The thesis examines the nature of cartel stabilit y by trying to complement standard economic analysis with evidence of the institutional detail surrounding such solutions to the problem of oli g opolistic interdependence. Firstly, the thesis discusses the raison d'etre of cartels as well as the factors responsible for their characteristic instability. Secondly, a systematic anal ysis is presented of the data found in the files at the Office of Fair Trading of oligopolistic agreements registered under the 1956 Restrictive Trade Practices Act. Finally, the thesis will describe and analyse in the context of the prior discussion, the outcome, in the case of eight cartels that successfully passed through the Restrictive Trade Practices Court.

[b]Introduction and objective.[/b] There have been many studies published recently on obesity and the risk of renal cancer; however, the epidemiological evidence for such an association has not been consistent. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted of the prospective cohort studies to assess the association between obesity and the risk of renal cancer incidence and death. [b]Materials and methods.[/b] A search was conducted of the PubMed database and references to published studies from inception until May 2013. Guidelines for Assessing Quality in Prognostic Studies on the Basis of Framework for Potential Biases were followed for quality assessment of studies included in the systematic review. [b]Results. [/b]Twenty eligible studies were identified and included in the systematic review. Among the 20 selected studies, overall study quality was high. Although the evidence from the prospective cohort studies, linking obesity with renal cancer incidence, has not been entirely consistent, there is a convincing body of data for a positive relationship. Moreover, cumulative data is compelling for a strong positive association between obesity and fatal renal cancer. [b]Conclusions.[/b] There is a relatively consistent amount of evidence that obesity increases the risk of renal cancer and fatal renal cancer. Further research is needed as better understanding of mechanisms by which obesity may influence renal cancer development and progression will aid the fostering of strategies for prevention and treatment of one of the most lethal human malignancies.

In minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), an aerosol containing a minimum amount of the cutting fluid is delivered to the tool/workpiece interface during the metal cutting operation. The fluid lubrication by the fluid and the cooling by the compressed air in the aerosol improves the cutting process, while the low consumption rate in MQL provides less cleanup and reduces the associated cost. In this paper, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles were added to the aerosol for providing a third functionality to the MQL, which is solid lubrication at the interface. Both orbital drilling and tribological testing using a four-ball tester were studied to examine the effectiveness of solid lubrication in MQL. In orbital drilling of titanium with tungsten carbide tools, MQL with nanofluids containing MoS2 nanoparticles resulted in less transfer film buildup on the tool. In four-ball testing, MQL with nanofluids with MoS2 and hBN nanoparticles yielded lower surface temperatures and less variation of frictional torques in titanium.

The investigation described, in this is designed to produce a digital closed loop speed control system for a d.c. motor using a thyristor power amplifier and a digital, minicomputer as integral components of the system. The thyristor amplifier is direct digitally controlled and also has digital current limiting protection. A digital form of a conventional analogue proportional controller, and a scheduled controller based on pre-recorded performance characteristics for the motor are first discussed, but rejected as impractical because of the complexity of the resulting system. Control based on a bang-bang principle with a variable mode switching control action designed to minimise limit cycling is then introduced. This method is shown to produce very acceptable performance using quite simple system software and appears to be immediately applicable to microprocessor implementation. A further refinement, that of dual or adaptive sampling designed to further reduce limit cycling effects in steady state operation, is then introduced. A control or switching matrix is developed as a design method for the switching controller which functions when the control computer recognises the required operating region for the motor as defined by signum functions of error and error rate within the system. The final controller uses multi-mode operation in which the loop gain and feedback constants are controlled as a function of error and error rate. It also incorporates an adaptive sampling period, and results in a digital speed control system which has both simple hardware and software. Suggestions for methods of further improving performance using a system of parallel processing with a view to using a microprocessor as the control computer, but still retaining system simplicity, are also discussed.

