated) was negatively-correlated with resistance/pulsatility indexes (upregulated). The area under the curve of umbilical artery Doppler with serum adiponectin for predicting adverse outcomes of severe pre-eclampsia was 0.6545 (specificity 60.27%, sensitivity 60.00%). In conclusion, umbilical artery Doppler with serum adiponectin predicts adverse pregnancy outcomes in severe pre-eclampsia.Impact statement What is already known on this subject? Sad levels were lowered in sPE patients. UA ultrasound hemodynamic parameters can predict adverse pregnancy outcomes. What do the results of this study add? Our study revealed that ultrasonic hemodynamic indexes of UA combined with Sad levels had better efficacy in predicting pregnancy outcomes in patients with sPE, and our study is expected to improve the accuracy of clinical prediction of adverse outcomes in sPE patients. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Through the combined detection of multiple indicators of the foetus in the mother, our study expects to be able to monitor and predict the growth of the foetus in the mother more accurately in clinical practice, avoid excessive intervention or untimely intervention, and reduce the incidence of perinatal adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract Fecal samples from participants aged 60–80 were collected and sequenced by a high-throughput second-generation sequencer to explore the structural composition of gut microbiota in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Comparison of gut microbiota between patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and healthy controls, α diversity and β diversity were statistically different. At the genus level, compared with the normal group, the abundance of A Blautia , Fusicatenibacter , Anaerostipes, Lachnospiraceae_ND3007_group, CAG-56, Eggerthella, Lachnospiraceae_FCS020_group and Olsenella were decreased significantly in the LC group. In contrast, the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella, Fusobacterium, Megasphaera , Veillonella, Tyzzerella_4, Prevotella_2 and Cronobacter increased significantly. The KEGG and COG pathway analyses showed that the dysbiosis of gut bacteria in primary liver carcinoma is associated with several pathways, including amino acid metabolism, replication and repair, nucleotide metabolism, cell motility, cell growth and death, and transcription. Background: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) exhibits anti-tumor capabilities. This study explored the anti-tumor activity of Naringin in ovarian cancer and the signaling mechanism. Methods: The current investigation comprised the administration of various concentrations of Naringin, paclitaxel, and cisplatin to SKOV3 cells. Following the therapy, the protein expression levels for (TGF-β) and its downstream (Snail1)/(SMAD2) were measured in SKOV3 cells. Finally, small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting TGF-β was synthesized, and the recombinant plasmid vector overexpressing TGF-β was constructed to detect the mRNA and protein expression of Snail1/SMAD2. The results were verified in animal models. Results: In this study, the expression of TGF-β varied significantly with varying Naringin concentrations. The expression of the downstream Snail1/SMAD2 was also affected. With increasing Naringin concentration, the expression of Snail1/SMAD2 decreased gradually in cells. Moreover, overexpressing TGF-β increased the expression of Snail1/SMAD2 and vice versa. In addition, Naringin further decreased the expression of Snail1/SMAD2 produced by transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). Consistent outcomes were achieved when TGF-β agonists and inhibitors were employed alongside the inclusion of Naringin in animal models. Conclusions: The results of the present study demonstrated that Naringin suppressed the proliferation of ovarian cancer cells in a manner that depended on the dosage and also triggered programmed cell death (apoptosis) in ovarian cancer cells by activating the TGF-β mediated signaling pathway.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP), a vital region for terrestrial ecosystem services and biodiversity, is facing severe grassland degradation influenced by multiple factors. However, it remains unclear how several influential factors interactively influence grassland degradation. Here, we used five land cover products and six vegetation indexes to quantify grassland degradation on the TP. We then applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to quantitatively assess multiple factors and interactions affecting grassland degradation. We found that grassland degradation on the TP was mainly concentrated in the central and southern regions which were under high pressure from human activities, with the area of 325,430 km2, accounting for about 12.63% of the total grassland area on the TP during 2000–2020. The factors such as overgrazing, climate change, and human activities have contributed to the grassland degradation on the TP. Abstract Particle gluing operating parameters in particleboard (PB) production have an important influence on the mechanical properties of PBs. This study developed a multi-objective optimization model based on support vector regression (SVR) optimized by the non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm-II (NSGA2) to realize the multi-objective accurate prediction of PB mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and internal bonding (IB) strength) by adjusting particle gluing operating parameters. The NSGA2-SVR multi-objective prediction model was trained by 496 groups of experimental data of particle gluing operating parameters and PB mechanical properties. The prediction results of the NSGA2-SVR multi-objective prediction model were evaluated by 124 groups of experimental data and compared with the prediction results of the back propagation neural network (BPNN) model, general regression neural network (GRNN) model, and SVR model. The mean absolute percentage errors (MAPEs) of the NSGA2-SVR model were 49.11%, 33.64%, and 24.20% lower than that of the BPNN model, GRNN model, and SVR model, respectively. The Theil’s inequality coefficients (TICs) of the NSGA2-SVR model were 40.93%, 27.39%, and 18.58% lower than that of the BPNN model, GRNN model, and SVR model, respectively. The results showed that the multi-objective prediction model based on NSGA2-SVR has a superior fitting and higher prediction accuracy for the prediction performance of particle gluing operating parameters, and the NSGA2-SVR model can be applied to the multi-objective synchronous prediction of particle gluing operating parameters in the PB production line.

Tribological and electrochemical corrosion behaviors of copper matrix composites (CMCs) reinforced by the in-situ tungsten carbide with different morphology were investigated in the present work. Compared to the granular and lumpy tungsten carbide, the mesh-structured WC has been found to be more beneficial the wear resistance of CMCs, due in main to its hindrance effect on spalling of copper matrix during friction processes. The hindrance effect is responsible for a 56.0% reduction in the wear rate of CMCs reinforced by mesh-structured WC than those by granular and lumpy WC. Such novel findings provide a method to improve the wear resistance of CMCs, though the mesh-structured WC is easier to induce their electrochemical corrosion. Additionally, the effect mechanism of WC morphology on the materials wear and corrosion behaviors was discussed on the basis of experimental results.

