Scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM) was carried out in the angle beveling configuration on B doped, very narrow quantum wells (QWs) of Si0.75Ge0.25 layers strained between Si films. The majority carrier concentration profiles were calculated from the SCM raw data measured on QWs with a minimum width of 5 nm, doped with different B concentrations ranging from 2×1016 to 6×1018 cm-3. The equilibrium carrier distribution in the heterostructures has been calculated by different simulation approaches, which will be discussed. Moreover, the effect of the biased tip-sample interaction was studied by accurate simulations of the dC/dV vs V characteristics for different positions of the tip moving on the beveled sample surface. The agreement between the experimental and simulated SCM profiles is very good. Thus, a spatial SCM resolution of at least 5 nm was demonstrated on angle beveled samples, not only in terms of signal sensitivity, but also in terms of quantitative majority carrier profiling. Background & Aims: COVID-19 is highly inflammatory and when it affects the elderly who have multiple comorbidities, the risk of malnutrition is high. The aim of this review is to highlight the evidence for COVID-19 and risk for malnutrition (macro- and micro-nutrient deficiency) sharing two case reports., Methods: We report two cases of patients with COVID-19. The first case includes a 75-year-old male with increasing confusion, delirium and malnutrition once he had clinically resolved from his COVID-19 diagnosis. The patient had a number of comorbidities and was treated with diuretics before and after his hospital admission. He was treated with intravenous thiamine and enteral nutrition. The second case includes a 77-year-old male with diabetes who presented with suspected vitamin C deficiency likely due to chronic aspirin use nearly two weeks prior to being diagnosed with pneumonia and COVID-19. The patient recovered from his COVID-19 diagnosis but continued to decline nutritionally and was readmitted sixty days later with failure to thrive., Results: The first case had significant improvements in his appetite and neurological conditions following thiamine infusion and enteral nutrition and was discharged to home after a 19-day hospital stay. The second case presented with a vitamin C deficiency before testing positive for COVID-19. Although he did recover from COVID-19 he struggled to meet nutritional needs post-COVID and passed away 60 days after his COVID-19 diagnosis with pneumonia and failure to thrive., Conclusion: Elderly patients with chronic diseases who use nutrient depleting medications are particularly high risk for micronutrient deficiency when they also experience the inflammatory insult of COVID-19. Study Design: Retrospective single-center study., Objectives: Persons with spinal cord injury live with neurogenic bowel dysfunction. Difficulties with management of neurogenic bowel can increase over time with age and time post injury, with a negative impact on autonomy and quality of life. Many conservative treatments are available to improve bowel management; however, in case of failure, a colostomy may be considered., Setting: Specialized Care Unit, Montecatone Rehabilitation Institute and General Surgery Division, Imola Hospital, Imola, Italy., Methods: From 2016 to 2019, selected patients affected by SCI and bowel dysfunction failing conservative care were treated with subtotal colectomy associated with placement of a bioabsorbable prosthesis, to prevent parastomal hernia. The surgical procedure is presented along with results., Results: Overall, 19 individuals underwent the described procedure; after 1 year of follow-up, we observed four minor complications: two cases of dehiscence of the abdominal incision, easily treated during hospital stay, and two cases of leakage of mucorrhoea., Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the efficacy of the procedure to improve bowel management in persons with spinal cord injury.

Objective and Design: Early results, complications and follow-up of 70 patients undergoing percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (BMV) were retrospectively analyzed to establish whether an increased surgical risk or an unfavourable echocardiographic score influenced the results., Patients: The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence (group A, n = 31) or absence (group B, n = 38) of high surgical risk factors. The patients were also divided into two other groups according to the presence (group C, n = 46) or absence (group D, n = 20) of favourable mitral valve anatomy. Group A (high surgical risk) included patients fulfilling at least one of the following criteria: 65 years of age or older; previous surgical commissurotomy; depressed left ventricular function; respiratory or hepatic insufficiency; or previous aortic valve replacement. Mitral valve anatomy was classified as 4 to 16, according to the echocardiographic score established by Abascal et al. Group C patients had echocardiographic score below 8 and group D had echocardiographic scores of 8 or greater., Interventions: Mean mitral valve gradient (MVG) and area (MVA) were Doppler-estimated immediately before and 48 h after the BMV., Main Results: There were no differences in the early results and complications between groups A and B (MVA 1.8 +/- 0.5 versus 1.9 +/- 0.4 cm2). Final MVA was significantly greater in group C than in group D (MVA 1.9 +/- 0.4 versus 1.6 +/- 0.4 cm2; P = 0.03). There was no difference in the incidence of complications. Over a follow-up period averaging 19.1 months (range 1 to 55), 90.7% of the patients were in New York Heart Association functional class I or II. Four patients had a mitral valve replacement, one had a surgical commissurotomy and one had a second BMV. Two unrelated deaths occurred. There were no differences in the characteristics of the study population and the incidence of events in the follow-up period between groups., Conclusions: The results and outcome of BMV were unrelated to the general surgical risk, suggesting that this procedure may be used with particular benefit in this group of patients. In contrast, mitral valve anatomy must be considered as an important determinant of the results.