Background Little is known about the incidence of severe critical events in children undergoing general anaesthesia in Europe. We aimed to identify the incidence, nature, and outcome of severe critical events in children undergoing anaesthesia, and the associated potential risk factors. Methods The APRICOT study was a prospective observational multicentre cohort study of children from birth to 15 years of age undergoing elective or urgent anaesthesia for diagnostic or surgical procedures. Children were eligible for inclusion during a 2-week period determined prospectively by each centre. There were 261 participating centres across 33 European countries. The primary endpoint was the occurence of perioperative severe critical events requiring immediate intervention. A severe critical event was defined as the occurrence of respiratory, cardiac, allergic, or neurological complications requiring immediate intervention and that led (or could have led) to major disability or death. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01878760. Findings Between April 1, 2014, and Jan 31, 2015, 31â127 anaesthetic procedures in 30â874 children with a mean age of 6·35 years (SD 4·50) were included. The incidence of perioperative severe critical events was 5·2% (95% CI 5·0â5·5) with an incidence of respiratory critical events of 3·1% (2·9â3·3). Cardiovascular instability occurred in 1·9% (1·7â2·1), with an immediate poor outcome in 5·4% (3·7â7·5) of these cases. The all-cause 30-day in-hospital mortality rate was 10 in 10â000. Experiments were carried out at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in collaboration with The Boeing Company, to obtain force and temperature data as a function of feed, speed, and fiber orientation angle (FOA), for validation of finite element simulations of composite machining. The outer diameter portions of disks of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates were cut orthogonally. Tabs were machined into the outer diameter (OD) to cause cutting to begin at a FOA of 0° and end at a FOA of 90°. Cutting forces were measured using a dynamometer and the chip morphology was recorded using a high speed camera. It was observed that the variation of cutting force with FOA depended on the feed. For large feed, the cutting force increases with FOA until an angle of 90°, whereas for low feed the cutting force decreases beyond 65°. The chip morphology also changes with FOA and feed. Significant tool flank wear is noted even in these short duration experiments, which causes the thrust and cutting forces to increase significantly for FOA from 0° to 60°. For 65°–80° FOA, force signals change cyclically. A small spike in the cutting force seems to be correlated with fibers being pulled out in clumps, and is followed by lower forces in subsequent revolutions while the pitted surface is machined.

The aim of this study was to establish whether the pre-emptive use of lornoxicam (16mg) in third molar surgery ensures successful postoperative analgesia and reduces rescue analgesic intake when compared to postoperative application, and in comparison with placebo. Ninety patients were split randomly into three groups: group A received lornoxicam 60min before surgery and placebo 60min after surgery; group B received placebo 60min before surgery and lornoxicam 60min after surgery; group C received placebo 60min before surgery and placebo 60min after surgery. Postoperative pain was recorded on a visual analogue scale and on a numerical rating scale at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24h after surgery. The patients recorded total dose of paracetamol intake during the 24h after the procedure. The efficacy of postoperative analgesia was greater in lornoxicam groups when compared to the placebo group; there was no difference between the two lornoxicam groups (A and B). Patients in group C took their first rescue analgesic dose earlier after surgery than patients in the two lornoxicam groups. The average dose of paracetamol taken in group C was 1000mg, while it was500 mg in the lornoxicam groups.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the submucosal injection of 1ml dexamethasone (4mg/ml) on pain, swelling, and trismus following the extraction of retained lower third molars. Ninety patients (mean age 23.5 years) were split randomly into three equal study groups (30 patients in each): the 'before' group received dexamethasone 15min before surgery and placebo 15min after surgery; the 'after' group received placebo 15min before surgery and dexamethasone 15min after surgery; the 'placebo' group received placebo 15min before surgery and placebo 15min after surgery. Postoperative pain was recorded by the patients using a visual analogue scale, numerical rating scale, and the McGill Pain Questionnaire at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24h after surgery. The patients also recorded the total number of analgesic doses consumed during the 24h after the procedure. Swelling (determined using linear measurements of the face) and trismus (determined through measurement of maximum mouth opening) were assessed at 48h, 72h, and 7 days following surgery. Better control of pain, swelling, and trismus was demonstrated for dexamethasone in comparison to placebo. Postoperative dexamethasone provided better pain control than preoperative dexamethasone. There was no difference in total rescue analgesic intake between the preoperative and postoperative dexamethasone groups.

Background: Despite the introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, peginterferon alfa/ribavirin remains relevant in many resource-constrained settings. Nel corso degli ultimi decenni, il segmento degli studi economici, conosciuto nel nostro paese con il nome di Economia industriale, e nel mondo anglosassone con quello di Industrial Organization, è profondamente cambiato. L’approccio tradizionale, sviluppato tra gli anni trenta e sessanta del secolo scorso dai grandi studiosi della scuola di Harvard, e riassumibile nel paradigma struttura-comportamenti-risultati economici, è stato arricchito da molteplici contributi di carattere microeconomico, che hanno ampliato notevolmente sia il ventaglio di tematiche oggetto di studio in quest’area, sia la strumentazione teorica ed empirica utilizzabile per affrontarle. Gli sviluppi, che si sono rivelati essenziali per l’evoluzione dell’Economia industriale, riguardano principalmente i costi di transazione e i contratti imperfetti, la contendibilità dei mercati e le caratteristiche dell’informazione, mentre la teoria dei giochi ha avuto un impatto rilevante nello studio dei mercati oligopolistici, principale oggetto d’analisi di questa disciplina. Gli effetti sono stati rilevanti: i vecchi libri di testo sono diventati rapidamente obsoleti e sono stati pubblicati numerosi manuali che cercano di fornire conoscenze e strumenti più aggiornati. [b]Introduction and objective.[/b] There have been many studies published recently on obesity and the risk of renal cancer; however, the epidemiological evidence for such an association has not been consistent. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted of the prospective cohort studies to assess the association between obesity and the risk of renal cancer incidence and death. [b]Materials and methods.[/b] A search was conducted of the PubMed database and references to published studies from inception until May 2013. Guidelines for Assessing Quality in Prognostic Studies on the Basis of Framework for Potential Biases were followed for quality assessment of studies included in the systematic review. [b]Results. [/b]Twenty eligible studies were identified and included in the systematic review. Among the 20 selected studies, overall study quality was high. Although the evidence from the prospective cohort studies, linking obesity with renal cancer incidence, has not been entirely consistent, there is a convincing body of data for a positive relationship. Moreover, cumulative data is compelling for a strong positive association between obesity and fatal renal cancer. [b]Conclusions.[/b] There is a relatively consistent amount of evidence that obesity increases the risk of renal cancer and fatal renal cancer. Further research is needed as better understanding of mechanisms by which obesity may influence renal cancer development and progression will aid the fostering of strategies for prevention and treatment of one of the most lethal human malignancies.