Abstract The particleboard (PB) production is an extremely complex process, many operating parameters affecting panel quality. It is a big challenge to optimize the PB production parameters. The production parameters of particle gluing have an important influence on the internal bond (IB) strength of PB. In this study, using grey relation analysis (GRA) and support vector regression (SVR) algorithm, a prediction model was developed to accurately predict IB of PB through particle gluing processing parameters in a PB production line. GRA was used to analyze the grey relational grade between the particle gluing processing parameters and IB of PB, and the variables were screened. The SVR algorithm was used to train 724 groups of particle gluing sample data between six particle gluing processing parameters and IB. The SVR model was tested with 181 sets of experimental data. The SVR model was verified by 181 sets of experimental data, and the values of mean absolute error (MAE), mean relative error (MRE), root mean square error (RMSE), and Theil’s inequality coefficient (TIC) of the model were 0.008, 0.017, 0.013, and 0.014, respectively. The results showed that the prediction performance of the nonlinear regression prediction model based on GRA–SVR is superior, and the GRA–SVR prediction model can be used to real-time predict the IB in the PB production line.

Background and Objectives: Fungi degrade lignin and other fibers, thus playing an essential role in the decomposition of Phyllostachys edulis (Carrière) J.Houz. (Moso bamboo) stumps. Herein, we characterized key soil fungal communities near different levels of decomposing Moso bamboo stumps (mildly, moderately, and heavily decayed). Materials and Methods: High-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze the soil fungal communities inside and outside of mild, moderate, and heavy decomposing Moso bamboo stumps. Results: We found nine phyla, 30 classes, 77 orders, 149 families, and 247 genera of soil fungi near the bamboo stumps. Soil fungi OTUs and diversity and richness indices were lower outside than inside the stumps, and decreased with increasing degrees of decay. Inside the bamboo stumps, Soil fungi OTUs and diversity and richness indices were the highest and lowest in moderate and heavy decay bamboo stumps, respectively. Ascomycota dominated inside (from 81% to 46%) and outside (from 69% to 49%) the stumps, and their relative abundance gradually decreased with decomposition, whereas that of Basidiomycota increased outside the stumps (from 17% to 49%). Two-way ANOVA showed that the interaction between the two factors of occurring inside and outside the bamboo stumps and the degree of decay, significantly affected Chytridiomycota and Penicillium (p < 0.001) and significantly affected Mucoromycota (p < 0.05). The abundance of different genera was significantly correlated with saprotrophic functional groups. Conclusion: Changes in the structure and functional groups of soil fungal communities may play an important role during different levels of decomposition of Moso bamboo stumps. This study provides a scientific basis for screening functional fungal strains that promote the decomposition of Moso bamboo stumps.

Land cover (LC) and LC change information are essential data in terrestrial surface research. However, the LC products are highly inconsistent, especially in the mountainous area. Most LC assessment studies focused on the consistency of spatial patterns, while ignoring the consistency of change and elevation heterogeneity. In this article, four LC products were assessed for spatiotemporal consistency on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), including the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer LC (MCD12Q1), the climate change initiative LC (CCI-LC), the 30-meter global land cover (Globeland30) and the multiperiod land use/ LC remote sensing monitoring database in China. The impact of elevation on the consistency of multiple LC products across spatiotemporal scales was further analyzed. The spatial consistency of the three and more products was about 70%, with higher consistency for grassland and bare land and lower consistency for wetland and shrubland on the TP. Globeland30 and CCI-LC were better than others for overall monitoring, with the inconsistency of less than 45% by Google Earth dataset validation. The temporal change consistency of the four LC products was less than 10%. With increasing elevation, the average spatial consistency decreased and the LC change area and temporal change consistency increased. There is a high inconsistency of LC changes on the TP in existing commonly used products, demonstrating the need to develop high-quality LC products in long time series.

The growth of trees is inseparable from the water transpiration in the xylem. To explore the mechanism of sap rising in the xylem, the monthly variation of the dynamic viscosity and interfacial tension of the xylem sap of different tree species and their impacting factors were analyzed. In this experiment, the dynamic viscosity and interfacial tension of the xylem sap of poplar and metasequoia were measured within one year, as well as the sap velocity of poplar. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy were used to detect the organic components and inorganic cations of the xylem sap of poplar and metasequoia. By analyzing the influence of organic components and the inorganic cation concentration of xylem sap on the dynamic viscosity and interfacial tension of xylem sap, this study revealed that the dynamic viscosity and the interfacial tension of poplar and metasequoia samples in different months changed in basically the same manner. However, the dynamic viscosity and the interfacial tension of the metasequoia samples were generally higher than those of the poplar samples. The dynamic viscosity of the xylem sap had an obvious exponential relationship with temperature, while the interfacial tension of the xylem sap had an inconspicuous linear relationship with temperature. In addition, disparate xylem structures of the broad-leaved tree poplar and the coniferous tree metasequoia led to different concentrations of organic components and inorganic cations in their xylem sap, which made a difference in the dynamic viscosity and interfacial tension between poplar and metasequoia samples.

The gut microbiota has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Recent studies suggest that the gut microbiota is also closely associated with bone metabolism. However, given the high diversity of the gut microbiota, the effects of different taxa and compositions on bone are poorly understood. Previous studies demonstrated that the mechanisms underlying the effects of the gut microbiota on bone mainly include its modulation of nutrient absorption, intestinal permeability, metabolites (such as short-chain amino acids), immune responses, and hormones or neurotransmitters (such as 5-hydroxytryptamine). Several studies found that external interventions, such as dietary changes, improved bone health and altered the composition of the gut microbiota. This review summarises the beneficial gut bacteria and explores how dietary, natural, and physical factors alter the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota to improve bone health, thereby providing potential new insight into the prevention of osteoporosis.

