The parameterization scheme that represents gravity waves due to convection in LMDz-6A, the atmospheric components of the IPSL coupled climate model (IPSLCM6), is directly compared to Strateole-2 balloon observations made in the lower tropical stratosphere from November 2019 to February 2020. The input meteorological fields necessary to run the parameterization offline are extracted from the ERA5 reanalysis and correspond to the instantaneous meteorological conditions found underneath the balloons. In general, we find a fair agreement between measurements of the momentum fluxes due to waves with periods less than 1hr and the parameterization. The correlation of the daily values between the observations and the results of the parameterization is around 0.4, which is statistically elevated considering that we analyse around 600 days of data and surprisingly good considering that the parameterization has not been tuned: the scheme is just the standard one that helps producing a Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in the IPSLCM6 model. Online simulations also show that the measured values of momentum fluxes are well representative of the zonally and averaged values of momentum fluxes needed in LMDz-6A to simulate a QBO. The observations also show that longer waves with periods smaller than a day carry about twice as much flux as waves with periods smaller than an hour, which is a challenge since the low period waves that make the difference are potentially in the “grey zone” of most climate models

Temperature and Salinity at the ocean interface can be substantially different than their bulk values in the ocean mixed layer at 5-10 meters depth. The main phenomena that account for these differences are (i) the interfacial millimeter scale diffusive microlayer usually cooler and saltier than below due to surface fluxes and (ii) diurnal warm layers of few tens of centimeters to few meters that form under weak wind condition due to solar absorption. Although characterized by small vertical scales, these tightly wind-related phenomena corresponds to coherent structures up to the large-scale where they can impact air-sea exchanges of heat, water and chemical species. Another phenomenon that can impact global air-sea exchanges is the freshwater lenses produced by rain. Rain freshens and cools the ocean surface, as raindrops temperature is usually lower than surface temperature. The induced negative salinity anomaly enables surface cold anomalies to be sustained and further cooled down by surface fluxes after rain has ceased. This study presents a first global estimate of basic statistics rain-induced ocean surface freshening and temperature changes and of their variations with seasons.

In coupled general circulation model, the accuracy of momentum and energy exchange at the air-sea interface is still a potential source of significant bias. In the framework of the COCOA project we investigate new methods (both mathematical and numerical) to have a more correct flux representation. One important source of error is the asynchronous coupling between oceanic and atmospheric model. Indeed, the time step of the coupling is generally longer than time steps used by either the atmospheric or the oceanic model. This introduces inconsistencies between the free evolution of the two models due to the exchange parameters that are held constant since the last coupling time step. In particular, non-synchronous exchange coefficients may lead to error in the diurnal evolution of the coupled system, or to bias in the ocean mixed layer temperature for period where surface fluxes increases or decrease linearly. In order to evaluate the potential amplitude of this error, and its regional and sea- sonal distribution, we use the hourly fluxes that are available in the new ECMWF ERA5 re-analyses. The error due to asynchronous coupling is first evaluated by inspecting the flux difference between two successive time-steps. Results show more important differences over the western boundary currents and the circumpolar current for all the fluxes except for the solar flux. We also observe larger differences in summer compared to winter in the respective hemisphere. By taking in account the geometrical variation of the solar flux we show how we can reduce the error for the solar flux. In a second time we are calculating the statistics for the linear increase and decrease of the flux for a fixed period (ig one day, two days...) over all the ocean for all the fluxes except the solar one. The results are showing coefficients that are decreasing as the period increase. We also use those coefficient in a simple mixed layer model to calculate the error made over the period of calcul. On the contrary we see the appearance of a plateau at two-three days on the impact of this linear bias. Finally, using the De Boyer de Montaigu climatology for the mixed layer height we show that the linear bias could lead to temperature change up to 0.1K.