Sulfonate esters of lower alcohols possess the capacity to react with DNA and cause mutagenic events, which in turn may be cancer inducing. Consequently, the control of residues of such substances in products that may be ingested by man (in food or pharmaceuticals) is of importance to both pharmaceutical producers and to regulatory agencies. Given that a detailed study of sulfonate ester reaction dynamics (mechanism, rates, and equilibria) has not been published to date, a detailed kinetic and mechanistic study was undertaken and is reported herein as a follow-up to our earlier communication in this journal. The study definitively demonstrates that sulfonate esters cannot form even at trace level if any acid present is neutralized with even the slightest excess of base. Sulfonate salts offer useful modification of physicochemical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) containing basic groups, but there are regulatory concerns over the presence of sulfonate esters as potential genotoxic impurities (PGIs). Whilst sulfonate esters could theoretically result from interaction between sulfonic acids and alcohols, literature on their formation is sparse. GC−MS analysis of reactions of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and isotopically labeled methanol (18O-label) confirm methanol C−O bond cleavage in the formation of the methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), consistent with reversal of well-established mechanisms for solvolysis of sulfonate esters. Studies of reaction profiles quantify methyl methanesulfonate formation under a range of conditions relevant to API processing. This paper continues the review of the relevant scientific literature associated with the control and analysis of potential genotoxic impurities (PGIs) in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The initial review [D.P. Elder, A. Teasdale, A.M. Lipczynski, J. Pharm. Biomed. Anal. 46 (2008) 1-8.] focused on the specific class of sulfonate esters but in this instance reference is made to the analysis of alkyl and benzyl halides and other related reactive organohalide alkylating agents. Such reactive materials are commonly employed in pharmaceutical research and development as raw materials, reagents and intermediates in the chemical synthesis of new drug substances. Consequently a great deal of attention and effort is extended by the innovative and ethical pharmaceutical industry to ensure that appropriate and practicable control strategies are established during drug development to ensure residues of such agents, as potential impurities in new drug substances, are either eliminated or minimized to such an extent so as to not present a significant safety risk to volunteers and patients in clinical trials and beyond. The reliable trace analysis of such reactive organohalides is central to such control strategies and invariably involves a state-of-the-art combination of high-resolution separation science techniques coupled to sensitive and selective modes of detection. This article reports on the most recent developments in the regulatory environment, overall strategies for the control of alkylating agents and the latest developments in analysis culminating in a literature review of analytical approaches. The literature is sub-categorized by separation technique (gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin layer chromatography (TLC) and capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE)) and further tabulated by API type and impurity with brief method details and references. As part of this exercise, a selection of relevant pharmacopoeial monographs was also reviewed. The continued reliance on relatively non-specific and insensitive TLC methodologies in several monographs was noteworthy.

The new materials and material combinations such as composites and titanium combinations used on today’s new airplanes are proving to be very challenging when drilling holes during manufacturing and assembly operations. Orbital hole drilling technology has shown a great deal of promise for generating burr free, high quality holes in hard metals and in composite materials. This paper will show some of the orbital drilling development work Boeing is doing with Novator to overcome the obstacles of drilling holes in a combination of both hard metals and composites. The paper will include a new portable orbital drilling system designed for these challenging applications as well as some test results achieved with this system.