Modeling is regarded as a suitable tool to improve biomass pyrolysis in terms of efficiency, product yield, and controllability. However, it is crucial to develop advanced models to estimate products' yield and composition as functions of biomass type/characteristics and process conditions. Despite many developed models, most of them suffer from insufficient validation due to the complexity in determining the chemical compounds and their quantity. To this end, the present paper reviewed the modeling and verification of products derived from biomass pyrolysis. Besides, the possible solutions towards more accurate modeling of biomass pyrolysis were discussed. First of all, the paper commenced reviewing current models and validating methods of biomass pyrolysis. Afterward, the influences of biomass characteristics, particle size, and heat transfer on biomass pyrolysis, particle motion, reaction kinetics, product prediction, experimental validation, current gas sensors, and potential applications were reviewed and discussed comprehensively. There are some difficulties with using current pyrolysis gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) for modeling and validation purposes due to its bulkiness, fragility, slow detection, and high cost. On account of this, the applications of Py-GC/MS in industries are limited, particularly for online product yield and composition measurements. In the final stage, a recommendation was provided to utilize high-temperature sensors with high potentials to precisely validate the models for product yield and composition (especially CO, CO2, and H2) during biomass pyrolysis.

Abstract Background Under natural conditions, soil nutrients are heterogeneously distributed, and plants have developed adaptation strategies to efficiently forage patchily distributed nutrient. Most previous studies examined either patch strength or patch size separately and focused mainly on root morphological plasticity (increased root proliferation in nutrient-rich patch), thus the effects of both patch strength and size on morphological and physiological plasticity are not well understood. In this study, we examined the foraging strategy of Neyraudia reynaudiana (Kunth) Keng ex Hithc, a pioneer grass colonizing degraded sites, with respect to patch strength and size in heterogeneously distributed phosphorus (P), and how foraging patchily distributed P affects total plant biomass production. Plants were grown in sand-culture pots divided into ½, ¼, 1/6 compartments and full size and supplied with 0 + 0/30, 0 + 7.5/30 and 7.5 + 0/30 mg P/kg dry soil as KH2PO4 or 0 + 15/15, 0 + 18.5/ 18.5, 7.5 + 15/15 mg kg − 1 in the homogenous treatment. Abstract Wood densification can improve the strength of low density wood species and extend wood product applications. To enhance the wood compressive quality, chemical pretreatments for pristine wood have widely been used. Densified Abies wood was fabricated by combining NaOH/Na2SO3 solution treatment, hot-pressing and post mechanical fixation. The appearance, color, chemical composition, and physiology and mechanical properties before and after the densification treatment were examined by the colorimeter, FTIR and mechanical testing machine, respectively. Surface color of Abies wood was changed obviously after the densification. The values of brightness L* and b* decreased but the value of a* showed a slight increase in the densified wood. FTIR results confirmed that the color changes can be explained by the degradation of hemicellulose and lignin in wood cell walls and migration of extractives during the densification process. Sufficient removal of wood polymers resulted in the average compression ratio of about 80% in the radial direction of the natural wood. The density of densified wood increased with the wood thickness up to 1.227 g cm−1, accounting for a 169% increase compared to that of the pristine wood. Modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) in the thickness direction of densified wood also markedly enhanced. Degradation of polymers in wood cell walls also was reconfirmed by the difference of fracture interface. All the results suggested that the densified softwood can be easily fabricated using the proposed method and the new densified softwood can be appropriately used as interior decoration materials.

Although numerous land cover datasets can act as references for understanding land cover change in China, the inconsistencies between the datasets can also provide understanding. Previous studies on the consistency between land cover datasets have mostly focused on land cover type consistencies and have ignored data consistencies in land cover change. Therefore, we aim to analyse the consistencies in land cover changes through likelihood assessment methods. We compared the spatiotemporal changes in forest, grassland, cropland, and bare land in the Climate Change Initiative land cover dataset (CCI-LC), Moderate-resolution Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer land cover dataset (MCD12Q1), China’s National Land Use and Cover Change (CNLUCC), Globeland30 and Global Land Cover Fine Surface Covering 30 (GLC-FCS30) datasets in 2010. The results showed that the percentages and changes in each land cover type in MCD12Q1 were different from those in the other datasets. For example, the proportion of grassland in MCD12Q1 was the highest, reaching 48.04%. The places with high consistency were the places where the land cover types were concentrated, and the bare land had the highest consistency. However, the consistency of China’s land cover change was quite low, and the percentage of low consistency was more than 87% from 2000-2018. Comparison of the data with the global artificial impervious area (GAIA) and Hansen-Global Forest Change (Hansen-GFC) datasets showed that the percentage of high construction gain consistency (38.83%) was higher than the forest change consistency, and the percentage forest loss high consistency (8.85%) was lower than the forest gain high consistency (12.76%). The results not only provide a basis for the use of land cover datasets but also give a clearer understanding of the pattern of land cover changes.

Soy protein isolate (SPI) is an attractive natural material for preparing wood adhesives that has found broad application. However, poor mechanical properties and unfavorable water resistance of wood composites with SPI adhesive bonds limit its more extensive utilization. The combination of lysine (Lys) with a small molecular structure as a curing agent for modified soy-based wood adhesive allows Lys to penetrate wood pores easily and can result in better mechanical strength of soy protein-based composites, leading to the formation of strong chemical bonds between the amino acid and wood interface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the degree of penetration of the S/G/L-9% adhesive into the wood was significantly increased, the voids, such as ducts of wood at the bonding interface, were filled, and the interfacial bonding ability of the plywood was enhanced. Compared with the pure SPI adhesive, the corresponding wood breakage rate was boosted to 84%. The wet shear strength of the modified SPI adhesive was 0.64 MPa. When Lys and glycerol epoxy resin (GER) were added, the wet shear strength of plywood prepared by the S/G/L-9% adhesive reached 1.22 MPa, which increased by 29.8% compared with only GER (0.94 MPa). Furthermore, the resultant SPI adhesive displayed excellent thermostability. Water resistance of S/G/L-9% adhesive was further enhanced with respect to pure SPI and S/GER adhesives through curing with 9% Lys. In addition, this work provides a new and feasible strategy for the development and application of manufacturing low-cost, and renewable biobased adhesives with excellent mechanical properties, a promising alternative to traditional formaldehyde-free adhesives in the wood industry.

