More than 50 years of solar system exploration have revealed the great diversity of volcanic landscapes beyond Earth, be they formed by molten rock, liquid water, or other volatile species. Classic examples of giant shield volcanoes, solidified lava flows, extensive ash deposits, and volcanic vents can all be identified, but except for eruptions seen on the Jovian moon Io, no planetary volcanoes have been observed in eruption. Consequently, the details of the processes that created these landscapes must be inferred from the available spacecraft data. Despite the increasing improvement in the spatial, temporal, compositional, and topographic characteristics of the data for planetary volcanoes, details of the way they formed are not clear. However, terrestrial eruptions can provide numerous insights into planetary eruptions, whether they are effusive eruptions resulting in the emplacement of lava flows or explosive eruptions due to either volatiles in the magma or the interaction between hot lava and water or ice. In recent decades, growing attention has been placed on the use of terrestrial analogs to help interpret volcanic landforms and processes on the rocky planets (Mercury, Venus, the Moon, and Mars) and in the outer solar system (the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and the larger asteroids). In addition, terrestrial analogs not only provide insights into the geologic processes associated with volcanism but also can serve as test sites for the development of instrumentation to be sent to other worlds, as well as provide a training ground for crewed and uncrewed missions seeking to better understand volcanism throughout the solar system.

Mare domes, small shield volcanoes typically

Ring-moat dome structures (RMDSs) are small circular mounds of diameter typically about 200 m and ∼3–4 m in height, surrounded by narrow, shallow moats. They occur in clusters, are widespread in ancient Imbrian-aged mare basalt host units and show mineralogies comparable to those of their host units. Based on these close associations and similarities, a model has been proposed for the formation of RMDS as the result of late-stage flow inflation, with second boiling releasing quantities of magmatic volatiles that migrate to the top of the flow as magmatic foams and extrude through cracks in the cooled upper part of the flow to produce the small RMDS domes and surrounding moats. In contrast to this model advocating a contemporaneous emplacement of RMDSs and their host lava flows, a range of observations suggests that the RMDS formed significantly after the emplacement and cooling of their host lava flows, perhaps as recently as in the Copernican Period (∼1.1 Ga to the present). These observations include: (a) stratigraphic embayment of domes into post-lava flow emplacement impact craters; (b) young crater degradation age estimates for the underlying embayed craters; (c) regolith development models that predict thicknesses in excess of the observed topography of domes and moats; (d) landform diffusional degradation models that predict very young ages for mounds and moats; (e) suggestions of fewer superposed craters on the mounds than on the adjacent host lava flows, and (f) observations of superposed craters that suggest that the mound substrate does not have the properties predicted by the magmatic foam model. Together, these observations are consistent with the RMDS formation occurring during the period after the extrusion and solidification of the host lava flows, up to and including the geologically recent Late Copernican, that is, the last few hundreds of millions of years of lunar history. We present and discuss each of these contradictory data and interpretations and summarize the requirements for magma ascent and eruption models that might account for young RMDS ages. We conclude with a discussion of the tests and future research and exploration that might help resolve the RMDS age and mode of emplacement conundrum.

By mapping the distribution of 351 lava flows at the summit area of Olympus Mons volcano on Mars, and correlating these flows with the current topography from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), we have identified numerous flows which appear to have moved uphill. This disparity is most clearly seen to the south of the caldera rim, where the elevation increases by >200 m along the apparent path of the flow. Additional present day topographic anomalies have been identified, including the tilting down towards the north of the floors of Apollo and Hermes Paterae within the caldera, and an elevation difference of >400 m between the northern and southern portions of the floor of Zeus Patera. We conclude that inflation of the southern flank after the eruption of the youngest lava flows is the most plausible explanation, which implies that intrusive activity at Olympus Mons continued towards the present beyond the age of the youngest paterae ~200 – 300 Myr (Neukum et al., 2004; Robbins et al., 2011). We propose that intrusion of lateral dikes to radial distances >2,000 km is linked to the formation of the individual paterae at Olympus Mons. Two specific dikes to the SE of the volcano are inferred to have volumes of ~4,400 km3 and ~6,100 km3, greater than the volumes of individual calderas and implying triggering of both caldera collapse and lateral dike injection by the arrival of large inputs of magma from the mantle. A comparable disparity between lava flow direction and current topography, together with a tilted part of the caldera floor, has been identified at Ascraeus Mons.

The surface of Mercury is dominated by extensive, widespread lava plains that formed early in its history. The emplacement of these lavas was accompanied by the release of magmatic volatiles, the bulk of which were lost to space via thermal escape and/or photodissociation. Here we consider the fate of these erupted volatiles by quantifying the volumes of erupted volcanic plains and estimating the associated masses of erupted volatiles. The concentrations and speciation of volatiles in Mercury's magmas are not known with certainty at this time, so we model a wide range of cases, based on existing experimental data and speciation models, at 3–7 log fO2 units below conditions determined by the iron-wustite buffer. Cases range from relatively low gas content scenarios (total exsolved gas mass of 9 × 10 15 kg) to high gas content scenarios (total exsolved gas = 5 × 1019 kg). We estimate that the average duration of a transient volcanic atmosphere resulting from a single eruption would be between ∼250 and ∼210,000 years, depending on the volume, degassed volatile content, and eruption rate of an individual eruption, as well as the fO2 conditions of the planet's interior. If a dense transient atmosphere was ever surface-bound long enough for the released volatiles to be transported to and cold-trapped at Mercury's polar regions, those trapped volatiles are predicted to be well-mixed with the regolith, and at least 16 m beneath the surface given regolith gardening rates. These volatiles would have a composition and age distinctly different from those of the H2O-ice deposits observed at the poles of Mercury today.

