Child temperament is a predictor of non-verbal ability (i.e. thinking and problem-solving skills that do not fundamentally require verbal language production and comprehension). Given that temperament scores might vary depending on whether the reporter is a parent or a teacher, this study analyses (a) whether those reports are different and (b) how each report predicts child non-verbal ability in a non-western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic sample. The Matrix subtest of KABC-II (a non-verbal ability task widely used in non-western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic contexts) was administered to 85 Argentinian children (47 girls, 38 boys) aged 4-5 years, from middle-to-low socioeconomic status homes. Also, the Child Behaviour Questionnaire-Very Short Form was administered to obtain temperament reports from parents and teachers. We will compare the parent's and teacher's reports on temperament using Mann-Whitney U-tests. Finally, multiple linear regression analyses will be conducted to explore how parent and teacher reports of temperament predict non-verbal ability. Each temperament dimension will be analysed separately. Results should be interpreted considering the low sample size.

Abstract Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects articular cartilage, leading to changes on the macro and micro levels of this multi-component tissue. Understanding the processes underlying this pathology plays an important role in planning the following management tactics. Timely detection of the knee joint degradation at the level of tissue changes can prevent its progressive damage due to the early beginning of appropriate treatment. This study aimed to provide an overview of the current level of knowledge about the composition of cartilage and menisci using a wide range of different diagnostic methods. A systematic review of the literature published from 1978 to 2023 was conducted. Original studies of the knee joint cartilage (articular and meniscus) research, reporting content composition and mechanical properties, were included. Studies of the non-knee joint cartilage, tissue research other than cartilage and meniscus, or reporting treatment outcomes were excluded (n = 111). Thirty-one papers were included in this review, which reported on the composition of animal and human cartilage (articular and meniscus). The most frequently investigated parameters were quantitative proteoglycan determination and hydration level of the cartilage. Cartilage and meniscus degeneration, i.e., reduced collagen and proteoglycan content, reduced mechanical properties, and increased hydration level, was shown in every article about osteoarthritis. Among all diagnostic methods, laboratory methods (biochemical and histological analysis) are the most frequently used, compared to the instrumental ones (spectroscopy, MRI, and CT). At the same time, spectroscopy takes the lead and becomes the most common approach for determining cartilage composition (collagen and proteoglycans content). Graphical Abstract

Cognitive interventions that involve executive functions (EF)-demanding activities are effective in changing task-related brain activity in children from homes with low socioeconomic status (SES). However, less is known about the efficiency of EF-based interventions in modifying segregation and integration properties of the functional neural organization during a resting state. Further, the consideration of the initial cognitive performance in the design of interventions and its role in the outcome of cognitive training has been poorly studied. The present study aimed to examine the impact of two individualized cognitive interventions with EF-demanding activities on brain connectivity in preschoolers (n = 79) from low-SES homes in Argentina using complex network analysis. At baseline, participants were classified as high- or low-performers based on their performance in an inhibitory control task, and then they were assigned into intervention and control groups within each performance level. Before and after the intervention, the neural activity of each child was recorded at rest using a mobile electroencephalogram device. We found significant intervention-related changes in global efficiency, global strength, and the strength of long-range connections in the [theta] frequency band in the intervention low-performing group. These findings support the idea that patterns of processing crucial information in the brain may be modified in children from low-SES homes through an EF-based intervention. Finally, these findings show different intervention-related effects on neural activity between children with low and high initial cognitive performance and add new evidence about the interaction between individual characteristics and intervention approaches.