Grassland is one of the most widely distributed ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) accounting for about 60% of the total area. The grassland degradation has spread throughout the TP, and the scope and degree are increasing. The inconsistency of multi-source data poses a great challenge to accurately obtaining information about grassland degradation on the TP. This study used five land cover products and six vegetation indexes to analyze the spatial-temporal change in grassland area and quality at the pixel level across the TP from 2000 to 2020. Then, 279 observed grassland degradation points that were collected from 86 published papers were used to verify the grassland degradation information. The grassland fusion product demonstrated that the grassland area increased by 8.84% from 2000 to 2020, and the rate of grassland degradation exceeded the rate of grassland greening during 2010–2020. The superimposed six vegetation indexes showed that 25.88% of the grassland quality has been degraded on the TP from 2000 to 2020. In Changdu City, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Rikaze City, Shannan City and Nagqu City, the grassland quality degraded by more than in 20% and the degraded grassland area exceeded 2000 km2. The observed grassland degradation points were mainly distributed in the northeastern and central parts of the TP. The consistency of six vegetation indexes with the observed grassland degradation points on the TP was 56.63%, with solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) being more effective than other vegetation indexes for monitoring grassland degradation on the TP. In general, the degradation of grassland on the TP has been a looming problem in recent decades.

Phosphorus (P) is among the most intractable constraints on plant fertility, particularly in acidic soils with high P fixation capacities. The effects of nutrient limitation and the adaptive strategies of plants in infertile soils are central topics in plant ecology. The development of tree cultivars with greater P use efficiency (PUE), defined as the ability of a tree to grow and be productive in soils with reduced P availability, would substantially improve forest development. The ability of plants to redistribute and transfer P across fractions determines their adaptability to P limitations. However, the mechanisms of P utilization and transport remain unknown in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) from the perspective of P fraction distribution. In this study, we investigated the distribution and translocation patterns of exogenous P and different P fractions in the M1 Chinese fir, which was identified as exhibiting high P-deficient resistance ability and maintaining higher yield under low P stress relative to the average clones, using 32P tracking, which can accurately trace the migration pathways of exogenous P after plant absorption. We found that exogenous P in the roots was higher than in the stems or leaves under low-P conditions in which the amount of the exogenous P absorbed by M1 was significantly reduced. Under low-P conditions, the plants optimized P allocation, which led to higher PUE than under high-P conditions, with the highest PUE in the leaves, followed by the stems and roots. The M1 clone maintained a high ratio of soluble P (i.e., inorganic P and ester P) in its leaves and stems, which improved P mobility and recycling under the conditions of limited P. In the roots, the P fractions shifted from soluble inorganic P and ester P to insoluble P (i.e., nucleic P), but the total P concentration was relatively stable, which may ensure root growth and exogenous P absorption under the conditions of limited P. Our results confirm that the M1 Chinese fir reduces P demand, optimizes the allocation of P among P fractions, and increases PUE to maintain aboveground productivity in response to limited P conditions.

Improving meat quality has become the main goal of modern pig breeding. Intramuscular fat content (IMF) is an important trait influencing meat quality of livestock, but the molecular mechanism behind this trait is still unclear. Recently, Cho et al. reported the discovery of the first causal mutation affecting IMF and red flesh color (a*) in pigs, namely XM_013981330.2:g.−1805_−1810del, a 6-bp deletion variant in the porcine MYH3 promoter region. The objective of this study was to reassess the causality of this mutation for its potential commercial application. By Sanger sequencing, we firstly identified several new variants (including a 4-bp deletion) at or near the 6-bp deletion site, which formed four haplotypes in multiple breeds. Unexpectedly, the 6-bp deletion allele, previously determined as the MYH3 Q allele because of its significantly positive effect on IMF and a*, was found not only in Chinese indigenous breeds, but also in four western commercial breeds with relatively lower IMF levels, including Duroc, Large White, Landrace and Pietrain. More surprisingly, we found that the MYH3 Q allele and the haplotypes harboring it had no significant effects on IMF, marbling and color score in three large-scale divergent pig populations: the heterogeneous F6 and F7 pigs and commercial crossbred Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire) pigs. Transient transfection analysis in porcine satellite cells showed that the 6-bp deletion variants had a negligible effect on transcription of reporter gene, but could attenuate the MRF (myogenesis regulatory factors)-induced increase in luciferase activity of the MYH3 promoter vector. The MYH3 protein level in muscle did not differ significantly among the haplotype groups. Therefore, our results cannot support the causal relationship between the 6-bp deletion in MYH3 and IMF trait, suggesting that the causal mutation for the IMF QTL on SSC12 needs to be further identified.

Multilayered materials are widely studied due to their special structures and great properties, such as their mechanical ones. In this paper a novel and effective technique, a quadruple-layering approach, was used to fabricate multilayered materials. This approach increases the number of layers rapidly via simple operations. Materials with 4, 16, and 64 layers with alternating layers of polypropylene and nanocomposites were fabricated using this approach, and their film morphology and mechanical properties were studied. The influence of the number of layers on the mechanical properties of the materials and the relationship between the mechanical properties of each material were investigated. The results illustrated that the tensile modulus and strength were enhanced and elongation at the break increased when the layer numbers of the multilayered materials increased. However, this approach has a defect in that as the layer number increases, the layer thickness was not uniform, thus restricting the improvement of properties. This may need to be further studied in future work.