One of the most important questions in planetary science is the origin of the current Venus atmosphere, its relationship and coupling to Venus’ geologic and geodynamic evolution, andwhy it is so different from that of the Earth. We specifically address the following question:Does the eruption of the total volume of extrusive volcanic deposits observed in the exposed geologic record of Venus contribute significantly to the current atmosphere through volatile release during emplacement of the extruded lavas? To address this question, we used the observed geologic and stratigraphic record of volcanic units and features, and their volumes, as revealed by Magellan (1; their Fig. 26 and Table 5). We converted the volumes of the main volcanic units to lava/magma masses using a density of 3000 kg m-3. Next, we chose the upperthickness values, and added the contributions from allof the units; summing the values of the "total eruptives" gives the absolute upper limit estimate of the mass of documented volcanics that could contribute to the atmosphere, 7.335 x 1020 kg. We then compare this with the current mass of the Venus atmosphere (4.8 x 1020 kg). We find that in order to make the current atmosphere from the above volcanics, the magma would have to consist of 65.4% by mass volatiles, which is, of course, impossible. We conclude that the grand totalof the currently documented volcanics can not have produced other than a very small fraction of the current atmosphere.Exsolution of volatiles during volcanic eruptions is significantly dependent on surface atmospheric pressure (2-3). However, the total volumeof lava erupted in the period of global volcanic resurfacingis still insufficient to produce the CO2atmosphere observed today, even if the ambient atmospheric pressure at that time was only 50% of what it is today. Therefore, a very significant part of the current CO2atmosphere must have been inherited from a time prior to the observed geologic record, sometime in the first ~80% of Venus history. Furthermore, the total volumeof lava erupted in the stratigraphically youngest period of the observed record (1) is insufficient to account for the current abundance of SO2 in the atmosphere; thus, it seems highly unlikely that current and recently ongoing volcanism could be maintaining the currently observed ‘elevated’ levels of SO2 in the atmosphere (4). In addition, because of the fundamental effect of atmospheric pressure on the quantity of volatiles that will be degassed, varying the nature of the mantle melts over a wide range of magma compositions and mantle fO2 appears to have minimal influence on the outcome. We conclude that the current Venus atmosphere must be a “fossil atmosphere”, largely inherited from a previous epoch in Venus history, and if so, may provide significant insight into the conditions during the first 80% of Venus history.(1) Ivanov and Head (2013) Plan. Lunar mare regolith is traditionally thought to have formed by impact bombardment of newly emplaced coherent solidified basaltic lava. We use new models for initial emplacement of basalt magma to predict and map out thicknesses, surface topographies and internal structures of the fresh lava flows, and pyroclastic deposits that form the lunar mare regolith parent rock, or protolith. The range of basaltic eruption types produce widely varying initial conditions for regolith protolith, including (1) autoregolith, a fragmental meter-thick surface deposit that forms upon eruption and mimics impact-generated regolith in physical properties, (2) lava flows with significant near-surface vesicularity and macroporosity, (3) magmatic foams, and (4) dense, vesicle-poor flows. Each protolith has important implications for the subsequent growth, maturation, and regional variability of regolith deposits, suggesting wide spatial variations in the properties and thickness of regolith of similar age. Regolith may thus provide key insights into mare basalt protolith and its mode of emplacement.