International audience; Stratospheric balloons from the Vorcore campaign have provided a unique description of the gravity-wave field in the lower stratosphere above Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, during the austral spring of 2005. Mesoscale simulations are carried out to analyze further the gravity-wave field. First, the realism of the simulated waves is assessed by comparison to the observations. A satisfactory overall agreement is found, but different behaviour is noted for orographic waves (overestimation in the simulations relative to the observations) and non-orographic waves (underestimation). Second, the gravity-wave field is analyzed in more detail than was possible from observations alone. It is necessary to distinguish and quantify orographic and non-orographic waves separately. Orographic waves are larger and more intermittent, yet affect only a limited geographical region. Hence, although orographic sources stand out as 'hot spots' for gravity waves, their contribution to momentum fluxes entering the stratosphere is comparable to or smaller than the contribution of non-orographic sources. A diagnostic for intermittency, the Gini coefficient, is proposed. It clearly marks the distinction between orographic and non-orographic sources (intermittencies of ~ 0.8 and ~ 0.5 respectively). Sensitivity to resolution is quite small regarding the spatial structure of the gravity-wave field, but is significant for the amplitudes. The momentum flux values increase by ~ 2 when the horizontal resolution is doubled, and possible biases of both simulations and observations are discussed. Nonetheless, the good agreement between observations and simulations and the complementary information on the biases of each dataset promises that in the future these different estimates of gravity-wave momentum fluxes may converge. © 2012 Royal Meteorological Society.

The observations from the Vorcore campaign (September 2005– January 2006) provide a unique dataset for the study of gravity waves in the lower stratosphere because of their wide coverage (150 000 observations from the South Pole to about 40°S) and of the quasi-Lagrangian nature of the superpressure balloons used. Numerical simulations with a mesoscale model are undertaken in order to investigate further the observed gravity waves, their sources and the induced momentum fluxes. The need for a high spatial resolution makes it necessary to find a compromise between the size of the model domain and the length of the simulations. We describe preliminary simulations used to determine the best configuration of the model for this purpose, and show that the simulations compare reasonably well with the observations. Model results complement the observations and provide new insights into orographic and non-orographic wave sources. Copyright © 2010 Royal Meteorological Society

International audience; A formalism is proposed to parameterize the gravity waves due to convection in general circulation models with a stratosphere. It is based on a stochastic approach, where a large ensemble of monochromatic gravity waves is built up by launching a few waves at each time step, and by adding the effect of these waves, to that of the waves launched before, during the same day. The frequency and horizontal wave numbers of each wave are chosen randomly with fixed probability distribution, but the wave amplitude is directly related to precipitation, which is converted into heating rate. Linear theory is then used to predict the gravity wave generated by the heating rate. Off-line tests are carried out using reanalysis and global precipitation data. These tests demonstrate that the scheme launches gravity wave momentum fluxes that are much more erratic in amplitude than when uniform sources are considered. Consequently, the scheme tends to produce momentum flux deposition at lower levels than for the case when uniform sources are considered. We verify that the parameterization, when included in a general circulation model with vertical resolution in the stratosphere dz ~500m, is able to produce a quasi-biennial oscillation, without being detrimental to other aspects of the model climatology, like the semiannual oscillation and the behavior of the extratropics. © 2013. [1] A formalism is proposed to represent a broadband spectrum of Gravity Waves (GWs) via the superposition of a large ensemble of statistically independent monochromatic ones. To produce this large ensemble at a reasonable numerical cost, we use the fact that the life cycles of the waves needed to be parameterized in General Circulation Models (GCMs) have time scales that largely exceed the time step of the model. We can therefore launch few waves with characteristics chosen randomly at each time step, and make them having an effect on a longer time scale by applying an AR1 relation between the gravity waves drag at a given time and that at the next time step. The stochastic GW parameterization is applied to a GCM in the tropics, and its additional drag causes a realistic Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO). The more realistic wind structure also results in a better representation of the large scale equatorial waves, like the Rossby Gravity Waves (RGWs) with periods around 4–5 day.
