The article focuses on the Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Finland and its role in training professional musicians and encouraging young people to pay pop, rock and jazz music. It was established as the Oulunkylä Pop/Jazz Institute in Helsinki by music teacher Klaus Järvinen and his wife Seija in the early 1970s. Principal Janne Murto also describes the conservatory's cooperative orchestra projects and participation in international projects.

We use the microscopic interacting-boson approximation (IBA-2) to calculate the nuclear M1 transition current density for excitation by inelastic electron scattering. Although the strong 1+excitations are commonly regarded as due to proton convection, we find, with164Dy as a test case, that proton and neutron spins cause strong oscillations in the current and are responsible for high-qscattering.

The abundant experimental information on low- and high-energy M1 excitations in 46,48Ti, obtained recently through (e, e′), (p, p′) and (γ, γ′) experiments, is well described within a quasiparticle RPA approach, based on a deformed Woods-Saxon potential plus spin-spin and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions. It includes a procedure which restores the rotational invariance of the hamiltonian. The low-lying strong M1 states overlap up to 36% with the scissors state of the two-rotor model. These states, as well as some medium-energy 1+excitations, represent a weakly collective scissors motion, more pronounced in 46Ti than in 48Ti. The titanium isotopes offer a better approximation to the scissors state than do the heavy nuclei because in lighter nuclei the scissors state is less collective.

Abstract:: Beta decay of 58Zn has been studied for the first time. A new laser ion-source concept has been used to produce mass-separated sources for beta and gamma spectroscopy. The half-life of 58Zn was determined to be 86(18) ms. Comparisons are made with previous data from charge-exchange reactions. Our Gamow–Teller strength to the 1+ state at 1051 keV excitation in 58Cu agrees well with the value extracted from a recent (3He, t) study. Extensive shell-model calculations are presented.

The article features jazz pianist Sid Hille. Born in Germany in 1961 and travelled for five years in India, Africa and the U.S. in his youth, Hille has lived in Finland for almost 20 years. It details his studies, graduating with a Master of Arts from Holland's Utrecht School of Arts in 1993. It talks about his musical projects which reportedly brought different musical styles together, his Platypus Ensemble, and his newest jazz project "Frizzle, Sizzle, Dazzle."

The Eighth International Symposium on Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy and RelatedTopics was held inFribourg, Switzerland, during 20-24 September 1993. The series dates back to 1969 when the first meeting was held in Studsvik, Sweden.