A transient lunar atmosphere formed during a peak period of volcanic outgassing and lasting up to about ~70 Ma was recently proposed. We utilize forward-modeling of individual lunar basaltic eruptions and the observed geologic record to predict eruption frequency, magma volumes, and rates of volcanic volatile release. Typical lunar mare basalt eruptions have volumes of ~102–103 km3, last less than a year, and have a rapidly decreasing volatile release rate. The total volume of lunar mare basalts erupted is small, and the repose period between individual eruptions is predicted to range from 20,000 to 60,000 years. Only under very exceptional circumstances could sufficient volatiles be released in a single eruption to create a transient atmosphere with a pressure as large as ~0.5 Pa. The frequency of eruptions was likely too low to sustain any such atmosphere for more than a few thousand years. Transient, volcanically induced atmospheres were probably inefficient sources for volatile delivery to permanently shadowed lunar polar regions. ©2020. American Geophysical Union. Ring-moat dome structures (RMDSs) are positive morphologic features found clustered across many mare regions on the Moon, of which only a few isolated examples have been previously reported. Our continuing survey has expanded the known locations of the RMDSs from ~2,600 to over 8,000, indicating that RMDSs are more common geological features than previously thought. This work presents a detailed geomorphological analysis of 532 RMDSs identified in several mare basins. The combination of detailed elemental mapping, morphological and morphometric analyses, spatial distribution relationships with other geologic structures, and comparison with terrestrial analogs lead us to conclude that (1) RMDSs represent low circular mounds with diameters of a few hundred meters (average about 200 m) and a mean height of 3.5 m. The mounds are surrounded by moats ranging from tens to over 100 m in width and up to several meters in depth; (2) there is a wide variation of titanium abundances, although RMDSs are more commonly found in mare regions of moderate-to-high titanium content (>3 wt% TiO2); (3) RMDSs are found to occur on or around fractures, graben, and volcanic edifices (small shields and cones); (4) a spatial association between RMDSs and Irregular Mare Patches (see Braden et al., 2014, https://doi.org/10.1038/ngeo2252) is observed, suggesting that both may form from related lava flows; (5) comparisons between RMDSs and lava inflationary structures on Earth support an inflation-related extrusive nature and a genetic relationship with host lava flow processes; and (6) RMDS embayment relationships with craters of different degradation ages superposed on the host mare, and regolith development models, produces conflicting age relationships and divide theories of RMDS origin into two categories, (1) synchronous with the emplacement and cooling of the host lava flows ~3–4 Ga and (2) emplaced substantially after the host mare lava unit, in the period ~0–3 Ga. We outline the evidence supporting this age conundrum and implications for the different theories of origin and describe future research avenues to help resolve these outstanding questions. ©2020. Four, quasi-circular, positive Bouguer gravity anomalies (PBGAs) that are similar in diameter (~90–190 km) and gravitational amplitude (>140 mGal contrast) are identified within the central Oceanus Procellarum region of the Moon. These spatially associated PBGAs are located south of Aristarchus Plateau, north of Flamsteed crater, and two are within the Marius Hills volcanic complex (north and south). Each is characterized by distinct surface geologic features suggestive of ancient impact craters and/or volcanic/plutonic activity. Here, we combine geologic analyses with forward modeling of high-resolution gravity data from the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission in order to constrain the subsurface structures that contribute to these four PBGAs. The GRAIL data presented here, at spherical harmonic degrees 6–660, permit higher resolution analyses of these anomalies than previously reported, and reveal new information about subsurface structures. Specifically, we find that the amplitudes of the four PBGAs cannot be explained solely by mare-flooded craters, as suggested in previous work; an additional density contrast is required to explain the high-amplitude of the PBGAs. For Northern Flamsteed (190 km diameter), the additional density contrast may be provided by impact-related mantle uplift. If the local crust has a density ~2800 kg/m(3), then ~7 km of uplift is required for this anomaly, although less uplift is required if the local crust has a lower mean density of ~2500 kg/m(3). For the Northern and Southern Marius Hills anomalies, the additional density contrast is consistent with the presence of a crustal complex of vertical dikes that occupies up to ~37% of the regionally thin crust. The structure of Southern Aristarchus Plateau (90 km diameter), an anomaly with crater-related topographic structures, remains ambiguous. Based on the relatively small size of the anomaly, we do not favor mantle uplift, however understanding mantle response in a region of especially thin crust needs to be better resolved. It is more likely that this anomaly is due to subsurface magmatic material given the abundance of volcanic material in the surrounding region. Overall, the four PBGAs analyzed here are important in understanding the impact and volcanic/plutonic history of the Moon, specifically in a region of thin crust and elevated temperatures characteristic of the Procellarum KREEP Terrane.

Sulfur is transported to the surface and released in volcanic effusive and explosive eruptions and is known to be concentrated in both time (acidic aqueous alteration environments in Late Noachian-Early Hesperian) and space (e.g., Valles Marineris-type layered deposits). Requirements necessary for formation, evolution and preservation of sulfates are highly specific due to high sulfate solubility and environmental sensitivity of sulfates to phase transitions (temperature and humidity). Can explosive volcanic eruptions under martian conditions help account for the characteristics of sulfate units in the Valles Marineris Interior Layered Deposits (VM-ILD)?As a basis for understanding the nature of volcanic eruptions in the martian environment (e.g., low gravity, currently low and historically evolving atmospheric pressure) we developed a theoretical and predictive framework for the generation, ascent and eruption of magma. We have: 1) shown that basaltic plinian eruptions are highly favored (relative to Earth), 2) explored the characteristics/dispersal of tephra/gases in various locations and Patm conditions, and 3) assessed the behavior/fate of S species during eruptions including the role of sulfuric acid precipitates in surface melting and creation of aqueous acidic environments.Observations consistent with volcanic eruptions under martian conditions accounting for characteristics of units in the VM-ILD include: 1) Volcanism is focused in Tharsis; 2) Explosive plinian basaltic volcanism is favored in general, and with increasing altitude (Tharsis) and decreasing Patm (time); 3) Finer ash is produced relative to Earth, enhancing dispersal; 4) Fine ash creates a profusion of nucleation sites for condensation of co-erupted water and S species; 5) Airfall products are tephra coated with condensed water and S species, producing extensive layered/graded deposits; 6) Tephra distribution is latitudinal (equatorial for Tharsis sources); 7) Temperatures of deposited tephra decrease with distance from vent; 8) Magmatic exsolution of sulfur is favored by lower Patm and enhanced by higher altitude eruption sites (Tharsis); 9) Sulfur speciation and atmospheric chemistry predictions favor sulfuric acid formation and widespread dispersal during and immediately following eruptions; 10) Condensation and ensuing precipitation of sulfuric acid is predicted to melt any existing surface snow and ice, and to provide acidic aqueous surface environments favoring sulfate precipitation; 11) Estimates of eruption duration and continuity readily predict km-thick accumulations; 12) Fluctuating eruption conditions and S speciation can lead to interbedding of phyllosilicates and sulfates. Explosive volcanism in the Tharsis region appears to meet the necessary requirements for the formation, evolution and preservation of sulfates in the VM-ILD, including: 1) sources of sulfur; 2) sources of liquid water; 3) cold climates; 4) resulting acidic environments (sulfur concentration in aqueous solutions); 5) mechanism to collect S-rich waters and then to evaporate water and concentrate/deposit sulfates; 6) varying climate conditions to permit observed interbedding of phyllosilicates and sulfates; 7) Tharsis environment accounts for concentration in certain locations; and 8) subsequent dry and cold climatic conditions preserve ancient sulfates to the present. To test this model we are compiling predictive tephra/volatile dispersal stratigraphies to compare to the detailed characteristics/trends observed in the Valles Marineris ILDs.