Abstract Aberrant expression of ARE-binding proteins (ARE-BPs) plays an important role in several diseases, including cancer. Both tristetraprolin (TTP) and human antigen R (HuR) are important ARE-BPs and always play opposite roles in regulating target mRNAs. Our previous work has demonstrated that TTP expression is decreased in gastric cancer (GC). In this study, we reported that HuR was elevated in GC cell lines and gastric cancer patients and that decreased TTP expression partly contributed to the elevated HuR levels by regulating its mRNA turnover. We also observed that dysregulation of TTP and HuR elevated the high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) expression in different ways. HuR promoted HMGB1 expression at translational level, while TTP regulated HMGB1 mRNA turnover by destabilizing its mRNA. Increased HuR promoted cancer cell proliferation and the metastasis potential partly by HMGB1. Using immunohistochemistry, we observed that both positive cytoplasmic and high-expression of nuclear HuR were associated with poor pathologic features and survival of GC patients. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that dysregulation of the TTP and HuR plays an important role in GC. Moreover, high HuR nuclear expression or aberrant cytoplasmic distribution may serve as a predictor of poor survival.

Self-bonded natural fiber material (SNFM) is a promising alternative for plastic and wood owing to its abundant raw material resources and low environmental impact. In this study, a high-performance SNFM was developed by the comprehensive treatments for the plasticity and structure of fiber cell walls. The cell wall structure was treated by a progressive chemical etching process for selectively removing surface lignin, internal lignin and hemicelluloses, respectively. The cell wall plasticity was tuned by controlling the fiber moisture content during compression molding process. The results showed that the increase in fiber plasticity improved the tensile strength from 38.0 to 83.5 MPa and the flexural strength from 31.2 to 73.3 MPa. The selective removal of surface lignin increased the flexural strength from 101.3 to 122.1 MPa. The functional relationships among mechanical strength, lignin content, hemicellulose content and moisture content were established. The self-bonded mechanism for natural fiber materials was also discussed. The SNFM products showed excellent mechanical performance (tensile strength: 21.5–83.5 MPa; flexural strength: 31.2–127.3 MPa), which was superior to that of natural wood (46.5–55.6 MPa; 70.7–92.4 MPa) and plastic (15.9–51.0 MPa; 21.7–73.0 MPa) (e.g., HDPE, PP, PVC, and ABS). Recently, land cover change detection has become a research focus of remote sensing. To obtain the change information from remote sensing images at fine spatial and temporal resolutions, subpixel change detection is widely studied and applied. In this paper, a new subpixel change detection method based on radial basis function (RBF) for remote sensing images is proposed, in which the abundance image difference measure (AIDM) is designed and utilized to enhance the subpixel mapping (SPM) by borrowing the fine spatial distribution of the fine spatial resolution image to decrease the influence of the spectral unmixing error. First, the fine and coarse spatial resolution images are used to develop subpixel change detection. Second, linear spectral mixing modeling and the degradation procedure are conducted on the coarse and fine spatial resolution image to produce two temporal abundance images, respectively. Then, the designed AIDM is utilized to enhance the RBF-based SPM by comparing the two temporal abundance images. At last, the proposed RBF-AIDM method is applied for SPM and subpixel change detection. The synthetic images based on Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and real case images based on two temporal Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) images and one Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image are undertaken to validate the proposed method. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can sufficiently decrease the influence of the spectral unmixing error and improve the subpixel change detection results.

Unsupervised change detection(CD) from remotely sensed images is a fundamental challenge when the ground truth for supervised learning is not easily available. Inspired by the visual attention mechanism and multi-level sensation capacity of human vision, we proposed a novel multi-scale analysis framework based on multi-scale visual saliency coarse-to-fine fusion (MVSF) for unsupervised CD in this paper. As a preface of MVSF, we generalized the connotations of scale as four classes in the field of remote sensing (RS) covering the RS process from imaging to image processing, including intrinsic scale, observation scale, analysis scale and modeling scale. In MVSF, superpixels were considered as the primitives for analysing the difference image(DI) obtained by the change vector analysis method. Then, multi-scale saliency maps at the superpixel level were generated according to the global contrast of each superpixel. Finally, a weighted fusion strategy was designed to incorporate multi-scale saliency at a pixel level. The fusion weight for the pixel at each scale is adaptively obtained by considering the heterogeneity of the superpixel it belongs to and the spectral distance between the pixel and the superpixel. The experimental study was conducted on three bi-temporal remotely sensed image pairs, and the effectiveness of the proposed MVSF was verified qualitatively and quantitatively. The results suggest that it is not entirely true that finer scale brings better CD result, and fusing multi-scale superpixel based saliency at a pixel level obtained a higher F1 score in the three experiments. MVSF is capable of maintaining the detailed changed areas while resisting image noise in the final change map. Analysis of the scale factors in MVSF implied that the performance of MVSF is not sensitive to the manually selected scales in the MVSF framework.

New types of remote sensed land cover datasets provide key evidence for understanding global environmental change. However, low data consistency makes understanding the changes unclear. China has become a hot spot of land cover change in the world due to climate change and a series of human measures, such as ecological engineering, land consolidation, and urbanization. However, due to the inconsistencies in interpretation of signs and thresholds, the understanding of yearly-continued land cover changes in China is still unclear. We aim to produce China’s land cover fraction dataset from 2001 to 2015 by weighted consistency analysis. We compare the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer land cover dataset (MCD12Q1), the Climate Change Initiative Land Cover (CCI-LC) datasets, and a new land cover fraction dataset named China-LCFMCD-CCI, produced with a 1 km resolution. The obvious increased forest areas only accounted for 4.6% of the total forest areas, and were mainly distributed in northeast China. Approximately 75.8% of the grassland and shrubland areas decreased in size, and these areas were relatively concentrated in northeast and south China. The obvious increased areas of cropland (3.7%) were equal to the obvious decreased areas (3.6%), and the increased cropland areas were in northwest China. The change in bare land was not obvious, as the obvious increased areas only accounted for 0.75% of the bare land areas. The results not only prove that the data fusion of the weighted consistency method is feasible to form a land cover fraction dataset, but also helps to fully reveal the trends in land cover fraction change in China.