Our aim was to provide a better understanding of why many adults fail to receive recommended immunizations. Consumers (N = 2,002) and healthcare providers (N = 200) completed structured telephone interviews concerning their attitudes and knowledge about adult vaccines and factors affecting their vaccination decisions. Self-reported immunization rates for tetanus, influenza, and pneumococcal vaccines (which were emphasized in the surveys) were lower than goal rates set by national guidelines. Among the most common reasons consumers gave for not receiving immunizations were lack of physician recommendations and mistaken assumptions (e.g., healthy people do not need immunizations). Healthcare providers tended to cite concerns such as side effects, fear of needles, and lack of insurance coverage as reasons consumers forego vaccination. Providers also cited practice issues, such as lack of an effective reminder system, as barriers to increasing adult immunization rates. We conclude that a better understanding of why adults do not get vaccinated is important for efforts to increase immunization rates in this broad age group.

This article reviews current regulatory guidelines and relevant scientific literature pertaining to the control and analysis of potential genotoxic impurities (PGIs) in new active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with specific reference to a certain sub-class of PGIs, namely alkyl esters of alkyl and aryl sulfonic acids. Sulfonic acids are very important in pharmaceutical R&D employed both as counter-ions in the formation of acid-addition salts and also as reagents and catalysts in the synthesis of new drug substances. The article reviews the evolution of analytical methodology from early studies in the mid 1970s through development of direct injection GC and HPLC methods to liquid-liquid/solid phase extraction and headspace based techniques coupled to HPLC and GC methodologies employing UV and MS detection to new derivatisation-based techniques. The paper also reflects on the significant challenges in developing robust analytical methodology capable of the trace determination of sulfonate esters, the challenges in transferring methodology from R&D to QC labs and on the cost of inappropriate limits for genotox impurities. In so doing, the authors seek to inform the debate that the control of genotoxic impurities should be driven primarily by safety and risk/benefit considerations rather than by state-of-the-art analytical and process chemistry capabilities that drive controls to levels 'as low as practicable' regardless of the risk/safety requirements.

A simple, reliable and fast procedure for the simultaneous determination of residues of some common alkylating agents (AAs), such as mesylates, besylates, tosylates and sulfates, employed in drug synthesis, has been developed by in situ derivatization-headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Pentafluorothiophenol is used as a derivatizing agent in different water/dimethyl sulfoxide ratios. Compared to former analytical procedures, this approach returns improvements in analysis time, selectivity, analyte stability and method sensitivity (LOD=0.11 microgg(-1) for methyl tosylate). The method exhibits low matrix dependence, excellent accuracy, precision (R.S.D.=2.8-10% range at 1 microgg(-1)) and robustness through the use of deuterated internal standards. Knowledge of the synthetic route allows a targeted approach to the determination of specific AAs since the procedure does not distinguish between acid species. The procedure was successfully applied to different pharmaceutical matrixes, and is particularly suitable for routine analysis with high sample throughput.

Polypropylene and propylene/ethylene copolymers filled with modified or unmodified mineral fillers were obtained using two methods. In the first one the fillers were introduced in the polymerization process carried out in the presence of TiCl 4 /AIEt 3 catalyst on magnesium support. The other method consisted in mixing of the filler with a polymer and further melting of the whole system. The effects of the type and amount of the filler on the activity of catalytic system (reaction rate) were determined (Fig. 1,2). The dependences of density and tensile properties of the composites obtained on the method of preparation were investigated (Table 1 and 2). The results show the polymers prepared by melt blending of the polymers with the fillers, both modified and unmodified, show good mechanical properties. What concerns the composites prepared in the polymerization step, only in the case of use of unmodified bentonite the polymer obtained showed good strength properties and lack of catalytic system deactivation. However, organophilized fillers containing polar groups cause decrease in catalyst activity during the polymerization as well as deterioration of mechanical properties of the product.

A low-power photovoltaic system has been designed where energy storage is performed in two stages: a standard final one based on a battery, and an intermediary one based on supercapacitors. A prototype of the system, including a simple maximum power point tracker and a battery charger, has been realised and tested. Measurements have shown that considerable additional energy can be obtained using this approach. It will prove especially useful in climatic zones where insolation shows considerable variations within short time intervals. The circuit has been sized for a single low-power photovoltaic module which makes it suitable for investigation by students in a photovoltaics lab.

Summary A 5-year-old Thoroughbred mare was subjected to cytogenetic and molecular analysis because of infertility and masculine behaviour. Chromosome studies, including painting with the whole X chromosome specific probe, revealed a male chromosome complement (64,XY). The PCR amplification of the SRY and ZFY genes showed the presence of both those genes, while the endocrinological study demonstrated a high level of testosterone (9.7 nmol/l). Sequencing of the SRY gene (1121 bp), comprising also 5′- and 3′-UTRs, did not reveal any differences when compared with the sequence of normal stallions. It was proposed that this mare represents the androgen insensitivity syndrome (testicular feminization syndrome).