Mercury has been extensively resurfaced by large, effusive lava plains [1–2]. Similar lava plains on the Moon, the maria, are known to contain volatiles [3–4] and are estimated to have outgassed ~1016 kg of CO and S and ~1014 kg of H2O, with the bulk of volatiles being released during peak mare emplacement ~3.5 Ga ago [5]. If volcanic activity released substantial volatiles on the Moon [6–7], then it is possible that substantial volatiles were also volcanically released on Mercury, albeit with different chemical species [6–9]. Here we seek to understand the potential contribution of outgassing to volatile deposits, specifically for Mercury’s volatile species (S, CH4, Cl, and N-H).We analyze the production function of volcanic plains deposits on Mercury and find that the volume of outgassed basalts on Mercury is 2 to 3 orders of magnitude larger than that predicted for the Moon [8]. We use a variety of experimental petrology studies [10–12] to predict the dominant species and their abundances associated with these eruptions on Mercury, providing estimates for both low-gas and high-gas scenarios for different oxygen fugacities (IW-3 and IW-7). The most prevalent volatile species predicted for Mercury (S, CH4, and Cl) are 1 to 4 orders of magnitude more abundant than what is predicted for the most abundant volatiles outgassed on the Moon (CO, S, and H2O) [5].On the Moon, it has been predicted that volatiles outgassed from the formation of the maria may have been present in sufficient volumes to produce a transient atmosphere capable of aiding in the transport of H2O to cold-trapping regions [5]. At mantle pressures and Mercury’s extremely reducing conditions, H2O is not predicted to be present in the magma [e.g., 6–12]. Therefore, Mercury’s outgassed volatiles are of a different composition from the H2O ice observed at Mercury’s poles today [e.g., 13], and the polar H2O-ice deposits are better explained by some external delivery mechanism (likely cometary impacts). But the fate of large volumes of volatiles other than H2O is an important unanswered question for Mercury.The large volumes of outgassed volatiles calculated here suggest that volcanism on Mercury may have resulted in the transient production of anomalously high atmospheric pressures of short lifetime due to solar proximity. If Mercury’s atmospheric loss rate was insufficient to lose all of the erupted gases, then it is possible that ancient, outgassed volatiles remain trapped in the planet’s subsurface today. The lunar shield volcano Cauchy 5, sitting at the low diameter‐height‐volume end of the population, is the only known example containing two different types of Irregular Mare Patches (IMPs) in very close association: (1) the pit crater interior Type 1 IMP composed of bleb‐like mounds surrounded by a hummocky and blocky floor unit and (2) Type 2 IMPs, small, often optically immature pits less than ~5 m deep, located on the generally block‐deficient shield flanks. A four‐phase lunar magma ascent/eruption model predicts that during a relatively brief eruption, low magma rise rates maximize volatile exsolution in lava filling the pit crater. Bubble‐rich magmas overtop the pit crater and form extremely vesicular flows on the shield flanks. Exposure of the flanking flows to vacuum produces a fragmental layer of exploded glassy bubble walls. Subsequent second boiling upon cooling of the flanking flow interiors releases additional volatiles which migrate and collect, forming magmatic foams and gas pockets. As magma rise rates slow, trapped gas and magmatic foam build up below the cooling pit crater floor. Magmatic foams are extruded to form Type 1 IMP deposits. Type 2 IMPs on the flanks are interpreted to be due primarily to subsequent impacts causing collapse of the flow surface layer into the extremely vesicle‐ and void‐rich flow interior. Anomalously young pit crater floor/shield flank crater retention ages compared with surrounding maria ages may be due to effects of Cauchy 5 substrate characteristics (extreme micro‐ and macroporosity, foamy nature, and glassy auto‐regolith) on superposed crater formation and retention.