Large-scale introduction of automated processes into medical practice, including ophthalmology, can simplify the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Being part of the general biological system of the body, the eye is an exemplary object of mathematical modeling targeted at treatment optimization, — e. g. when choosing a surgical tool for retinal detachment surgery.Purpose: to develop a software for automatic calculation of the individual length of the circular band to be used in retinal detachment treatment in order to achieve the optimal height of scleral indentation.Materials and methods. The study had a dual task: 1) to determine the correlation between the axial length (AL) and the equatorial diameter of the eyeball, measured by ultrasonic A- and B-scanning in healthy patients (90 eyes), and 2) to develop formulas for calculating the optimal length of the scleral buckle.Results. The formulas found to be effective in clinical practice were used to develop a software calculating the required length of the 3-mm wide circular band made of pourous silicon from the patient’s axial length. The software, called Circular Scleral Buckle Length, operates under Windows or Linux, is freely downloadable using a QR-code.Conclusion. The software greatly facilitates the determination of the optimal length of the buckling material for each patient, simplifies the operation of circular scleral buckling, reduces the time of the operation, minimizes the risk of complications, and ensures favorable anatomical and functional results.

Future-oriented decision-making is an important adaptive behavior. In the present study, we examined whether decision-making varies as a function of socioeconomic status (SES) using the Children's Gambling task (CGT). We administered the CGT to 227 children (49% female, 48% low SES) between the ages of 5 and 7 years. After completing the CGT, we assessed children's knowledge of the reward/loss contingencies. Data analysis was conducted through multilevel modeling. Fluid intelligence, as measured by the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence, was included as a covariate in the analysis. Overall performance differed between SES groups. Children from middle/high-SES backgrounds learned to choose more from the deck with higher future reward. In contrast, children in the low-SES group did not act in a full future-oriented manner. No differences were found in the level of explicit understanding of the task reached by the two SES groups. Whereas middle/high-SES children with higher knowledge of the game performed better on the last blocks of the task in comparison with their same-SES peers with no understanding, low-SES children with higher explicit knowledge did not exhibit an improvement in their decision-making strategy in comparison with their same-SES low-awareness counterparts. Fluid intelligence did not predict CGT performance, suggesting that SES differences were not mediated by reasoning capabilities. The finding that children from low-SES families continued exhibiting an immediate reward-oriented strategy despite being aware of deck contingencies fits with (although speculatively) the evolutionary-developmental framework.

Purpose. To compare the anatomical and functional results of surgical treatment for full-thickness macular holes with and without the gas tamponade of the vitreous cavity. Material and methods. The study included 2 groups of patients. All surgeries were performed at the Ekaterinburg Branch of the Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution in the period from 2018 to 2020. In the 1st group (30 eyes), the traditional MH treatment technology was used, patients in the second group (30 eyes) were treated without the use of tamponade, according to the method developed at the center. In the 1st group, the minimal diameter of the macular hole was from 194 to 755 (446.43±32.37) μm, the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) – from 0.04 to 0.4 (0.16±0.02). The minimal diameter of the macular rupture in the 2nd group was from 100 to 932 μm (558.5±50.9), BCVA – from 0.02 to 0.25 (0.11±0.02) (p>0.05). The follow-up period was 1 to 20 months (8.9±0.8). Results. Complete closure of the macular hole in the early postoperative period: 1st group was achieved in 29 out of 30 cases (96.6%), 2nd group – in 30 out of 30 cases (100%). BCVA on the first day after the surgery: 1st group – from 0.005 to 0.15 (0.02±0.01), 2nd group – from 0.08 to 0.35 (0.2±0.02) (p0.05). Conclusion. Comparative analysis of the effectiveness of surgical treatment of through MH without the use of postoperative vitreal tamponade and the traditional method based on gas tamponade showed a significant reduction in the rehabilitation period for the method without tamponade.