To help protect the environment and reduce energy consumption in the wood industry, air-drying has been used to pre-dry lumber to about 30% moisture content. An air-drying model based on the principle of diffusivity was developed to help estimate air-drying times more accurately. Because the moisture movement rate considerably differs from that which occurs during kiln drying, the effective diffusion coefficients were experimentally determined at different temperatures. A user-friendly computer program predicting air-drying times was developed using the control volume method. The model was experimentally confirmed by air-drying practices. This program is a powerful tool used to estimate the air-drying times for any final moisture content for larch lumber, at any time of the year, at any location where the historical meteorological data, such as temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed, is available. This tool enables mill managers to generate an optimal operation plan based on their kiln capacity, yard availability, inventory requirements, and weather conditions.

Rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam is one of the most important insulating materials used today in the construction industry and is the main insulation material used in the global appliances industry. This study developed rice straw fiber-filled PUF (RPUF) and wheat straw fiber-filled PUF (WPUF) and explored the morphology, sound absorption properties, heat transfer, and compressive strength of the PUF composites. The results indicated that, with the higher fiber content, more open cells were observed in SEM images of the composites. The average sound absorption coefficients (ASAC) of both WPUF and RPUF were significantly increased when 5 per hundred polyols (php) by weight and 10 php fiber contents were added. When fiber contents of 15 php and 20 php were utilized, ASAC reduced due to the tortuosity of cells and large holes in the foam. The sound absorption coefficient (SAC) first increased, then decreased, and increased finally as the sound frequency increased from 100 to 2000 Hz for the two composites. The thermal conductivities of both WPUF and RPUF first decreased and then increased as the fiber content increased from 0 to 20 php. When 5 and 10 php straw contents was added, the thermal conductivities were reduced by 25% to 50% compared to that of the pure PU form (0 php), indicating that the improved thermal insulation ability was obtained. The composite compressive strength was reduced by 19% to 28% due to the fiber addition.

Super-hydrophobic phenomena generally exist in nature, and wood can also obtain hydrophobicity by specific processing on the surface, being like the construction of microscale rough surface or decoration with low surface energy materials. In this research, the formation of hydrophobic layers on wood surface was investigated without breaking the wood’s original structure. The core-shell structure particles were prepared by penetrating orthosilicate and polystyrene into the hollow mesoporous microsphere structure with tetrahydrofuran. A wood sample was coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) resin layer to enhance the adhesion of nano and micron hollow mesoporous microsphere on its surface. According to the surface structure of super-hydrophobic subjects in nature, the nano and micron hollow mesoporous microsphere were sprayed with different ratios several times to form a hydrophobic surface. The water contact angle could reach 150°, revealing that the hydrophobic behavior of the nano and micron hollow mesoporous microsphere coating was achieved. The microstructures of wood samples were examined by the scanning electron microscopy, and the chemical functional groups were investigated by the Fourier transform infrared; both verified that the hydrophobic surface was successfully coated. The thermogravimetric examination revealed the improved thermal stability of the hydrophobic wood. The scratch test was used to measure the abrasion resistance of the nano and micron hollow mesoporous microsphere coatings on wood surface. It was suggested that the nano and micron hollow mesoporous microsphere coating was an effective method to fabricate extremely hydrophobic wood products.

An eco-friendly and novel water treatment material was synthesized using sodium lignosulfonate modified polystyrene (SLPS), which can be used to eliminate phenols in aqueous solution. SLPS was characterized by BET, FTIR, SEM, and EDS. The effect of the initial pH value, phenol content, adsorption time, and temperature on the absorbability of phenol in SLPS was investigated through adsorption experiments. It was found that SLPS could efficiently adsorb phenol in aqueous solution at a pH value of about 7. The test results revealed that the kinetic adsorption and isotherm adsorption could be successfully described using the pseudo second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. It was illustrated that the phenol adsorption on SLPS was dominated by chemisorption and belonged to monolayer adsorption. The max. phenol adsorption value of SLPS was 31.08 mg/g at 30 °C. Therefore, SLPS displayed a great potential for eliminating phenol from polluted water as a kind of novel and effective adsorbent.

As a hydrophilic material, wood is difficult to utilize for external applications due to the variable weather conditions. In this study, an efficient, facile, and low-cost method was developed to enhance the hydrophobicity of wood. By applying the low-temperature chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology, the polydimethylsiloxane-coated wood (PDMS@wood) with hydrophobic surface was fabricated employing dichlorodimethylsilane as the CVD chemical resource. The result of water contact angle (i.e., 157.3°) revealed the hydrophobic behavior of the PDMS@wood. The microstructures of the wood samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis verified PDMS successfully coated on wood surfaces. The chemical functional groups of the PDMS@wood were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectra. The thermogravimetric results indicated the enhanced thermal stability of the wood after PDMS coating. In addition, the stability test of PDMS@wood indicated that the hydrophobicity properties of the PDMS@wood samples were preserved after long-time storage (e.g., 30 days). The scratch test was carried out to examine the abrasion resistance of the hydrophobic coatings on PDMS@wood surface. It was suggested that low-temperature CVD process could be a successful approach for fabricating hydrophobic wood.

The growing demand for lightweight, renewable, and excellent thermal insulation materials has fueled a search for high performance biomass materials with good mechanical compressibility and ultralow thermal conductivity. We propose a fabrication method for making a lightweight, anisotropic, and compressible wood aerogel with aligned cellulose fibers by a simple chemical treatment. The wood aerogel was mainly composed of highly aligned cellulose fibers with a relative crystallinity of 77.1%. The aerogel exhibits a low density of 32.18 mg/cm3 and a high specific surface area of 31.68 m2/g due to the removal of lignin and hemicellulose from the wood. Moreover, the multilayer structure of the aerogel was formed under the restriction of wood rays. Combined with a nanoscale pore, the aerogel presents good compressibility and an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.033 W/mK. These results show that the wood aerogel is a high quality biomass material with a potential function of thermal insulation through optimizing structures.