The SIMBIO-SYS instrument will provide all the science imaging capability of the BepiColombo MPO spacecraft. It consists of three channels: the STereo imaging Channel (STC), with a broad spectral band in the 400-950 nm range and medium spatial resolution (at best 58 m/px), that will provide Digital Terrain Model of the entire surface of the planet with an accuracy better than 80 m; the High Resolution Imaging Channel (HRIC), with broad spectral bands in the 400-900 nm range and high spatial resolution (at best 6 m/px), that will provide high-resolution images of about 20% of the surface, and the Visible and near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging channel (VIHI), with high spectral resolution (6 nm at finest) in the 400-2000 nm range and spatial resolution reaching 120 m/px, it will provide global coverage at 480 m/px with the spectral information, assuming the first orbit around Mercury with periherm at 480 km from the surface. SIMBIO-SYS will provide high-resolution images, the Digital Terrain Model of the entire surface, and the surface composition using a wide spectral range, as for instance detecting sulphides or material derived by sulphur and carbon oxidation, at resolutions and coverage higher than the MESSENGER mission with a full co-alignment of the three channels. All the data that will be acquired will allow to cover a wide range of scientific objectives, from the surface processes and cartography up to the internal structure, contributing to the libration experiment, and the surface-exosphere interaction. The global 3D and spectral mapping will allow to study the morphology and the composition of any surface feature. In this work, we describe the on-ground calibrations and the results obtained, providing an important overview of the instrument performances. The calibrations have been performed at channel and at system levels, utilizing specific setup in most of the cases realized for SIMBIO-SYS. In the case of the stereo camera (STC), it has been necessary to have a validation of the new stereo concept adopted, based on the push-frame. This work describes also the results of the Near-Earth Commissioning Phase performed few weeks after the Launch (20 October 2018). Lunar floor-fractured craters (FFCs) represent the surface manifestation of a class of shallow crustal intrusions in which magma-filled cracks (dikes) rising to the surface from great depth encounter contrasts in host rock lithology (breccia lens, rigid solidified melt sheet) and intrude laterally to form a sill, laccolith or bysmalith, thereby uplifting and deforming the crater floor. Recent developments in the knowledge of lunar crustal thickness and density structure have enabled important revisions to models of the generation, ascent and eruption of magma, and new knowledge about the presence and behavior of magmatic volatiles has provided additional perspectives on shallow intrusion processes in FFCs. We use these new data to assess the processes that occur during dike and sill emplacement with particular emphasis on tracking the fate and migration of volatiles and their relation to candidate venting processes. FFCs result when dikes are capable of intruding close to the surface, but fail to erupt because of the substructure of their host impact craters, and instead intrude laterally after encountering a boundary where an increase in ductility (base of breccia lens) or rigidity (base of solidified melt sheet) occurs. Magma in dikes approaching the lunar surface experiences increasingly lower overburden pressures: this enhances CO gas formation and brings the magma into the realm of the low pressure release of H2O and sulfur compounds, both factors adding volatiles to those already collected in the rising low-pressure part of the dike tip. High magma rise velocity is driven by the positive buoyancy of the magma in the part of the dike remaining in the mantle. The dike tip overshoots the interface and the consequent excess pressure at the interface drives the horizontal flow of magma to form the intrusion and raise the crater floor. If sill intrusion were controlled by the physical properties at the base of the melt sheet, dikes would be required to approach to within ∼300 m of the surface, and thus eruptions, rather than intrusions, would be very likely to occur; instead, dynamical considerations strongly favor the sub-crustal breccia lens as the location of the physical property contrast localizing lateral intrusion, at a depth of several kilometers. The end of lateral and vertical sill growth occurs when the internal magma pressure equals the external pressure (the intrusion just supports the weight of the overlying crust). Dynamical considerations lead to the conclusion that dike magma volumes are up to ∼1100 km3, and are generally insufficient to form FFCs on the lunar farside; the estimated magma volumes available for injection into sills on the lunar nearside (up to ∼800 km3) are comparable to the observed floor uplift in many smaller FFCs, and thus consistent with these FFCs forming from a single dike emplacement event. In contrast, the thickest intrusions in the largest craters imply volumes requiring multiple dike contributions; these are likely to be events well-separated in time, rather than injection of new magma into a recently-formed and still-cooling intrusion. We present a temporal sequence of 1) dike emplacement, 2) sill formation and surface deformation, 3) bubble rise, foam layer formation and collapse, 4) intrusion cooling, and a synthesis of predicted deformation sequence and eruption styles. Initial lateral injection of the sill at a depth well below the upper dike tip initiates upbowing of the overburden, leveraging deformation of the crater floor melt sheet above. This is followed by lateral spreading of the sill toward the edges of the crater floor, where crater wall and rim deposit overburden inhibit further lateral growth, and the sill grows vertically into a laccolith or bysmalith, uplifting the entire floor above the intrusion. Subsidiary dikes can be emplaced in the fractures at the uplift margins and will rise to the isostatic level of the initial dike tip; if these contain sufficient volatiles to decrease magma density, eruptions can also occur. This initial phase of intrusion, sill lateral spreading and floor uplift occurs within a few hours after initial dike emplacement. During the subsequent cooling of the sill, bubbles can rise hundreds of meters to the top of the intrusion to create a foam layer; when drainage of gas bubble wall magma occurs in the foam layer, a continuous gas layer forms above the foam. Gas formation and upward migration produces an increase in sill thickness, while subsequent cooling and solidification cause a thickness decreases and subsidence. The total topographic evolution history, following an initial 2 km thick sill intrusion and floor uplift (hours), includes further floor uplift by gas formation and migration (decades; ∼30 m), followed by cooling, solidification and subsidence (∼a century; ∼350 m). An initial 2 km thick sill is predicted to have a final thickness of ∼1.7 km. This predicted sequence of events can be compared with the sequence of floor deformation and volcanism in FFCs in order to test and refine this model.