The incidence of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) constantly increases in the world. Studying the mechanisms underlying ASD as well as searching for new therapeutic targets are crucial tasks. Many researchers agree that autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Clstn2-KO mouse strain with a knockout of calsyntenin 2 gene (Clstn2) is model for investigating ASD. This study aims to evaluate the social-conditioned place preference as well as density of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), which belongs to the brain reward system, in the males of the Clstn2-KO strain using wild type C57BL/6J males as controls. Social-conditioned place preference test evaluates a reward-dependent component of social behavior. The results of this test revealed differences between the Clstn2-KO and the control males, as the former did not value socializing with the familiar partner, spending equal time in the isolationand socializing-associated compartments. The Clstn2-KO group entered both compartments more frequently, but spent less time in the socializingassociated compartment compared to the controls. By contrast, the control males of the C57BL/6J strain spent more time in socializing-associated compartment and less time in the compartment that was associated with loneness. At the same time, an increased number of DA and possibly GABA neurons labeled with antibodies against the type 2 dopamine receptor as well as against tyrosine hydroxylase were detected in the VTA of the Clstn2-KO mice. Thus, a change in social-conditioned place preference in Clstn2-KO mice as well as a higher number of neurons expressing type 2 dopamine receptors and tyrosine hydroxylase in the VTA, the key structure of the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway, were observed.

The preliminary study examined teacher and students' translanguaging practices in a preschool in Sarawak, Malaysia. Analysis of audio-recorded interactions of 15 students with their teachers in two preschool classrooms (1 English, 1 Malay) found 291 instances of teacher talk functions (English, 87; Malay, 204) and 222 instances of student talk functions (English, 71; Malay, 151). As the teachers were teaching English and Malay languages, the communicative function dominated, followed by management and academic functions. The teacher provided participation cues, affirmed students' responses and assessed their knowledge. However, in the Malay lesson where students were not limited by their language proficiency, the teacher also asked students to give clarification, and provided new information to expand students' schema. A large percentage of student talk functions in the English and Malay lessons were representational, followed by repetitions. Almost all (92.72%) student talk functions were performed in the medium of instruction in the Malay lesson, compared to 56.34% in the English lesson. The study shows the importance of translanguaging to provide the language support for the preschool students' less developed language.

This article deals with the issues of the terminological system formation as a set of professional knowledge terms on the example of English customs activities. The terminology of this fi eld of knowledge plays a key role in the formation of a professional language. It is possible to use diff erent approaches in the study of the problems of systematization and classifi cation of lexical units. Firstly, the composition of the customs dictionary should be considered as a unique, integral structure, including separate components – thematic groups of terms. Secondly, the close relationship of customs concepts with other professional fi elds should be analyzed. The study is conducted on the English legislative acts material, including customs, periodicals, dictionary entries, etc. The variant of the customs term system structure proposed by the author of the article includes six comprehensive semantic and thematic groups: customs management, customs procedures, customs nomenclature, customs duties and taxes, customs statistics, customs control. Each group contains a list of customs concepts, which, in turn, are related not only to each other, but also to other groups. This confi rms the fact that the term system of customs activities functions as an integral mechanism. On the other hand, the development and formation of the term system of customs activity is greatly infl uenced by the term systems of spheres related to that of customs. It seems possible to trace the relationship between the terminological systems of customs activity and the legislative branch, criminal law, international law, administrative law, IT-technology, transport logistics, offi ce management, economics, foreign trade, medicine and many other spheres, which once again confi rms the interdisciplinary nature of the fi eld of knowledge under consideration.

Abstract Reflecting the first wave COVID-19 pandemic in Central Europe (i.e. March 16th–April 15th, 2020) the neurosurgical community witnessed a general diminution in the incidence of emergency neurosurgical cases, which was impelled by a reduced number of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), spine conditions, and chronic subdural hematomas (CSDH). This appeared to be associated with restrictions imposed on mobility within countries but also to possible delayed patient introduction and interdisciplinary medical counseling. In response to one year of COVID-19 experience, also mapping the third wave of COVID-19 in 2021 (i.e. March 16 to April 15, 2021), we aimed to reevaluate the current prevalence and outcomes for emergency non-elective neurosurgical cases in COVID-19-negative patients across Austria and the Czech Republic. The primary analysis was focused on incidence and 30-day mortality in emergency neurosurgical cases compared to four preceding years (2017–2020). A total of 5077 neurosurgical emergency cases were reviewed. The year 2021 compared to the years 2017–2019 was not significantly related to any increased odds of 30 day mortality in Austria or in the Czech Republic. Recently, there was a significant propensity toward increased incidence rates of emergency non-elective neurosurgical cases during the third COVID-19 pandemic wave in Austria, driven by their lower incidence during the first COVID-19 wave in 2020. Selected neurosurgical conditions commonly associated with traumatic etiologies including TBI, and CSDH roughly reverted to similar incidence rates from the previous non-COVID-19 years. Further resisting the major deleterious effects of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, it is edifying to notice that the neurosurgical community´s demeanor to the recent third pandemic culmination keeps the very high standards of non-elective neurosurgical care alongside with low periprocedural morbidity. This also reflects the current state of health care quality in the Czech Republic and Austria.

Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) represent conditions starting in childhood, which are characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, as well as non-typical and stereotyping models of behavior. The mechanisms and the origin of these disorders are not yet understood and thus far there is a lack of prophylactic measures for these disorders. The current study aims to estimate neuronal density in the prefrontal cortex and four hippocampal subfields, i. e. СA1, СA2, СA3, and DG in Clstn2-KO mice as a genetic model of ASD. In addition, the level of neurogenesis was measured in the DG area of the hippocampus. This mouse strain was obtained by a knockout of the calsinthenin-2 gene (Clsnt2) in C57BL/6J mice; the latter (wild type) was used as controls. To estimate neuronal density, serial sections were prepared on a cryotome for the above-mentioned brain structures with the subsequent immunohistochemical labeling and confocal microscopy; the neuronal marker (anti-NeuN) was used as the primary antibody. In addition, neurogenesis was estimated in the DG region of the hippocampus; for this purpose, a primary antibody against doublecortin (anti-DCX) was used. In all cases Goat anti-rabbit IgG was used as the secondary antibody. The density of neurons in the CA1 region of the hippocampus was lower in Clstn2-KO mice of both sexes as compared with controls. Moreover, in males of both strains, neuronal density in this region was lower as compared to females. Besides, the differences between males and females were revealed in two other hippocampal regions. In the CA2 region, a lower density of neurons was observed in males of both strains, and in the CA3 region, a lower density of neurons was also observed in males as compared to females but only in C57BL/6J mice. No difference between the studied groups was revealed in neurogenesis, nor was it in neuronal density in the prefrontal cortex or DG hippocampal region. Our new findings indicate that calsyntenin-2 regulates neuronal hippocampal density in subfield-specific manner, suggesting that the CA1 neuronal subpopulation may represent a cellular target for earlylife preventive therapy of ASD.