Validation of land cover products is a fundamental task prior to data applications. Current validation schemes and methods are, however, suited only for assessing classification accuracy and disregard the reliability of land cover products. The reliability evaluation of land cover products should be undertaken to provide reliable land cover information. In addition, the lack of high-quality reference data often constrains validation and affects the reliability results of land cover products. This study proposes a validation schema to evaluate the reliability of land cover products, including two methods, namely, result reliability evaluation and process reliability evaluation. Result reliability evaluation computes the reliability of land cover products using seven reliability indicators. Process reliability evaluation analyzes the reliability propagation in the data production process to obtain the reliability of land cover products. Fuzzy fault tree analysis is introduced and improved in the reliability analysis of a data production process. Research results show that the proposed reliability evaluation scheme is reasonable and can be applied to validate land cover products. Through the analysis of the seven indicators of result reliability evaluation, more information on land cover can be obtained for strategic decision-making and planning, compared with traditional accuracy assessment methods. Process reliability evaluation without the need for reference data can facilitate the validation and reflect the change trends of reliabilities to some extent.

Background/Aims: Naked mole rats (NMRs) survive and thrive in dark, dank environments with low levels of oxygen and poor quality nutrition. Their long lifespan is attributed to sustained good health and pronounced resistance to cancer. Physiological and biochemical processes, such as autophagy, may contribute to the successful aging of this exceptionally long-lived species. We demonstrated that NMRs have higher levels of autophagy than short-lived C57BL/6 mice, and this may play an important role in the maintenance of cellular protein quality and the defense of cells against intracellular and extracellular aggressors in NMRs. The present study assesses autophagy as a means for cells to flexibly respond to environmental changes (H2O2 treatment and a shortage of nutrients). Methods: Primary NMR HSCs were isolated from liver and treated with serum-free medium. Cells in the experimental group were incubated with different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the presence and / or absence of 3-MA (5 mM).The LC3-II/LC3-I ratio was determined by western blot analysis. Western blotting was performed to analyze the expression level of Beclin 1 protein. Apoptosis and cell-cycle progression were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results: Our data reveal that both poor quality nutrition and H2O2 treatment induces apoptosis and autophagy in NMR hepatic stellate cells(HSCs). Conclusion: NMR cells have the capacity to induce cell death through apoptosis and downregulate the energy consuming processes through inhibition of proliferation when they become superfluous or irreversibly damaged.

Background/Aims: The maximum lifespan of the naked mole rat is over 28.3 years, which exceeds that of any other rodent species, suggesting that age-related changes in its body composition and functionality are either attenuated or delayed in this extraordinarily long-lived species. However, the mechanisms underlying the aging process in this species are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated whether long-lived naked mole rats display more autophagic activity than short-lived mice. Methods: Hepatic stellate cells isolated from naked mole rats were treated with 50 nM rapamycin or 20 mM 3-methyladenine (3-MA) for 12 or 24 h. Expression of the autophagy marker proteins LC3-II and beclin 1 was measured with western blotting and immunohistochemistry. The induction of apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry. Results: Our results demonstrate that one-day-old naked mole rats have higher levels of autophagy than one-day-old short-lived C57BL/6 mice, and that both adult naked mole rats (eight months old) and adult C57BL/6 mice (eight weeks old) have high basal levels of autophagy, which may be an important mechanism inhibiting aging and reducing the risk of age-related diseases. Conclusion: Here, we report that autophagy facilitated the survival of hepatic stellate cells from the naked mole rat, and that treatment with 3-MA or rapamycin increased the ratio of apoptotic cells to normal hepatic stellate cells.

Background/Aims: It has been demonstrated that KRAS mutations represent about 90% of cancer-associated mutations, and that KRAS mutations play an essential role in neoplastic transformation. Cancer-associated RAS mutations occur frequently in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), suggesting a functional role for Ras in leukemogenesis. Methods: We successfully established a mouse model of human leukemia by transplanting bone marrow cells co-transfected with the K-ras (G12D) mutation and AML1/ETO fusion protein. Results: Mice transplanted with AML/ETO+KRAS co-transduced cells had the highest mortality rate than mice transplanted with AML/ETO- or KRAS-transduced cells (115d vs. 150d). Upon reaching a terminal disease stage, EGFP-positive cells dominated their spleen, lymph nodes, peripheral blood and central nervous system tissue. Immunophenotyping, cytologic analyses revealed that AML/ETO+KRAS leukemias predominantly contained immature myeloid precursors (EGFP+/c-Kit+/Mac-1-/Gr-1-). Histologic analyses revealed that massive leukemic infiltrations were closely packed in dense sheets that effaced the normal architecture of spleen and thymus in mice transplanted with AML1/ETO + KRAS co-transduced cells. K-ras mRNA and protein expression were upregulated in bone marrow cells of the K-ras group and AML1/ETO + Kras group. The phosphorylation of MEK/ERK was significantly enhanced in the AML1/ETO + Kras group. The similar results of the AML1/ETO + Nras group were consistent with those reported previously. Conclusion: Co-transduction of KrasG12D and AML1/ETO induces acute monoblastic leukemia. Since expression of mutant K-ras alone was insufficient to induce leukemia, this model may be useful for investigating the multi-step leukemogenesis model of human leukemia.

This study was aimed at improving the conductivity of polylactic acid (PLA)-based composites by incorporating carbonaceous fillers. The composites with the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (rGO) or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated by the masterbatch melting method in order to improve the dispersion of the two kinds of nano-fillers. The results showed that, with the addition of 9 wt % rGO, the volume electrical resistivity of the composite reached the minimum electrical resistance of 103 Ω·m, at which point the conductive network in the composites was completely formed. The interfacial compatibility, apparent viscosity, and the thermal stability of the composite were also good. The rGO functionalized by sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) was an efficient method to further improve the electrical conductivity of the composite, compared with tannic acid and MWCNTs. The resistivity was reduced by an order in magnitude. Patterns printed onto different baseplates by fused deposition modeling illustrated that the functionalized composite had certain flexibility and it is suitable for printing complex shapes.