A model for the origin, ascent, and eruption of the lunar A17 orange glass magma has been constructed using petrological constraints from gas solubility experiments and from analyses of the lunar sample 74220 to better determine the nature and origin of this unique explosive eruption. Three stages of the eruption have been identified. Stage 1 of the eruption model extends from ~550 km, the A17 orange glass magma source region based on phase equilibria studies, to 50 km depth in the Moon. Stage 2 extends from ~50 km to 500 m, where a C-O-H-S gas phase formed and grew in volume based on melt inclusion analyses and measurements. The volume of the gas phase at 500 m depth below the surface is calculated to be 7 to 15 vol% of the magma (closed-system) using the minimum and maximum estimates of CO, H2O, and S loss from the melt. In Stage 3, depths shallower than ~450 m, the rising magma exsolved an additional 800–900 ppm H2O and 300 ppm S, increasing the moles in the gas by a factor of 3 to 4. The closed-system gas phase is calculated to reach ~70 vol% at ~130 m depth, enough to fragment the magma and form pyroclastic beads. However, fragmentation (bead formation) is interpreted to have occurred at depths ranging from 600 to 300 m below the lunar surface based on the pressure necessary to explain the C content of the orange glass beads. The gas volume (70%) required to fragment the ascending magma at this depth is a factor of ~5 greater than the volume determined for closed-system degassing of an orange glass magma at 500 m, strongly implying that the gas was produced by open-system degassing as the magma ascended from greater depths. Formation of the dike carrying the magma up from the ~550 km deep source is considered to occur by a crack propagation mechanism (Wilson and Head 2003, 2017). The rapid dike-propagation process facilitates gas collection by open-system degassing in the upper part of the dike. This is necessary to achieve the gas volumes required for magma fragmentation at 600 m depths, and the magma-ascent velocities to explain the wide areal distribution of the bead deposit. The explosive nature of the picritic orange glass eruption, and the homogeneity of the bead compositions, are consistent with this gas-assisted eruption scenario, as is the evidence of a Fe-metal forming reduction event during Stage 2 followed by a Stage 3 oxidation event in the ascending magma.

We report on a newly discovered morphological feature on the lunar surface, here named Ring-Moat Dome Structure (RMDS). These low domes (a few meters to ~20 m height with slopes

We model the ascent and eruption of lunar mare basalt magmas with new data on crustal thickness and density (GRAIL), magma properties, and surface topography, morphology and structure (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter). GRAIL recently measured the broad spatial variation of the bulk density structure of the crust of the Moon. Comparing this with the densities of lunar basaltic and picritic magmas shows that essentially all lunar magmas were negatively buoyant everywhere within the lunar crust. Thus positive excess pressures must have been present in melts at or below the crust–mantle interface to enable them to erupt. The source of such excess pressures is clear: melt in any region experiencing partial melting or containing accumulated melt, behaves as though an excess pressure is present at the top of the melt column if the melt is positively buoyant relative to the host rocks and forms a continuously interconnected network. The latter means that, in partial melt regions, probably at least a few percent melting must have taken place. Petrologic evidence suggests that both mare basalts and picritic glasses may have been derived from polybaric melting of source rocks in regions extending vertically for at least a few tens of km. This is not surprising: the vertical extent of a region containing inter-connected partial melt produced by pressure-release melting is approximately inversely proportional to the acceleration due to gravity. Translating the ∼25 km vertical extent of melting in a rising mantle diapir on Earth to the Moon then implies that melting could have taken place over a vertical extent of up to 150 km. If convection were absent, melting could have occurred throughout any region in which heat from radioisotope decay was accumulating; in the extreme this could have been most of the mantle. The maximum excess pressure that can be reached in a magma body depends on its environment. If melt percolates upward from a partial melt zone and accumulates as a magma reservoir, either at the density trap at the base of the crust or at the rheological trap at the base of the elastic lithosphere, the excess pressure at the top of the magma body will exert an elastic stress on the overlying rocks. This will eventually cause them to fail in tension when the excess pressure has risen to close to twice the tensile strength of the host rocks, perhaps up to ∼10 MPa, allowing a dike to propagate upward from this point. If partial melting occurs in a large region deep in the mantle, however, connections between melt pockets and veins may not occur until a finite amount, probably a few percent, of melting has occurred. When interconnection does occur, the excess pressure at the top of the partial melt zone will rise abruptly to a high value, again initiating a brittle fracture, i.e. a dike. That sudden excess pressure is proportional to the vertical extent of the melt zone, the difference in density between the host rocks and the melt, and the acceleration due to gravity, and could readily be ∼100 MPa, vastly greater than the value needed to initiate a dike. We therefore explored excess pressures in the range ∼10 to ∼100 MPa. If eruptions take place through dikes extending upward from the base of the crust, the mantle magma pressure at the point where the dike is initiated must exceed the pressure due to the weight of the magmatic liquid column. This means that on the nearside the excess pressure must be at least ∼19 ± 9 MPa and on the farside must be ∼29 ± 15 MPa. If the top of the magma body feeding an erupting dike is a little way below the base of the crust, slightly smaller excess pressures are needed because the magma is positively buoyant in the part of the dike within the upper mantle. Even the smallest of these excess pressures is greater than the ∼10 MPa likely maximum value in a magma reservoir at the base of the crust or elastic lithosphere, but the values are easily met by the excess pressures in extensive partial melt zones deeper within the mantle. Thus magma accumulations at the base of the crust would have been able to intrude dikes part-way through the crust, but not able to feed eruptions to the surface; in order to be erupted, magma must have been extracted from deeper mantle sources, consistent with petrologic evidence. Buoyant dikes growing upward from deep mantle sources of partial melt can disconnect from their source regions and travel through the mantle as isolated bodies of melt that encounter and penetrate the crust–mantle density boundary. They adjust their lengths and internal pressure excesses so that the stress intensity at the lower tip is zero. The potential total vertical extent of the resulting melt body depends on the vertical extent of the source region from which it grew. For small source extents, the upper tip of the resulting dike crossing the crust–mantle boundary cannot reach the surface anywhere on the Moon and therefore can only form a dike intrusion; for larger source extents, the dike can reach the surface and erupt on the nearside but still cannot reach the surface on the farside; for even larger source extents, eruptions could occur on both the nearside and the farside. The paucity of farside eruptions therefore implies a restricted range of vertical extents of partial melt source region sizes, between ∼16 and ∼36 km. When eruptions can occur, the available pressure in excess of what is needed to support a static magma column to the surface gives the pressure gradient driving magma flow. The resulting typical turbulent magma rise speeds are ∼10 to a few tens of m s−1, dike widths are of order 100 m, and eruption rates from 1 to 10 km long fissure vents are of order 105 to 106 m3 s−1. Volume fluxes in lunar eruptions derived from lava flow thicknesses and surface slopes or rille lengths and depths are found to be of order 105 to 106 m3 s−1 for volume-limited lava flows and >104 to 105 m3 s−1 for sinuous rilles, with dikes widths of ∼50 m. The lower end of the volume flux range for sinuous rilles corresponds to magma rise speeds approaching the limit set by the fact that excessive cooling would occur during flow up a 30 km long dike kept open by a very low excess pressure. These eruptions were thus probably fed by partial melt zones deep in the mantle. Longer eruption durations, rather than any subtle topographic slope effects, appear to be the key to the ability of these flows to erode sinuous rille channels. We conclude that: (1) essentially all lunar magmas were negatively buoyant everywhere within the crust; (2) positive excess pressures of at least 20–30 MPa must have been present in mantle melts at or below the crust–mantle interface to drive magmas to the surface; (3) such pressures are easily produced in zones of partial melting by pressure-release during mantle convection or simple heat accumulation from radioisotopes; (4) magma volume fluxes available from dikes forming at the tops of partial melt zones are consistent with the 105 to 106 m3 s−1 volume fluxes implied by earlier analyses of surface flows; (5) eruptions producing thermally-eroded sinuous rille channels involved somewhat smaller volume fluxes of magma where the supply rate may be limited by the rate of extraction of melt percolating through partial melt zones.