Abstract One of the severe complications occurring because of the patient’s intubation is tracheal stenosis. Its incidence has significantly risen because of the COVID-19 pandemic and tends only to increase. Here, we propose an alternative to the donor trachea and synthetic prostheses—the tracheal equivalent. To form it, we applied the donor trachea samples, which were decellularized, cross-linked, and treated with laser to make wells on their surface, and inoculated them with human gingiva-derived mesenchymal stromal cells. The fabricated construct was assessed in vivo using nude (immunodeficient), immunosuppressed, and normal mice and rabbits. In comparison with the matrix ones, the tracheal equivalent samples demonstrated the thinning of the capsule, the significant vessel ingrowth into surrounding tissues, and the increase in the submucosa resorption. The developed construct was shown to be highly biocompatible and efficient in trachea restoration. These results can facilitate its clinical translation and be a base to design clinical trials. Oxyapatites A10(GeO4)6O2 (A – alkaline, rare‐earth elements) are considered promising materials for applications in solid‐state lighting and non‐contact thermometry. The temperature dynamics of the oxygen sublattice have a crucial influence on the luminescent properties of these optical hosts. Here, the structural evolution with temperature of germanates with the general formula ALa9(GeO4)6O2 (A – Li, Na, K, Rb) is investigated, using X‐ray and neutron powder diffraction methods. These compounds crystallize in space‐group P63/m. NPD experiments helped to determine the oxygen and alkaline metal positions. Thermally‐induced reentrant structural transitions relating to the oxygen in the apatite channel are discovered for the first time. In the example of Eu‐doped RbLa9(GeO4)6O2 and KLa9(GeO4)6O2, it is demonstrated that the luminescence of the Eu3+ ion is influenced by small changes in the crystal structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have associated intronic variants in PDE4B, encoding cAMP-specific phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE4B), with increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as schizophrenia and substance use disorders that are often comorbid with it. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of genetic risk involving PDE4B are poorly understood. To examine the effects of PDE4B variation on phenotypes with translational relevance to psychiatric disorders, we focused on PDE4B missense variant M220T, which is present in the human genome as rare coding variant rs775201287. When expressed in HEK-293 cells, PDE4B1-M220T exhibited an attenuated response to a forskolin-elicited increase in the intracellular cAMP concentration. In behavioral tests, homozygous Pde4bM220T male mice with a C57BL/6JJcl background exhibited increased reactivity to novel environments, startle hyperreactivity, prepulse inhibition deficits, altered cued fear conditioning, and enhanced spatial memory, accompanied by an increase in cAMP signaling pathway-regulated expression of BDNF in the hippocampus. In response to a traumatic event (10 tone-shock pairings), neuronal activity was decreased in the cortex but enhanced in the amygdala and hippocampus of Pde4bM220T mice. At 24 h post-trauma, Pde4bM220T mice exhibited increased startle hyperreactivity and decreased plasma corticosterone levels, similar to phenotypes exhibited by PTSD patients. Trauma-exposed Pde4bM220T mice also exhibited a slower decay in freezing at 15 and 30 d post-trauma, demonstrating enhanced persistence of traumatic memories, similar to that exhibited by PTSD patients. These findings provide substantive mouse model evidence linking PDE4B variation to PTSD-relevant phenotypes and thus highlight how genetic variation of PDE4B may contribute to PTSD risk. Extreme poverty all over the world is concentrated in rural settings. However, studies about cognition in low socioeconomic status (SES) children are for the most part conducted in urban populations. This paper investigates, in a poor rural sample, what are the individual and socioenvironmental variables that make the difference in performance in a processing speed task. Forty four 5-year-old children were evaluated with a processing speed task; individual and socioenvironmental information was obtained from parents' interviews. Higher scores in the effortful control dimension of temperament were associated with higher performance in the processing speed task. No other individual or socioenvironmental variable predicted the performance. These results showed that effortful control is important in processing speed and suggest that in low SES rural contexts, low effortful control children would require stronger interventions.

El estudio acerca de las causas de la pobreza ha sido influenciado por la teoría de la atribución, lo que permitió identificar los juicios predominantes que las personas establecen sobre tales causas. Los estudios locales sobre las atribuciones causales de la pobreza son escasos y no se ha identificado ninguno referido a las causas de la pobreza infantil, a pesar de las altas tasas de su incidencia en el país. Así, el presente estudio propone evaluar las atribuciones causales de la pobreza general e infantil por parte de adultos de Argentina, empleando dos cuestionarios (uno sobre las causas de la pobreza en general y el otro sobre la pobreza infantil en particular) implementados de manera virtual. La muestra incluyó a 1 659 participantes (17 a 90 años), quienes debieron indicar la importancia de cada ítem como causa de la pobreza en una escala tipo Likert de cinco puntos. En cuanto al cuestionario sobre las causas de la pobreza general, el análisis exploratorio permitió identificar una estructura de tres factores –similar a la identificada en otros estudios: individualista, estructurales y fatalistas–, la cual no fue verificada en el análisis confirmatorio. Con respecto al cuestionario sobre las causas de la pobreza infantil, se identificó y se confirmó un modelo de dos factores (que podrían estar relacionados con atribuciones estructurales y familiares) que representa una nueva evidencia en el campo. Los resultados sugieren diferencias en las atribuciones de las causas de pobreza general e infantil, cuyos posibles mecanismos (e. g., modulación por parte de factores individuales, contextuales y culturales) deberían explorarse en estudios futuros.