The aim of the study was to improve the electrical and thermal conductivity of the polylactic acid/wood flour/thermoplastic polyurethane composites by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). The results showed that, when the addition amount of nano-graphite reached 25 pbw, the volume resistivity of the composites decreased to 108 Ω·m, which was a significant reduction, indicating that the conductive network was already formed. It also had good thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. The adding of the redox graphene (rGO) combined with graphite into the composites, compared to the tannic acid-functionalized graphite or the multi-walled carbon nanotubes, can be an effective method to improve the performance of the biocomposites, because the resistivity reduced by one order magnitude and the thermal conductivity increased by 25.71%. Models printed by FDM illustrated that the composite filaments have a certain flexibility and can be printed onto paper or flexible baseplates.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the uniformity of density distribution for Bamboo-bundle Laminated Veneer Lumber (BLVL) and its relationship to the stability of mechanical performance. A novel assembly style called one-piece veneer formation technology was developed to enhance the density uniformity, and four different density levels for BLVL were examined by X-ray scanning. The results indicated that the homogeneity of density, the stability of mechanical performance, and the mechanical properties for BLVL could be effectively improved by assembling the bamboo bundles into layers and then combining the layers to make the lumber. The density uniformity in width and thickness directions increased with increasing target density. A negatively linear correlation between density and Coefficient of Variation (COV) of MOR and shearing strength was observed. Partial correlation analysis revealed that when controlling for the variability of density, the linear relationship between density and the COV of MOR became insignificant, and the degree of linear correlation between density and the COV of shearing strength decreased.

Lipid A, the hydrophobic anchor of lipopolysaccharide, is an essential component in the outer membrane of most Gram-negative bacteria. Food-borne pathogen Cronobacter sakazakii synthesizes two lipid A species, differing by the length of the secondary acyl chain. In this work, we identified three genes ESA02293, ESA02951 and ESA01386 encoding for the late acyltransferases of lipid A biosynthesis pathway in C. sakazakii. Based on the sequence alignment, proteins YP_001438378.1 encoded by ESA02293, YP_001439016.1 encoded by ESA02951, and YP_001437482.1 encoded by ESA01386 are homologous to E. coli LpxL, LpxP and LpxM, respectively. Functions of the three acyltransferases were confirmed by overexpressing the genes in E. coli, isolating lipid As and analyzing their structures using an ESI/MS. C. sakazakii LpxL and LpxM transfer a C14:0 secondary acyl chain to the 2′- and 3′-position of lipid A, respectively. C. sakazakii LpxP can transfer either a C16:1 or a C14:0 secondary acyl chains to the 2′-position of lipid A.

To extend the application of mountain pine beetle (MPB) killed lumber for decking, siding, and landscaping materials, it is essential to improve its dimensional stability. Thermal treatment is one of the well-established processes used to improve wood stability by modifying chemical compounds and masking blue-stains by darkening the fibre color. In this study, the MPB lumber was subjected to thermal treatment at three temperatures (195, 205, or 215°C) and three exposure times (1.5, 2, or 3 h). Based on Duncan's multiple range test, the results indicated that the volumetric swelling after thermal treatment, either from oven-dry to air-conditioned or from oven-dry to water-saturated, was significantly reduced after thermal treatment. Modulus of elasticity was increased when specimens were treated at a temperature of 195°C, and then decreased as the temperature increased. Modulus of rupture was significantly reduced as treatment temperature increased. The hardness of lumber thermal-treated at 195°C was significantly increased compared to that of the untreated lumber. At higher temperatures, hardness started to decrease slightly. With the treatment temperature increasing to 215°C for 3 h, the color difference between stained and clear wood was reduced by 75%. As a result, the blue-stains vanished gradually.

In this study, a series of heat-induced shape memory composites was prepared by the hot-melt extrusion and three-dimensional (3D) printing of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) using wood flour (WF) with different contents of EPDM-g-MAH. The mechanical properties, microtopography, thermal property analysis, and heat-induced shape memory properties of the composites were examined. The results showed that, when the EPDM-g-MAH content was 4%, the tensile elongation and tensile strength of the composites reached the maximum value. The scanning electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical analysis results revealed a good interface bonding between TPU and WF when the EPDM-g-MAH content was 4%. The thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal stability of TPU/WF composites was enhanced by the addition of 4% EPDM-g-MAH. Heat-induced shape memory test results showed that the shape memory performance of composites with 4% EPDM-g-MAH was better than that of unmodified-composites. The composites’ shape recovery performance at a temperature of 60 °C was higher than that of the composites at ambient temperature. It was also found that, when the filling angle of the specimen was 45°, the recovery angle of the composites was larger.

The soy protein isolate (SPI), sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and pentaerythritol glycidyl ether (PEGE) were used to make biodegradable films in this study. Unlike the usual method that adding sodium hydroxide (NaOH) during the SPI-based film casting, SDBS was used as a surfactant playing the similar role as NaOH. Since NaOH is a chemical with corrosiveness and toxicity, the replacing of NaOH by SDBS might reduce the hazard threat during the utilization of SPI-based films in food packing application. Furthermore, the presentation of SDBS helped dispersing the hydrophobic PEGE into the hydrophilic SPI. PEGE is a crosslinking agent with multiple reactive epoxy groups. The chemical structures and micro morphologies of the fabricated films were investigated by means of FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The thermal stabilities of the films were examined by means of the thermo-gravimetric analysis. After the chemical crosslinking, the ultimate tensile strength of the film was significantly increased, meanwhile, the water absorption was dramatically decreased. It was concluded that the SPI-based film containing 4% PEGE achieved the optimal performance.