Ina, a distinctive ~2 × 3 km D-shaped depression, is composed of unusual bulbous-shaped mounds surrounded by optically immature hummocky/blocky floor units. The crisp appearance, optical immaturity, and low number of superposed impact craters combine to strongly suggest a geologically recent formation for Ina, but the specific formation mechanism remains controversial. We reconfirm that Ina is a summit pit crater/vent on a small shield volcano ~3.5 billion years old. Following detailed characterization, we interpret the range of Ina characteristics to be consistent with a two-component model of origin during the waning stages of summit pit eruption activities. The Ina pit crater floor is interpreted to be dominated by the products of late-stage, low-rise rate magmatic dike emplacement. Magma in the dike underwent significant shallow degassing and vesicle formation, followed by continued degassing below the solidified and highly microvesicular and macrovesicular lava lake crust, resulting in cracking of the crust and extrusion of gas-rich magmatic foams onto the lava lake crust to form the mounds. These unique substrate characteristics (highly porous aerogel-like foam mounds and floor terrains with large vesicles and void space) exert important effects on subsequent impact crater characteristics and populations, influencing (1) optical maturation processes, (2) regolith development, and (3) landscape evolution by modifying the nature and evolution of superposed impact craters and thus producing anomalously young crater retention ages. Accounting for these effects results in a shift of crater size-frequency distribution model ages from

Newly documented Ring Moat Dome Structures (RMDSs), low mounds typically several hundred meters across with a median height of ~3.5 m and surrounded by moats, occur in the lunar maria. They appear to have formed synchronously with the surrounding mare basalt deposits. It has been hypothesized that they formed on the surfaces of lava flows by the extrusion of magmatic foams generated in the flow interiors as the last stage of the eruption and flow emplacement process. We develop a theoretical model for the emplacement and cooling of mare basalts in which the molten cores of cooling flows are inflated during the late stages of eruptions by injection of additional hot lava containing dissolved volatiles. Crystallization of this lava causes second boiling (an increase in vapor pressure to the point of supersaturation due to crystallization of the melt), generating copious quantities of vesicles (magmatic foam layers) at the top and bottom of the central core of the flow. Flow inflation of many meters is predicted to accompany the formation of the foam layers, flexing the cooled upper crustal layer, and forming fractures that permit extrusions of the magmatic foams onto the surface to form domes, with subsidence of the subjacent and surrounding surface forming the moats. By modeling the evolution of the internal flow structure we predict the properties of RMDSs and the conditions in which they are most likely to form. We outline several tests of this hypothesis.

Chang'e-5, China's first lunar sample return mission, is targeted to land in northern Oceanus Procellarum, within a region selected on the basis of 1) its location away from the Apollo-Luna sampling region, 2) the presence of the Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT), 3) the occurrence of one of the youngest lunar mare basalts (Em4), and 4) its association with Rima Sharp. In order to provide context for returned sample analyses, we conducted a comprehensive study of the regional and global settings, geomorphology, composition, mineralogy, and chronology of the Em4 mare basalts. Superposed on Imbrian-aged low-Ti basalts, Em4 covers 37,000 km2 and is composed of Eratosthenian-aged (∼1.53 Ga), high-Ti basalts with a mean thickness of ∼51 m and a volume between ∼1450 and 2350 km3. Minor variations in TiO2 and FeO abundance occur within the unit and the thorium content averages ∼6.7 ppm, typical of PKT mare basaltic regolith. No specific source vents (e.g., fissures, cones, domes) were found within the unit. We show that Rima Sharp is actually composed of three major rilles, whose source vents are located outside of, and which flow into, and merge in Em4, suggesting that they may be among the sources for Em4. Regolith thickness averages ∼7 m and there is abundant evidence for vertical and lateral mixing; the most likely sources of distal ejecta are Aristarchus, Harpalus, and Sharp B craters. Returned samples from local and distant materials delivered by impact will thus provide significant new insights into lunar geochronology, inner Solar System impact fluxes, the age of very young mare basalts, the role of the PKT in the generation of mare basalts, the role of sinuous rilles in lava flow emplacement, and the thermal evolution of the Moon.

We have identified several landforms in the Galaxias Quadrangle of Mars (MTM 35217), 33.0–35.5°N, 216.0–218.0°W which are consistent with this area having been covered by an ancient ice sheet concurrent with volcanic eruptions. Volcanic activity was initiated by the intrusion of several large dikes measuring ∼50–100 m wide and protruding up to ∼35 m above the present-day surface. These dikes appear to have originated from Elysium Planitia ∼600 km to the SE. In one instance, a dike (at an elevation of −3750 m) appears to have produced a subglacial mound (referred to here as “Galaxias Mons 2”) that evolved into an extrusive eruption and produced copious volumes of melt water that carved an outflow channel that extends almost 300 km to the north. At a lower elevation (−3980 m), a second putative dike may have failed to break the surface of the ice sheet and formed Galaxias Mons as a laccolithic intrusion. We numerically model the formation of Galaxias Mons and find that at least 200 m of ice may once have existed at this latitude at the time of the dike intrusions. Such a conclusion supports the idea that enigmatic small domes in the area may be pingoes. Collectively, these observations suggest that the previous interpretations for the origin of near-by Hrad Vallis as a sub-aerial eruption may need to be revised.

Assessment of mare basalt gas release patterns during individual eruptions provides the basis for predicting the effect of vesiculation processes on the structure and morphology of associated features. We subdivide typical lunar eruptions into four phases: Phase 1, dike penetrates to the surface, transient gas release phase; Phase 2, dike base still rising, high flux hawaiian eruptive phase; Phase 3, dike equilibration, lower flux hawaiian to strombolian transition phase; Phase 4, dike closing, strombolian vesicular flow phase. We show how these four phases of mare basalt volatile release, together with total dike volumes, initial magma volatile content, vent configuration and magma discharge rate, can help relate the wide range of apparently disparate lunar volcanic features (pyroclastic mantles, small shield volcanoes, compound flow fields, sinuous rilles, long lava flows, pyroclastic cones, summit pit craters, irregular mare patches (IMPs) and ring moat dome structures (RMDSs)) to a common set of eruption processes.

Analysis of Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS) observations of Marduk Fluctus, a volcano on the jovian moon Io, reveals a style of volcanic activity not previously seen there – a powerful thermal event lasting only a few minutes in 1997. The thermal emission rapidly fades, suggesting extremely rapid cooling of small clasts. The duration and evolution of the explosive eruption is akin to what might be expected from a strombolian or vulcanian explosion. The presence of such events provides an additional volcanic process that can be imaged by future missions with the intent of determining lava composition from eruption temperature, an important constraint on the internal composition of Io. These data promise to be of particular use in understanding the mechanics of explosive volcanic processes on Io.

Lunar irregular mare patches (IMPs) comprise dozens of small, distinctive, and enigmatic lunar mare features. Characterized by their irregular shapes, well-preserved state of relief, apparent optical immaturity, and few superposed impact craters, IMPs are interpreted to have been formed or modified geologically very recently (

The MESSENGER mission revealed, for the first time, conclusive evidence of explosive volcanism on Mercury. Several previous works have cataloged the appearance and location of explosive volcanism on the planet using a variety of identifying characteristics, including vent presence and deposit color as seen in multispectral image mosaics. We present here a comprehensive catalog of vents of likely volcanic origin; our classification scheme emphasizes vent morphology. We have analyzed the morphologies of all vents in our catalog, and recognize three main morphologies: “simple vent”, “pit vent”, and “vent-with-mound”. The majority of vents we identify are located within impact craters. The spatial distribution of vents does not correlate with the locations of volcanic smooth plains deposits, in contrast to the Moon, nor do vents correlate with the locations of large impact basins (except for the Caloris and Tolstoj basins). Using the degradation state of the vent host crater as a proxy for maximum age, we suggest that vent formation has been active through the Mansurian and into the Kuiperian periods, although the majority of vents were likely formed much earlier in mercurian history. The morphologies and locations of vents are used to investigate a set of plausible formation geometries. We find that the most likely and most prevalent formation geometry is that of a dike, stalled at depth, which then explosively vents to the surface. We compare the vent and deposit size of mercurian pyroclastic deposits with localized and regional lunar pyroclastic deposits, and find a range of possible eruption energies and corresponding variations in eruption style. Localized lunar pyroclastic deposits and the majority of mercurian pyroclastic deposits show evidence for eruption that is consistent with the magmatic foam at the top of a dike reaching a critical gas volume fraction. A subset of mercurian vents, including the prominent Copland-Rachmaninoff vent to the northeast of the Rachmaninoff basin, indicates eruption at enhanced gas volume fractions. This subset of vents shows a similar eruptive behavior to the lunar Orientale dark mantle ring deposit, suggesting that the dikes that formed these vents and deposits on Mercury underwent some form of additional volatile build-up either through crustal volatile incorporation or magma convection within the dike. There also exists a population of mercurian vents that no longer retain a visible associated pyroclastic deposit; we hypothesize that the visible signature of the pyroclastic deposit has been lost through space weathering and regolith mixing processes. Together, these results provide a comprehensive analysis of explosive volcanism on Mercury, and inform continued research on the thermal history of Mercury and magma composition and evolution.
